pero Dios juzga las intenciones.
3 Deja en manos de Dios
todo lo que haces,
y tus proyectos se harán realidad.
4 Todo lo que Dios hace
tiene un propósito;
¡hasta creó al malvado
para el día del castigo!
5 Dios no soporta a los orgullosos,
y una cosa es segura:
no los dejará sin castigo.
6 El pecado se perdona
cuando se ama de verdad;
uno se aleja del mal
cuando obedece a Dios.
7 Cuando Dios está contento
con nuestro comportamiento,
hasta con nuestros enemigos
nos hace vivir en paz.
8 Más vale ser pobre pero honrado,
que ser rico pero tramposo.
9 El hombre planea su futuro,
pero Dios le marca el rumbo.
10 No hay rey que cometa errores,
si deja que Dios lo aconseje.
11 Dios quiere que seas honrado
en todos tus negocios.
12 Ningún rey soporta a los malvados;
todo buen reinado depende
de que se practique la justicia.
13 Los reyes aprecian a la gente
que les habla con la verdad.
14 El enojo del rey
es amenaza de muerte;
el que es sabio procura calmarlo.
15 La sonrisa del rey
es promesa de vida;
contar con su apoyo
es recibir un premio inesperado.
16 La sabiduría y el entendimiento
valen más que el oro y la plata.
17 La gente honrada se aparta del mal,
y así protege su vida.
18 El orgulloso y arrogante
al fin de cuentas fracasa.
19 Vale más compartir
la pobreza de los humildes
que las riquezas de los orgullosos.
20 El buen administrador prospera;
¡Dios bendice a quienes en él confían!
21 Al que piensa bien las cosas
se le llama inteligente;
quien habla con dulzura
convence mejor.
22 El que piensa antes de actuar
vivirá por muchos años,
pero es una tontería
corregir a los tontos.
23 Quien piensa bien las cosas
se fija en lo que dice;
quien se fija en lo que dice
convence mejor.
24 Las palabras amables
son como la miel:
endulzan la vida
y sanan el cuerpo.
25 Hay quienes piensan
que está bien todo lo que hacen,
pero al fin de cuentas
acaban en la tumba.
26 Mientras más hambre se tiene,
más duro se trabaja.
27 El malvado es un horno lleno de maldad;
sus palabras queman como el fuego.
28 El que es malvado y chismoso
provoca peleas y causa divisiones.
29 El violento engaña a su amigo,
y lo lleva por camino de maldad.
30 Quien te hace señas con los ojos
y te sonríe sin razón,
algo malo trama contra ti,
o algo malo ha cometido.
31 Llegar a viejo es una honra;
las canas son la corona
que se gana por ser honrado.
32 Vale más ser paciente que valiente;
vale más dominarse uno mismo
que dominar a los demás.

