3 Und Eljasib, der Hohepriester, machte sich auf mit seinen Brüdern, den Priestern und bauten das Schaftor. Sie heiligten es und setzten seine Türen ein. Sie heiligten es aber bis an den Turm Mea, bis an den Turm Hananeel.
2 Neben ihm bauten die Männer von Jericho. Und daneben baute Sakkur, der Sohn Imris.
3 Aber das Fischtor bauten die Kinder von Senaa, sie deckten es und setzten seine Türen ein, Schlösser und Riegel.
4 Neben ihnen baute Meremoth, der Sohn Urias, des Sohnes Hakkoz. Neben ihnen baute Mesullam, der Sohn Berechjas, des Sohnes Mesesabeels. Neben ihnen baute Zadok, der Sohn Baanas.
5 Neben ihnen bauten die von Thekoa; aber ihre Vornehmeren brachten ihren Hals nicht zum Dienst ihrer Herren.
6 Das alte Tor baute Jojada, der Sohn Paseahs, und Mesullam, der Sohn Besodjas; sie deckten es und setzten ein seine Türen und Schlösser und Riegel.
7 Neben ihnen bauten Melatja von Gibeon und Jadon von Meronoth, die Männer von Gibeon und von Mizpa, am Stuhl des Landpflegers diesseit des Wassers.
8 Daneben baute Usiel, der Sohn des Harhajas, der Goldschmied. Neben ihm baute Hananja, der Sohn der Salbenbereiter; und sie bauten aus zu Jerusalem bis an die breite Mauer.
9 Neben ihm baute Rephaja, der Sohn Hurs, der Oberste des halben Kreises von Jerusalem.
10 Neben ihm baute Jedaja, der Sohn Harumaphs, gegenüber seinem Hause. Neben ihm baute Hattus, der Sohn Hasabnejas.
11 Aber Malchia, der Sohn Harims, und Hassub, der Sohn Pahath-Moabs, bauten ein andres Stück und den Ofenturm.
12 Daneben baute Sallum, der Sohn des Halohes, der Oberste des andern halben Kreises von Jerusalem, er und seine Töchter.
13 Das Taltor bauten Hanun und die Bürger von Sanoah, sie bauten's und setzten ein seine Türen, Schlösser und Riegel, und tausend Ellen an der Mauer bis an das Misttor.
14 Das Misttor aber baute Malchia, der Sohn Rechabs, der Oberste des Kreises von Beth-Cherem; er baute es und setzte ein seine Türen, Schlösser und Riegel.
15 Aber das Brunnentor baute Sallun, der Sohn Chol-Hoses, der Oberste des Kreises von Mizpa, er baute es und deckte es und setzte ein seine Türen, Schlösser und Riegel, dazu die Mauer am Teich Siloah bei dem Garten des Königs bis an die Stufen, die von der Stadt Davids herabgehen.
16 Nach ihm baute Nehemia, der Sohn Asbuks, der Oberste des halben Kreises von Beth-Zur, bis gegenüber den Gräbern Davids und bis an den Teich, den man gemacht hatte, und bis an das Haus der Helden.
17 Nach ihm bauten die Leviten, Rehum, der Sohn Banis. Neben ihm baute Hasabja, der Oberste des halben Kreises von Kegila, für seinen Kreis.
18 Nach ihm bauten ihre Brüder, Bavvai, der Sohn Henadads, der Oberste des andern halben Kreises von Kegila.
19 Neben ihm baute Eser, der Sohn Jesuas, der Oberste zu Mizpa, ein anderes Stück den Winkel hinan gegenüber dem Zeughaus.
20 Nach ihm auf dem Berge baute Baruch, der Sohn Sabbais, ein anderes Stück vom Winkel bis an die Haustür Eljasibs, des Hohenpriesters.
21 Nach ihm baute Meremoth, der Sohn Urias, des Sohnes Hakkoz, ein anderes Stück von der Haustür Eljasibs, bis an das Ende des Hauses Eljasibs,
22 Nach ihm bauten die Priester, die Männer aus der Gegend.
23 Nach dem baute Benjamin und Hassub gegenüber ihrem Hause. Nach dem baute Asarja, der Sohn Maasejas, des Sohnes Ananjas, neben seinem Hause.
24 Nach ihm baute Binnui, der Sohn Henadads, ein anderes Stück vom Hause Asarjas bis an den Winkel und bis an die Ecke.
25 Palal, der Sohn Usais, gegenüber dem Winkel und den Oberen Turm, der vom Königshause heraussieht bei dem Kerkerhofe. Nach ihm Pedaja, der Sohn Pareos.
26 Die Tempelknechte aber wohnten am Ophel bis an das Wassertor gegen Morgen, da der Turm heraussieht.
27 Nach dem bauten die von Thekoa ein anderes Stück gegenüber dem großen Turm, der heraussieht, und bis an die Mauer des Ophel.
28 Aber vom Roßtor an bauten die Priester, ein jeglicher gegenüber seinem Hause.
29 Nach dem baute Zadok, der Sohn Immers, gegenüber seinem Hause. Nach ihm baute Semaja, der Sohn Sechanjas, der Hüter des Tores gegen Morgen.
30 Nach ihm baute Hananja, der Sohn Selemjas, und Hanun, der Sohn Zalaphs, der sechste, ein anderes Stück. Nach ihm baute Mesullam, der Sohn Berechjas, gegenüber seiner Kammer.
31 Nach ihm baute Malchia, der Sohn des Goldschmieds, bis an das Haus der Tempelknechte und der Krämer, gegenüber dem Ratstor und bis an den Söller an der Ecke.
32 Und zwischen dem Söller und dem Schaftor bauten die Goldschmiede und die Krämer.
4 Da aber Saneballat hörte, daß wir die Mauer bauten, ward er zornig und sehr entrüstet und spottete der Juden
2 und sprach vor seinen Brüdern und den Mächtigen zu Samaria: Was machen die ohnmächtigen Juden? Wird man sie so lassen? Werden sie opfern? Werden sie es diesen Tag vollenden? Werden sie die Steine lebendig machen, die Schutthaufen und verbrannt sind?
3 Aber Tobia, der Ammoniter, neben ihm sprach: Laß sie nur bauen; wenn Füchse hinaufzögen, die zerrissen wohl ihre steinerne Mauer.
4 Höre, unser Gott, wie verachtet sind wir! Kehre ihren Hohn auf ihren Kopf, daß du sie gibst in Verachtung im Lande ihrer Gefangenschaft.
5 Decke ihre Missetat nicht zu, und ihre Sünde vertilge nicht vor dir; denn sie haben vor den Bauleuten dich erzürnt.
6 Aber wir bauten die Mauer und fügten sie ganz aneinander bis an die halbe Höhe. Und das Volk gewann ein Herz zu arbeiten.
7 Da aber Saneballat und Tobia und die Araber und Ammoniter und Asdoditer hörten, daß die Mauern zu Jerusalem zugemacht wurden und daß sie die Lücken hatten angefangen zu verschließen, wurden sie sehr zornig
8 und machten allesamt einen Bund zuhaufen, daß sie kämen und stritten wider Jerusalem und richteten darin Verwirrung an.
9 Wir aber beteten zu unserm Gott und stellten Hut gegen sie Tag und Nacht vor ihnen.
10 Und Juda sprach: Die Kraft der Träger ist zu schwach, und des Schuttes ist zu viel; wir können nicht an der Mauer bauen.
11 Unsre Widersacher aber gedachten: Sie sollen's nicht wissen noch sehen, bis wir mitten unter sie kommen und sie erwürgen und das Werk hindern.
12 Da aber die Juden, die neben ihnen wohnten, kamen, und sagten's uns wohl zehnmal, aus allen Orten, da sie um uns wohnten,
13 da stellte ich unten an die Orte hinter der Mauer in die Gräben das Volk nach ihren Geschlechtern mit ihren Schwertern, Spießen und Bogen.
14 Und ich besah es und machte mich auf und sprach zu den Ratsherren und Obersten und dem andern Volk: Fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen; gedenkt an den großen, schrecklichen HERRN und streitet für eure Brüder, Söhne, Töchter, Weiber und Häuser!
