Matthew 16:21-17:13
1599 Geneva Bible
21 ¶ [a]From that time forth Jesus began to show unto his disciples, that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the [b]Elders, and of the high Priests, and Scribes, and be slain and be raised again the third day.
22 Then Peter [c]took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, Master, pity thyself: this shall not be unto thee.
23 [d]Then he turned back, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, [e]Satan: thou art an offence unto me, because thou [f]understandest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.
24 [g]Jesus then said to his disciples, (A)If any man will follow me, let him forsake himself: and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For (B)whosoever will save his life, shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, shall [h]find it.
26 (C)For what shall it profit a man though he should win the whole world, if he lose his own soul? or what shall a man give for recompense of his soul?
27 For the son of man shall come [i]in the glory of his Father with his Angels, and (D)then shall he give to every man according to his deeds.
28 (E)Verily I say unto you, there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the Son of man come in his [j]kingdom.
17 2 The transfiguration of Christ. 5 Christ ought to be heard. 12 Elijah. 13 John Baptist. 17 The unbelief of the Apostles. 20 The power of faith. 21 Prayer and fasting. 22 Christ foretelleth his passion. 24 He payeth tribute.
1 And (F)[k][l]after six days, Jesus took Peter and James, and John his brother, and brought them up into an high mountain apart,
2 And was [m]transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the Sun, and his clothes were as white as the light.
3 And behold, there appeared unto them Moses, and Elijah, talking with him.
4 Then answered Peter, and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud shadowed them: and behold, there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, (G) This is [n]that my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear him.
6 And when the disciples heard that, they [o]fell on their faces, and were sore afraid.
7 Then Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.
8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.
9 ¶ And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Show the [p]vision to no man, until the Son of man rise again from the dead.
10 (H)And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the Scribes that (I) Elijah must first come?
11 And Jesus answered, and said unto them, Certainly Elijah must first come, and restore all things.
12 But I say unto you, that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they would: likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples perceived that he spake unto them of John Baptist.
