War with Midian
31 The Lord spoke to Moses, 2 “Execute vengeance for the Israelites against the Midianites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
3 So Moses spoke to the people, “Equip some of your men for war. They will go against Midian to inflict the Lord’s vengeance(A) on them. 4 Send 1,000 men to war from each Israelite tribe.” 5 So 1,000 were recruited from each Israelite tribe out of the thousands[a] in Israel—12,000 equipped for war. 6 Moses sent 1,000 from each tribe to war. They went with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, in whose care were the holy objects and signal trumpets.
7 They waged war against Midian, as the Lord had commanded Moses, and killed every male. 8 Along with the others slain by them, they killed the Midianite kings—Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian.(B) They also killed Balaam son of Beor(C) with the sword. 9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their children captive, and they plundered all their cattle, flocks, and property.(D) 10 Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites lived, as well as all their encampments, 11 and took away all the spoils of war and the captives, both man and beast. 12 They brought the prisoners, animals, and spoils of war to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the Israelite community at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
13 Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 But Moses became furious with the officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, who were returning from the military campaign. 15 “Have[b] you let every female live?” he asked them. 16 “Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam’s advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the Lord in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the Lord’s community.(E) 17 So now, kill all the male children and kill every woman who has had sexual relations with a man, 18 but keep alive for yourselves all the young females who have not had sexual relations.
19 “You are to remain outside the camp for seven days. All of you and your prisoners who have killed a person or touched the dead are to purify yourselves on the third day and the seventh day. 20 Also purify everything: garments, leather goods, things made of goat hair, and every article of wood.”(F)
21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone to battle, “This is the legal statute the Lord commanded Moses: 22 Only the gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead— 23 everything that can withstand fire—you are to pass through fire, and it will be clean. It must still be purified with the purification water.(G) Anything that cannot withstand fire, pass through the water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp.”
25 The Lord told Moses, 26 “You, Eleazar the priest, and the family leaders of the community are to take a count of what was captured, man and beast. 27 Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to war and the entire community. 28 Set aside a tribute for the Lord from what belongs to the fighting men who went out to war: one out of every 500 humans, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats. 29 Take the tribute from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as a contribution to the Lord. 30 From the Israelites’ half, take one out of every 50 from the people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats, all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who perform the duties of[c] the Lord’s tabernacle.”
31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses. 32 The captives remaining from the plunder the army had taken totaled:
675,000 sheep and goats,
33 72,000 cattle,
34 61,000 donkeys,
35 and 32,000 people, all the females who had not had sexual relations with a man.
36 The half portion for those who went out to war numbered:
337,500 sheep and goats,
37 and the tribute to the Lord was 675
from the sheep and goats;
38 from the 36,000 cattle,
the tribute to the Lord was 72;
39 from the 30,500 donkeys,
the tribute to the Lord was 61;
40 and from the 16,000 people,
the tribute to the Lord was 32 people.
41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as a contribution for the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
42 From the Israelites’ half, which Moses separated from the men who fought, 43 the community’s half was:
337,500 sheep and goats,
44 36,000 cattle,
45 30,500 donkeys,
46 and 16,000 people.
47 Moses took one out of every 50, selected from the people and the livestock of the Israelites’ half. He gave them to the Levites who perform the duties of the Lord’s tabernacle, as the Lord had commanded him.
48 The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, approached Moses 49 and told him, “Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing. 50 So we have presented to the Lord an offering of the gold articles each man found—armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”(H)
51 Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them all the articles made out of gold. 52 All the gold of the contribution they offered to the Lord, from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, was 420 pounds.[d] 53 Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.

