Israel Worships Baal
25 While Israel was staying in the Acacia Grove,[a](A) the people began to prostitute themselves with the women of Moab. 2 The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods.(B) 3 So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor,(C) and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.(D) 4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute[b] them in broad daylight before the Lord so that his burning anger may turn away from Israel.”
5 So Moses told Israel’s judges, “Kill each of the men who aligned themselves with Baal of Peor.”
Phinehas Intervenes
6 An Israelite man came bringing a Midianite woman to his relatives in the sight of Moses and the whole Israelite community while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand, 8 followed the Israelite man into the tent,[c] and drove it through both the Israelite man and the woman—through her belly. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped, 9 but those who died in the plague numbered twenty-four thousand.(E)
10 The Lord spoke to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the Israelites because he was zealous among them with my zeal,[d](F) so that I did not destroy the Israelites in my zeal. 12 Therefore declare: I grant him my covenant of peace.(G) 13 It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his future descendants,(H) because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
14 The name of the slain Israelite man, who was struck dead with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.[e] 15 The name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal head of a family in Midian.
Vengeance against the Midianites
16 The Lord told Moses, 17 “Attack the Midianites and strike them dead. 18 For they attacked you with the treachery that they used against you in the Peor incident. They did the same in the case involving their sister Cozbi, daughter of the Midianite leader who was killed the day the plague came at Peor.”

Moab Seduces Israel
25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(A) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(B) with Moabite(C) women,(D) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices(E) to their gods.(F) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to(G) the Baal of Peor.(H) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.
4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(I) of these people, kill them and expose(J) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(K) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(L) may turn away from Israel.”
5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(M) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(N)
6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(O) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(P) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas(Q) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(R) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(S) 9 but those who died in the plague(T) numbered 24,000.(U)
10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(V) Since he was as zealous for my honor(W) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(X) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(Y) because he was zealous(Z) for the honor(AA) of his God and made atonement(AB) for the Israelites.”(AC)
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(AD) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(AE) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(AF) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(AG)
16 The Lord said to Moses,(AH) 17 “Treat the Midianites(AI) as enemies(AJ) and kill them.(AK) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(AL) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

25 Moraba Israel en Sitim; y el pueblo empezó a fornicar con las hijas de Moab, 2 las cuales invitaban al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses; y el pueblo comió, y se inclinó a sus dioses. 3 Así acudió el pueblo a Baal-peor; y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel. 4 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Toma a todos los príncipes del pueblo, y ahórcalos ante Jehová delante del sol, y el ardor de la ira de Jehová se apartará de Israel. 5 Entonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: Matad cada uno a aquellos de los vuestros que se han juntado con Baal-peor.
6 Y he aquí un varón de los hijos de Israel vino y trajo una madianita a sus hermanos, a ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, mientras lloraban ellos a la puerta del tabernáculo de reunión. 7 Y lo vio Finees hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, y se levantó de en medio de la congregación, y tomó una lanza en su mano; 8 y fue tras el varón de Israel a la tienda, y los alanceó a ambos, al varón de Israel, y a la mujer por su vientre. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel. 9 Y murieron de aquella mortandad veinticuatro mil.
10 Entonces Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo: 11 Finees hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha hecho apartar mi furor de los hijos de Israel, llevado de celo entre ellos; por lo cual yo no he consumido en mi celo a los hijos de Israel. 12 Por tanto diles: He aquí yo establezco mi pacto de paz con él; 13 y tendrá él, y su descendencia después de él, el pacto del sacerdocio perpetuo, por cuanto tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los hijos de Israel.
14 Y el nombre del varón que fue muerto con la madianita era Zimri hijo de Salu, jefe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón. 15 Y el nombre de la mujer madianita muerta era Cozbi hija de Zur, príncipe de pueblos, padre de familia en Madián.
16 Y Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo: 17 Hostigad a los madianitas, y heridlos, 18 por cuanto ellos os afligieron a vosotros con sus ardides con que os han engañado en lo tocante a Baal-peor, y en lo tocante a Cozbi hija del príncipe de Madián, su hermana, la cual fue muerta el día de la mortandad por causa de Baal-peor.
