16 holding fast the word of life, so that (A)I may rejoice in the day of Christ that (B)I have not run in vain or labored in (C)vain.

17 Yes, and if (D)I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice (E)and service of your faith, (F)I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.

Timothy Commended

19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send (G)Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your [a]state. 20 For I have no one (H)like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, (I)that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. 23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. 24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly.

Epaphroditus Praised

25 Yet I considered it necessary to send to you (J)Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and (K)fellow soldier, (L)but your messenger and (M)the one who ministered to my need; 26 (N)since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; 30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, [b]not regarding his life, (O)to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.

All for Christ

Finally, my brethren, (P)rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.

(Q)Beware of dogs, beware of (R)evil workers, (S)beware of the mutilation! For we are (T)the circumcision, (U)who worship [c]God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though (V)I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I (W)more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, (X)of the tribe of Benjamin, (Y)a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, (Z)a Pharisee; concerning zeal, (AA)persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

But (AB)what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.

16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ(A) that I did not run(B) or labor in vain.(C) 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering(D) on the sacrifice(E) and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.(F) 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Timothy and Epaphroditus

19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy(G) to you soon,(H) that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him,(I) who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests,(J) not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father(K) he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.(L) 24 And I am confident(M) in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker(N) and fellow soldier,(O) who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.(P) 26 For he longs for all of you(Q) and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him,(R) so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,(S) 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.(T)

No Confidence in the Flesh

Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again,(U) and it is a safeguard for you. Watch out for those dogs,(V) those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. For it is we who are the circumcision,(W) we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus,(X) and who put no confidence in the flesh— though I myself have reasons for such confidence.(Y)

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised(Z) on the eighth day, of the people of Israel,(AA) of the tribe of Benjamin,(AB) a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee;(AC) as for zeal,(AD) persecuting the church;(AE) as for righteousness based on the law,(AF) faultless.

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss(AG) for the sake of Christ.
