Offerings at the Dwelling’s Dedication

On the day that Moses finished setting up the Dwelling, he anointed and consecrated it with all of its furnishings and the altar with all of its utensils. He anointed and consecrated them.

The tribal chiefs of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ houses, brought offerings. These were the chiefs of the tribes, who were in charge of the registration. They brought as their offering before the Lord six covered carts[a] and twelve oxen—a cart for every two tribal chiefs and an ox for every tribal chief. They presented them in front of the Dwelling.

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Accept these gifts from them so that they may be used for doing the work at the Tent of Meeting. You are to give them to the Levites as each one’s work requires.”

Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. He gave two carts and four oxen to the descendants of Gershon as their work required. He gave four carts and eight oxen to the descendants of Merari, as required for their work under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. Footnotes

  1. Numbers 7:3 Or wagons. Ancient pictorial evidence, however, suggests the vehicles were two-wheeled ox carts, not four-wheeled wagons.
  2. Numbers 7:13 Etymology suggests that a qe’ara is a deep dish or bowl, but some think it means platter.
  3. Numbers 7:13 One hundred thirty shekels amounts to about fifty-two ounces. Seventy regular shekels amounts to about twenty-eight ounces. Presumably the sanctuary shekel weighed more.
  4. Numbers 7:14 Kaf refers to the palm of the hand, so it refers to a small bowl, spoon, or ladle.
  5. Numbers 7:17 A different and rarer Hebrew word for goat than that used in verse 16. Also in verses 23, 29, 35, 41, 47, 53, 59, 65, 71, 77, 83, 87, and 88.
  6. Numbers 7:89 Traditionally mercy seat

And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them;

That the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered:

And they brought their offering before the Lord, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle.

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service.

And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites.

Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:

And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
