³³ “You snakes! You brood of vipers!^(A) How will you escape being condemned to hell?^(B)

⁴³ If your hand causes you to stumble,^(A) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,^(B) where the fire never goes out.^{(C) [44] [a] 45} And if your foot causes you to stumble,^(D) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.^{(E) [46] [b] 47} And if your eye causes you to stumble,^(F) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,^(G)

²² “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. ²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. ²⁴ So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,^(A) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’^(B)

⁶ The tongue also is a fire,^(A) a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,^(B) sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.^(C)

⁴ For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,^(A) but sent them to hell,^[a] putting them in chains of darkness^[b] to be held for judgment;^(B)