La sabiduría no tiene precio
17 Vale más pan duro entre amigos
que mucha carne entre enemigos.
2 El sirviente que se esfuerza
se convierte en jefe del mal hijo,
y se queda con la herencia
que a éste le tocaba.
3 El oro y la plata
se prueban en el fuego;
nuestras intenciones
las pone a prueba Dios.
4 El mentiroso le cree al mentiroso
y el malvado le cree al malvado.
5 Es una ofensa contra Dios
burlarse del pobre en desgracia;
quien lo haga no quedará sin castigo.
6 El orgullo de los padres
son los hijos;
la alegría de los abuelos
son los nietos.
7 Tan ridículo resulta que un tonto
pretenda hablar con elegancia,
como que un gobernante piense
que en su país todos son tontos.
8 El que da dinero a otros
para que le hagan favores
cree tener una varita mágica,
para conseguir siempre lo que quiere.
9 Quien perdona gana un amigo;
quien no perdona gana un enemigo.
10 El que es inteligente
con un regaño aprende,
pero el que es necio
ni con cien golpes entiende.
11 El que es revoltoso
siempre anda buscando pelea,
pero un día se enfrentará
con un adversario más cruel.
12 El necio que cree tener la razón
es más peligroso que una osa
que defiende a sus cachorros.
13 Al que es malagradecido
siempre le irá mal.
14 Si comienzas una pelea,
ya no podrás controlarla;
es como un río desbordado,
que arrastra todo a su paso.
15 Dios no soporta dos cosas:
que el culpable sea declarado inocente,
y que el inocente sea declarado culpable.
16 De qué le sirve al tonto el dinero,
si no tiene entendimiento;
¡la sabiduría no se compra!
17 El amigo siempre es amigo,
y en los tiempos difíciles
es más que un hermano.
18 Hay que ser muy tonto
para salir fiador de otros;
¿por qué pagar deudas ajenas?
19 Dime quién pelea
y te diré quién peca;
dime quién se cree mucho
y te diré quién fracasa.
20 Al que es mal intencionado
nunca le irá bien;
al que es mentiroso
siempre le irá mal.
21 ¡Qué triste es tener
un hijo falto de entendimiento!
No es motivo de alegría
ser el padre de un tonto.
22 No hay mejor medicina
que tener pensamientos alegres.
Cuando se pierde el ánimo,
todo el cuerpo se enferma.
23 El malvado se vende por dinero;
¡por eso hay tanta injusticia!
24 El sabio quiere más sabiduría;
el tonto no sabe lo que quiere.
25 ¡Cuánto enojo y cuánta amargura
causa a sus padres el hijo necio!
26 No es justo castigar al inocente,
ni azotar al hombre honrado.
27 Hablar poco es de sabios;
la gente inteligente mantiene la calma.
28 Hasta el tonto pasa por sabio
si se calla y mantiene la calma.
Premio o castigo,//tú lo decides
18 El que es egoísta
sólo piensa en sí mismo
y no acepta ningún consejo.
2 Al tonto no le interesa aprender,
sino mostrar lo poco que sabe.
3 La maldad nunca llega sola;
viene siempre acompañada
de vergüenza y desprecio.
4 Las palabras del sabio
son fuente de sabiduría.
5 ¡Qué malo es
declarar inocente al malvado
y no hacerle justicia al inocente!
6 Cuando el tonto abre la boca,
causa discusiones y pleitos.
7 Cuando el necio abre la boca,
pone su vida en peligro.
8 ¡Qué sabrosos son los chismes,
pero cuánto daño causan!
9 El vago y el destructor,
¡hasta parecen hermanos!
10 Dios es como una alta torre;
hacia él corren los buenos
para ponerse a salvo.
11 El rico cree estar protegido,
piensa que sus riquezas
son como una ciudad con murallas
donde nadie puede hacerle daño.
12 El orgullo acaba en fracaso;
la honra comienza con la humildad.
