31 Khi Môi-se đã nói xong những lời ấy với dân I-sơ-ra-ên, 2 ông nói với họ, “Ngày nay tôi được một trăm hai mươi tuổi rồi. Tôi không thể đi ra đi vào được nữa. Chúa đã bảo tôi, ‘Ngươi sẽ không qua Sông Giô-đanh nầy.’ 3 Chính Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của anh chị em, sẽ đi qua sông với anh chị em. Ngài sẽ tiêu diệt các dân tộc đó trước mặt anh chị em, và anh chị em sẽ chiếm lấy xứ sở của chúng. Giô-suê cũng sẽ qua sông với anh chị em như Chúa đã hứa. 4 Chúa sẽ làm cho chúng như Ngài đã làm cho Si-hôn và Óc, các vua dân A-mô-ri và cho xứ sở của họ khi Ngài tiêu diệt họ. 5 Chúa sẽ trao chúng cho anh chị em để anh chị em đối xử với chúng y theo mọi mệnh lệnh mà tôi đã truyền cho anh chị em. 6 Hãy mạnh mẽ và can đảm! Ðừng sợ và đừng kinh hãi chúng, vì Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của anh chị em, sẽ đi với anh chị em. Ngài sẽ không để cho anh chị em thất vọng và không lìa bỏ anh chị em đâu.”
7 Sau đó Môi-se gọi Giô-suê đến và nói với ông trước mặt toàn thể I-sơ-ra-ên, “Hãy mạnh mẽ và can đảm, vì con là người sẽ đi với dân nầy vào xứ mà Chúa đã thề với tổ tiên họ để ban cho họ, và con sẽ lãnh đạo họ để họ chiếm lấy xứ ấy. 8 Chính Chúa sẽ đi trước con. Ngài sẽ ở với con. Ngài sẽ không để con thất vọng và không bỏ con. Chớ sợ hãi và chớ ngã lòng.”

9 Bấy giờ Môi-se ghi lại bộ luật pháp nầy, rồi trao cho các tư tế, các con của Lê-vi, những người khiêng Rương Giao Ước của Chúa và trao cho tất cả các trưởng lão của I-sơ-ra-ên. 10 Môi-se truyền cho họ, “Cứ mỗi bảy năm, vào năm tha nợ, nhân dịp Lễ Lều Tạm, 11 khi toàn dân I-sơ-ra-ên đến ra mắt Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của anh chị em, tại nơi Ngài sẽ chọn, anh chị em hãy đọc sách nầy cho họ nghe. 12 Hãy triệu tập dân lại, đàn ông, đàn bà, trẻ em, luôn cả những kiều dân sống trong các thành của anh chị em, để họ có thể nghe và học biết kính sợ Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của anh chị em, và hết lòng vâng giữ mọi lời của bộ luật pháp nầy, 13 hầu con cháu họ, những kẻ chưa biết gì về bộ luật nầy, được nghe và học biết kính sợ Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của anh chị em, suốt những ngày anh chị em sống trong xứ mà anh chị em sẽ qua Sông Giô-đanh chiếm lấy.”
Lệnh Chúa Truyền cho Môi-se và Giô-suê
14 Chúa phán với Môi-se, “Ngày ngươi sắp qua đời đã gần. Hãy gọi Giô-suê đến và hai ngươi hãy vào trình diện trong Lều Hội Kiến để Ta trao quyền cho nó.” Vậy Môi-se và Giô-suê đến và vào trình diện trong Lều Hội Kiến. 15 Chúa hiện ra trong một trụ mây ở Lều Hội Kiến, và trụ mây ấy đứng trên cửa Lều.