15 Da aber unsre Feinde hörten, daß es uns kund war geworden und Gott ihren Rat zunichte gemacht hatte, kehrten wir alle wieder zur Mauer, ein jeglicher zu seiner Arbeit.
16 Und es geschah von hier an, daß der Jünglinge die Hälfte taten die Arbeit, die andere Hälfte hielten die Spieße, Schilde, Bogen und Panzer. Und die Obersten standen hinter dem ganzen Hause Juda,
17 die da bauten an der Mauer. Und die da Last trugen von denen, die ihnen aufluden, mit einer Hand taten sie die Arbeit, und mit der andern hielten sie die Waffe.
18 Und ein jeglicher, der da baute, hatte sein Schwert an seine Lenden gegürtet und baute also; und der mit der Posaune blies, war neben mir.
19 Und ich sprach zu den Ratsherren und Obersten und zum andern Volk: Das Werk ist groß und weit, und wir sind zerstreut auf der Mauer, ferne voneinander.
20 An welchem Ort ihr nun die Posaune tönen hört, dahin versammelt euch zu uns. Unser Gott wird für uns streiten.
21 So arbeiteten wir am Werk, und ihre Hälfte hielt die Spieße von dem Aufgang der Morgenröte, bis die Sterne hervorkamen.
22 Auch sprach ich zu der Zeit zum Volk: Ein jeglicher bleibe mit seinen Leuten über Nacht zu Jerusalem, daß sie uns des Nachts der Hut und des Tages der Arbeit warten.
23 Aber ich und meine Brüder und meine Leute und die Männer an der Hut hinter mir, wir zogen unsere Kleider nicht aus; ein jeglicher ließ das Baden anstehen.
5 Und es erhob sich ein großes Geschrei des Volkes und ihrer Weiber wider ihre Brüder, die Juden.
2 Und waren etliche, die da sprachen: Unserer Söhne und Töchter sind viel; laßt uns Getreide nehmen und essen, daß wir leben.
3 Aber etliche sprachen: Laßt uns unsre Äcker, Weinberge und Häuser versetzen und Getreide nehmen in der Teuerung.
4 Etliche aber sprachen: Wir habe Geld entlehnt zum Schoß für den König auf unsre Äcker und Weinberge;
5 nun ist doch wie unsrer Brüder Leib auch unser Leib und wie ihre Kinder unsre Kinder, und siehe, wir müssen unsre Söhne und Töchter unterwerfen dem Dienst, und sind schon unsrer Töchter etliche unterworfen, und ist kein Vermögen in unsern Händen, und unsre Äcker und Weinberge sind der andern geworden.
6 Da ich aber ihr Schreien und solche Worte hörte, ward ich sehr zornig.
7 Und mein Herz ward Rats mit mir, daß ich schalt die Ratsherren und die Obersten und sprach zu ihnen: Wollt ihr einer auf den andern Wucher treiben? Und ich brachte die Gemeinde wider sie zusammen
8 und sprach zu ihnen: Wir haben unsre Brüder, die Juden, erkauft die den Heiden verkauft waren, nach unserm Vermögen; und ihr wollt auch eure Brüder verkaufen und sie sollen uns verkauft werden? Da schwiegen sie und fanden nichts zu antworten.
9 Und ich sprach: Es ist nicht gut, was ihr tut. Solltet ihr nicht in der Furcht Gottes wandeln um des Hohnes willen der Heiden, unsrer Feinde?
10 Ich und meine Brüder und meine Leute haben ihnen auch Geld geliehen und Getreide; laßt uns doch diese Schuld erlassen.
11 So gebt ihnen nun heute wieder ihre Äcker, Weinberge, Ölgärten und Häuser und den Hundertsten am Geld, am Getreide, am Most und am Öl, den ihr von ihnen zu fordern habt.
12 Da sprachen sie: Wir wollen's wiedergeben und wollen nichts von ihnen fordern und wollen tun wie du gesagt hast. Und ich rief die Priester und nahm einen Eid von ihnen, daß sie also tun sollten.
13 Auch schüttelte ich meinen Busen aus und sprach: Also schüttle Gott aus jedermann von seinem Hause und von seiner Arbeit, der dies Wort nicht handhabt, daß er sei ausgeschüttelt und leer. Und die ganze Gemeinde sprach: Amen! und lobte den HERRN. Und das Volk tat also.
14 Auch von der Zeit an, da mir befohlen ward, ihr Landpfleger zu sein im Lande Juda, nämlich vom zwanzigsten Jahr an bis in das zweiunddreißigste Jahr des Königs Arthahsastha, das sind zwölf Jahre, nährte ich mich und meine Brüder nicht von der Landpfleger Kost.
15 Denn die vorigen Landpfleger, die vor mir gewesen waren, hatten das Volk beschwert und hatten von ihnen genommen Brot und Wein, dazu auch vierzig Silberlinge; auch waren die Leute mit Gewalt gefahren über das Volk. Ich tat aber nicht also um der Furcht Gottes willen.
16 Auch arbeitete ich an der Mauer Arbeit und kaufte keinen Acker; und alle meine Leute mußten daselbst an die Arbeit zuhauf kommen.
17 Dazu waren die Juden und Obersten hundertundfünfzig an meinem Tisch und die zu uns kamen aus den Heiden, die um uns her sind.
18 Und man gebrauchte für mich des Tages einen Ochsen und sechs erwählte Schafe und Vögel und je innerhalb zehn Tagen allerlei Wein die Menge. Dennoch forderte ich nicht der Landpfleger Kost; denn der Dienst war schwer auf dem Volk.
19 Gedenke mir, mein Gott, zum Besten alles, was ich diesem Volk getan habe!
6 Und da Saneballat, Tobia und Gesem, der Araber, und unsre Feinde erfuhren, daß ich die Mauer gebaut hatte und keine Lücke mehr daran wäre, wiewohl ich die Türen zu der Zeit noch nicht eingehängt hatte in den Toren,
2 sandte Sanaballat und Gesem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: Komm und laß uns zusammenkommen in den Dörfern in der Fläche Ono! Sie gedachten mir aber Böses zu tun.
3 Ich aber sandte Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Ich habe ein großes Geschäft auszurichten, ich kann nicht hinabkommen; es möchte das Werk nachbleiben, wo ich die Hände abtäte und zu euch hinabzöge.
4 Sie sandten aber viermal zu mir auf diese Weise, und ich antwortete ihnen auf diese Weise.
5 Da sandte Saneballat zum fünftenmal zu mir seinen Diener mit einem offenen Brief in seiner Hand.
6 Darin war geschrieben: Es ist vor die Heiden gekommen, und Gesem hat's gesagt, daß du und die Juden gedenkt abzufallen, darum du die Mauer baust, und wollest also König werden;
7 und du habest die Propheten bestellt, die von dir ausrufen sollen zu Jerusalem und sagen: Er ist der König Juda's. Nun, solches wird vor den König kommen. So komm nun und laß uns miteinander ratschlagen!
8 Ich aber sandte zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Solches ist nicht geschehen, was du sagst; du hast es aus deinem Herzen erdacht.
9 Denn sie alle wollen uns furchtsam machen und gedachten: Sie sollen die Hand abtun vom Geschäft, daß es nicht fertig werde, aber nun stärke meine Hände!
10 Und ich kam in das Haus Semajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels; und er hatte sich verschlossen und sprach: Laß uns zusammenkommen im Hause Gottes mitten im Tempel und die Türen zuschließen; denn sie werden kommen, dich zu erwürgen, und werden bei der Nacht kommen, daß sie dich erwürgen.
11 Ich aber sprach: Sollte ein solcher Mann fliehen? Sollte ein solcher Mann, wie ich bin, in den Tempel gehen, daß er lebendig bleibe? Ich will nicht hineingehen.
12 Denn ich merkte, daß ihn Gott nicht gesandt hatte. Denn er sagte wohl Weissagung auf mich; aber Tobia und Saneballat hatten ihm Geld gegeben.
13 Darum nahm er Geld, auf daß ich mich fürchten sollte und also tun und sündigen, daß sie ein böses Gerücht hätten, damit sie mich lästern möchten.
14 Gedenke, mein Gott, des Tobia und Saneballat nach diesen Werken, auch der Prophetin Noadja und der anderen Propheten, die mich wollten abschrecken!