13 Es muy tonto y vergonzoso
responder antes de escuchar.
14 Con ánimo se alivia al enfermo,
pero no a quien está deprimido.
15 El que es sabio e inteligente
presta atención y aprende más.
16 Con un regalo generoso
todo el mundo te recibe;
¡hasta la gente más importante
te abre sus puertas!
17 El primero en defenderse
alega ser inocente,
pero llegan los testigos
y afirman lo contrario.
18 Los pleitos más difíciles
hay que ponerlos en manos de Dios.
19 Es más fácil derribar un muro
que calmar al amigo ofendido.
20 Cada uno recibe por sus palabras
su premio o su castigo.
21 La lengua tiene poder
para dar vida y para quitarla;
los que no paran de hablar
sufren las consecuencias.
22 Si ya tienes esposa,
ya tienes lo mejor:
¡Dios te ha demostrado su amor!
23 El pobre suplica;
el rico insulta.
24 Con ciertos amigos,
no hacen falta enemigos,
pero hay otros amigos
que valen más que un hermano.
El sabio oye consejos
19 Más vale ser pobre y honrado,
que ser necio y tramposo.
2 No es bueno actuar sin pensar;
la prisa es madre del error.
3 El tonto fracasa en todo,
y luego dice:
«¡Dios tiene la culpa!»
4 El rico tiene muchos amigos;
el pobre no tiene ninguno.
5 No hay testigo falso
que salga bien librado;
todo mentiroso recibe su castigo.
6 A los ricos les sobran amigos;
todo el mundo busca su amistad
por los regalos que dan.
7 Al pobre ni sus hermanos lo quieren;
¡mucho menos lo buscan sus amigos!
Cuando más los necesita,
no están para ayudarlo.
8 Si en verdad te aprecias, estudia.
Bien harás en practicar lo aprendido.
9 No hay testigo falso
que salga bien librado;
todos los mentirosos serán destruidos.
10 No hay nada más absurdo
que un tonto viviendo entre lujos,
y un esclavo gobernando a reyes.
11 Es de sabios tener paciencia,
y es más honroso perdonar la ofensa.
12 Cuando el rey se enoja,
grita como león furioso.
Cuando el rey está contento,
reanima como fresca lluvia.
13 El hijo tonto arruina a su padre,
y la mujer peleona
poco a poco arruina al marido.
14 La casa y el dinero
son regalo de los padres;
la esposa inteligente
es un regalo de Dios.
15 Tanto duerme el perezoso
que acaba pasando hambre.
16 El que respeta una orden
se respeta a sí mismo;
el que deja de cumplirla
dicta su sentencia de muerte.
17 Prestarle al pobre
es como prestarle a Dios.
¡Y Dios siempre paga sus deudas!
18 Corrige a tu hijo
antes de que sea muy tarde;
no te hagas culpable de su muerte.
19 Quien fácilmente se enoja
sufrirá las consecuencias;
no tiene caso calmarlo,
pues se enciende más su enojo.
20 El que oye consejo
y acepta que lo corrijan
acabará siendo sabio.
21 El hombre propone,
y Dios dispone.
22 Todo el mundo quiere tener
a alguien en quien confiar;
todo el mundo prefiere al pobre
más que al mentiroso.
23 Obedece a Dios y vivirás;
así dormirás tranquilo
y no tendrás ningún temor.
24 Hay gente tan perezosa
que hasta de comer se cansa.
25 El tonto sólo aprende
a través del castigo;
al que es sabio le basta
con sólo ser reprendido.
26 No hay hijo más malo
ni más sinvergüenza
que el que roba a su padre
y echa a la calle a su madre.
27 Querido jovencito,
si no aceptas la corrección,
te apartarás de los sabios consejos.
28 Un testigo malvado
se burla de la justicia;
su alimento es la maldad.
29 Para el malcriado, el castigo;
para el tonto, los azotes.
Dios dirige nuestra vida
20 Es de tontos emborracharse,
porque se pierde el control
y se provoca mucho alboroto.
