Numbers 14-15

The People Rebel
14 Then all the congregation [a]raised their voices and cried out, and the people wept [b]that night. 2 And all the sons of Israel (A)grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the entire congregation said to them, “(B)If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or even if we had died in this wilderness! 3 So why is the Lord bringing us into this land (C)to fall by the sword? (D)Our wives and our little ones will become plunder! Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, “(E)Let’s appoint a leader and return to Egypt!”
5 (F)Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in the presence of all the assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel. 6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; 7 and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “(G)The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. 8 (H)If the Lord is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us—(I)a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only (J)do not rebel against the Lord; and do not (K)fear the people of the land, for they will be our [c]prey. Their [d]protection is gone from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 (L)But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then (M)the glory of the Lord appeared in the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel.
Moses Pleads for the People
11 (N)And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people be disrespectful to Me? And how long will (O)they not [e]believe in Me, despite all the signs that I have performed in their midst? 12 I will strike them with [f](P)plague and dispossess them, and I (Q)will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they.”
13 (R)But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought this people up from their midst, 14 and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, Lord, are in the midst of this people, because (S)You, Lord, are seen eye to eye, while Your cloud stands over them; and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if You put this people to death [g]all at once, (T)then the nations who have heard of Your fame will [h]say, 16 ‘Since the Lord (U)could not bring this people into the land which He promised them by oath, He slaughtered them in the wilderness.’ 17 So now, please, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, saying, 18 ‘(V)The Lord is slow to anger and abundant in mercy, forgiving wrongdoing and violation of His Law; but (W)He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, (X)inflicting the [i]punishment of the fathers on the children [j]to the third and the fourth generations.’ 19 Please (Y)forgive the guilt of this people in accordance with the greatness of Your mercy, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
The Lord Pardons and Rebukes
20 So the Lord said, “(Z)I have forgiven them in accordance with your word; 21 however, (AA)as I live, [k](AB)all the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord. 22 Certainly (AC)all the people who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet (AD)have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, 23 (AE)shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who were disrespectful to Me see it. 24 But as for My servant Caleb, (AF)because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, (AG)I will bring him into the land which he [l]entered, and his [m]descendants shall take possession of it. 25 (AH)Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way of the [n]Red Sea.”
26 The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron again, saying, 27 “How long shall I put up with this evil congregation who are (AI)grumbling against Me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel which they are [o]voicing against Me. 28 Say to them, ‘(AJ)As I live,’ declares the Lord, ‘just as (AK)you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you; 29 (AL)your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness, all (AM)your [p]numbered men according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me. 30 By no means will you come into the land where I [q]swore to settle you, (AN)except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 (AO)Your children, however, whom you said would become plunder—I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected. 32 (AP)But as for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness. 33 Also, your sons will be shepherds in the wilderness for (AQ)forty years, and they will [r]suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your bodies perish in the wilderness. 34 In accordance with the (AR)number of days that you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall suffer the punishment for your [s]guilt a year, that is, forty years, and you will know My opposition. 35 (AS)I, the Lord, have spoken, I certainly will do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. They shall be worn out in this wilderness, and there they shall die.’”
36 (AT)As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who returned and led all the congregation to grumble against him by bringing a bad report about the land, 37 (AU)those men who brought the bad report of the land also died by a (AV)plague in the presence of the Lord. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.
Israel Repulsed
39 Now when Moses spoke (AW)these words to all the sons of Israel, (AX)the people mourned greatly. 40 In the morning, however, they got up early and went up to the [t]ridge of the hill country, saying, “(AY)Here we are; and we will go up to the place which the Lord has [u]promised, for [v]we have sinned.” 41 But Moses said, “(AZ)Why then are you (BA)violating the [w]command of the Lord, when doing so will not succeed? 42 (BB)Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you, [x]to prevent you from being defeated [y]by your enemies. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there [z]to confront you, and you will fall by the sword, since you have turned back from following the Lord. And the Lord will not be with you.” 44 But they foolishly dared to go up to the [aa]ridge of the hill country; neither (BC)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses left the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, and struck them and scattered them as far as (BD)Hormah.
