Arad Conquered
21 When the Canaanite, the king of (A)Arad, who lived in the [a]Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. 2 So (B)Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed hand over this people to me, then I will [b]utterly destroy their cities.” 3 The Lord heard the voice of Israel and turned over the Canaanites; then they [c]utterly destroyed them and their cities. And the place was named [d](C)Hormah.
4 Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the [e]Red Sea, to (D)go around the land of Edom; and the [f]people became impatient because of the journey. 5 So the people spoke against God and Moses: “(E)Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no [g]food and no water, and [h](F)we are disgusted with [i]this miserable food.”
The Bronze Serpent
6 (G)Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and (H)they bit the people, so that (I)many people of Israel died. 7 (J)So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you; (K)intercede with the Lord, that He will remove the serpents from us.” And Moses interceded for the people. 8 Then the Lord said to Moses, “[j]Make a (L)fiery serpent, and put it on a flag pole; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, and looks at it, will live.” 9 So Moses made a (M)bronze serpent and put it on the flag pole; and it came about, that if a serpent bit someone, and he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
10 (N)Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth. 11 Then they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the [k]east. 12 (O)From there they set out and camped in [l]Wadi Zered. 13 From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites; (P)for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 For that reason it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord,
“Waheb in Suphah,
And the [m]wadis of the Arnon,
15 And the slope of the wadis
That extends to the site of (Q)Ar,
And leans to the border of Moab.”
16 (R)From there they continued to [n]Beer, that is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”
17 (S)Then Israel sang this song:
“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
18 The well, which the leaders dug,
Which the nobles of the people hollowed out,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”
And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the [o]desert.
Two Victories
21 (T)Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 “(U)Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s road until we have passed through your border.” 23 (V)But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. Instead, Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to (W)Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then (X)Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the (Y)border of the sons of Ammon was [p]Jazer. 25 Israel took all these cities, and (Z)Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all her [q]villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 For that reason those who use proverbs say,
“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
28 (AA)For a fire spread from Heshbon,
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured (AB)Ar of Moab,
The [r](AC)dominant [s]heights of the Arnon.
29 (AD)Woe to you, Moab!
You are destroyed, people of (AE)Chemosh!
(AF)He has given his sons as fugitives,
(AG)And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.
30 But we have shot them down with arrows,
Heshbon is destroyed as far as (AH)Dibon,
Then we have laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”
31 So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 Now Moses sent men to spy out (AI)Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.
33 (AJ)Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out against them [t]with all his people, for battle at (AK)Edrei. 34 But the Lord said to Moses, “(AL)Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.” 35 So (AM)they [u]killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no survivor left; and they took possession of his land.

El rey de Arad ataca a Israel
21 El rey cananeo de Arad habitaba en el Néguev, y cuando oyó que Israel(A) venía por el camino de Atarín, salió a pelear contra ellos, y a algunos los hizo prisioneros. 2 Entonces Israel hizo un voto al Señor, y dijo:
«Si tú pones este pueblo en mis manos, yo destruiré sus ciudades.»
3 El Señor escuchó la petición de Israel, y le entregó a los cananeos. Israel destruyó entonces a los cananeos y a sus ciudades, y a ese lugar lo llamó Jormá.[a]
La serpiente de bronce
4 Después los israelitas partieron del monte Hor, en dirección al Mar Rojo, para rodear la tierra de Edom,(B) y en el camino el pueblo se desanimó 5 y murmuró contra Dios y contra Moisés:
«¿Para qué nos hiciste salir de Egipto? ¿Para hacernos morir en este desierto? ¡No hay pan ni agua, y ya estamos hartos de este pan tan liviano!»
6 Entonces el Señor mandó serpientes venenosas entre el pueblo, para que los mordieran, y muchos del pueblo de Israel murieron.
7 El pueblo fue a ver a Moisés, y le dijo:
«Hemos pecado al murmurar contra el Señor y contra ti. ¡Ruégale al Señor que nos quite estas serpientes!»
Y Moisés oró por el pueblo, 8 y el Señor le dijo a Moisés:
«Haz una serpiente como éstas, y ponla en un asta. Todo el que sea mordido y la mire, vivirá.»