2 Cuando el rey se enoja
es como un león que ruge;
quien lo hace enojar,
pone en peligro su vida.
3 Cualquier tonto inicia un pleito,
pero quien lo evita merece aplausos.
4 Quien no trabaja en otoño
se muere de hambre en invierno.
5 Los planes de la mente humana
son profundos como el mar;
quien es inteligente los descubre.
6 Hay muchos que afirman ser leales,
pero nadie encuentra gente confiable.
7 Dios bendice
a los hijos del hombre honrado,
cuando ellos siguen su ejemplo.
8 En cuanto el rey se sienta
para juzgar al acusado,
con una mirada suya
acaba con el malvado.
9 Nadie puede decir
que tiene buenos pensamientos
ni que está limpio de pecado.
10 Dios no soporta dos cosas:
que engañes al que te vende,
y que engañes al que te compra.
11 Por los hechos se llega a saber
si el joven tiene buena conducta.
12 Dios ha creado dos cosas:
los oídos para oír
y los ojos para ver.
13 Si sólo piensas en dormir
terminarás en la pobreza.
Mejor piensa en trabajar,
y nunca te faltará comida.
14 Para el que compra,
ninguna mercancía es buena;
para el que vende,
ninguna mercancía es mejor.
15 Podrá haber mucho oro,
y muchas piedras preciosas,
pero nada hay más valioso
que las enseñanzas del sabio.
16 Si te comprometes a pagar
las deudas de un desconocido,
te pedirán dar algo en garantía
y perderás hasta el abrigo.
17 Tal vez te sepa muy sabroso
ganarte el pan con engaños,
pero acabarás comiendo basura.
18 Siempre que hagas planes,
sigue los buenos consejos;
nunca vayas a la guerra
sin un buen plan de batalla.
19 El que habla mucho
no sabe guardar secretos.
No te juntes con gente chismosa.
20 El que maldice a sus padres
morirá antes de tiempo.
21 Lo que al principio
se gana fácilmente,
al final no trae ninguna alegría.
22 Nunca hables de tomar venganza;
mejor confía en Dios,
y él vendrá en tu ayuda.
23 Dios no soporta dos cosas:
que engañes al que te vende,
y que engañes al que te compra.
24 Nadie sabe cuál será su futuro;
por eso debemos dejar
que Dios dirija nuestra vida.
25 No caigas en la trampa
de prometerle algo a Dios,
para luego no cumplirle.
26 Cuando el rey sabio
castiga al malvado,
lo destruye por completo.
27 Dios nos ha dado la conciencia
para que podamos examinarnos
a nosotros mismos.
28 El rey afirma su reinado
cuando es fiel a Dios
y trata bien a su pueblo.
29 El orgullo del joven es su fuerza;
el del anciano, su experiencia.
30 Con golpes y con azotes
se corrigen los malos pensamientos.
Ante Dios, humildad
21 En las manos de Dios
los planes del rey
son como un río:
toman el curso
que Dios quiere darles.
2 Todo el mundo cree hacer lo mejor,
pero Dios juzga las intenciones.
3 Más que recibir ofrendas y sacrificios,
Dios prefiere que se haga justicia
y que se practique la honradez.
4 Hay tres cosas que son pecado:
ser orgulloso,
creerse muy inteligente,
y vivir como un malvado.
5 Cuando las cosas se piensan bien,
el resultado es provechoso.
Cuando se hacen a la carrera,
el resultado es desastroso.
6 Las riquezas que amontona el mentiroso
se desvanecen como el humo;
son una trampa mortal.
7 La violencia destruye a los malvados
porque se niegan a hacer justicia.
8 Quien mal se comporta,
lleva una vida difícil;
quien vive honradamente
lleva una vida sin problemas.
9 Más vale vivir
en un rincón del patio,
que dentro de un palacio
con una persona peleona.
10 El malvado sólo piensa en el mal,
y hasta con sus amigos es malvado.
