¹¹ Seraiah the son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, ruler of the house of God,

¹¹ and Azariah the son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the ^(A)chief officer of the house of God;

²⁴ Now when ^(A)the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to.

Ezra Sent to Teach the People

7 Now after this, ^(A)in the reign of ^(B)Artaxerxes king of Persia, ^(C)Ezra the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, ² son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, ³ son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, ⁴ son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, ⁵ son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest—

^13 (A)while Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, ^(B)Mahath, and Benaiah were overseers assisting Conaniah and Shimei his brother, by the appointment of Hezekiah the king and ^(C)Azariah the chief officer of the house of God.

¹¹ And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you ^(A)in all matters of the Lord; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the governor of the house of Judah, in all the king's matters, and the Levites will serve you as officers. ^(B)Deal courageously, and may the Lord be with the upright!”^[a]

A Genealogy of the Returned Exiles

9 So all Israel was recorded in genealogies, and these are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And ^(A)Judah was taken into exile in Babylon because of their breach of faith.

⁷ Meraioth fathered Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub, ^8 (A)Ahitub fathered ^(B)Zadok, Zadok fathered Ahimaaz, ⁹ Ahimaaz fathered Azariah, Azariah fathered Johanan, ¹⁰ and Johanan fathered Azariah (^(C)it was he who served as priest ^(D)in the house that Solomon built in Jerusalem). ^11 (E)Azariah fathered ^(F)Amariah, Amariah fathered Ahitub, ¹² Ahitub fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered ^(G)Shallum, ¹³ Shallum fathered ^(H)Hilkiah, Hilkiah fathered Azariah, ¹⁴ Azariah fathered ^(I)Seraiah, Seraiah fathered Jehozadak;

³² And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was to be chief over the chiefs of the Levites, and to have oversight of those who kept guard over the sanctuary.