15 Und die Mauer ward fertig am fünfundzwanzigsten Tage des Monats Elul in zweiundfünfzig Tagen.
16 Und da alle unsre Feinde das hörten, fürchteten sich alle Heiden, die um uns her waren, und der Mut entfiel ihnen; denn sie merkten, daß dies Werk von Gott war.
17 Auch waren zu derselben Zeit viele der Obersten Juda's, deren Briefe gingen zu Tobia und von Tobia zu ihnen.
18 Denn ihrer waren viel in Juda, die ihm geschworen waren; denn er war der Eidam Sechanjas, des Sohnes Arahs, und sein Sohn Johanan hatte die Tochter Mesullams, des Sohnes Berechjas.
19 Und sie sagten Gutes von ihm vor mir und brachten meine Reden aus zu ihm. So sandte denn Tobia Briefe, mich abzuschrecken.
7 Da wir nun die Mauer gebaut hatten, hängte ich die Türen ein und wurden bestellt die Torhüter, Sänger und Leviten.
2 Und ich gebot meinem Bruder Hanani und Hananja, dem Burgvogt zu Jerusalem (denn er war ein treuer Mann und gottesfürchtig vor vielen andern),
3 und sprach zu Ihnen: Man soll die Tore Jerusalem nicht auftun, bis daß die Sonne heiß wird; und wenn man noch auf der Hut steht, soll man die Türen zuschlagen und verriegeln. Und es wurden Hüter bestellt aus den Bürgern Jerusalems, ein jeglicher auf seine Hut seinem Hause gegenüber.
4 Die Stadt aber war weit von Raum und groß, aber wenig Volk darin, und die Häuser wurden nicht gebaut.
5 Und mein Gott gab mir ins Herz, daß ich versammelte die Ratsherren und die Obersten und das Volk, sie zu verzeichnen. Und ich fand das Geschlechtsregister derer, die vorhin heraufgekommen waren, und fand darin geschrieben:
6 Dies sind die Kinder der Landschaft, die heraufgekommen sind aus der Gefangenschaft, die Nebukadnezar, der König zu Babel, hatte weggeführt, und die wieder gen Jerusalem und nach Juda kamen, ein jeglicher in seine Stadt,
7 und sind gekommen mit Serubabel, Jesua, Nehemia, Asarja, Raamja, Nahamani, Mardochai, Bilsan, Mispereth, Bigevai, Nehum und Baana. Dies ist die Zahl der Männer vom Volk Israel:
8 der Kinder Pareos waren zweitausend einhundert und zweiundsiebzig;
9 der Kinder Sephatja dreihundert und zweiundsiebzig;
10 der Kinder Arah sechshundert und zweiundfünfzig;
11 der Kinder Pahath-Moab von den Kindern Jesua und Joab zweitausend achthundert und achtzehn;
12 der Kinder Elam tausend zweihundert und vierundfünfzig;
13 der Kinder Satthu achthundert und fünfundvierzig;
14 der Kinder Sakkai siebenhundert und sechzig;
15 der Kinder Binnui sechshundert und achtundvierzig;
16 der Kinder Bebai sechshundert und achtundzwanzig;
17 der Kinder Asgad zweitausend dreihundert und zweiundzwanzig;
18 der Kinder Adonikam sechshundert und siebenundsechzig;
19 der Kinder Bigevai zweitausend und siebenundsechzig;
20 der Kinder Adin sechshundert und fünfundfünzig;
21 der Kinder Ater von Hiskia achtundneunzig;
22 der Kinder Hasum dreihundert und achtundzwanzig;
23 der Kinder Bezai dreihundert und vierundzwanzig;
24 der Kinder Hariph hundert und zwölf;
25 der Kinder von Gibeon fünfundneunzig;
26 der Männer von Bethlehem und Netopha hundert und achtundachtzig;
27 der Männer von Anathoth hundert und achtundzwanzig;
28 der Männer von Beth-Asmaveth zweiundvierzig;
29 der Männer von Kirjath-Jearim, Kaphira und Beeroth siebenhundert und dreiundvierzig;
30 der Männer von Rama und Geba sechshundert und einundzwanzig;
31 der Männer von Michmas hundert und zweiundzwanzig;
32 der Männer von Beth-El und Ai hundert und dreiundzwanzig;
33 der Männer vom andern Nebo zweiundfünfzig;
34 der Kinder des andern Elam tausend zweihundert und vierundfünfzig;
35 der Kinder Harim dreihundert und zwanzig;
36 der Kinder von Jericho dreihundert und fünfundvierzig;
37 der Kinder von Lod, Hadid und Ono siebenhundert und einundzwanzig;
38 der Kinder von Seena dreitausend und neunhundert und dreißig;
39 Die Priester: der Kinder Jedaja, vom Hause Jesua, neunhundert und dreiundsiebzig;
40 der Kinder Immer tausend und zweiundfünfzig;
41 der Kinder Pashur tausend zweihundert und siebenundvierzig;
42 der Kinder Harim tausend und siebzehn;
43 Die Leviten: der Kinder Jesua von Kadmiel, von den Kindern Hodavja, vierundsiebzig;
44 Die Sänger: der Kinder Asaph hundert und achtundvierzig;
45 Die Torhüter waren: die Kinder Sallum, die Kinder Ater, die Kinder Talmon, die Kinder Akkub, die Kinder Hatita, die Kinder Sobai, allesamt hundert und achtunddreißig;
46 Die Tempelknechte: die Kinder Ziha, die Kinder Hasupha, die Kinder Tabbaoth,
47 die Kinder Keros, die Kinder Sia, die Kinder Padon,
48 die Kinder Lebana, die Kinder Hagaba, die Kinder Salmai,
49 die Kinder Hanan, die Kinder Giddel, die Kinder Gahar,
50 die Kinder Reaja, die Kinder Rezin, die Kinder Nekoda,
51 die Kinder Gassam, die Kinder Usa, die Kinder Paseah,
52 die Kinder Besai, die Kinder der Meuniter, die Kinder der Nephusiter,
53 die Kinder Bakbuk, die Kinder Hakupha, die Kinder Harhur,
54 die Kinder Bazlith, die Kinder Mehida, die Kinder Harsa,
55 die Kinder Barkos, die Kinder Sisera, die Kinder Themah,
56 die Kinder Neziah, die Kinder Hatipha.
57 Die Kinder der Knechte Salomos waren: die Kinder Sotai, die Kinder Sophereth, die Kinder Perida,
58 die Kinder Jaala, die Kinder Darkon, die Kinder Giddel,
59 die Kinder Sephatja, die Kinder Hattil, die Kinder Pochereth von Zebaim, die Kinder Amon.
60 Aller Tempelknechte und Kinder der Knechte Salomos waren dreihundert und zweiundneunzig;
61 Und diese zogen auch mit herauf von Thel-Melah, Thel-Harsa, Cherub, Addon und Immer, aber sie konnten nicht anzeigen ihr Vaterhaus noch ihr Geschlecht, ob sie aus Israel wären:
62 die Kinder Delaja, die Kinder Tobia und die Kinder Nekoda, sechshundert und zweiundvierzig;
63 Und von den Priestern waren die Kinder Habaja, die Kinder Hakkoz, die Kinder Barsillai, der aus den Töchtern Barsillais, des Gileaditers, ein Weib nahm und ward nach ihrem Namen genannt.
64 Diese suchten ihr Geburtsregister; und da sie es nicht fanden, wurden sie untüchtig geachtet zum Priestertum.
65 Und der Landpfleger sprach zu ihnen, sie sollten nicht essen vom Hocheiligen, bis daß ein Priester aufkäme mit dem Licht und Recht.
66 Der ganzen Gemeinde wie ein Mann waren zweiundvierzigtausend und dreihundertundsechzig,
67 ausgenommen ihre Knechte und Mägde; derer waren siebentausend dreihundert und siebenunddreißig, dazu zweihundert und fünfundvierzig Sänger und Sängerinnen.
68 Und sie hatten siebenhundert und sechsunddreißig Rosse, zweihundert und fünfundvierzig Maultiere,
69 vierhundert und fünfunddreißig Kamele, sechstausend siebenhundert und zwanzig Esel.