11 Jóvenes sin experiencia,
acepten el consejo de los sabios,
y aprendan del castigo a los malcriados.
12 Dios es justo, y sabe bien
lo que piensa el malvado;
por eso acaba por destruirlo.
13 Quien no hace caso
de las súplicas del pobre,
un día pedirá ayuda
y nadie se la dará.
14 Un buen regalo calma el enojo,
si se da en el momento oportuno.
15 El hombre honrado es feliz
cuando ve que se hace justicia,
¡pero cómo se asusta el malvado!
16 Quien deja de hacer lo bueno,
pronto termina en la tumba.
17 Quien sólo piensa en fiestas,
en perfumes y en borracheras,
se queda en la pobreza
y jamás llega a rico.
18 Los malvados y ladrones
tendrán que pagar el rescate
de los hombres buenos y honrados.
19 Vale más la soledad
que la vida matrimonial
con una persona agresiva
y de mal genio.
20 En casa del sabio
hay riquezas y perfumes;
en casa del tonto
sólo hay desperdicios.
21 Busca la justicia y el amor,
y encontrarás vida,
justicia y riquezas.
22 Basta un solo sabio
para conquistar una gran ciudad.
23 Quien tiene cuidado de lo que dice
nunca se mete en problemas.
24 Qué bien le queda al orgulloso
que lo llamen «¡malcriado y vanidoso!»
25-26 El perezoso quiere de todo,
lo que no quiere es trabajar.
El hombre honrado siempre da
y no pide nada a cambio.
27 Dios no soporta a los malvados
que le traen ofrendas,
y no son sinceros.
28 El testigo falso será destruido,
pero al testigo verdadero
siempre se le da la palabra.
29 El malvado parece estar muy seguro;
pero sólo el hombre honrado
está seguro de verdad.
30 Reconozcamos que ante Dios,
no hay sabiduría
ni conocimiento,
ni consejos que valgan.
31 A los soldados les toca
preparar sus caballos para el combate;
pero Dios es quien decide
a quién darle la victoria.
De nada valen las riquezas
22 Vale más ser conocido y respetado
que andar presumiendo de rico.
2 Los ricos y los pobres
son criaturas de Dios.
3 El que es inteligente
ve el peligro y lo evita;
el que es tonto sigue adelante
y sufre las consecuencias.
4 Humíllate y obedece a Dios,
y recibirás riquezas, honra y vida.
5 La conducta de los malvados
es una trampa para los demás;
si te cuidas a ti mismo
te apartarás de ella.
6 Educa a tu hijo desde niño,
y aun cuando llegue a viejo
seguirá tus enseñanzas.
7 El pobre trabaja para el rico;
el que pide prestado
se hace esclavo del prestamista.
8 Siembra maldad
y cosecharás desgracia;
con el palo que pegues,
serás golpeado.
9 Dios bendice al que es generoso
y al que comparte su pan con los pobres.
10 Aleja de ti al buscapleitos
y se acabarán los problemas.
11 Al que convence con su sinceridad
el rey le brinda su amistad.
12 Dios protege al sabio,
pero pone en vergüenza al mentiroso.
13 El haragán siempre pone pretextos
para no ir al trabajo;
dice que un león en la calle
se lo quiere comer.
14 Los besos de la mujer infiel
son una trampa sin fondo;
Dios no deja sin castigo
a los que se enredan con ella.
15 La necedad del niño
a golpes se corrige.
16 El rico que roba al pobre
para hacerse más rico
acabará en la miseria.
Cucharadas de sabiduría
17 Presta atención a mis palabras,
que son consejos sabios,
y ponte a pensar en mis enseñanzas.
18 Si te las aprendes de memoria
y las repites al pie de la letra,
tendrás una grata experiencia.
19-20 Confía siempre en Dios.
Hoy te doy treinta sabios consejos;
los he escrito pensando en ti.
21 Son dignos de confianza,
para que sepas responder
a quienes te pregunten.