Laws for Canaan
15 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “(BE)Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land [ab]where you are going to live, which I am giving you, 3 and you make (BF)an offering by fire to the Lord, a burnt offering or a sacrifice to [ac](BG)fulfill a special vow, or as a [ad]voluntary offering or at your (BH)appointed times, to make a (BI)soothing aroma to the Lord from the herd or from the flock, 4 then (BJ)the one who presents his offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering of a tenth of an [ae]ephah of fine flour mixed with a fourth of a [af]hin of oil, 5 and you shall prepare wine for the drink offering, a fourth of a hin, with the burnt offering or for the sacrifice, for (BK)each lamb. 6 Or for a ram you shall prepare as a grain offering two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil; 7 and for the drink offering you shall offer a third of a hin of wine as a soothing aroma to the Lord. 8 And when you prepare (BL)a bull as a burnt offering or a sacrifice, to [ag]fulfill a special vow, or for peace offerings to the Lord, 9 then you shall offer with the bull a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with half a hin of oil; 10 and you shall offer as the drink offering half a hin of wine as an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to the Lord.
11 ‘This is how it shall be done for each ox, or for each ram, or for each of the male lambs, or of the goats. 12 According to the number that you prepare, so you shall do for each one according to their number. 13 Everyone who is a native shall do these things in this way, in presenting an offering by fire as a soothing aroma to the Lord.
Law for the Stranger
14 Now if a stranger resides among you, or one who may be among you throughout your generations, and he wants to make an offering by fire, as a soothing aroma to the Lord, just as you do so shall he do. 15 As for the assembly, there shall be (BM)one statute for you and for the stranger who resides among you, a permanent statute throughout your generations; as you are, so shall the stranger be before the Lord. 16 There is to be (BN)one law and one ordinance for you and for the stranger who resides with you.’”
17 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 18 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land where I am bringing you, 19 then it shall be, that when you eat from the [ah](BO)food of the land, you shall lift up an [ai]offering to the Lord. 20 (BP)Of the first of your [aj]dough you shall lift up a loaf as an [ak]offering; as (BQ)an [al]offering of the threshing floor, so you shall lift it up. 21 From the first of your [am]dough you shall give to the Lord an [an]offering throughout your generations.
22 ‘But when you (BR)unintentionally do wrong and fail to [ao]comply with all these commandments which the Lord has spoken to Moses, 23 that is, all that the Lord has commanded you [ap]through Moses from the day that the Lord gave commandments and onward, throughout your generations, 24 then it shall be, if it is done (BS)unintentionally, [aq]without the knowledge of the congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one bull as a burnt offering, as a soothing aroma to the Lord, (BT)with its grain offering and its drink offering, according to the ordinance, and one male goat as a sin offering. 25 Then (BU)the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and they will be forgiven; for it was an unintentional wrong, and they have brought their offering, an offering by fire to the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord, for their unintentional wrong. 26 So all the congregation of the sons of Israel will be forgiven, as well as the stranger who resides among them, for guilt was attributed to all the people through an (BV)unintentional wrong.
27 ‘Also, if one person sins (BW)unintentionally, then he shall offer a one-year-old female goat as a sin offering. 28 And (BX)the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who goes astray by an unintentional sin, making atonement for him [ar]so that he may be forgiven. 29 You shall have one law for the native among the sons of Israel and for the stranger who resides among them, for one who does anything wrong unintentionally. 30 But the person who does wrong [as](BY)defiantly, whether he is a native or a stranger, that one is blaspheming the Lord; and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Since he has (BZ)despised the word of the Lord and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; (CA)his [at]guilt will be on him.’”
Sabbath-breaking Punished
32 Now while the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man (CB)gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation; 34 and they placed him in custody, (CC)because it had not been decided what should be done to him. 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must be put to death; (CD)all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him [au]to death with stones, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
37 The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying, 38 “Speak to the sons of Israel and tell them that they shall make for themselves (CE)tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a [av]violet thread. 39 It shall be a tassel for you [aw]to look at and (CF)remember all the commandments of the Lord, so that you will do them and not [ax]follow your own heart and your own eyes, [ay]which led you to prostitute yourselves, 40 so that you will remember and do all My commandments and (CG)be holy to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the Lord your God.”

