Balak Sends for Balaam
22 (A)Then the sons of Israel journeyed on, and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan opposite Jericho.
2 Now (B)Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 (C)So Moab was in great fear because of the people, for they were numerous; and Moab was in dread of the sons of Israel. 4 Moab said to the elders of (D)Midian, “Now this [a]horde will eat up all that is around us, as the ox eats up the grass of the field!” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. 5 So he sent messengers to (E)Balaam the son of Beor, at (F)Pethor, which is near the Euphrates River, in the land of the sons of his people, to call for him, saying, “Behold, a people came out of Egypt; behold, they have covered the surface of the land, and they are living opposite me. 6 (G)Now, therefore, please come, (H)curse this people for me since they are too [b]mighty for me; perhaps I will be able to [c]defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian left with the fees for (I)divination in their hands; and they came to Balaam and [d]repeated Balak’s words to him. 8 And he said to them, “Spend the night here, and I will bring word back to you just as the Lord may speak to me.” And the leaders of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 Then (J)God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” 10 Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent word to me: 11 ‘Behold, there is a people who came out of Egypt, and they cover the surface of the land; now come, curse them for me; perhaps I will be able to fight against them and drive them out.’” 12 But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them; (K)you shall not curse the people, for they (L)are blessed.” 13 So Balaam got up in the morning and said to Balak’s representatives, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.” 14 And the representatives from Moab got up and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”
15 Then Balak sent representatives once again, more numerous and more distinguished than [e]the previous. 16 They came to Balaam and said to him, “This is what Balak the son of Zippor says: ‘I beg you, let nothing keep you from coming to me; 17 for I will indeed honor you richly, and I will do whatever you tell me. (M)Please come then, curse this people for me.’” 18 But Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “(N)Even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do anything, either small or great, contrary to the [f]command of the Lord my God. 19 Now please, you also stay here tonight, and I will find out what else the Lord will say to me.” 20 And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise and go with them; but you shall do (O)only the thing that I tell you.”
21 (P)So Balaam arose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the leaders of Moab.
The Angel and Balaam
22 But God was angry that he was going, (Q)and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the road as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, the donkey turned off from the road and went into the field; and Balaam struck the donkey to guide her back onto the road. 24 Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path of the vineyards, with a stone wall on this side and on that side. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she pressed herself against the wall and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall, so he struck her again. 26 Then the angel of the Lord went farther, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so (R)Balaam was angry and struck the donkey with his staff. 28 Then (S)the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” 29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “It is because you have made a mockery of me! If only there had been a sword in my hand! For (T)I would have killed you by now!” 30 But the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever been in the habit of doing such a thing to you?” And he said, “No.”
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw (U)the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed [g]all the way to the ground. 32 Then the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way was (V)reckless and contrary to me. 33 But the donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away from me, I certainly would have killed you just now, and let her live.” 34 So Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “(W)I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing in the way against me. Now then, if it is displeasing to you, I will turn back.” 35 But the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but (X)you shall speak only the word that I [h]tell you.” So Balaam went along with the representatives of Balak.
36 When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, which is on the Arnon border, [i]at the extreme end of the border. 37 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not urgently send word to you to call for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I really unable to honor you?” 38 So Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you now! (Y)Am I really able to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that only shall I speak.” 39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth. 40 Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent some to Balaam and the leaders who were with him.
41 Then it came about in the morning that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to [j](Z)the high places of Baal, and he saw from there [k]a (AA)portion of the people.

Balac manda llamar a Balaam
22 Los hijos de Israel partieron de allí, y acamparon en los campos de Moab, frente a Jericó, a orillas del río Jordán. 2 Y cuando Balac hijo de Sipor se dio cuenta de todo lo que Israel había hecho con los amorreos, 3 él y todos los moabitas tuvieron mucho miedo del pueblo de Israel, pues eran una gran multitud. Fue tanta la angustia de los moabitas 4 que les dijeron a los ancianos de Madián:
«Esta gente va a acabar con todos nuestros contornos, del mismo modo que el buey acaba con la grama del campo.»
Balac hijo de Sipor era entonces el rey de Moab, 5 así que mandó llamar a Balaam hijo de Beor, que estaba en Petor, junto al río, en el territorio de los hijos de su pueblo. Los mensajeros le dijeron:
«De Egipto ha salido un pueblo que cubre la faz de la tierra, y que ha venido a plantarse delante de mí. 6 Yo sé que a quien tú bendices, es bendecido, y que a quien tú maldices es maldecido. Por eso, te ruego que vengas y lo maldigas por mí, porque es un pueblo más fuerte que yo. ¡Tal vez logre yo herirlo y echarlo fuera de mi tierra!»
7 Los ancianos de Moab y de Madián fueron a ver a Balaam. Con los regalos de adivinación en la mano, le dieron el mensaje que le enviaba Balac. 8 Y Balaam les dijo:
«Descansen aquí esta noche, que yo les daré la respuesta que el Señor me comunique.»
Y los príncipes de Moab se quedaron con Balaam. 9 Pero Dios vino y le dijo a Balaam:
«¿Quiénes son estos hombres que están contigo?»