22 No abuses del pobre
sólo porque es pobre,
ni seas injusto con él
en los tribunales.
23 Dios es abogado de los pobres,
y dejará sin nada
a quienes les quiten todo.

24 No te juntes con gente de mal genio
ni te hagas amigo de gente violenta,
25 porque puedes volverte como ellos
y pondrás tu vida en peligro.

26 No te comprometas a pagar
deudas que no sean tuyas,
27 porque si no las pagas
te quedarás en la calle.

28 Mantén el tamaño de tu terreno
tal como lo recibiste de tus padres.

y te diré quién comerá como rey.

23 Cuando comas con gente importante,
piensa bien ante quién te encuentras.
2 Si te gusta comer mucho,
no demuestres que tienes hambre.
3 No dejes que te engañe
la apariencia de esos platillos.

tu única meta en la vida,
5 pues son como las águilas:
abren las alas y salen volando.
Si acaso llegas a verlas,
muy pronto desaparecen.

ni dejes que sus platillos
te despierten el apetito.
7 Esa gente te invita a comer,
pero su invitación no es sincera;
esa gente es tan tacaña
que se fija en cuánto comes.
8 Al fin de cuentas vomitarás
todo lo que hayas comido,
y todos tus halagos
no habrán servido de nada.

porque se burlarán de ti.

tal como la recibiste de tus padres,
y no invadas el terreno
de los huérfanos.
11 Dios es su pariente más cercano
y los defenderá de ti.

Unos buenos golpes no los matarán,
14 pero sí los librarán de la muerte.

16 Muy grande será mi alegría

y obedece siempre a Dios;
18 así tu futuro será feliz.

préstame atención,
actúa con inteligencia,
y no dejes de hacer el bien.
20 No te juntes con borrachos
ni te hagas amigo de glotones,
21 pues unos y otros
acaban en la ruina.

pues ellos te dieron la vida;
y cuando lleguen a viejos,
no los abandones.
23 Acumula verdad y sabiduría,
disciplina y entendimiento,
¡y no los cambies por nada!
24-25 El hijo bueno y sabio
es motivo de gran alegría
para su padre y su madre
que le dieron la vida.

26 Querido jovencito,
prométeme que pensarás en mis consejos
y harás tuyas mis enseñanzas.
27 No hay nada más angustioso
que enredarse con la mujer infiel.
28 Esa mujer es como los bandidos:
se esconde para atrapar a sus víctimas,
y una a una las hace caer en sus redes.

29-30 El borracho llora y sufre;
anda en pleitos y se queja,
lo hieren sin motivo
y le ponen los ojos morados.
Eso le pasa por borracho,
y por probar nuevas bebidas.
31 Querido jovencito,
no te fijes en bebidas embriagantes
que atraen por su color y brillo,
pues se beben fácilmente,
32 pero muerden como víboras
y envenenan como serpientes.
33 Si las bebes, verás cosas raras
y te vendrán las ideas más tontas.
34 Sentirás que estás en un barco,
navegando en alta mar.
35 Te herirán, y no te darás cuenta;
te golpearán, y no lo sentirás.
Y cuando te despiertes
sólo una idea vendrá a tu mente:
«Quiero que me sirvan otra copa».

24 No envidies ni busques
la amistad de los malvados,
2 pues sólo piensan en la violencia
y sólo hablan de matar.

3 Construye tu casa
con sabiduría y entendimiento,
4 y llena sus cuartos de conocimiento
que es el más bello tesoro.

5 Más vale maña que fuerza;
más vale el saber que el poder.
6 Quien quiera pelear,
primero debe pensar;
quien quiera ganar,
debe saber escuchar.

7 El necio nunca llegará a ser sabio.
Cuando está ante el juez,
ni siquiera abre la boca,
pues no sabe qué decir.

se gana el título de malvado.
9 El que sólo piensa en pecar
se gana el título de necio.
¡Y nadie los aguanta!

no demuestra fuerza ni carácter.

a los que van camino a la muerte,
12 porque Dios todo lo sabe
y no podrás alegar ignorancia.
¡Si no lo haces, recibirás tu merecido!

Cómela, jovencito;
¡saboréala!
14 Quiera Dios que en la sabiduría
halles esa misma dulzura.
Si la encuentras, tendrás buen futuro
y tus deseos se verán cumplidos.

15 No tiendas trampas al hombre honrado
ni destruyas la casa donde vive.
16 No importa cuántas veces caiga,
siempre se levantará.
En cambio, el malvado cae
y no vuelve a levantarse.

ni te alegres de su desgracia;
18 si Dios te ve,
no aprobará tu conducta
y se enojará contigo.

ni les tengas envidia,
20 pues no tendrán un final feliz;
¡su vida será una lámpara apagada!

obedece a Dios y al rey,
y no te juntes con gente rebelde,
22 pues tal vez Dios los castigue
cuando tú menos lo esperes,
¡y quién sabe qué puede pasar!

de un tipo tonto y perezoso.