70 Und etliche Obersten der Vaterhäuser gaben zum Werk. Der Landpfleger gab zum Schatz tausend Goldgulden, fünfzig Becken, fünfhundert und dreißig Priesterröcke.
71 Und etliche Obersten der Vaterhäuser gaben zum Schatz fürs Werk zwanzigtausend Goldgulden, zweitausend und zweihundert Pfund Silber.
72 Und das andere Volk gab zwanzigtausend Goldgulden und zweitausend Pfund Silber und siebenundsechzig Priesterröcke.

Die Mauern und Tore Jerusalems werden wieder aufgebaut
3 Und Eljaschib, der Hohepriester, machte sich auf samt seinen Brüdern, den Priestern, und sie bauten das Schaftor;[a] das heiligten sie und setzten seine Türflügel ein; und [sie bauten] weiter bis zum Turm Mea, den heiligten sie, [und] bis zum Turm Hananeel.
2 Neben ihnen[b] bauten die Männer von Jericho; und Sakkur, der Sohn Imris, baute neben ihnen.
3 Und das Fischtor bauten die Söhne Senaas; sie deckten es mit Balken und setzten seine Türflügel ein, seine Schlösser und seine Riegel.
4 Neben ihnen besserte Meremot aus, der Sohn Urijas, des Sohnes des Hakkoz. Neben ihnen besserte Meschullam aus, der Sohn Berechjas, des Sohnes Meschesabeels; und neben ihnen besserte Zadok aus, der Sohn Baanas.
5 Neben ihnen besserten die Leute von Tekoa aus; aber die Vornehmen unter ihnen beugten ihre Nacken nicht zum Dienst für ihren Herrn.
6 Das alte Tor besserten Jojada, der Sohn Paseachs, und Meschullam, der Sohn Besodjas, aus; sie deckten es mit Balken und setzten seine Türflügel ein, seine Schlösser und seine Riegel.
7 Neben ihnen besserte Melatja aus, der Gibeoniter, und Jadon, der Meronotiter, samt den Männern von Gibeon und von Mizpa, die der Gerichtsbarkeit des Statthalters jenseits des Stromes unterstanden.
8 Neben ihnen besserte Ussiel aus, der Sohn Harchajas, einer der Goldschmiede. Neben ihm besserte Hananja aus, ein Salbenmischer. Sie stellten Jerusalem wieder her bis an die breite Mauer.
9 Neben ihnen besserte Rephaja aus, der Sohn Hurs, der Oberste des halben Bezirks von Jerusalem.
10 Neben ihnen besserte Jedaja aus, der Sohn Harumaphs, und zwar gegenüber seinem Haus. Neben ihm besserte Hattus aus, der Sohn Hasabnias.
11 Malchija, der Sohn Harims, und Haschub, der Sohn Pachat-Moabs, besserten einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus und den Ofenturm.
12 Neben ihm besserte Schallum aus, der Sohn Hallohes, der Oberste des [anderen] halben Bezirks von Jerusalem, er und seine Töchter.
13 Das Taltor besserten Hanun und die Bürger von Sanoach aus. Sie bauten es und setzten seine Türflügel ein, seine Schlösser und seine Riegel, dazu 1 000 Ellen an der Mauer, bis zum Misttor.
14 Das Misttor aber besserte Malchija aus, der Sohn Rechabs, der Oberste über den Bezirk Beth-Kerem. Er baute es und setzte seine Türflügel ein, seine Schlösser und seine Riegel.
15 Aber das Quelltor besserte Schallun aus, der Sohn Kol-Hoses, der Oberste des Bezirks Mizpa. Er baute und überdachte es, setzte seine Türflügel ein, seine Schlösser und seine Riegel, dazu [baute er] die Mauern am Teich Siloah beim Garten des Königs, bis an die Stufen, die von der Stadt Davids herabführen.
16 Nach ihm besserte Nehemia aus, der Sohn Asbuks, der Oberste über die Hälfte des Bezirks Beth-Zur, bis gegenüber den Gräbern Davids und bis an den künstlichen Teich und bis an das Haus der Helden.
17 Nach ihm besserten die Leviten aus, Rehum, der Sohn Banis. Neben ihm besserte Hasabja aus, der Oberste über die Hälfte des Bezirks Kehila, für seinen Bezirk.
18 Nach ihm besserten ihre Brüder aus, Bawai, der Sohn Henadads, der Oberste über die [andere] Hälfte des Bezirks Kehila.
19 Neben ihm besserte Eser, der Sohn Jeschuas, der Oberste von Mizpa, einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus gegenüber dem Aufstieg zum Zeughaus am Winkel.
20 Nach ihm besserte Baruch, der Sohn Sabbais, mit Eifer einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus vom Winkel bis an die Haustür Eljaschibs, des Hohenpriesters.
21 Nach ihm besserte Meremot, der Sohn Urijas, des Sohnes des Hakkoz, einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus, von der Haustür Eljaschibs bis an das Ende des Hauses Eljaschibs.
22 Nach ihm besserten die Priester aus, die Männer aus der [Jordan]ebene.
23 Nach ihnen besserten Benjamin und Haschub ihrem Haus gegenüber aus. Nach ihnen besserte Asarja aus, der Sohn Maasejas, des Sohnes Ananjas, bei seinem Haus.
24 Nach ihm besserte Binnui, der Sohn Henadads, einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus, vom Haus Asarjas bis zum Winkel und bis an die Ecke.
25 Palal, der Sohn Usais, besserte gegenüber dem Winkel und dem oberen Turm aus, der am Haus des Königs vorspringt, bei dem Kerkerhof. Nach ihm Pedaja, der Sohn des Parhosch.
26 Die Tempeldiener[c] aber wohnten auf dem Ophel bis gegenüber dem Wassertor im Osten und dem vorspringenden Turm.
27 Nach ihm besserten die Leute von Tekoa einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus, gegenüber dem großen vorspringenden Turm und bis an die Ophelmauer.
28 Von dem Rosstor an besserten die Priester aus, jeder seinem Haus gegenüber.
29 Nach ihnen besserte Zadok aus, der Sohn Immers, seinem Haus gegenüber. Nach ihm besserte Schemaja aus, der Sohn Schechanjas, der Hüter des Osttores.
30 Nach ihm besserten Hananja, der Sohn Schelemjas, und Hanun, der sechste Sohn Zalaphs, einen weiteren Mauerabschnitt aus. Nach ihm besserte Meschullam aus, der Sohn Berechjas, gegenüber seiner Tempelkammer.
31 Nach ihm besserte Malchija, ein Goldschmied, aus bis an das Haus der Tempeldiener und der Händler, dem Tor Miphkad[d] gegenüber, bis zum Obergemach an der Mauerecke.
32 Und zwischen dem Obergemach an der Mauerecke und dem Schaftor besserten die Goldschmiede und die Händler aus.
Fortgang der Arbeiten trotz feindlichem Widerstand
33 Und es geschah, als Sanballat hörte, dass wir die Mauer bauten, da wurde er zornig und ärgerte sich sehr und spottete über die Juden.
34 Und er sprach vor seinen Brüdern und den Kriegsleuten von Samaria: Was machen die ohnmächtigen Juden? Soll man sie gewähren lassen? Werden sie ein Opfer darbringen?[e] Werden sie es eines Tages vollenden? Werden sie die Steine aus den Schutthaufen wieder beleben, da sie doch verbrannt sind[f]?
35 Und Tobija, der Ammoniter, war bei ihm und sprach: Sie mögen bauen, was sie wollen; wenn ein Fuchs hinaufginge, würde er ihre steinernen Mauern zerreißen!
36 Höre, unser Gott, wie verachtet wir sind, und lass ihre Schmähungen auf ihren Kopf zurückfallen und gib sie der Plünderung preis in einem Land der Gefangenschaft!
37 Und decke ihre Schuld nicht zu und lass ihre Sünde vor dir nicht ausgetilgt werden; denn sie haben [dich] vor den Bauleuten herausgefordert!
38 Wir aber bauten [weiter] an der Mauer; und die ganze Mauer schloss sich bis zur halben Höhe. Und das Volk gewann Mut zur Arbeit.
