19 Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, He left Galilee and went into the part of Judea that is beyond the Jordan;

And great throngs accompanied Him, and He cured them there.

And Pharisees came to Him and put Him to the test by asking, Is it lawful and right to dismiss and repudiate and divorce one’s wife for any and [a]every cause?

He replied, Have you never read that He Who made them from the beginning made them male and female,

And said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be united firmly (joined inseparably) to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?(A)

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder (separate).

They said to Him, Why then did Moses command [us] to give a certificate of divorce and thus to dismiss and repudiate a wife?(B)

He said to them, Because of the hardness (stubbornness and perversity) of your hearts Moses permitted you to dismiss and repudiate and divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been [b]so [ordained].

I say to you: whoever dismisses (repudiates, divorces) his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery, [c]and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

10 The disciples said to Him, If the case of a man with his wife is like this, it is neither profitable nor advisable to marry.

11 But He said to them, Not all men can accept this saying, but it is for those to whom [the capacity to receive] it has been given.

12 For there are eunuchs who have been born incapable of marriage; and there are eunuchs who have been made so by men; and there are eunuchs who have made themselves incapable of marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let him who is able to accept this accept it.

13 Then little children were brought to Jesus, that He might put His hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them.

14 But He said, Leave the children alone! Allow the little ones to come to Me, and do not forbid or restrain or hinder them, for of such [as these] is the kingdom of heaven composed.

15 And He put His hands upon them, and then went on His way.

16 And behold, there came a man up to Him, saying, Teacher, what excellent and perfectly and essentially good deed must I do to possess eternal life?(C)

17 And He said to him, Why do you ask Me about the perfectly and essentially good? There is only One Who is good [perfectly and essentially]—God. If you would enter into the Life, you must continually keep the commandments.

18 He said to Him, What [d]sort of commandments? [Or, which ones?] And Jesus answered, You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness,(D)

19 Honor your father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as [you do] yourself.(E)

20 The young man said, I have observed all these from my youth; what still do I lack?

21 Jesus answered him, If you would be perfect [that is, [e]have that spiritual maturity which accompanies self-sacrificing character], go and sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; and come, [f]be My disciple [side with My party and follow Me].

22 But when the young man heard this, he went away sad (grieved and in much distress), for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus said to His disciples, Truly I say to you, it will be difficult for a rich man to get into the kingdom of heaven.

24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go into the kingdom of heaven.

25 When the disciples heard this, they were utterly puzzled (astonished, bewildered), saying, Who then can be saved [[g]from eternal death]?

26 But Jesus looked at them and said, With men this is impossible, but all things are possible with God.(F)

27 Then Peter answered Him, saying, Behold, we have left [our] all and have become [h]Your disciples [sided with Your party and followed You]. What then shall we receive?

28 Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, in the new age [the [i]Messianic rebirth of the world], when the Son of Man shall sit down on the throne of His glory, you who have [become My disciples, sided with My party and] followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 And anyone and everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for My name’s sake will receive [j]many [even a hundred] times more and will inherit eternal life.

30 But many who [now] are first will be last [then], and many who [now] are last will be first [then].

19 Daarna vertrok Jezus uit Galilea. Hij stak de Jordaan over en ging naar Judea. Grote groepen mensen volgden Hem en Hij genas alle mensen die ziek waren.