El terreno estaba lleno de hierba,

and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.
2 Fools find no pleasure in understanding

and with shame comes reproach.

but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.
6 The lips of fools bring them strife,

they go down to the inmost parts.(CL)
9 One who is slack in his work

they imagine it a wall too high to scale.
12 Before a downfall the heart is haughty,

13 To answer before listening—

14 The human spirit can endure in sickness,

15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge,(CT)
for the ears of the wise seek it out.

and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.
17 In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right,
until someone comes forward and cross-examines.
18 Casting the lot settles disputes(CV)
and keeps strong opponents apart.
19 A brother wronged(CW) is more unyielding than a fortified city;
disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.
20 From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled;
with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.(CX)
23 The poor plead for mercy,
but the rich answer harshly.
24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.(DC)
19 Better the poor whose walk is blameless
than a fool whose lips are perverse.(DD)
2 Desire without knowledge is not good—
how much more will hasty feet miss the way!(DE)
4 Wealth attracts many friends,
but even the closest friend of the poor person deserts them.(DH)
7 The poor are shunned by all their relatives—
how much more do their friends avoid them!(DN)
Though the poor pursue them with pleading,
they are nowhere to be found.[d](DO)
8 The one who gets wisdom loves life;
the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.(DP)
9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
and whoever pours out lies will perish.(DQ)
10 It is not fitting for a fool(DR) to live in luxury—
how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!(DS)
11 A person’s wisdom yields patience;(DT)
it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.
13 A foolish child is a father’s ruin,(DX)
and a quarrelsome wife is like
the constant dripping of a leaky roof.(DY)
15 Laziness brings on deep sleep,
and the shiftless go hungry.(EB)
16 Whoever keeps commandments keeps their life,
but whoever shows contempt for their ways will die.(EC)
17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord,(ED)
and he will reward them for what they have done.(EE)
18 Discipline your children, for in that there is hope;
do not be a willing party to their death.(EF)
19 A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty;
rescue them, and you will have to do it again.
20 Listen to advice and accept discipline,(EG)
and at the end you will be counted among the wise.(EH)
21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.(EI)
22 What a person desires is unfailing love[e];
better to be poor than a liar.
23 The fear of the Lord leads to life;
then one rests content, untouched by trouble.(EJ)
24 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
he will not even bring it back to his mouth!(EK)
25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
rebuke the discerning,(EL) and they will gain knowledge.(EM)

is a child who brings shame and disgrace.
27 Stop listening to instruction, my son,(EO)
and you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28 A corrupt witness mocks at justice,

