31 Palabras del rey Lemuel, oráculo[a] que le enseñó su madre.
2 ¿Qué, hijo mío?
¿Qué, hijo de mis entrañas[b](A)?
¿Qué, hijo de mis votos(B)?
3 No des tu vigor a las mujeres(C),
ni tus caminos a lo que destruye a los reyes(D).
4 No es para los reyes, oh Lemuel,
no es para los reyes(E) beber vino(F),
ni para los gobernantes desear bebida fuerte;
5 no sea que beban y olviden lo que se ha decretado,
y perviertan los derechos[c] de todos los afligidos[d](G).
6 Dad bebida fuerte al que está pereciendo(H),
y vino a los amargados de alma(I).
7 Que beba y se olvide de su pobreza,
y no recuerde más su aflicción.
8 (J)Abre tu boca por los mudos,
por los derechos[e] de todos los desdichados[f].
9 Abre tu boca, juzga con justicia(K),
y defiende los derechos del[g] afligido y del necesitado(L).
Elogio de la mujer hacendosa
10 Mujer hacendosa[h](M), ¿quién la hallará?
Su valor supera en mucho al de las joyas(N).
11 En ella confía el corazón de su marido,
y no carecerá de ganancias.
12 Ella le trae bien y no mal
todos los días de su vida.
13 Busca lana y lino,
y con agrado[i] trabaja con sus manos[j].
14 Es como las naves de mercader(O),
trae su alimento de lejos.
15 También se levanta cuando aún es de noche(P),
y da alimento a los de su casa(Q),
y tarea[k] a sus doncellas.
16 Evalúa un campo y lo compra;
con sus ganancias[l] planta una viña.
17 Ella se ciñe[m](R) de fuerza,
y fortalece sus brazos.
18 Nota que su ganancia es buena,
no se apaga de noche su lámpara.
19 Extiende sus manos a la rueca,
y sus manos[n] toman el huso.
20 Extiende su mano[o] al pobre,
y alarga sus manos al necesitado(S).
21 No tiene temor de la nieve por los de su casa,
porque todos los de su casa llevan ropa escarlata[p](T).
22 Se hace mantos(U) para sí;
su ropa es de lino fino(V) y de púrpura(W).
23 Su marido es conocido en las puertas(X),
cuando se sienta con los ancianos de la tierra.
24 Hace telas de lino(Y) y las vende,
y provee[q] cinturones a los mercaderes[r].
25 Fuerza y dignidad son su vestidura(Z),
y sonríe al futuro[s].
26 Abre su boca con sabiduría(AA),
y hay enseñanza[t] de bondad en su lengua.
27 Ella vigila la marcha de su casa,
y no come el pan de la ociosidad(AB).
28 Sus hijos se levantan y la llaman bienaventurada,
también su marido, y la alaba diciendo:
29 Muchas mujeres[u] han obrado con nobleza,
pero tú las superas a todas.
30 Engañosa es la gracia y vana la belleza,
pero la mujer que teme[v] al Señor(AC), esa será alabada.
31 Dadle el fruto de sus manos,
y que sus obras la alaben en las puertas.