4 Und es geschah, als Sanballat und Tobija und die Araber, die Ammoniter und die Asdoditer hörten, dass die Wiederherstellung der Mauer von Jerusalem fortschritt und dass die Lücken sich zu schließen begannen, da wurden sie sehr zornig,
2 und sie verschworen sich alle miteinander, dass sie kommen und gegen Jerusalem kämpfen und Verwirrung anrichten wollten.
3 Wir aber beteten zu unserem Gott und stellten Wachen gegen sie auf, Tag und Nacht, [zum Schutz] vor ihnen.
4 Und Juda sprach: Die Kraft der Lastträger wankt, und es gibt so viel Schutt; wir können nicht [mehr] an der Mauer bauen!
5 Unsere Widersacher aber sprachen: Die sollen es nicht wissen noch sehen, bis wir mitten unter sie kommen und sie erschlagen und dem Werk ein Ende machen!
6 Als aber die Juden, die in ihrer Nähe wohnten, kamen und es uns [wohl] zehnmal sagten: Von allen Orten her, wohin ihr euch auch wenden mögt, [ziehen sie] gegen uns!,
7 da stellte ich das Volk nach ihren Geschlechtern an die tieferen Stellen hinter den Mauern, an die offenen Plätze, und stellte sie auf mit ihren Schwertern, Speeren und Bogen.
8 Und ich besah es und machte mich auf und sprach zu den Vornehmsten und zu den Vorstehern und zu dem übrigen Volk: Fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen! Gedenkt an den großen, furchtgebietenden Herrn und kämpft für eure Brüder, eure Söhne und eure Töchter, eure Frauen und eure Häuser!
9 Und es geschah, als unsere Feinde hörten, dass es uns bekannt geworden war und dass Gott ihren Rat zunichtegemacht hatte, da kehrten wir alle wieder zur Mauer zurück, jeder an seine Arbeit.
10 Und von jenem Tag an geschah es, dass die Hälfte meiner Diener[g] an dem Werk arbeitete, während die andere Hälfte mit Speeren, Schilden, Bogen und Brustpanzern bewaffnet war; und die Obersten standen hinter dem ganzen Haus Juda,
11 das an der Mauer baute. Und die Lastträger, die aufluden, verrichteten mit der einen Hand die Arbeit, während sie mit der anderen die Waffe hielten.
12 Und von den Bauleuten hatte jeder sein Schwert an die Seite gegürtet und baute so; der Schopharhornbläser aber stand neben mir.
13 Und ich sprach zu den Vornehmsten und zu den Vorstehern und zum übrigen Volk: Das Werk ist groß und weit, und wir sind auf der Mauer zerstreut und weit voneinander entfernt:
14 An dem Ort, von dem ihr nun den Schall des Schopharhornes hören werdet, dort sammelt euch zu uns. Unser Gott wird für uns kämpfen!
15 So arbeiteten wir an dem Werk, während die eine Hälfte die Speere hielt, vom Aufgang der Morgenröte bis zum Hervorkommen der Sterne.
16 Auch sprach ich zu jener Zeit zum Volk: Ein jeder bleibe mit seinem Diener über Nacht in Jerusalem, damit sie bei Nacht Wache halten und bei Tag die Arbeit verrichten!
17 Und weder ich noch meine Brüder noch meine Diener noch die Männer der Wache in meinem Gefolge zogen unsere Kleider aus; jeder hatte seine Waffe bei sich und Wasser.
Nehemia behebt Missstände unter dem Volk
5 Es erhob sich aber ein großes Geschrei des Volkes und ihrer Frauen gegen ihre Brüder, die Juden.
2 Und etliche sprachen: Wir, unsere Söhne und unsere Töchter sind viele; und wir müssen uns Getreide beschaffen, damit wir zu essen haben und leben können!
3 Andere sprachen: Wir mussten unsere Äcker, unsere Weinberge und unsere Häuser verpfänden, damit wir Getreide bekommen in der Hungersnot!
4 Etliche aber sprachen: Wir haben uns Geld leihen müssen auf unsere Äcker und unsere Weinberge, damit wir dem König die Steuern zahlen können.
5 Nun sind ja unsere Brüder vom gleichen Fleisch [und Blut] wie wir, und unsere Kinder sind wie ihre Kinder. Und siehe, wir müssen unsere Söhne und unsere Töchter in die Leibeigenschaft bringen, und von unseren Töchtern sind schon etliche zu leibeigenen Mägden geworden, und es steht nicht in unserer Macht, es zu verhindern, da ja unsere Äcker und Weinberge bereits anderen gehören!
6 Als ich aber ihr Geschrei und diese Worte hörte, wurde ich sehr zornig.
7 Dann überlegte ich bei mir selbst,[h] und ich wies die Vornehmsten und Vorsteher zurecht und sprach zu ihnen: Wollt ihr Wucher treiben an euren Brüdern? Und ich brachte eine große Versammlung gegen sie zusammen
8 und sprach zu ihnen: Wir haben unsere Brüder, die Juden, die an die Heiden verkauft waren, soweit es uns möglich war, losgekauft; ihr aber wollt sogar eure eigenen Brüder verkaufen? Sollen sie sich etwa an uns verkaufen? Da schwiegen sie und fanden keine Antwort.
9 Und ich sprach: Was ihr da tut, ist nicht gut! Solltet ihr nicht in der Furcht unseres Gottes wandeln wegen der Lästerung der Heiden, unserer Feinde?
10 Ich und meine Brüder und meine Diener haben ihnen auch Geld und Korn geliehen. Wir wollen ihnen doch diese Schuld erlassen!
11 Gebt ihnen heute noch ihre Äcker, ihre Weinberge, ihre Ölbäume und ihre Häuser zurück, dazu den Hundertsten vom Geld, vom Korn, vom Most und vom Öl, den ihr ihnen auferlegt habt!
12 Da sprachen sie: Wir wollen es zurückgeben und nichts von ihnen fordern, sondern es so machen, wie du gesagt hast! Und ich rief die Priester herbei und nahm einen Eid von ihnen, dass sie es so machen wollten.
13 Auch schüttelte ich den Bausch meines Gewandes[i] aus und sprach: So schüttle Gott jedermann von seinem Haus und von seinem Besitztum ab, der dies versprochen hat und nicht ausführt; ja, so werde er ausgeschüttelt und leer! Und die ganze Versammlung sprach: Amen! Und sie lobten den Herrn. Und das Volk handelte nach diesem Wort.
Nehemias Uneigennützigkeit
14 Auch habe ich von der Zeit an, da mir befohlen wurde, im Land Juda ihr Statthalter zu sein, nämlich vom zwanzigsten Jahr bis zum zweiunddreißigsten Jahr des Königs Artasasta, das sind zwölf Jahre, für mich und meine Brüder nicht den Unterhalt eines Statthalters beansprucht.[j]
15 Denn die früheren Statthalter, die vor mir gewesen waren, hatten das Volk bedrückt und von ihnen Brot und Wein genommen, dazu 40 Schekel Silber; auch ihre Diener herrschten willkürlich über das Volk; ich aber machte es nicht so, um der Furcht Gottes willen.
16 Auch habe ich am Wiederaufbau der Mauer gearbeitet, ohne dass wir Grundbesitz erwarben; und alle meine Diener kamen dort zur Arbeit zusammen.
17 Dazu aßen die Juden, sowohl die Vorsteher, 150 Mann, als auch die, welche von den Heiden aus der Umgebung zu uns kamen, an meinem Tisch.
18 Und man bereitete mir täglich einen Ochsen zu, sechs auserlesene Schafe, Geflügel und alle zehn Tage eine Menge verschiedener Weinsorten; für all dies forderte ich nicht den Unterhalt des Statthalters; denn der Dienst lastete schwer auf diesem Volk.
19 Gedenke, mein Gott, mir zum Guten, an all das, was ich für dieses Volk getan habe!
Nehemia begegnet den Intrigen der Feinde und vollendet die Mauer
6 Und es geschah, als Sanballat, Tobija und Geschem, der Araber, und unsere übrigen Feinde erfuhren, dass ich die Mauern gebaut hatte und dass keine Lücke mehr daran war — obwohl ich zu jener Zeit die Türflügel noch nicht in die Tore eingehängt hatte —,
2 da sandten Sanballat und Geschem zu mir und ließen mir sagen: Komm und lass uns in den Dörfern in der Ebene Ono zusammenkommen! Sie hatten aber im Sinn, mir Böses anzutun.