31 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: 2 «Toma completa venganza sobre los madianitas por los israelitas(A); después serás reunido a tu pueblo(B)». 3 Y Moisés habló al pueblo y le dijo: «Armen a algunos hombres de entre ustedes para la guerra, a fin de que suban contra Madián para ejecutar la venganza del Señor(C) en Madián. 4 Enviarán a la guerra 1,000 de cada tribu, de todas las tribus de Israel».
5 Entonces se prepararon de entre los miles de Israel 1,000 de cada tribu, 12,000 hombres armados para la guerra. 6 Y Moisés los envió a la guerra, 1,000 de cada tribu, y a Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, a la guerra con ellos, con los vasos sagrados(D) y las trompetas(E) en su mano para la alarma.
7 Los israelitas hicieron guerra contra Madián, tal como el Señor había ordenado a Moisés, y mataron a todos los varones(F). 8 Junto con sus muertos, mataron a los reyes de Madián: Evi, Requem, Zur, Hur y Reba(G), los cinco reyes de Madián. 13 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar, y todos los jefes de la congregación salieron a recibirlos fuera del campamento. 14 Moisés se enojó con los oficiales del ejército, los capitanes de miles y los capitanes de cientos, que volvían del servicio en la guerra, 15 y Moisés les dijo: «¿Han dejado con vida a todas las mujeres(J)? 16 Estas fueron la causa de que los israelitas, por el consejo de Balaam(K), fueran infieles al Señor en el asunto de Peor, por lo que hubo plaga entre la congregación del Señor(L). 17 Ahora pues, maten(M) a todo varón entre los niños, y maten a toda mujer que haya conocido varón acostándose con él. 18 Pero a todas las jóvenes que no hayan conocido varón acostándose con él, las dejarán con vida para ustedes. 19 Y ustedes, acampen fuera del campamento por siete días; todo el que haya matado a una persona y todo el que haya tocado a un muerto, purifíquense, ustedes y sus cautivos, al tercero y al séptimo día(N). 20 Y purificarán todo vestido, todo artículo de cuero y toda obra de pelo de cabra y todo objeto de madera».
21 Entonces el sacerdote Eleazar dijo a los hombres de guerra que habían ido a la batalla: «Este es el estatuto de la ley que el Señor ha ordenado a Moisés: 22 solo el oro, la plata, el bronce, el hierro, el estaño y el plomo, 23 todo lo que resiste el fuego, pasarán por el fuego y será limpio, pero será purificado con el agua para la impureza. Pero todo lo que no resiste el fuego lo pasarán por agua(O). 24 Y en el séptimo día lavarán su ropa y serán limpios; después podrán entrar al campamento».
25 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: 26 «Cuenta el botín que fue tomado tanto de hombres como de animales; tú con el sacerdote Eleazar, y los jefes de las casas paternas de la congregación, 27 y divide en mitades el botín entre los guerreros que salieron a la batalla y toda la congregación(P). 28 Y toma un tributo para el Señor de los hombres de guerra que salieron a la batalla, uno por cada 500 tanto de las personas como de los bueyes, de los asnos y de las ovejas; 29 tómalo de la mitad de ellos, y dáselo al sacerdote Eleazar, como ofrenda al Señor. 30 De la mitad de los israelitas tomarás uno de cada cincuenta, tanto de las personas como de los bueyes, de los asnos y de las ovejas, de cualquier animal, y los darás a los levitas(Q) que guardan el tabernáculo del Señor». 31 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron tal como el Señor había ordenado a Moisés.
32 Y el botín que quedó del despojo que los hombres de guerra habían tomado fue de 675,000 ovejas, 33 72,000 cabezas de ganado, 34 y 61,000 asnos; 35 y de los seres humanos, de las mujeres que no habían conocido varón acostándose con él, fueron en total 32,000. 36 Y la mitad, la porción para los que salieron a la guerra, fue de 337,500 ovejas el número; 37 el tributo al Señor fue de 675 ovejas; 38 y las cabezas de ganado, 36,000 de las cuales el tributo al Señor fue de 72; 39 y los asnos, 30,500 de los cuales el tributo al Señor fue de 61. 40 Y los seres humanos, 16,000 de los cuales el tributo al Señor fue de 32 personas. 41 Moisés dio el tributo, que era la ofrenda del Señor, al sacerdote Eleazar, tal como el Señor había ordenado a Moisés(R).

48 Entonces los oficiales que estaban sobre los miles del ejército, los capitanes de miles y los capitanes de cientos, se acercaron a Moisés; 49 y dijeron a Moisés: «Tus siervos han levantado un censo de los hombres de guerra que están a nuestro cargo, y no falta ninguno de nosotros. 50 Por tanto, hemos traído al Señor, como ofrenda, lo que cada hombre ha hallado: objetos de oro, pulseras, brazaletes, anillos, pendientes y collares, para hacer expiación por nosotros ante el Señor(S)».
51 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron de ellos el oro y toda clase de objetos labrados. 52 Y el total del oro de la ofrenda que ellos ofrecieron al Señor, de los capitanes de miles y de los capitanes de cientos, fue de 16,750 siclos (191 kilos). 53 Los hombres de guerra habían tomado botín(T), cada hombre tomó algo para sí mismo. 54 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de los capitanes de miles y de cientos, y lo llevaron a la tienda de reunión como memorial para los israelitas delante del Señor(U).

31 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
3 And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the Lord of Midian.
4 Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
5 So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.
7 And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.
8 And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
9 And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
10 And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
11 And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.
12 And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.
13 And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
14 And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
15 And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.
17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
19 And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
20 And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood.
21 And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses;
22 Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23 Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
24 And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.
25 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
26 Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
27 And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
28 And levy a tribute unto the Lord of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:
29 Take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an heave offering of the Lord.
30 And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.
31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
32 And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,
33 And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,
34 And threescore and one thousand asses,
35 And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
36 And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:
37 And the Lord'S tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.
38 And the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the Lord'S tribute was threescore and twelve.
39 And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the Lord'S tribute was threescore and one.
40 And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the Lord'S tribute was thirty and two persons.
41 And Moses gave the tribute, which was the Lord'S heave offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.
42 And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided from the men that warred,
43 (Now the half that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,
44 And thirty and six thousand beeves,
45 And thirty thousand asses and five hundred,
46 And sixteen thousand persons;)
47 Even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moses.
48 And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:
49 And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
50 We have therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the Lord.
51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.
52 And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the Lord, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 (For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)
54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation, for a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.