Dichos de Lemuel
31 Dichos del rey Lemuel de Masá, con los cuales su madre le dio instrucción:
2 Hijo mío, fruto de mis entrañas,
respuesta de Dios a mis ruegos,
¿qué más te puedo decir?
3 Que no gastes tu energía con mujeres,
pues por ellas los reyes se pierden.
4 Y no está bien, Lemuel, que reyes y gobernantes
beban vino y bebidas fuertes,
5 pues podrían olvidarse de la ley
y violar los derechos de los más humildes.
6 Deja el vino y las bebidas fuertes
para los decaídos y deprimidos;
7 ¡que beban y no vuelvan a acordarse
de su pobreza y sufrimientos!
8 Levanta la voz por los que no tienen voz;
¡defiende a los indefensos!
9 Levanta la voz, y hazles justicia;
¡defiende a los pobres y a los humildes!
10 Mujer ejemplar no es fácil hallarla;
¡vale más que las piedras preciosas!
11 Su esposo confía plenamente en ella,
y nunca le faltan ganancias.
12 Brinda a su esposo grandes satisfacciones
todos los días de su vida.
13 Va en busca de lana y lino,
y con placer realiza labores manuales.
14 Cual si fuera un barco mercante,
trae de muy lejos sus provisiones.
15 Antes de amanecer se levanta
y da de comer a sus hijos y a sus criadas.
16 Inspecciona un terreno y lo compra,
y con sus ganancias planta viñedos.
17 Se reviste de fortaleza
y con ánimo se dispone a trabajar.
18 Cuida de que el negocio marche bien,
y de noche trabaja hasta tarde.
19 Con sus propias manos
hace hilados y tejidos.
20 Siempre les tiende la mano
a los pobres y necesitados.
21 No teme por su familia cuando nieva,
pues todos los suyos andan bien abrigados.
22 Ella misma hace sus colchas,
y se viste con las telas más finas.
23 Su esposo es bien conocido en la ciudad,
y se cuenta entre los más respetados del país.
24 Ella hace túnicas y cinturones,
y los vende a los comerciantes.
25 Se reviste de fuerza y dignidad,
y el día de mañana no le preocupa.
26 Habla siempre con sabiduría,
y da con amor sus enseñanzas.
27 Está atenta a la marcha de su casa,
y jamás come lo que no ha ganado.
28 Sus hijos y su esposo
la alaban y le dicen:
29 «Mujeres buenas hay muchas,
pero tú eres la mejor de todas.»
30 Los encantos son una mentira,
la belleza no es más que ilusión,
pero la mujer que honra al Señor
es digna de alabanza.
31 ¡Alábenla ante todo el pueblo!
¡Denle crédito por todo lo que ha hecho!

31 These are the wise sayings of King Lemuel of Massa,[a] taught to him at his mother’s knee:
2 O my son, whom I have dedicated to the Lord, 3 do not spend your time with women—the royal pathway to destruction.
4 And it is not for kings, O Lemuel, to drink wine and whiskey. 5 For if they drink, they may forget their duties and be unable to give justice to those who are oppressed. 6-7 Hard liquor is for sick men at the brink of death, and wine for those in deep depression. Let them drink to forget their poverty and misery.
8 You should defend those who cannot help themselves. 9 Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.
10 If you can find a truly good wife, she is worth more than precious gems! 11 Her husband can trust her, and she will richly satisfy his needs. 12 She will not hinder him but help him all her life. 13 She finds wool and flax and busily spins it. 14 She buys imported foods brought by ship from distant ports. 15 She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plans the day’s work for her servant girls. 16 She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; with her own hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She is energetic, a hard worker, 18 and watches for bargains. She works far into the night!
19-20 She sews for the poor and generously helps those in need. 21 She has no fear of winter for her household, for she has made warm clothes for all of them. 22 She also upholsters with finest tapestry; her own clothing is beautifully made—a purple gown of pure linen. 23 Her husband is well known, for he sits in the council chamber with the other civic leaders. 24 She makes belted linen garments to sell to the merchants.
25 She is a woman of strength and dignity and has no fear of old age. 26 When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is the rule for everything she says. 27 She watches carefully all that goes on throughout her household and is never lazy. 28 Her children stand and bless her; so does her husband. He praises her with these words: 29 “There are many fine women in the world, but you are the best of them all!”
30 Charm can be deceptive and beauty doesn’t last, but a woman who fears and reverences God shall be greatly praised. 31 Praise her for the many fine things she does. These good deeds of hers shall bring her honor and recognition from people of importance.[b]

Sayings of King Lemuel
31 The sayings(A) of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!(B)
3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.(C)
4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,(D)
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink(E) and forget what has been decreed,(F)
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine(G) for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink(H) and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8 Speak(I) up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.(J)
Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character
10 [b]A wife of noble character(K) who can find?(L)
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband(M) has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.(N)
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.(O)
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.(P)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders(Q) of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.(R)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise(S) at the city gate.