3 Da sandte ich Boten zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Ich habe ein großes Werk zu verrichten, darum kann ich nicht hinabkommen. Warum sollte das Werk stillstehen, wenn ich es ruhen lasse und zu euch hinabkomme?
4 Sie ließen mir aber viermal das Gleiche sagen, und ich gab ihnen die gleiche Antwort.
5 Da ließ mir Sanballat zum fünften Mal das Gleiche durch seinen Diener sagen; der kam mit einem offenen Brief in der Hand,
6 darin stand geschrieben: »Unter den Völkern verlautet und Gasmu sagt, dass du mitsamt den Juden einen Aufstand vorhast; darum würdest du die Mauer bauen, und du wolltest ihr König sein, so sagt man.
7 Und du hättest dir auch Propheten bestellt, die von dir in Jerusalem ausrufen und sagen sollen: Er ist König von Juda! Nun wird der König diese Gerüchte hören; darum komm, wir wollen miteinander beraten!«
8 Ich aber sandte zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Nichts von dem, was du sagst, ist geschehen; aus deinem eigenen Herzen hast du es erdacht!
9 Denn sie alle wollten uns furchtsam machen und dachten: Ihre Hände werden schon ablassen von dem Werk, und es wird nicht vollendet werden! — Nun aber stärke du meine Hände!
10 Und ich kam in das Haus Schemajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabeels. Der hatte sich eingeschlossen und sprach: Wir wollen zusammenkommen im Haus Gottes, im Inneren des Tempels,[k] und die Türflügel des Tempels schließen; denn sie werden kommen, um dich umzubringen, und zwar werden sie bei Nacht kommen, um dich umzubringen!
11 Ich aber sprach: Sollte ein Mann wie ich fliehen? Und wie könnte ein Mann wie ich in den Tempel gehen und am Leben bleiben? Ich werde nicht hineingehen!
12 Denn siehe, ich merkte wohl: Nicht Gott hatte ihn gesandt, sondern er sprach diese Weissagung über mich, weil Tobija und Sanballat ihn angeworben hatten;
13 und zwar war er zu dem Zweck angeworben worden, dass ich in Furcht geraten und dementsprechend handeln und mich versündigen sollte, damit sie meinen Namen verunglimpfen und mich verlästern könnten.
14 Gedenke, mein Gott, dem Tobija und dem Sanballat nach diesen ihren Werken, auch der Prophetin Noadja und den anderen Propheten, die mir Furcht einjagen wollten!
15 Und die Mauer wurde fertig am fünfundzwanzigsten Tag des Monats Elul, in 52 Tagen.
16 Und es geschah, als alle unsere Feinde dies hörten und alle Heiden rings um uns her dies sahen, da entfiel ihnen aller Mut[l]; denn sie erkannten, dass dieses Werk von unserem Gott getan worden war.
17 Auch ließen zu jener Zeit die Vornehmsten in Juda viele Briefe an Tobija abgehen, und auch von Tobija gelangten solche zu ihnen.
18 Denn es waren viele in Juda, die mit ihm verschworen waren, weil er der Schwiegersohn Schechanjas, des Sohnes Arachs, war und sein Sohn Johanan die Tochter Meschullams, des Sohnes Berechjas, zur Frau genommen hatte.
19 Sie redeten auch von seinen guten Werken[m] vor mir und hinterbrachten ihm meine Worte; und Tobija sandte Briefe, um mir Furcht einzujagen.
Schutz der Stadt vor den Feinden
7 Und es geschah, als die Mauer gebaut war, da setzte ich die Türflügel ein; und die Torhüter, Sänger und Leviten wurden in den Dienst gestellt.
2 Und ich gab meinem Bruder Hanani und Hananja, dem Obersten des Tempelbezirks, den Oberbefehl über Jerusalem; denn er war ein zuverlässiger Mann und gottesfürchtiger als viele [andere].
3 Und ich sprach zu ihnen: Man soll die Tore Jerusalems nicht öffnen, ehe die Sonne heiß scheint; und während sie noch Wache stehen, soll man die Türflügel schließen und verriegeln! Und stellt Wachen aus den Einwohnern Jerusalems auf, jeden auf seinen Posten, und zwar jeden gegenüber seinem Haus!
4 Nun war die Stadt nach allen Seiten weit und groß, das Volk darin aber spärlich, und es gab keine [neu] gebauten Häuser.[n]
Verzeichnis der mit Serubbabel zurückgekehrten Israeliten
5 Da gab mir mein Gott ins Herz, die Vornehmsten und die Vorsteher und das Volk zu versammeln, um sie nach ihren Geschlechtern aufzuzeichnen; und ich fand das Buch mit dem Geschlechtsregister derer, die zuerst heraufgezogen waren, und fand darin geschrieben:
6 Dies sind die Söhne der Provinz [Juda], die heraufgezogen sind aus der Gefangenschaft der Weggeführten, die Nebukadnezar, der König von Babel, weggeführt hatte, und die wieder nach Jerusalem und Juda zurückkehrten, jeder in seine Stadt;
7 die mit Serubbabel, Jeschua, Nehemia, Asarja, Raamja, Nahamani, Mordechai, Bilsan, Misperet, Bigwai, Nehum und Baana gekommen sind. Dies ist die Zahl der Männer des Volkes Israel:

Builders of the Wall
3 Eliashib(A) the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt(B) the Sheep Gate.(C) They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the Tower of Hananel.(D) 2 The men of Jericho(E) built the adjoining section, and Zakkur son of Imri built next to them.
3 The Fish Gate(F) was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. 4 Meremoth(G) son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired the next section. Next to him Meshullam son of Berekiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to him Zadok son of Baana also made repairs. 5 The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa,(H) but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.[a]
6 The Jeshanah[b] Gate(I) was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. 7 Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon(J) and Mizpah—Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth—places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates. 8 Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired the next section; and Hananiah, one of the perfume-makers, made repairs next to that. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.(K) 9 Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section. 10 Adjoining this, Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house, and Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs next to him. 11 Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens.(L) 12 Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section with the help of his daughters.
13 The Valley Gate(M) was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah.(N) They rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. They also repaired a thousand cubits[c] of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.(O)
14 The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Rekab, ruler of the district of Beth Hakkerem.(P) He rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place.
15 The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Kol-Hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofing it over and putting its doors and bolts and bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam,[d](Q) by the King’s Garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David. 16 Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur,(R) made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs[e](S) of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes.
17 Next to him, the repairs were made by the Levites under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him, Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah,(T) carried out repairs for his district. 18 Next to him, the repairs were made by their fellow Levites under Binnui[f] son of Henadad, ruler of the other half-district of Keilah. 19 Next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, from a point facing the ascent to the armory as far as the angle of the wall. 20 Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21 Next to him, Meremoth(U) son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib’s house to the end of it.
22 The repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding region. 23 Beyond them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house; and next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house. 24 Next to him, Binnui(V) son of Henadad repaired another section, from Azariah’s house to the angle and the corner, 25 and Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace near the court of the guard.(W) Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh(X) 26 and the temple servants(Y) living on the hill of Ophel(Z) made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate(AA) toward the east and the projecting tower. 27 Next to them, the men of Tekoa(AB) repaired another section, from the great projecting tower(AC) to the wall of Ophel.
28 Above the Horse Gate,(AD) the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 29 Next to them, Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. Next to him, Shemaiah son of Shekaniah, the guard at the East Gate, made repairs. 30 Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berekiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. 31 Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; 32 and between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate(AE) the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.
Opposition to the Rebuilding
4 [g]When Sanballat(AF) heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews, 2 and in the presence of his associates(AG) and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble(AH)—burned as they are?”
3 Tobiah(AI) the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”(AJ)
4 Hear us, our God, for we are despised.(AK) Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not cover up their guilt(AL) or blot out their sins from your sight,(AM) for they have thrown insults in the face of[h] the builders.
6 So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.
7 But when Sanballat, Tobiah,(AN) the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. 8 They all plotted together(AO) to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it. 9 But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
10 Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers(AP) is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.”
