Mozes stuurt twaalf verkenners uit
13 De Heer zei tegen Mozes: 2 "Stuur verkenners Kanaän in. Ze moeten het land verkennen dat Ik aan de Israëlieten zal geven. Stuur van elke stam één man. Elke man moet een leider van zijn stam zijn." 3 Toen stuurde Mozes verkenners op pad vanuit de Paran-woestijn, zoals de Heer bevolen had. Ze behoorden allemaal tot de leiders van hun stam. 4 Het waren:
Sammua, de zoon van Zakkur, van de stam van Ruben.
5 Safat, de zoon van Hori, van de stam van Simeon.
6 Kaleb, de zoon van Jefunne, van de stam van Juda.
7 Jigeal, de zoon van Jozef, van de stam van Issaschar.
8 Hosea, de zoon van Nun, van de stam van Efraïm.
9 Palti, de zoon van Rafu, van de stam van Benjamin.
10 Gaddiël, de zoon van Sodi, van de stam van Zebulon.
11 Gaddi, de zoon van Susi, van de stam van Manasse van de stam van Jozef.
12 Ammiël, de zoon van Gemalli, van de stam van Dan.
13 Setur, de zoon van Michaël, van de stam van Aser.
14 Nabi, de zoon van Wofsi, van de stam van Naftali.
15 Guël, de zoon van Machi, van de stam van Gad.
16 Dit zijn de mannen die Mozes er op uit stuurde om het land te verkennen. En Mozes gaf Hosea (= 'helper'), de zoon van Nun, een andere naam: Jozua (= 'de Heer helpt').
17 Mozes stuurde hen er op uit om het land te verkennen. Hij zei tegen hen: "Trek door het Zuiderland het bergland in. 18 Ga kijken wat voor land het is, en wat voor volk er woont. Of dat volk sterk is of zwak, en of ze met veel mensen zijn of met weinig. 19 Kijk of het land waarin dat volk woont goed is of slecht. En of er muren om hun steden staan of niet, of dat ze in tenten wonen. 20 Kijk of de grond goed is of slecht en of er bossen zijn of niet. Wees niet bang. Breng ook iets mee van de vruchten van het land." Het was toen net de tijd dat de eerste druiven rijp waren.
21 Ze vertrokken en verkenden het land vanaf de Zin-woestijn tot aan Rehob, waar de weg naar Hamat begint. 22 Ze trokken door het Zuiderland, tot aan Hebron. Daar woonden Ahiman, Sesai en Talmai, uit de familie van Enak.[a] (Hebron is zeven jaar eerder gebouwd dan Zoan in Egypte.) 23 Toen ze in het Eskol-dal gekomen waren, sneden ze daar een tak met een tros druiven af. Die tros was zó zwaar, dat ze hem met z'n tweeën aan een draagstok moesten dragen. Ook namen ze granaatappels en vijgen mee. 24 Ze noemden dat dal Eskol (= 'tros'), omdat ze daar de druiventros hadden afgesneden.
De verkenners komen terug
25 Na 40 dagen kwamen ze terug in het kamp in Kades in de Paran-woestijn. 26 Ze gingen naar Mozes en Aäron en het hele volk van de Israëlieten en vertelden wat ze allemaal hadden gezien. Ook lieten ze de vruchten van het land zien die ze hadden meegebracht. 27 Ze vertelden: "We kwamen in het land waar jullie ons heen gestuurd hadden, en ja, het is een prachtig en vruchtbaar land. Dit zijn de vruchten die daar groeien. 28 Maar het volk dat er woont, is sterk. En de steden zijn groot en hebben sterke muren. En we hebben er Enakieten gezien! Dat zijn reuzen! 29 In het Zuiderland wonen de Amalekieten, in de bergen de Hetieten, Jebusieten en Amorieten. Langs de zee en langs de Jordaan wonen de Kanaänieten."
30 Kaleb probeerde het volk rustig te krijgen, want door dit nieuws kwam het volk tegen Mozes in opstand. Hij zei: "We kunnen gerust optrekken en het land veroveren. Want we zullen hen verslaan." 31 Maar de andere verkenners zeiden: "We kunnen dat volk niet aanvallen! Zij zijn sterker dan wij!" 32 Ze strooiden onder de Israëlieten praatjes rond over het land dat ze verkend hadden. Ze zeiden: "We zullen niet in leven kunnen blijven in dat land waar we geweest zijn! En alle mensen die we daar hebben gezien, zijn heel erg groot. 33 We hebben er zelfs reuzen gezien: Enakieten. Met hen vergeleken zijn wij maar sprinkhanen, en zo dachten zij óók over ons!"

The Spies Sent into Canaan
13 Then (A)Yahweh spoke to Moses saying, 2 “(B)Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the [a]command of Yahweh, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel. 4 These then were their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, (C)Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, (D)Hoshea the son of Nun;
9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; but Moses called (E)Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
17 So Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up [b]there into (F)the [c]Negev; then go up into the hill country. 18 And see what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many. 19 And how is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they [d]like open camps or with fortifications? 20 (G)And how is the land, is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not? [e]Make an (H)effort then to get some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.
21 So they went up and spied out the land from (I)the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, [f](J)at Lebo-hamath. 22 And they had gone up into (K)the Negev and [g]came to Hebron where (L)Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the [h]descendants of (M)Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before (N)Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Then they came to the [i]valley of [j](O)Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men with some of the pomegranates and the figs. 24 That place was called the valley of [k]Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.
The Spies Recount What They Saw
25 Then they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days, 26 and went and came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel [l]in the wilderness of Paran, at (P)Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Thus they recounted to him and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and (Q)it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and (R)this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, (S)the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw (T)the [m]descendants of Anak there. 29 Amalek is living in the land of (U)the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and (V)the Amorites are living in the hill country, and (W)the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”
30 Then Caleb quieted the people [n]before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we are surely able to overcome it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “(X)We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.” 32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel (Y)a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land, which we have passed through to spy out on, is (Z)a land that devours its [o]inhabitants; and (AA)all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. 33 There also we saw the (AB)Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and (AC)we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
