John the Baptist Prepares the Way
3 (A)In those days (B)John the Baptist came preaching in (C)the wilderness of Judea, 2 (D)“Repent, for (E)the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[a] 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
(F)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(G)‘Prepare[b] the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight.’”
4 Now John wore (H)a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was (I)locusts and (J)wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, (K)confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of (L)the Pharisees and (M)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, (N)“You brood of (O)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (P)the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit (Q)in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, (R)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from (S)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (T)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 (U)“I baptize you with water (V)for repentance, but (W)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you (X)with the Holy Spirit and (Y)fire. 12 His (Z)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and (AA)gather his wheat into the barn, (AB)but the chaff he will burn with (AC)unquenchable fire.”
The Baptism of Jesus
13 (AD)Then Jesus came (AE)from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 (AF)John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, (AG)the heavens were opened to him,[c] and he (AH)saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, (AI)a voice from heaven said, (AJ)“This is my beloved Son,[d] with whom I am well pleased.”

3 Á þeim dögum kemur Jóhannes skírari fram og prédikar í óbyggðum Júdeu.
2 Hann sagði: "Gjörið iðrun, himnaríki er í nánd."
3 Jóhannes er sá sem svo er um mælt hjá Jesaja spámanni: Rödd hrópanda í eyðimörk: Greiðið veg Drottins, gjörið beinar brautir hans.
4 Jóhannes bar klæði úr úlfaldahári og leðurbelti um lendar sér og hafði til matar engisprettur og villihunang.
5 Menn streymdu til hans frá Jerúsalem, allri Júdeu og Jórdanbyggð,
6 létu skírast af honum í ánni Jórdan og játuðu syndir sínar.
7 Þegar hann sá, að margir farísear og saddúkear komu til skírnar, sagði hann við þá: "Þér nöðru kyn, hver kenndi yður að flýja komandi reiði?
8 Berið þá ávöxt samboðinn iðruninni!
9 Látið yður ekki til hugar koma, að þér getið sagt með sjálfum yður: ,Vér eigum Abraham að föður.` Ég segi yður, að Guð getur vakið Abraham börn af steinum þessum.
10 Öxin er þegar lögð að rótum trjánna, og hvert það tré, sem ber ekki góðan ávöxt, verður upp höggvið og í eld kastað.
11 Ég skíri yður með vatni til iðrunar, en sá sem kemur eftir mig, er mér máttugri, og er ég ekki verður að bera skó hans. Hann mun skíra yður með heilögum anda og eldi.
12 Hann er með varpskófluna í hendi sér og mun gjörhreinsa láfa sinn og safna hveiti sínu í hlöðu, en hismið mun hann brenna í óslökkvanda eldi."
13 Þá kemur Jesús frá Galíleu að Jórdan til Jóhannesar að taka skírn hjá honum.
14 Jóhannes vildi varna honum þess og sagði: "Mér er þörf að skírast af þér, og þú kemur til mín!"
15 Jesús svaraði honum: "Lát það nú eftir. Þannig ber okkur að fullnægja öllu réttlæti." Og hann lét það eftir honum.
16 En þegar Jesús hafði verið skírður, sté hann jafnskjótt upp úr vatninu. Og þá opnuðust himnarnir, og hann sá anda Guðs stíga niður eins og dúfu og koma yfir sig.
17 Og rödd kom af himnum: "Þessi er minn elskaði sonur, sem ég hef velþóknun á."

3 Unya, miabot ang panahon nga si Juan nga tigbautismo miadto sa kamingawan sa Judea, ug nagsugod siya sa pagwali ngadto sa mga tawo. Miingon siya, 2 “Paghinulsol kamo ug biyai ninyo ang inyong mga sala, kay ang paghari sa Dios haduol na!” 3 Si Juan mao ang gihisgotan ni Propeta Isaias sa dihang miingon siya,
“May tigbalita nga nagasinggit sa kamingawan. Nagaingon siya,
‘Andama ninyo ang agianan alang sa Ginoo.
Tul-ira ang dalan nga iyang paga-agian.’ ”[a]
4 Ang bisti ni Juan hinimo gikan sa balhibo sa kamelyo ug ang iyang bakos panit. Ang iyang pagkaon dulon ug dugos. 5 Daghan gayod ang miadto kaniya nga mga tawo nga gikan sa Jerusalem, sa mga lungsod sa Judea ug sa mga lungsod nga duol sa Suba sa Jordan. 6 Gisugid nila ang ilang mga sala ug gibautismohan sila ni Juan didto sa Suba sa Jordan.
7 Nakita ni Juan nga daghang mga Pariseo ug mga Saduseo ang nangadto aron sa pagpabautismo. Miingon siya kanila, “Kamo nga mga kaliwat sa mga bitin! Kinsa ang nagaingon kaninyo nga makalingkawas kamo gikan sa silot sa Dios nga hapit na moabot? 8 Kon tinuod nga naghinulsol na kamo sa inyong mga sala, pamatud-i ninyo kini pinaagi sa inyong mga binuhatan. 9 Ayaw kamo pag-ingon nga dili kamo silotan tungod kay mga kaliwat kamo ni Abraham. Kay bisan gani kining mga bato mahimong himuon sa Dios nga mga anak ni Abraham. 10 Timan-i ninyo kini: ang atsa andam na aron iputol sa punoan sa mga kahoy. Ang matag kahoy nga wala mamunga ug maayong bunga putlon ug ilabay sa kalayo.”
11 “Ako nagabautismo kaninyo sa tubig sa pagpaila nga naghinulsol na kamo sa inyong mga sala, apan may moabot sunod kanako nga mas gamhanan pa kay kanako ug dili gani ako takos nga mahimong iyang sulugoon.[b] Siya magbautismo kaninyo sa Espiritu Santo ug sa kalayo. 12 Sama siya sa tawo nga nagapalid sa iyang giani aron ilain ang timgas gikan sa tahop. Ang timgas ibutang niya sa bodega, apan ang tahop sunogon niya sa kalayo nga dili gayod mapalong.”

13 Unya, migikan si Jesus sa Galilea ug miadto kang Juan didto sa Suba sa Jordan aron magpabautismo. 14 Dili unta mobautismo si Juan kaniya, kay matod niya, “Nganong magpabautismo ka kanako? Ako man gani ang kinahanglan magpabautismo kanimo.” 15 Apan miingon si Jesus kaniya, “Sige lang, tungod kay mao kini ang angay natong buhaton aron matuman ang pagbuot sa Dios.” Busa misugot si Juan ug gibautismohan niya si Jesus. 16 Sa dihang nabautismohan na si Jesus, mikawas siya sa tubig. Unya naabli ang langit ug nakita ni Jesus ang Espiritu sa Dios nga mikunsad kaniya sama sa salampati. 17 Ug may nadungog nga tingog gikan sa langit nga nagaingon, “Mao kini ang akong hinigugmang Anak. Nalipay gayod ako kaniya.”

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