11 Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”
12 Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
13 Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows. 14 After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid(AQ) of them. Remember(AR) the Lord, who is great and awesome,(AS) and fight(AT) for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
15 When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it,(AU) we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.
16 From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon(AV) in the other, 18 and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet(AW) stayed with me.
19 Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet,(AX) join us there. Our God will fight(AY) for us!”
21 So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out. 22 At that time I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.” 23 Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.[i]
Nehemiah Helps the Poor
5 Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews. 2 Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.”
3 Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields,(AZ) our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”(BA)
4 Still others were saying, “We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax(BB) on our fields and vineyards. 5 Although we are of the same flesh and blood(BC) as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery.(BD) Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”(BE)
6 When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry. 7 I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, “You are charging your own people interest!”(BF) So I called together a large meeting to deal with them 8 and said: “As far as possible, we have bought(BG) back our fellow Jews who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your own people, only for them to be sold back to us!” They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say.(BH)
9 So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach(BI) of our Gentile enemies? 10 I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest!(BJ) 11 Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest(BK) you are charging them—one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.”
12 “We will give it back,” they said. “And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.”
Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath(BL) to do what they had promised. 13 I also shook(BM) out the folds of my robe and said, “In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!”
At this the whole assembly said, “Amen,”(BN) and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.
14 Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes,(BO) when I was appointed to be their governor(BP) in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year—twelve years—neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor. 15 But the earlier governors—those preceding me—placed a heavy burden on the people and took forty shekels[j] of silver from them in addition to food and wine. Their assistants also lorded it over the people. But out of reverence for God(BQ) I did not act like that. 16 Instead,(BR) I devoted myself to the work on this wall. All my men were assembled there for the work; we[k] did not acquire any land.
17 Furthermore, a hundred and fifty Jews and officials ate at my table, as well as those who came to us from the surrounding nations. 18 Each day one ox, six choice sheep and some poultry(BS) were prepared for me, and every ten days an abundant supply of wine of all kinds. In spite of all this, I never demanded the food allotted to the governor, because the demands were heavy on these people.
19 Remember(BT) me with favor, my God, for all I have done for these people.
Further Opposition to the Rebuilding
6 When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah,(BU) Geshem(BV) the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates— 2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages[l] on the plain of Ono.(BW)”
But they were scheming to harm me; 3 so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” 4 Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat(BX) sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter 6 in which was written:
“It is reported among the nations—and Geshem[m](BY) says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king 7 and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”
8 I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”
9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”
But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”
10 One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple(BZ), and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.”
11 But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!” 12 I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me(CA) because Tobiah and Sanballat(CB) had hired him. 13 He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.(CC)
14 Remember(CD) Tobiah and Sanballat,(CE) my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet(CF) Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets(CG) have been trying to intimidate me. 15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
Opposition to the Completed Wall
16 When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
17 Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. 18 For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shekaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. 19 Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.
7 After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers,(CH) the musicians(CI) and the Levites(CJ) were appointed. 2 I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani,(CK) along with Hananiah(CL) the commander of the citadel,(CM) because he was a man of integrity and feared(CN) God more than most people do. 3 I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.”

4 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it,(CP) and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. 5 So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:
6 These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles(CQ) whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town, 7 in company with Zerubbabel,(CR) Joshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum and Baanah):

3 Also the sons of Hassenaah built (F)the Fish Gate; they laid its beams and (G)hung its doors with its bolts and bars. 4 And next to them (H)Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of [c]Koz, made repairs. Next to them (I)Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them Zadok the son of Baana made repairs. 5 Next to them the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles did not put their [d]shoulders to (J)the work of their Lord.
6 Moreover Jehoiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired (K)the Old Gate; they laid its beams and hung its doors, with its bolts and bars. 7 And next to them Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, the (L)men of Gibeon and Mizpah, repaired the (M)residence[e] of the governor of the region [f]beyond the River. 8 Next to him Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. Also next to him Hananiah, [g]one of the perfumers, made repairs; and they [h]fortified Jerusalem as far as the (N)Broad Wall. 9 And next to them Rephaiah the son of Hur, leader of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. 10 Next to them Jedaiah the son of Harumaph made repairs in front of his house. And next to him Hattush the son of Hashabniah made repairs.
11 Malchijah the son of Harim and Hashub the son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section, (O)as well as the Tower of the Ovens. 12 And next to him was Shallum the son of Hallohesh, leader of half the district of Jerusalem; he and his daughters made repairs.
13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired (P)the Valley Gate. They built it, hung its doors with its bolts and bars, and repaired a thousand cubits of the wall as far as (Q)the Refuse Gate.
14 Malchijah the son of Rechab, leader of the district of (R)Beth Haccerem, repaired the Refuse Gate; he built it and hung its doors with its bolts and bars.
15 Shallun the son of Col-Hozeh, leader of the district of Mizpah, repaired (S)the Fountain Gate; he built it, covered it, hung its doors with its bolts and bars, and repaired the wall of the Pool of (T)Shelah[i] by the (U)King’s Garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the City of David. 16 After him Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, leader of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs as far as the place in front of the [j]tombs of David, to the (V)man-made pool, and as far as the House of the Mighty.
17 After him the Levites, under Rehum the son of Bani, made repairs. Next to him Hashabiah, leader of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. 18 After him their brethren, under [k]Bavai the son of Henadad, leader of the other half of the district of Keilah, made repairs. 19 And next to him Ezer the son of Jeshua, the leader of Mizpah, repaired another section in front of the Ascent to the Armory at the (W)buttress.[l] 20 After him Baruch the son of [m]Zabbai carefully repaired the other section, from the [n]buttress to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21 After him Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of [o]Koz, repaired another section, from the door of the house of Eliashib to the end of the house of Eliashib.
22 And after him the priests, the men of the plain, made repairs. 23 After him Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. After them Azariah the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs by his house. 24 After him (X)Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to (Y)the [p]buttress, even as far as the corner. 25 Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the [q]buttress, and on the tower which projects from the king’s upper house that was by the (Z)court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs.
26 Moreover (AA)the Nethinim who dwelt in (AB)Ophel made repairs as far as the place in front of (AC)the Water Gate toward the east, and on the projecting tower. 27 After them the Tekoites repaired another section, next to the great projecting tower, and as far as the wall of Ophel.
28 Beyond the (AD)Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 29 After them Zadok the son of Immer made repairs in front of his own house. After him Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, made repairs. 30 After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After him Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs in front of his [r]dwelling. 31 After him Malchijah, [s]one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the Nethinim and of the merchants, in front of the [t]Miphkad Gate, and as far as the upper room at the corner. 32 And between the upper room at the corner, as far as the (AE)Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.
The Wall Defended Against Enemies
4 But it so happened, (AF)when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, that he was furious and very indignant, and mocked the Jews. 2 And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish—stones that are burned?”
3 Now (AG)Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall.”
4 (AH)Hear, O our God, for we are despised; (AI)turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity! 5 (AJ)Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders.
6 So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.
7 Now it happened, (AK)when Sanballat, Tobiah, (AL)the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the [u]gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry, 8 and all of them (AM)conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion. 9 Nevertheless (AN)we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.
10 Then Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is failing, and there is so much rubbish that we are not able to build the wall.”
11 And our adversaries said, “They will neither know nor see anything, till we come into their midst and kill them and cause the work to cease.”
12 So it was, when the Jews who dwelt near them came, that they told us ten times, “From whatever place you turn, they will be upon us.”
13 Therefore I positioned men behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. 14 And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people, (AO)“Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, (AP)great and awesome, and (AQ)fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
15 And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and (AR)that God had brought their plot to nothing, that all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work. 16 So it was, from that time on, that half of my servants worked at construction, while the other half held the spears, the shields, the bows, and wore armor; and the leaders [v]were behind all the house of Judah. 17 Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked at construction, and with the other held a weapon. 18 Every one of the builders had his sword girded at his side as he built. And the one who sounded the trumpet was beside me.
19 Then I said to the nobles, the rulers, and the rest of the people, “The work is great and extensive, and we are separated far from one another on the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. (AS)Our God will fight for us.”
21 So we labored in the work, and half of [w]the men held the spears from daybreak until the stars appeared. 22 At the same time I also said to the people, “Let each man and his servant stay at night in Jerusalem, that they may be our guard by night and a working party by day.” 23 So neither I, my brethren, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me took off our clothes, except that everyone took them off for washing.