Folket gör uppror
14 Då började hela menigheten ropa och skrika, och folket grät den natten. 2 Alla Israels barn knotade mot Mose och Aron, och hela menigheten sade till dem: "Om vi ändå hade fått dö i Egyptens land, eller om vi ändå hade fått dö här i öknen! 3 Varför leder Herren oss in i detta land, där vi måste falla för svärd och där våra hustrur och barn skall bli fiendens byte? Vore det inte bättre för oss att vända tillbaka till Egypten?" 4 Och de sade till varandra: "Vi väljer en anförare och vänder tillbaka till Egypten."
5 Då föll Mose och Aron ner på sina ansikten inför hela den samlade menigheten av Israels barn. 6 Och Josua, Nuns son, och Kaleb, Jefunnes son, som var med bland dem som hade bespejat landet, rev sönder sina kläder 7 och sade till hela Israels menighet: "Det land som vi har vandrat igenom och bespejat är ett mycket, mycket gott land. 8 Om Herren har behag till oss, skall han föra oss in i det landet och ge det åt oss, ett land som flödar av mjölk och honung. 9 Men var inte upproriska mot Herren och frukta inte för folket i landet, för de skall bli som en munsbit för oss. Deras beskydd har vikit ifrån dem, men Herren är med oss. Frukta inte för dem."
10 Men hela menigheten ropade att man skulle stena dem. Då visade sig Herrens härlighet i uppenbarelsetältet för alla Israels barn. 11 Och Herren sade till Mose: "Hur länge skall detta folk förakta mig? Och hur länge skall de vägra tro på mig trots alla de tecken jag har gjort ibland dem? 12 Jag skall slå dem med pest och utrota dem, men dig vill jag göra till ett folk som är större och mäktigare än detta."
Mose medlar för folket
13 Mose sade till Herren: "Egyptierna har ju hört att du med din kraft har fört detta folk ut från dem hit upp, 14 och de har talat om det för dem som bor här i landet. De har hört att du, Herre, är mitt ibland detta folk, att du, Herre, visar dig ansikte mot ansikte, att din molnsky står över dem och att du går framför dem i en molnstod om dagen och i en eldstod om natten. 15 Om du dödar detta folk, alla på en gång, skall folken som hört talas om dig säga: 16 'Därför att Herren inte förmådde föra detta folk in i det land som han med ed hade lovat dem, har han slaktat dem i öknen.' 17 Nej, låt nu Herrens kraft bevisa sig stor, så som du själv har sagt: 18 Herren är sen till vrede och rik på nåd, han förlåter missgärning och överträdelse, men låter inte någon bli ostraffad, utan låter straffet för fädernas missgärning drabba barnen, ja, tredje och fjärde släktledet. 19 Förlåt nu detta folks missgärning efter din stora nåd, så som du har låtit din förlåtelse följa detta folk allt ifrån Egypten och ända hit."
Herren förlåter och straffar
20 Då sade Herren: "Jag förlåter dem enligt ditt ord. 21 Men så sant jag lever och så sant Herrens härlighet uppfyller hela jorden: 22 Av alla de män som har sett min härlighet och sett de tecken jag har gjort i Egypten och i öknen, och som nu tio gånger har frestat mig och inte lyssnat till min röst, 23 av dem skall ingen få se det land som jag med ed har lovat deras fäder. Ingen av dem som har föraktat mig skall få se det. 24 Men i min tjänare Kaleb är en annan ande, och han har i allt följt mig. Därför skall jag föra honom in i det land där han nu har varit, och hans avkomlingar skall ta det i besittning. 25 Men eftersom amalekiterna och kananeerna bor i dalen, så vänd er i morgon åt ett annat håll och tag vägen mot öknen åt Röda havet till."