16 Chúa phán với Môi-se, “Nầy, ngươi sắp nằm xuống an giấc với tổ tiên ngươi; còn dân nầy sẽ trỗi dậy và làm điếm cho các thần của các dân ngoại trong xứ, nơi chúng sẽ vào chiếm lấy. Chúng sẽ lìa bỏ Ta và phá bỏ giao ước Ta, tức giao ước Ta đã lập với chúng. 17 Trong ngày đó cơn giận Ta sẽ phừng lên nghịch lại chúng. Ta sẽ lìa bỏ chúng và ẩn mặt Ta khỏi chúng. Chúng sẽ bị ăn nuốt, rồi nhiều tai họa và hoạn nạn sẽ xảy đến cho chúng. Trong những ngày ấy chúng sẽ nói rằng, ‘Phải chăng những hoạn nạn nầy xảy đến cho chúng ta bởi vì Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta không ở giữa chúng ta?’ 18 Trong những ngày ấy, chắc chắn Ta sẽ ẩn mặt Ta, vì mọi tội lỗi chúng đã làm khi chúng quay theo các thần khác.
Bài Ca Giáo Huấn
19 Vậy bây giờ hãy ghi lại bài ca nầy và dạy nó cho dân I-sơ-ra-ên. Hãy đặt bài ca ấy vào miệng chúng, để về sau nó sẽ thành một bài ca làm chứng cho Ta đối với dân I-sơ-ra-ên, 20 vì sau khi Ta đem chúng vào xứ đượm sữa và mật mà Ta đã dùng lời thề mà hứa với tổ tiên chúng, chúng sẽ được ăn uống no nê và mập béo, rồi chúng sẽ quay theo các thần khác và thờ lạy các thần ấy; chúng sẽ khinh bỉ Ta và phá bỏ giao ước Ta. 21 Khi các hoạn nạn khủng khiếp giáng xuống trên chúng, bài ca nầy sẽ trở thành một bằng chứng nghịch lại chúng. Vì thế bài ca nầy sẽ không được mất khỏi môi miệng của con cháu chúng, vì Ta biết ngay cả bây giờ chúng đã có ý muốn làm gì rồi, tức trước khi Ta đem chúng vào trong xứ Ta đã dùng lời thề mà hứa với chúng.”
22 Vậy nội ngày hôm đó Môi-se viết bài ca nầy và dạy nó cho dân I-sơ-ra-ên.
23 Kế đó Chúa trao quyền cho Giô-suê con trai của Nun mà rằng, “Hãy mạnh mẽ và can đảm, vì ngươi sẽ đem dân I-sơ-ra-ên vào xứ Ta đã dùng lời thề mà hứa với chúng. Ta sẽ ở với ngươi.”
Ðặt Sách Luật Pháp Bên Cạnh Rương Giao Ước
24 Khi Môi-se đã viết xong những lời nầy vào trong một cuộn sách, từ đầu đến cuối, 25 Môi-se truyền cho những người Lê-vi khiêng Rương Giao Ước của Chúa rằng, 26 “Hãy lấy cuộn sách luật pháp nầy và đặt nó bên Rương Giao Ước của Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của anh chị em. Hãy để nó luôn ở đó để làm bằng chứng nghịch lại anh chị em, 27 vì tôi biết tính anh chị em hay phản nghịch và cứng cổ như thế nào. Nầy, ngày nay, ngay cả lúc tôi còn sống giữa anh chị em đây mà bao phen anh chị em đã phản nghịch rồi, huống chi là sau khi tôi qua đời!
Tập Họp Ðể Nghe Bài Ca
28 Xin mời tất cả các trưởng lão của các chi tộc và những quan chức của anh chị em nhóm lại bên tôi, để tôi có thể nói cho họ nghe những lời nầy và gọi trời cùng đất làm chứng nghịch lại họ. 29 Vì tôi biết chắc rằng sau khi tôi qua đời, anh chị em sẽ hư hỏng và sẽ quay khỏi con đường tôi đã truyền cho anh chị em. Sau nầy hoạn nạn sẽ giáng xuống trên anh chị em, vì anh chị em sẽ làm điều ác trước thánh nhan Chúa, chọc Ngài giận bằng công trình của tay mình.”