Nehemiah Deals with Oppression
5 And there was a great (AT)outcry of the people and their wives against their (AU)Jewish brethren. 2 For there were those who said, “We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.”
3 There were also some who said, “We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine.”
4 There were also those who said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our lands and vineyards. 5 Yet now (AV)our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we (AW)are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards.”
6 And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. 7 After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, (AX)“Each of you is [x]exacting usury from his brother.” So I [y]called a great assembly against them. 8 And I said to them, “According to our ability we have (AY)redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?”
Then they were silenced and found nothing to say. 9 Then I said, “What you are doing is not good. Should you not walk (AZ)in the fear of our God (BA)because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies? 10 I also, with my brethren and my servants, am lending them money and grain. Please, let us stop this [z]usury! 11 Restore now to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also a hundredth of the money and the grain, the new wine and the oil, that you have charged them.”
12 So they said, “We will restore it, and will require nothing from them; we will do as you say.”
Then I called the priests, (BB)and required an oath from them that they would do according to this promise. 13 Then (BC)I shook out [aa]the fold of my garment and said, “So may God shake out each man from his house, and from his property, who does not perform this promise. Even thus may he be shaken out and emptied.”
And all the assembly said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord. (BD)Then the people did according to this promise.
The Generosity of Nehemiah
14 Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year (BE)until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers (BF)ate the governor’s provisions. 15 But the former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but (BG)I did not do so, because of the (BH)fear of God. 16 Indeed, I also continued the (BI)work on this wall, and [ab]we did not buy any land. All my servants were gathered there for the work.
17 And (BJ)at my table were one hundred and fifty Jews and rulers, besides those who came to us from the nations around us. 18 Now that (BK)which was prepared daily was one ox and six choice sheep. Also fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine. Yet in spite of this (BL)I did not demand the governor’s provisions, because the bondage was heavy on this people.
19 (BM)Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
Conspiracy Against Nehemiah
6 Now it happened (BN)when Sanballat, Tobiah, [ac]Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall, and that there were no breaks left in it (BO)(though at that time I had not hung the doors in the gates), 2 that Sanballat and [ad]Geshem (BP)sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together [ae]among the villages in the plain of (BQ)Ono.” But they (BR)thought to do me harm.
3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”
4 But they sent me this message four times, and I answered them in the same manner.
5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me as before, the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand. 6 In it was written:
It is reported among the nations, and [af]Geshem says, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore, according to these rumors, you are rebuilding the wall, (BS)that you may be their king. 7 And you have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, “There is a king in Judah!” Now these matters will be reported to the king. So come, therefore, and let us consult together.
8 Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart.”
9 For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done.”
Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10 Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the [ag]temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.”
11 And I said, “Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!” 12 Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that (BT)he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13 For this reason he was hired, that I should be afraid and act that way and sin, so that they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14 (BU)My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the (BV)prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid.
The Wall Completed
15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days. 16 And it happened, (BW)when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for (BX)they perceived that this work was done by our God.
17 Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them. 18 For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the (BY)son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of (BZ)Meshullam the son of Berechiah. 19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and reported my [ah]words to him. Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.
List of Returning Exiles
7 Then it was, when the wall was built and I had (CA)hung the doors, when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, 2 that I gave the charge of Jerusalem to my brother (CB)Hanani, and Hananiah the leader (CC)of the [ai]citadel, for he was a faithful man and (CD)feared God more than many.
3 And I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house.”
The Captives Who Returned to Jerusalem(CE)
4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were (CF)few, and the houses were not rebuilt. 5 Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of those who had come up in the first return, and found written in it:
6 (CG)These are the people of the province who came back from the captivity, of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his city.
7 Those who came with (CH)Zerubbabel were Jeshua, Nehemiah, [aj]Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, [ak]Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.
The number of the men of the people of Israel: 8 the sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two;
9 the sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two;
10 the sons of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two;
11 the sons of Pahath-Moab, of the sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred and eighteen;
12 the sons of Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;
13 the sons of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five;
14 the sons of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty;
15 the sons of [al]Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight;
16 the sons of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight;
17 the sons of Azgad, two thousand three hundred and twenty-two;
18 the sons of Adonikam, six hundred and sixty-seven;
19 the sons of Bigvai, two thousand and sixty-seven;
20 the sons of Adin, six hundred and fifty-five;
21 the sons of Ater of Hezekiah, ninety-eight;
22 the sons of Hashum, three hundred and twenty-eight;
23 the sons of Bezai, three hundred and twenty-four;
24 the sons of [am]Hariph, one hundred and twelve;
25 the sons of [an]Gibeon, ninety-five;
26 the men of Bethlehem and Netophah, one hundred and eighty-eight;
27 the men of Anathoth, one hundred and twenty-eight;

29 the men of [ap]Kirjath Jearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred and forty-three;
30 the men of Ramah and Geba, six hundred and twenty-one;

32 the men of Bethel and Ai, one hundred and twenty-three;
33 the men of the other Nebo, fifty-two;
34 the sons of the other (CI)Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four;

36 the sons of Jericho, three hundred and forty-five;
37 the sons of Lod, Hadid, and Ono, seven hundred and twenty-one;
38 the sons of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred and thirty.
39 The priests: the sons of (CJ)Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred and seventy-three;
40 the sons of (CK)Immer, one thousand and fifty-two;
41 the sons of (CL)Pashhur, one thousand two hundred and forty-seven;
42 the sons of (CM)Harim, one thousand and seventeen.
43 The Levites: the sons of Jeshua, of Kadmiel,
and of the sons of [aq]Hodevah, seventy-four.
44 The singers: the sons of Asaph, one hundred and forty-eight.
45 The gatekeepers: the sons of Shallum,
the sons of Ater,
the sons of Talmon,
the sons of Akkub,
the sons of Hatita,
the sons of Shobai, one hundred and thirty-eight.
46 The Nethinim: the sons of Ziha,
the sons of Hasupha,
the sons of Tabbaoth,
47 the sons of Keros,
the sons of [ar]Sia,
the sons of Padon,
48 the sons of [as]Lebana,
the sons of [at]Hagaba,
the sons of [au]Salmai,
49 the sons of Hanan,
the sons of Giddel,
the sons of Gahar,
50 the sons of Reaiah,
the sons of Rezin,
the sons of Nekoda,
51 the sons of Gazzam,
the sons of Uzza,
the sons of Paseah,

the sons of Hakupha,
the sons of Harhur,
54 the sons of [aw]Bazlith,
the sons of Mehida,
the sons of Harsha,

the sons of Tamah,
56 the sons of Neziah,
and the sons of Hatipha.
57 The sons of Solomon’s servants: the sons of Sotai,
the sons of Sophereth,
the sons of [ax]Perida,
58 the sons of Jaala,
the sons of Darkon,
the sons of Giddel,
59 the sons of Shephatiah,
the sons of Hattil,
the sons of Pochereth of Zebaim,
and the sons of [ay]Amon.
60 All the Nethinim, and the sons of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred and ninety-two.
61 And these were the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, [az]Addon, and Immer, but they could not identify their father’s house nor their lineage, whether they were of Israel: 62 the sons of Delaiah,
the sons of Tobiah,
the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two;
63 and of the priests: the sons of Habaiah,
the sons of [ba]Koz,
the sons of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name.
64 These sought their listing among those who were registered by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore they were excluded from the priesthood as defiled. 65 And the [bb]governor said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things till a priest could consult with the Urim and Thummim.
66 Altogether the whole assembly was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty, 67 besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five men and women singers. 68 Their horses were seven hundred and thirty-six, their mules two hundred and forty-five, 69 their camels four hundred and thirty-five, and donkeys six thousand seven hundred and twenty.
70 And some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the work. (CN)The [bc]governor gave to the treasury one thousand gold drachmas, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly garments. 71 Some of the heads of the fathers’ houses gave to the treasury of the work (CO)twenty thousand gold drachmas, and two thousand two hundred silver minas. 72 And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousand silver minas, and sixty-seven priestly garments.
73 So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the Nethinim, and all Israel dwelt in their cities.
Ezra Reads the Law
(CP)When the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.
