Aanwijzingen voor viering van Pesach

9 De Here gaf Mozes de volgende instructies, terwijl hij en de Israëlieten verbleven in de woestijn op het Sinaï-schiereiland in de eerste maand van het tweede jaar na de uittocht uit Egypte: 2,3 ‘Het volk Israël moet Pesach, het Paasfeest, jaarlijks vieren op de veertiende dag van de eerste maand. Het feest begint ʼs avonds. Zorg ervoor dat u al mijn opdrachten voor dit feest nauwgezet uitvoert.’ 4,5 Dus kondigde Mozes aan dat Pesach op de avond van de veertiende dag daar in de Sinaï zou beginnen, net zoals de Here hem had opgedragen en zo gebeurde het. 6 Het geval deed zich voor dat enkele mannen onrein waren omdat zij een dode hadden aangeraakt. Zij konden Pesach dus niet meevieren en niet van het lam eten. 7 Zij legden hun probleem aan Mozes en Aäron voor en vertelden dat zij zich tekort gedaan voelden omdat zij hun offers niet op de vastgestelde tijd mochten brengen. 8 Mozes zei dat hij God om raad zou vragen 9 en dit was het antwoord dat hij van de Here ontving: 10 ‘Als de Israëlieten—nu of in de toekomst—op het moment van Pesach, het Paasfeest, onrein zijn doordat zij een dode hebben aangeraakt of omdat zij op reis zijn, mogen zij Pesach wel vieren, maar dan een maand later. 11 Zij doen dit dan op de veertiende van de tweede maand, beginnend in de avond. Zij moeten dan het lam eten met ongezuurd brood en bittere kruiden. 12 Zij mogen niets laten liggen tot de volgende morgen, geen enkel bot van het lam breken en de gegeven aanwijzingen voor Pesach nauwkeurig opvolgen. 13 Maar iemand die niet onrein of onderweg is en weigert Pesach op de aangegeven tijd te vieren, moet uit het volk Israël worden verbannen, omdat hij weigert de Here op de vastgestelde tijd een offer te brengen, hij moet zijn schuld dragen. 14 Als er een buitenlander bij u woont die Pesach, het Paasfeest voor de Here, wil meevieren, moet hij dezelfde instructies opvolgen. Er is één wet voor allen, zowel voor uw volksgenoten als voor vreemdelingen.’

15 Op de dag dat de tabernakel werd opgezet, bedekte de wolk deze en ʼs nachts veranderde de wolk in een zuil van vuur die de hele nacht zichtbaar bleef. 16 Zo ging het voortdurend: overdag een wolk en ʼs nachts een vuurzuil. 17 Wanneer de wolk opsteeg, braken de Israëlieten op, volgden hem naar de plaats waar hij stopte en sloegen daar het kamp op. 18 Op die manier reisden zij op bevel van de Here, stopten waar Hij het wilde en bleven daar tot de wolk weer verder ging. 19,20 Als hij lang bleef, bleven zij ook lang. Maar als hij maar enkele dagen bleef, bleven zij ook maar enkele dagen, want dat had de Here hun opgedragen. 21 Soms bleef de vuurzuil slechts één nacht stilstaan om de volgende morgen verder te trekken. Maar of het nu dag of nacht was, wanneer de wolk zich bewoog, braken de Israëlieten op en volgden hem. 22 Als de wolk twee dagen, een maand of een jaar boven de tabernakel bleef, bleven de Israëlieten ook zolang, maar zo gauw hij weer bewoog, trokken zij verder. 23 Op aanwijzing van de Here sloegen zij hun kamp op en op zijn bevel trokken zij weer verder. Zij volgden precies alle aanwijzingen op die de Here hun door Mozes gaf.

The Passover

9 Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in (A)the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2 “Now the sons of Israel are to [a]celebrate the Passover at (B)its appointed time. 3 On the fourteenth day of this month, [b]at twilight, you shall celebrate it at its appointed time; you shall celebrate it in accordance with all its statutes and all its ordinances.” 4 So Moses [c]told the sons of Israel to celebrate the Passover. 5 And (C)they celebrated the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; (D)in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did. 6 But there were some men who were (E)unclean because of contact with a [d]dead person, so that they could not celebrate Passover on that day; and (F)they came before Moses and Aaron on that day. 7 Those men said to him, “Though we are unclean because of a [e]dead person, why are we kept from presenting the offering of the Lord at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?” 8 Moses then said to them, “[f](G)Wait, and I will listen to what the Lord will command concerning you.”

9 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If any one of you or of your generations becomes unclean because of a dead [g]person, or is on a distant journey, he may, however, celebrate the Passover to the Lord. 11 In the second month on the (H)fourteenth day at twilight, they shall celebrate it; they (I)shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They (J)shall not leave any of it until morning, (K)nor break a bone of it; they shall celebrate it in accordance with the whole statute of the Passover. 13 (L)But the person who is clean and is not on a journey, yet refrains from celebrating the Passover, that [h]person shall then be cut off from his people, because he did not present the offering of the Lord at its appointed time. That person (M)will bear the responsibility for his sin. 14 And (N)if a stranger resides among you and [i]celebrates the Passover to the Lord, according to the statute of the Passover and its ordinance, so he shall celebrate it; you shall have [j]the (O)same statute, both for the stranger and for the native of the land.’”

The Cloud on the Tabernacle

15 Now on (P)the day that the tabernacle was erected, (Q)the cloud covered the tabernacle, the (R)tent of the testimony, and (S)in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle until morning. 16 That is how it was continuously; (T)the cloud would cover it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. 17 (U)Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp. 18 At the [k]command of the Lord the sons of Israel would set out, and at the [l]command of the Lord they would camp; (V)as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped. 19 Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, [m]the sons of Israel would comply with the Lord’s ordinance and not set out. 20 If [n]sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, (W)in accordance with the [o]command of the Lord they remained camped. Then in accordance with the [p]command of the Lord they set out. 21 If [q]sometimes the cloud [r]remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning they would set out; or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out. 22 Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, staying above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but (X)when it was lifted, they did set out. 23 (Y)At the [s]command of the Lord they camped, and at the [t]command of the Lord they set out; they did what the Lord required, in accordance with the [u]command of the Lord through Moses.

The Passover

9 The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month(A) of the second year after they came out of Egypt.(B) He said, 2 “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover(C) at the appointed time.(D) 3 Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month,(E) in accordance with all its rules and regulations.(F)”

4 So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover,(G) 5 and they did so in the Desert of Sinai(H) at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month.(I) The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.(J)

6 But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean(K) on account of a dead body.(L) So they came to Moses and Aaron(M) that same day 7 and said to Moses, “We have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lord’s offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?(N)”

8 Moses answered them, “Wait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.”(O)

9 Then the Lord said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body(P) or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate(Q) the Lord’s Passover, 11 but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month(R) at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.(S) 12 They must not leave any of it till morning(T) or break any of its bones.(U) When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.(V) 13 But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people(W) for not presenting the Lord’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.

14 “‘A foreigner(X) residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”

The Cloud Above the Tabernacle

15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law,(Y) was set up,(Z) the cloud(AA) covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire.(AB) 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire.(AC) 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out;(AD) wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped.(AE) 18 At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained(AF) in camp. 19 When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lord’s order(AG) and did not set out.(AH) 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lord’s command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the Lord’s command they encamped, and at the Lord’s command they set out. They obeyed the Lord’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.
