24 Balaam saw that the Lord wanted to bless Israel. So Balaam did not try to use any magic. He looked toward the desert. 2 Balaam saw the Israelites camped in their tribes. Then the Spirit of God entered him. 3 And Balaam gave this message:
“This is the message of Balaam son of Beor.
This is the message of a man who sees clearly.
4 This is the message of a man who heard the words of God.
I see a vision from the All-Powerful One.
My eyes are open as I fall before him.
5 Your tents are beautiful, people of Jacob!
So are your homes, Israel!
6 Your tents spread out like valleys.
They are like gardens beside a river.
They are like spices planted by the Lord.
They are like cedar trees growing by the water.
7 Israel’s water buckets will always be full.
Their crops will have plenty of water.
Their king will be greater than Agag.
Their kingdom will be very great.
8 God brought them out of Egypt.
They are as strong as a wild ox.
They will defeat their enemies.
They will break their enemies’ bones.
They will shoot them with arrows.
9 Like a lion, they lie waiting to attack.
No one would wake a sleeping lion.
Anyone who blesses you will be blessed.
And anyone who curses you will be cursed.”
10 Then Balak was angry with Balaam. Balak pounded his fist. He said to Balaam, “I called you here to curse my enemies. But you have blessed them three times. 11 Now go home! I said I would pay you well. But the Lord has made you lose your reward.”
12 Balaam said to Balak, “You sent messengers to me. I told them, 13 ‘Balak could give me his palace filled with silver and gold. But I still cannot go against the Lord’s commands. I could not do anything, good or bad, on my own. I must say what the Lord says.’ 14 Now I am going back to my own people. But I will tell you what these people will do to your people in the future.”
Balaam’s Final Message
15 Then Balaam gave this message:
“This is the message of Balaam son of Beor.
This is the message of a man who sees clearly.
16 This is the message of a man who hears the words of God.
I know the Most High God.
I see a vision from the All-Powerful One.
My eyes are open as I fall before him.
17 I see someone who will come some day.
I see someone who will come, but not soon.
A star will come from Jacob.
A ruler will rise from Israel.
He will crush the heads of the Moabites.
He will smash the skulls of the sons of Sheth.
18 Edom will be conquered.
His enemy Edom will be conquered.
But Israel will grow wealthy.
19 The descendants of Jacob will beat them down.
The Israelites will destroy those left in the city.”
20 Then Balaam saw Amalek and gave this message:
“Amalek was the most important nation.
But Amalek will be destroyed at last.”
21 Then Balaam saw the Kenites and gave this message:
“Your home is safe.
It is like a nest on a cliff.
22 But you Kenites will be burned up.
Assyria will keep you captive.”
23 Then Balaam gave this message:
“No one can live when God does this.
24 Ships will sail from the shores of Cyprus.
They will defeat Assyria and Eber.
But they will also be destroyed.”
25 Then Balaam got up and returned home. Balak also went on his way.

24 (A) När Bileam såg att det behagade Herren att välsigna Israel, gick han inte som förut bort och såg efter spåtecken[a], utan vände sig mot öknen. 2 Och när Bileam höjde blicken, såg han Israel i sina läger efter sina stammar. Och Guds Ande kom över honom. 3 Då framförde han detta budskap:
”Så säger Bileam, Beors son,
så säger mannen
med det slutna ögat[b],
4 så säger han som hör Guds ord,
han som skådar syner
från den Allsmäktige,
han som faller ner
och får sina ögon öppnade.
5 Hur sköna är inte dina tält, o Jakob,
dina boningar, o Israel!
6 Likt dalar utbreder de sig,
likt trädgårdar vid en ström,
likt aloeträd[c] planterade
av Herren,
likt cedrar vid vatten.
7 (B) Vatten flödar ur hans ämbar,
hans sådd blir rikligen vattnad.
Större än Agag[d]
ska hans kung vara,
upphöjt är hans kungadöme.
8 (C) Gud förde honom ut ur Egypten.
Hans styrka är som vildoxens.
Han ska sluka hednafolken,
hans fiender.
Han ska krossa deras ben,
med sina pilar genomborra dem.
9 (D) Han har lagt sig ner,
han vilar som ett lejon,
som en lejonhona,
vem vågar oroa honom?
Välsignad är den
som välsignar dig,
förbannad är den
som förbannar dig!”