30 Bấy giờ Môi-se nói lên những lời của bài ca nầy, từ đầu đến cuối, cho toàn thể hội chúng I-sơ-ra-ên nghe:

Moses’ Last Counsel
31 So Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2 And he said to them, “I am [a]a hundred and twenty years old today; I am no longer able to come in and go out [as your spiritual and military leader], and the Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross this Jordan.’ 3 It is the Lord your God who will cross ahead of you; He will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua is the one who will go across before you [to lead you], just as the Lord has said. 4 The Lord will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. 5 The Lord will hand them over to you, and you shall do to them in accordance with all the commandments which I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble in dread before them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not fail you or abandon you.”
7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all [the people of] Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance. 8 It is the Lord who goes before you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of year when debts are forgiven, at the Feast of Booths (Tabernacles), 11 when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses, you shall read this law before all [the people of] Israel [b]so that they may hear. 12 Assemble the people, the men and the women and children and the stranger (resident alien, foreigner) within your cities, so that they may hear and learn and fear the Lord your God [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], and be careful to obey all the words of this law. 13 Their children, who have not known [the law], will hear and learn to fear [and worship] the Lord your God, as long as you live in the land which you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
Israel Will Fall Away
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, the time for you to die is near; call Joshua, and present yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting. 15 Then the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood beside the doorway of the tent. 16 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to lie down [in death] with your fathers; and this people will arise and [c]play the prostitute (commit apostasy) with the foreign gods [of the people] of the land, where they go to be among them. They will abandon (turn away from) Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 Then My anger will be kindled and burn against them in that day, and I will abandon (turn away from) them and hide My face from them. They will be devoured, and many evils and troubles will come on them, so that they will say in that day, ‘Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have come on us?’ 18 But I will certainly hide My face [from them] in that day because of all the evil which they will do, for they will turn to other gods [to worship lifeless idols, to honor handmade relics].
19 “Now then, write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it in their mouth, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. 20 For when I bring them into the land which I have sworn to their fathers, a land [of plenty] [d]flowing with milk and honey, and they have eaten and are satisfied and become prosperous, then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and despise and reject Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it shall come about, when many evils and troubles have come on them, that this [sacred] song will confront them as a witness; for it will not be forgotten from the mouth of their descendants. For I know their inclination which is developing even now, before I bring them into the land which I have sworn to give them.” 22 So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the children of Israel.(A)
Joshua Is Commissioned
23 Then He commanded and commissioned Joshua, the son of Nun, and said, “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the sons of Israel into the land which I have sworn to give them, and I will be with you.”
24 And when Moses completely finished writing the words of this law in a book, 25 he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying, 26 “Take this Book of the Law and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you. 27 For I know your rebellion and contention and your stubbornness; behold, while I am still alive with you today, you have been rebellious against the Lord; how much more, then, after my death? 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, so that I may speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and earth as witnesses against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will behave corruptly and turn from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will come upon you in the latter days, because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands.”
30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended:

- Deuteronomy 31:2 Lit a son of one hundred-twenty years.
- Deuteronomy 31:11 Lit in their hearing.
- Deuteronomy 31:16 I.e. abandon the true God for worthless idols.
- Deuteronomy 31:20 This phrase referred to the abundant fertility of the land of Canaan. Milk (typically that of goats and sheep) was associated with abundance; “honey” referred mainly to syrups made from dates or grapes and was the epitome of sweetness. Bees’ honey was very rare and was considered the choicest of foods.

31 And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.
2 And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the Lord hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
3 The Lord thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the Lord hath said.
4 And the Lord shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed.
5 And the Lord shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.
6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and unto all the elders of Israel.
10 And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,
11 When all Israel is come to appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
12 Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
13 And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.
15 And the Lord appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle.
16 And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?
18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.
21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.
22 Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.
23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.
24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,
25 That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying,
26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the Lord; and how much more after my death?
28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.
29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.
30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.