9 Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce, y la puso sobre un asta;(C) y cuando alguna serpiente mordía a alguien, si miraba a la serpiente de bronce, seguía con vida.
Los israelitas rodean la tierra de Moab
10 Los hijos de Israel partieron de allí y acamparon en Obot. 11 Al partir de Obot, acamparon en Iyé Abarín, en el desierto que está enfrente de Moab, por donde sale el sol. 12 Al partir de allí, acamparon en el valle de Zered. 13 Al partir de allí, acamparon al otro lado del río Arnón, que está en el desierto y que va más allá del territorio del amorreo. Este río Arnón es el límite entre los moabitas y los amorreos. 14 Por eso en el libro de las batallas del Señor puede leerse:
«... lo que hizo en el Mar Rojo
y en los arroyos de Arnón,
15 y en la corriente de los arroyos
que va a parar en Ar
y se detiene en los límites de Moab.»
16 De allí siguieron hasta Ber,[b] es decir, el pozo donde el Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Reúne al pueblo, que voy a darles agua.»
17 Israel entonó allí este cántico:
«¡Canta, pozo! ¡Deja fluir el agua!
18 Los grandes señores cavaron este pozo;
¡con sus cetros lo cavaron
los nobles y los príncipes del pueblo!»
Del desierto se dirigieron a Matana, 19 de Matana a Najaliel, de Najaliel a Bamot, 20 y de Bamot al valle que está en los campos de Moab, y a la cumbre del Pisga, que mira hacia el desierto.
Israel derrota a Sijón(D)
21 Israel envió embajadores a Sijón, el rey de los amorreos, para decirle:
22 «Voy a pasar por tu tierra. No iremos por los sembrados ni por las viñas, ni beberemos agua de tus pozos. Iremos por el camino principal, hasta salir de tu territorio.»
23 Pero Sijón no permitió que Israel pasara por su territorio, sino que juntó a todo su ejército y salió al desierto para pelear contra Israel. Al llegar a Yahás, 24 Israel hirió a Sijón a filo de espada y se posesionó de su tierra, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y hasta los hijos de Amón, porque la frontera de los hijos de Amón era fuerte. 25 Israel se apoderó de todas estas ciudades, y habitó en todas las ciudades de los amorreos, y en Jesbón y todas sus aldeas. 26 Jesbón era la ciudad de Sijón, el rey de los amorreos que antes había tenido guerra con el rey de Moab, y se había apoderado de toda su tierra, hasta Arnón. 27 Por eso dicen los proverbistas:
«¡Vengan todos a Jesbón!
¡Que vuelva a levantarse la ciudad de Sijón!
28 Porque de Jesbón salió fuego;
de la ciudad de Sijón salieron llamas
que consumieron las ciudades de Moab
y las señoriales alturas de Arnón.
29 »¡Ay de ti, Moab!
¡Quedaste destruido, pueblo de Quemos!
Tus hijos fueron puestos en fuga,
y tus hijas fueron hechas cautivas
del rey Sijón de los amorreos.
30 »¡Pero nosotros devastamos su reino!
Jesbón quedó en ruinas hasta Dibón,
pues la destruimos hasta Nofa y Medeba.»
Israel derrota a Og de Basán(E)
31 Fue así como Israel llegó a habitar la tierra de los amorreos. 32 Además, Moisés mandó exploradores a Jazer, y se apoderaron de sus aldeas y desalojaron a los amorreos. 33 Cuando volvieron, lo hicieron por el camino de Basán; pero Og, el rey de Basán, salió con todo su ejército a combatirlos, y pelearon en Edrey. 34 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Moisés:
«No le tengas miedo, porque a él y a todo su pueblo yo los pondré en tus manos, lo mismo que a su tierra, y harás con él lo mismo que hiciste con Sijón, el rey amorreo que habitaba en Jesbón.»
35 Y los israelitas hirieron de muerte a Sijón y a sus hijos, y a todo su ejército. No dejaron con vida a nadie. Así se apoderaron de su tierra.