10 Då upptändes Balaks vrede mot Bileam, och han slog ihop händerna. Han sade till Bileam: ”Jag kallade hit dig för att förbanna mina fiender, men se, du har välsignat dem rikligt tre gånger. 11 Ge dig nu av hem igen! Jag sade att jag skulle visa dig stor ära, men se, Herren har hindrat att du skulle bli ärad.” 12 Bileam svarade Balak: ”Sade jag inte till sändebuden som du skickade till mig: 13 (E) Även om Balak skulle ge mig så mycket silver och guld som ryms i hans palats, kan jag ändå inte överträda Herrens befallning av egen vilja i vare sig gott eller ont. Vad Herren säger, det måste jag tala.
Bileams fjärde profetia
14 Se, jag går nu hem till mitt folk. Kom, jag vill varna dig för vad detta folk kommer att göra mot ditt folk i kommande dagar.” 15 Och han framförde detta budskap:
”Så säger Bileam, Beors son,
så säger mannen
med det slutna ögat,
16 så säger han som hör Guds ord
och har kunskap från den Högste.
Han ser syner
från den Allsmäktige
när han faller ner
och får sina ögon öppnade.
17 (F) Jag ser honom, men inte nu,
jag skådar honom,
men inte nära.
En stjärna stiger fram[e] ur Jakob,
en spira höjer sig ur Israel.
Den krossar Moabs tinningar
och slår ner alla söner till Set.
18 (G) Han ska få till besittning
Edom och Seir, sina fiender.
Och Israel ska göra mäktiga ting.
19 Ur Jakob ska en härskare komma,
och de överlevande
ska han utrota ur staden.”
20 (H) Han fick se Amalek. Då framförde han detta budskap:
”Den förste bland hednafolken
är Amalek,
men slutet för honom
blir undergång.”
21 Han fick se keniterna[f]. Då framförde han detta budskap:
”Säker är din boning,
lagt på klippan är ditt näste.
22 Likväl ska Kain skövlas[g]
när Assur för dig bort
i fångenskap.”
23 Och han framförde detta budskap:
”O, vem kan bli vid liv
när Gud låter detta ske?
24 Skepp ska komma
från kitteernas kust,[h]
de ska kuva Assur och kuva Eber.
Men också de ska drabbas
av undergång.”
25 Sedan stod Bileam upp och vände tillbaka hem. Också Balak for sin väg.

24 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel,(A) he did not resort to divination(B) as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.(C) 2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him(D) 3 and he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,(E)
4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,(F)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,[a](G)
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
5 “How beautiful are your tents,(H) Jacob,
your dwelling places, Israel!
6 “Like valleys they spread out,
like gardens beside a river,(I)
like aloes(J) planted by the Lord,
like cedars beside the waters.(K)
7 Water will flow from their buckets;
their seed will have abundant water.
8 “God brought them out of Egypt;
they have the strength of a wild ox.
They devour hostile nations
and break their bones in pieces;(N)
with their arrows they pierce them.(O)
9 Like a lion they crouch and lie down,
like a lioness(P)—who dares to rouse them?
10 Then Balak’s anger burned(S) against Balaam. He struck his hands together(T) and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,(U) but you have blessed them(V) these three times.(W) 11 Now leave at once and go home!(X) I said I would reward you handsomely,(Y) but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”
12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,(Z) 13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord(AA)—and I must say only what the Lord says’?(AB) 14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”(AC)
Balaam’s Fourth Message
15 Then he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16 the prophecy of one who hears the words(AD) of God,
who has knowledge from the Most High,(AE)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
17 “I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near.(AF)
A star will come out of Jacob;(AG)
a scepter will rise out of Israel.(AH)
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,(AI)
the skulls[b](AJ) of[c] all the people of Sheth.[d]
18 Edom(AK) will be conquered;
Seir,(AL) his enemy, will be conquered,(AM)
but Israel(AN) will grow strong.
19 A ruler will come out of Jacob(AO)
and destroy the survivors of the city.”
Balaam’s Fifth Message
20 Then Balaam saw Amalek(AP) and spoke his message:
“Amalek was first among the nations,
but their end will be utter destruction.”(AQ)
Balaam’s Sixth Message
21 Then he saw the Kenites(AR) and spoke his message:
“Your dwelling place is secure,(AS)
your nest is set in a rock;
22 yet you Kenites will be destroyed
when Ashur(AT) takes you captive.”
Balaam’s Seventh Message
23 Then he spoke his message:
“Alas! Who can live when God does this?[e]
24 Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;(AU)
they will subdue Ashur(AV) and Eber,(AW)
but they too will come to ruin.(AX)”
25 Then Balaam(AY) got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