10 Balaam le respondió a Dios:
«Balac hijo de Sipor, que es rey de Moab, mandó a decirme: 11 “De Egipto ha salido un pueblo que cubre la faz de la tierra. Yo te ruego que vengas y lo maldigas por mí. ¡Tal vez logre yo herirlo y echarlo fuera!”»
12 Entonces Dios le dijo a Balaam:
«No vayas con ellos, ni maldigas a ese pueblo, porque es un pueblo bendito.»
13 Y así, al día siguiente Balaam se levantó y les dijo a los príncipes de Balac:
«Vuelvan a su tierra. El Señor no me permite ir con ustedes.»
14 Los príncipes de Moab se levantaron y fueron a decirle a Balac:
«Balaam no quiso venir con nosotros.»
15 Una vez más, Balac envió a otros príncipes, más importantes todavía que los anteriores, 16 y éstos le dijeron a Balaam:
«Así dice Balac, hijo de Sipor: “Te ruego que no dejes de venir a mí. 17 Puedes estar seguro de que yo te colmaré de riquezas, y haré todo lo que me digas. Por favor, ven y maldice por mí a este pueblo.”»
18 Pero Balaam les respondió a los siervos de Balac:
«Aun cuando Balac me dé su casa llena de oro y plata, yo no puedo desobedecer en lo más mínimo las órdenes del Señor. 19 Yo les ruego que descansen aquí esta noche, hasta que yo sepa qué más me dice el Señor.»
20 Durante la noche, Dios vino y le dijo a Balaam:
«Puesto que estos hombres han acudido a ti, levántate y vete con ellos. Pero harás sólo lo que yo te diga.»
El ángel y el asna de Balaam
21 Al día siguiente, Balaam se levantó, le puso a su asna el aparejo, y se fue con los príncipes de Moab. 22 Balaam iba montado sobre su asna, y acompañado de dos criados suyos, pero en el camino la ira de Dios se encendió y su ángel salió dispuesto a obstruirle el paso. 23 Cuando el asna vio que el ángel del Señor estaba en el camino, y que en la mano tenía desenvainada la espada, se apartó del camino y se fue por el campo. Balaam azotó al asna para hacerla volver al camino, 24 pero el ángel del Señor se puso en un sendero de viñas, que de uno y otro lado tenía un cerco de piedras. 25 En cuanto el asna vio al ángel del Señor, se arrimó contra el cerco de piedras y apretó contra la pared el pie de Balaam, por lo que él volvió a azotarla. 26 Entonces el ángel del Señor avanzó un poco más y se puso en un lugar más angosto, donde ya no había manera de avanzar ni a un lado ni al otro. 27 Al ver el asna al ángel del Señor, se echó al suelo debajo de Balaam, y éste se enojó y la azotó con un palo. 28 Entonces el Señor hizo que el asna hablara, y ésta le dijo a Balaam:
«¿Y yo qué te he hecho? ¿Por qué me has azotado tres veces?»
29 Y Balaam le respondió:
«¡Es que te has burlado de mí! Si tuviera yo una espada en la mano, ¡ahora mismo te mataría!»
30 El asna le contestó:
«Pero, Balaam, ¿acaso no soy yo tu asna? Desde que me tienes, y hasta este día, tú has montado sobre mí. ¿Acaso te he tratado así alguna vez?»
Como Balaam respondió que no, 31 el Señor le abrió los ojos, y al ver Balaam que el ángel del Señor estaba en el camino y con la espada en la mano, se inclinó y se postró sobre su rostro. 32 Entonces el ángel del Señor le dijo:
«¿Por qué azotaste a tu asna tres veces? Como puedes ver, yo he salido dispuesto a no dejarte seguir, porque tu camino me parece perverso. 33 En cuanto el asna me vio, tres veces se apartó de mí. Si ella no se hubiera apartado de mí, yo te habría matado a ti, y a ella la habría dejado con vida.»
34 Entonces Balaam dijo al ángel del Señor:
«He pecado. Y es que no sabía que tú te interponías en mi camino. Pero ya que esto te parece mal, voy a regresarme.»
35 Pero el ángel del Señor le dijo:
«Puedes ir con esos hombres. Pero sólo dirás lo que yo te ordene que digas.»
Y así, Balaam se fue con los príncipes de Balac. 36 Y cuando Balac supo que Balaam venía, salió a recibirlo a la ciudad de Moab, la cual está en los límites de Arnón, es decir, en los extremos de su territorio. 37 Allí, Balac le dijo a Balaam:
«¿Acaso no mandé a llamarte? ¿Por qué no acudiste a mi llamado? ¿Crees que no puedo darte muchas riquezas?»
38 Balaam le respondió:
«Pues ya estoy aquí. Pero no puedo decir nada que Dios no me ordene decir.»
39 Y Balaam se fue con Balac, y se dirigieron a Quiriat Jusot. 40 Allí Balac ordenó sacrificar bueyes y ovejas, y los envió a Balaam y a los príncipes que estaban con él.
Balaam bendice a Israel
41 Al día siguiente, Balac llevó a Balaam hasta la cima de Bamot Baal, y desde allí Balaam vio la parte más extrema del pueblo.
