A Girl Restored and a Woman Healed

¹⁸ As he was telling them these things,^(A) suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter just died,^[a] but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”^(B)

¹⁹ So Jesus and his disciples got up and followed^(A) him.

²³ When Jesus came to the leader’s house, he saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.^{(A) 24} “Leave,” he said, “because the girl is not dead but asleep.”^(B) And they laughed at him. ²⁵ After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up.^{(C) 26} Then news of this spread throughout that whole area.^(D)

²² One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus,^(A) came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet^{(B) 23} and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on^(C) her so that she can get well^[a](D) and live.” ²⁴ So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him.

³⁵ While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher^(A) anymore?”

³⁶ When Jesus overheard^[a] what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid.^(B) Only believe.” ³⁷ He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter,^(C) James,^(D) and John,^(E) James’s brother. ³⁸ They came to the leader’s house, and he saw a commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly. ³⁹ He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping?^(F) The child^(G) is not dead but asleep.”^{(H) 40} They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father,^(I) mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was. ⁴¹ Then he took the child^(J) by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum”^[b] (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up”^(K)). ⁴² Immediately the girl got up^(L) and began to walk.^(M) (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.^{(N) 43} Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about this^(O) and told them to give her something to eat.

⁴¹ Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue.^(A) He fell down at Jesus’s feet and pleaded with him to come to his house,

⁴² because he had an only daughter^(A) about twelve years old, and she was dying.

While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him.^(B)

⁴⁹ While he was still speaking,^(A) someone came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother^(B) the teacher^(C) anymore.”