29 Penalties are prepared for mockers,
and beatings for the backs of fools.(EQ)

those who anger him forfeit their lives.(EW)
5 The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters,(FB)
but one who has insight draws them out.
6 Many claim to have unfailing love,
but a faithful person who can find?(FC)
10 Differing weights and differing measures—
the Lord detests them both.(FJ)
11 Even small children are known by their actions,
so is their conduct really pure(FK) and upright?
12 Ears that hear and eyes that see—
the Lord has made them both.(FL)
13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor;(FM)
stay awake and you will have food to spare.
14 “It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer—
then goes off and boasts about the purchase.
15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance,
but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.
16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold it in pledge(FN) if it is done for an outsider.(FO)
18 Plans are established by seeking advice;
so if you wage war, obtain guidance.(FR)
19 A gossip betrays a confidence;(FS)
so avoid anyone who talks too much.
20 If someone curses their father or mother,(FT)
their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.(FU)
21 An inheritance claimed too soon
will not be blessed at the end.
22 Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!”(FV)
Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.(FW)
23 The Lord detests differing weights,
and dishonest scales do not please him.(FX)
24 A person’s steps are directed(FY) by the Lord.(FZ)
How then can anyone understand their own way?(GA)
25 It is a trap to dedicate something rashly
and only later to consider one’s vows.(GB)
26 A wise king winnows out the wicked;
he drives the threshing wheel over them.(GC)
29 The glory of young men is their strength,
gray hair the splendor of the old.(GH)
21 In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water
that he channels toward all who please him.(GK)
2 A person may think their own ways are right,
but the Lord weighs the heart.(GL)
3 To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.(GM)
4 Haughty eyes(GN) and a proud heart—
the unplowed field of the wicked—produce sin.
5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit(GO)
as surely as haste leads to poverty.
7 The violence of the wicked will drag them away,(GQ)
for they refuse to do what is right.
8 The way of the guilty is devious,(GR)
but the conduct of the innocent is upright.
9 Better to live on a corner of the roof
than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.(GS)
10 The wicked crave evil;
their neighbors get no mercy from them.
11 When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom;
by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.(GT)
14 A gift given in secret soothes anger,
and a bribe concealed in the cloak pacifies great wrath.(GX)
15 When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous
but terror to evildoers.(GY)
16 Whoever strays from the path of prudence
comes to rest in the company of the dead.(GZ)
17 Whoever loves pleasure will become poor;
whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich.(HA)
18 The wicked become a ransom(HB) for the righteous,
and the unfaithful for the upright.
19 Better to live in a desert
than with a quarrelsome and nagging wife.(HC)
20 The wise store up choice food and olive oil,
but fools gulp theirs down.
22 One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty(HF)
and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.
24 The proud and arrogant person(HI)—“Mocker” is his name—
behaves with insolent fury.
25 The craving of a sluggard will be the death of him,(HJ)
because his hands refuse to work.
26 All day long he craves for more,
but the righteous(HK) give without sparing.(HL)
27 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable(HM)—
how much more so when brought with evil intent!(HN)
29 The wicked put up a bold front,
but the upright give thought to their ways.(HQ)
31 The horse is made ready for the day of battle,
but victory rests with the Lord.(HT)
22 A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.(HU)
2 Rich and poor have this in common:
The Lord is the Maker of them all.(HV)
5 In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls,(IA)
but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.
6 Start(IB) children off on the way they should go,(IC)
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.(ID)
7 The rich rule over the poor,
and the borrower is slave to the lender.
10 Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife;
quarrels and insults are ended.(II)
11 One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace

12 The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge,
but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.
13 The sluggard says, “There’s a lion outside!(IK)
I’ll be killed in the public square!”
14 The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit;(IL)
a man who is under the Lord’s wrath falls into it.(IM)
15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.(IN)
16 One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth
and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty.
Thirty Sayings of the Wise
Saying 1
17 Pay attention(IO) and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise;(IP)
apply your heart to what I teach,(IQ)
18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart
and have all of them ready on your lips.
19 So that your trust may be in the Lord,
I teach you today, even you.
20 Have I not written thirty sayings for you,
sayings of counsel and knowledge,
21 teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth,(IR)
so that you bring back truthful reports
to those you serve?
Saying 2
22 Do not exploit the poor(IS) because they are poor
and do not crush the needy in court,(IT)
23 for the Lord will take up their case(IU)
and will exact life for life.(IV)
Saying 3
24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person,
do not associate with one easily angered,
25 or you may learn their ways
and get yourself ensnared.(IW)
Saying 4
26 Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge(IX)
or puts up security for debts;
27 if you lack the means to pay,
your very bed will be snatched from under you.(IY)
Saying 5
28 Do not move an ancient boundary stone(IZ)
set up by your ancestors.
Saying 6
29 Do you see someone skilled(JA) in their work?
They will serve(JB) before kings;(JC)
they will not serve before officials of low rank.
Saying 7
23 When you sit to dine with a ruler,

2 and put a knife to your throat

if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.

or gorge themselves on meat,

29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow?

when it goes down smoothly!
32 In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
33 Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
34 You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
35 “They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