Er kwamen Farizeeërs naar Hem toe, om Hem een strikvraag te stellen. Ze hoopten dat Hij iets verkeerds zou zeggen. Ze vroegen: "Mag iemand van zijn vrouw scheiden, om wat voor reden dan ook?" Hij antwoordde: "Hebben jullie niet gelezen dat hun Maker hen vanaf het begin van de wereld als man en vrouw heeft gemaakt? God zei toen: 'Daarom zal een man weggaan bij zijn vader en moeder en van zijn vrouw houden en trouw aan haar zijn. Vanaf dan zijn ze niet meer twee aparte mensen, maar samen één geheel.' Wat God zo tot één geheel heeft gemaakt, zou een mens niet meer uit elkaar moeten halen." Toen zeiden de Farizeeërs tegen Hem: "Waarom heeft Mozes dan gezegd dat een man zijn vrouw mag wegsturen als hij haar een brief meegeeft waarin staat dat hij van haar gescheiden is?" Jezus zei tegen hen: "Mozes heeft gezegd dat jullie je vrouw mogen wegsturen, omdat hij wist dat jullie hard zijn. Maar vanaf het begin was dat niet de bedoeling. Maar Ik zeg jullie: je mag alleen met een andere vrouw trouwen, als je je vrouw hebt weggestuurd omdat ze met een andere man naar bed is geweest. Als je haar om een andere reden wegstuurt en hertrouwt, ben je ontrouw aan haar. En de man die met de weggestuurde vrouw trouwt, maakt dat zij ontrouw is aan haar eerste man."[a]

10 Toen zeiden de leerlingen tegen Hem: "Als het zo zit, kun je maar beter niet trouwen." 11 Maar Hij zei tegen hen: "Niet iedereen begrijpt wat Ik nu ga zeggen. Je begrijpt het alleen als God je daarbij helpt. 12 Sommige mensen trouwen niet omdat ze onvruchtbaar zijn geboren. Anderen trouwen niet omdat mensen hen onvruchtbaar hebben gemaakt. Weer anderen trouwen niet omdat ze er zelf voor kiezen om onvruchtbaar te blijven en geen kinderen te krijgen. Ze kiezen daarvoor vanwege Gods Koninkrijk. Probeer dit te begrijpen."

Jezus zegent de kinderen

13 De mensen brachten hun kleine kinderen naar Jezus toe. Ze wilden dat Hij hun de handen op zou leggen en voor ze zou bidden. Maar de leerlingen stuurden hen weg. 14 Maar Jezus zei: "Laat die kinderen met rust. Laat ze naar Mij toe komen en houd ze niet tegen! Want het Koninkrijk van God is voor mensen zoals zij." 15 En Hij zegende de kinderen. Daarna reisde Hij verder.

De rijke man

16 Er kwam iemand naar Jezus toe die vroeg: "Goede Meester, wat voor goeds moet ik doen om het eeuwige leven te krijgen?" 17 Jezus zei tegen de man: "Waarom noem je Mij 'goed'? Er is er maar Eén die goed is, en dat is God. Maar als je het eeuwige leven wil krijgen, moet je je altijd aan de wetten van Mozes houden." 18 De man vroeg: "Aan welke wetten daarvan?" Jezus antwoordde: "Deze. Dood niemand. Wees trouw aan je vrouw. Steel niet. Vertel geen leugens over anderen. 19 Heb respect voor je vader en moeder en zorg voor hen. En houd net zoveel van je broeders als van jezelf."[b] 20 De jongeman zei tegen Hem: "Daar heb ik me mijn hele leven aan gehouden. Wat moet ik verder nog doen?" 21 Jezus zei: "Als je volmaakt wil zijn, ga dan naar huis, verkoop alles wat je hebt en geef het geld aan de arme mensen. Dan zul je een schat in de hemel hebben. Kom dan hier en volg Mij." 22 Toen de man dit hoorde, ging hij verdrietig naar huis. Want hij was erg rijk.

23 Jezus zei tegen zijn leerlingen: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat het voor rijke mensen moeilijk is om het Koninkrijk van God binnen te gaan. 24 Ja, het is gemakkelijker voor een kameel om door het oog van een naald te kruipen, dan voor een rijk mens om het Koninkrijk van God binnen te gaan." 25 Toen de leerlingen dat hoorden, werden ze er ongerust van. Ze vroegen: "Wie kan er dan worden gered?" 26 Jezus keek hen aan en zei: "Bij mensen is dat onmogelijk, maar bij God is alles mogelijk."

Wat is de beloning voor het volgen van Jezus?