26 Herren talade till Mose och Aron. Han sade: 27 "Hur länge skall denna onda menighet knota mot mig? Jag har hört hur Israels barn ständigt knotar mot mig. 28 Säg nu till dem: Så sant jag lever, säger Herren, jag skall göra med er så som ni själva har sagt inför mig. 29 Här i öknen skall era döda kroppar falla, alla ni som har blivit inmönstrade, alla som är tjugo år eller äldre, eftersom ni har knotat mot mig. 30 Ingen av er skall komma in i det land som jag med upplyft hand lovade er att få bo i, ingen utom Kaleb, Jefunnes son, och Josua, Nuns son. 31 Men era barn, som ni sade skulle bli fiendens byte, dem skall jag föra in där, och de skall lära känna det land som ni har förkastat. 32 Men era döda kroppar skall falla här i öknen. 33 Och era barn skall vara herdar i öknen i fyrtio år och få lida för er trolöshet, till dess att era döda kroppar förmultnat i öknen. 34 Så som ni under fyrtio dagar har bespejat landet, skall ni under fyrtio år - ett år för varje dag - bära på era synder. Ni skall då få erfara att jag har tagit min hand ifrån er. 35 Jag, Herren, har talat. Jag skall i sanning göra så med hela denna onda menighet som har rotat sig samman mot mig. Här i öknen skall de omkomma, här skall de dö."
36 De män som Mose hade sänt för att bespeja landet och som vid sin återkomst hade fått hela menigheten att knota mot honom genom att tala illa om landet, 37 ja, dessa män som hade talat illa om landet dog genom en hemsökelse, inför Herrens ansikte. 38 Av de män som hade gått ut för att bespeja landet överlevde endast Josua, Nuns son, och Kaleb, Jefunnes son.
Israels barn drivs tillbaka
39 Mose talade detta till alla Israels barn, och folket sörjde mycket. 40 De steg upp tidigt följande morgon för att bege sig upp mot den övre bergsbygden och sade: "Se, här är vi. Vi har syndat, men nu vill vi dra upp till den plats som Herren har talat om." 41 Men Mose sade: "Varför vill ni överträda Herrens befallning? Det kommer inte att lyckas. 42 Herren är inte med er. Därför skall ni inte dra dit upp för att inte bli slagna inför era fiender. 43 Amalekiterna och kananeerna skall där möta er, och ni kommer att falla för svärd, ty ni har vänt er bort ifrån Herren, och därför kommer Herren inte att vara med er."
44 I sitt övermod drog de ändå upp mot den övre bergsbygden, men Herrens förbundsark och Mose lämnade inte lägret. 45 Amalekiterna och kananeerna, som bodde där i bergsbygden, kom då ner och slog dem och drev dem på flykten ända till Horma.
Tillägg till offerlagarna
15 Herren talade till Mose. Han sade: 2 "Tala till Israels barn och säg till dem: När ni kommer in i det land som jag ger er att bo i, 3 och ni vill offra ett eldsoffer åt Herren, ett brännoffer eller ett slaktoffer av nötboskap eller småboskap, för att bereda Herren en ljuvlig doft - vare sig det gäller att fullgöra ett löfte eller om det är ett frivilligt offer eller era högtidsoffer - 4 så skall den som bär fram ett sådant offer åt Herren, också som matoffer bära fram en tiondels efa fint mjöl, blandat med en fjärdedels hin olja, 5 och som drickoffer skall du offra en fjärdedels hin vin för varje lamm tillsammans med brännoffret eller slaktoffret. 6 Till en bagge skall du som matoffer offra två tiondels efa fint mjöl, blandat med en tredjedels hin olja, 7 och som drickoffer skall du bära fram en tredjedels hin vin till en ljuvlig doft för Herren. 8 När du offrar en ungtjur till brännoffer eller slaktoffer för att fullgöra ett löfte eller som gemenskapsoffer åt Herren, 9 skall du tillsammans med tjuren som matoffer bära fram tre tiondels efa fint mjöl, blandat med en halv hin olja, 10 och som drick- offer skall du bära fram en halv hin vin, det är ett eldsoffer till en ljuvlig doft för Herren.
