Piensa antes de actuar
6 Querido jovencito,
si algún amigo te pide
que respondas por él
y te comprometas
a pagar sus deudas,
2 no aceptes ese compromiso,
pues caerás en la trampa.
3 No dejes que tu amigo te atrape;
¡mejor ponte a salvo!
Te recomiendo que vayas a verlo
y le ruegues que no te comprometa.
4 Que no te agarren de tonto;
5 mejor ponte a salvo,
como huyen del cazador,
las aves y los venados.
No seas perezoso
6 ¡Vamos, joven perezoso,
fíjate en la hormiga!
¡Fíjate en cómo trabaja,
y aprende a ser sabio como ella!
7 La hormiga no tiene jefes,
ni capataces ni gobernantes,
8 pero durante la cosecha
recoge su comida y la guarda.
9 Jovencito perezoso,
¿cuánto más seguirás durmiendo?,
¿cuándo vas a despertar?
10 Te duermes un poco,
te tomas la siesta,
tomas un descansito
y te cruzas de brazos...
11 ¡Así acabarás
en la más terrible pobreza!
No seas mentiroso
12 Hay gente mala y sinvergüenza
que anda contando mentiras;
13 para engañar a los otros,
guiña el ojo,
apunta con los dedos,
y hace señas con los pies.
14 Esa gente sólo piensa hacer lo malo,
y siempre anda provocando pleitos.
15 Por eso la desgracia
vendrá sobre ellos de repente;
cuando menos lo esperen,
serán destruidos sin remedio.
No provoques peleas
16 Hay seis clases de gente,
y puede añadirse una más
que Dios no puede soportar:
17 La gente orgullosa,
la gente violenta,
la gente mentirosa,
18 la gente malvada,
la gente ansiosa de hacer lo malo,
19 la gente que miente en un juicio,
y la que provoca pleitos familiares.
Cuidado con la mujer infiel
20 Querido jovencito,
cumple al pie de la letra
con los mandamientos de tu padre
y con las enseñanzas de tu madre.
21 Grábatelos en la memoria,
y tenlos siempre presentes;
22 te mostrarán el camino a seguir,
velarán tu sueño mientras duermes,
y hablarán contigo cuando despiertes.
23 Los mandamientos y las enseñanzas
son como una lámpara encendida;
la corrección y la disciplina
te mostrarán cómo debes vivir;
24 te cuidarán de la mujer infiel,
que con palabras dulces te convence.
25 No pienses en esa malvada;
no te dejes engañar por su hermosura
ni te dejes cautivar por su mirada.
26 Por una prostituta
puedes perder la comida,
pero por la mujer de otro
puedes perder la vida.
27 Si te echas brasas en el pecho,
te quemarás la ropa;
28 si caminas sobre brasas,
te quemarás los pies;
29 si te enredas con la esposa de otro,
no quedarás sin castigo.
30 No se ve mal que un ladrón
robe para calmar su hambre,
31 aunque si lo sorprenden robando
debe devolver siete veces
el valor de lo robado;
a veces tiene que pagar
con todas sus posesiones.
32-33 Pero el que se enreda
con la mujer de otro
comete la peor estupidez:
busca golpes,
encuentra vergüenzas,
¡y acaba perdiendo la vida!
34 Además, el marido engañado
da rienda suelta a su furia;
si de vengarse se trata,
no perdona a nadie.
35 Un marido ofendido
no acepta nada a cambio;
no se da por satisfecho
ni con todo el oro del mundo.

Common English Bible
Wise advice
6 My son, if you guarantee a loan for your neighbor
or shake hands in agreement with a stranger,
2 you will be trapped by your words;
you will be caught by your words.
3 Do this, my son, to get out of it,
for you have come under the control of your neighbor.
So go, humble yourself,[a] and pester your neighbor.
4 Don’t give sleep to your eyes
or slumber to your eyelids.
5 Get yourself free like a gazelle from a hunter,
like a bird from the hand of a fowler.
6 Go to the ant, you lazy person;
observe its ways and grow wise.
7 The ant has no commander, officer, or ruler.
8 Even so, it gets its food in summer;
gathers its provisions at harvest.
9 How long, lazy person, will you lie down?
When will you rise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the arms to lie down—
11 and poverty will come on you like a prowler,
destitution like a warrior.
12 Worthless people and guilty people
go around with crooked talk.
13 They wink their eyes, gesture with their feet,
and point with their fingers.
14 Their hearts are corrupt and determined to do evil;
they create controversies all the time.
15 Therefore, sudden disaster will come upon them;
they will be quickly broken beyond healing.
16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven things detestable to him:
17 snobbish eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that spill innocent blood,
18 a heart set on wicked plans,
feet that run quickly to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes lies,
and one who causes conflicts among relatives.
Danger of adultery
20 My son, keep your father’s command;
don’t abandon your mother’s instruction.
21 Bind them on your heart for all time;
fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk around, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will protect you;
when you awake, they will occupy your attention.
23 The commandment is a lamp and instruction a light;
corrective teaching is the path of life.
24 They guard you from the evil woman,
from the flattering tongue of the foreign woman.
25 Don’t desire her beauty in secret;
don’t let her take you in with her eyelashes,
26 for a prostitute costs a loaf of bread,[b]
but a married woman hunts for a man’s very life.
27 Can a man scoop fire into his lap
and his clothes not get burned?
28 If a man walks on hot coals,
don’t his feet get burned?
29 So is the man who approaches his neighbor’s wife;
anyone who touches her will be punished.
30 People don’t despise a thief if he steals
to fill his starving stomach.
31 But if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold;
he must give all the riches of his house.
32 He who commits adultery is senseless.
Doing so, he destroys himself.
33 He is wounded and disgraced.
His shame will never be wiped away.
34 Jealousy makes a man rage;
he’ll show no mercy on his day of revenge.
35 He won’t accept compensation;
he’ll refuse even a large bribe.