27 Toen zei Petrus tegen Hem: "Heer, wíj hebben alles achtergelaten wat we hadden en zijn U gevolgd. Wat voor beloning zullen we daarvoor krijgen?" 28 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie: op een dag zal alles nieuw gemaakt worden. Ik zal dan op mijn hemelse troon zitten. Omdat jullie Mij zijn gevolgd, zullen jullie dan ook op twaalf tronen zitten. Jullie zullen rechters zijn over de twaalf stammen van Israël. 29 En als je je huis of broers of zussen of vader of moeder of vrouw of kinderen of akkers hebt achtergelaten om Mij te volgen, zul je er heel veel meer terugkrijgen. Ook zul je het eeuwige leven krijgen. 30 Maar veel mensen die nu het eerst zijn, zullen straks het laatst zijn. En veel mensen die nu het laatst zijn, zullen straks het eerst zijn."

The King Leaves Galilee For Judea. Large Crowds Follow Him And He Heals Them

19 And it came about that when Jesus finished[a] these words, He went-away from Galilee and came into the districts[b] of Judea, beyond the Jordan. And large crowds followed Him, and He cured them there.

The Pharisees Test Jesus With a Question About Divorce. Divorce Is Not God’s Will

And Pharisees came to Him— testing Him, and saying, “Is it lawful for a man[c] to send-away[d] his wife for any reason[e]?” And the One, having responded, said, “Did you not read [in Gen 1:27] that the One having created from the beginning[f] ‘made them male and female’? And He said [in Gen 2:24], ‘For this reason[g] a man will leave-behind his father and his mother and will be joined[h] to his wife. And the two will be one flesh’. So then, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God paired-together[i], let a person[j] not separate”. They say to Him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate[k] of divorce and send her away?” He says to them that “Moses permitted[l] you to send-away your wives because of your hardness-of-heart. But from the beginning it has not been so[m]. And I say to you that whoever sends-away his wife not based on sexual-immorality, and marries another, is committing-adultery”.

The Disciples Conclude It Is Better Not To Marry. Jesus Says This Is Right For Some

10 His disciples say to Him, “If the case of the man with the wife is like this, it is not expedient[n] to marry!” 11 But the One said to them, “Not all give-way-to[o] this statement, but [only] ones to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs[p] who were born thus from a mother’s womb. And there are eunuchs who were made-eunuchs by people. And there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of the heavens. Let the one being able to give way, give way”.

Don’t Forbid The Children To Come To Me. Of Such Is The Kingdom of God

13 Then children were brought to Him in order that He might lay His hands on them and pray. But the disciples rebuked them[q]. 14 But Jesus said, “Permit[r] the children, and do not be forbidding them to come to Me. For the kingdom of the heavens is of [s] such ones”. 15 And having laid His hands on them, He proceeded from there.

A Rich Man Asks What To Do To Enter Heaven. Jesus Says, Sell Everything And Follow Me

16 And behold— one having come to Him said, “Teacher, what good thing should I do in order that I may have eternal life?” 17 And the One said to him, “Why do you ask Me about what is good? There is One Who is good. But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments”. 18 He says to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder. You shall not commit-adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give-false-testimony. 19 Be honoring your father and your mother”. And, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself ”. 20 The young man says to Him, “I kept all these things. What am I still lacking?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect[t], go, sell your possessions and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in the heavens. And come, be following Me”. 22 But having heard the statement, the young man went away grieving. For he was having many properties.

It Is Hard For The Rich To Enter. But All Who Leave Anything Will Inherit More

23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you that a rich one will enter with-difficulty into the kingdom of the heavens. 24 And again I say to you, it is easier that a camel go through a hole of a needle[u] than[v] that a rich one enter into the kingdom of God”. 25 And having heard it, the disciples were extremely astounded, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 And having looked at them, Jesus said to them, “With humans, this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible”. 27 Then Peter, having responded, said to Him, “Behold— we left everything and followed You. What then will there be for us?” 28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you that you, the ones having followed Me— at the regeneration[w] when the Son of Man sits on the throne[x] of His glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging[y] the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for the sake of My name will receive a hundred-fold[z], and will inherit eternal life.

The First In This World Will Be Last And The Last Will Be First

30 “But many first[aa] ones will be last, and last ones, first.