11 På detta sätt skall man göra med varje tjur, varje bagge, varje lamm eller killing. 12 Efter det antal ni offrar, skall ni göra så med var och en efter deras antal. 13 Varje infödd skall göra på detta sätt när han bär fram ett eldsoffer till en ljuvlig doft för Herren. 14 När en främling som bor hos er eller någon som vistas ibland er i kommande släkten vill offra ett eldsoffer till en ljuvlig doft för Herren, skall han göra så som ni gör. 15 Inom församlingen skall samma stadga gälla för er och för främlingen hos er, en evig stadga från släkte till släkte. Som det är för er, så skall det vara för främlingen inför Herrens ansikte. 16 Samma lag och samma rätt skall gälla för er och för främlingen som bor hos er." 17 Herren talade till Mose. Han sade: 18 "Tala till Israels barn och säg till dem: När ni kommer in i det land dit jag för er, 19 då skall ni, när ni äter av landets bröd, ge Herren en offergåva av det. 20 Av det första ni bakar skall ni ge en kaka till offergåva, som en offergåva från er loge skall ni ge den. 21 Ni skall ge åt Herren en offergåva, släkte efter släkte, av det första ni bakar.
22 Om ni försyndar er och inte håller alla dessa bud, som Herren kungjorde för Mose 23 - allt det som Herren befallde er genom Mose, från den dag då Herren gav sina befallningar och allt framgent, släkte efter släkte, - 24 om det skedde av misstag utan att menigheten visste det, skall hela menigheten offra en ungtjur som brännoffer, till en ljuvlig doft för Herren, med matoffret och drickoffret på föreskrivet sätt, och likaså en bock till syndoffer. 25 Och prästen skall bringa försoning för hela Israels menighet, och de skall få förlåtelse. Det var en synd av misstag, och de har burit fram sitt offer, ett eldsoffer åt Herren och sitt syndoffer inför Herrens ansikte för sitt misstag. 26 Hela Israels menighet och främlingen som bor ibland dem skall få förlåtelse, ty hela folket hade del i synden som skedde av misstag.
27 Om en enskild person av misstag syndar, skall han som syndoffer föra fram en årsgammal get. 28 Prästen skall bringa försoning för den som har felat genom att av misstag synda inför Herrens ansikte. Så blir han försonad och får förlåtelse. 29 Både för den infödde bland Israels barn och för främlingen som bor ibland dem skall samma lag gälla när någon begår en synd av misstag. 30 Men den som begår något med berått mod,[a] vare sig han är infödd eller främling, han hånar Herren och skall utrotas ur sitt folk. 31 Eftersom han har föraktat Herrens ord och brutit mot hans bud, måste han utrotas. Hans missgärning vilar på honom."
En sabbatsbrytare stenas
32 Medan Israels barn var i öknen, ertappades en man med att samla ihop ved på sabbatsdagen. 33 De som ertappade honom med att samla ihop ved förde honom till Mose och Aron och hela menigheten. 34 Då det inte var klart utsagt vad som borde göras med honom, satte de honom i förvar. 35 Och Herren sade till Mose: "Mannen skall straffas med döden. Hela menigheten skall stena honom utanför lägret." 36 Då förde hela menigheten ut honom utanför lägret och stenade honom till döds, så som Herren hade befallt Mose.

37 Herren sade till Mose: 38 "Tala till Israels barn och säg till dem att de, släkte efter släkte, skall göra tofsar i hörnen på sina kläder och sätta ett mörkblått snöre på varje hörntofs. 39 Ni skall ha sådana tofsar, och när ni ser dem skall ni tänka på alla Herrens bud och göra efter dem och inte följa era egna hjärtan och ögon, som lockar er till otrohet. 40 Så skall ni tänka på och göra efter alla mina bud och vara heliga inför er Gud. 41 Jag är Herren, er Gud, som förde er ut ur Egyptens land för att vara er Gud. Jag är Herren, er Gud."
