15 Some Pharisees and other Jewish leaders now arrived from Jerusalem to interview Jesus.
2 “Why do your disciples disobey the ancient Jewish traditions?” they demanded. “For they ignore our ritual of ceremonial handwashing before they eat.” 3 He replied, “And why do your traditions violate the direct commandments of God? 4 For instance, God’s law is ‘Honor your father and mother; anyone who reviles his parents must die.’ 5-6 But you say, ‘Even if your parents are in need, you may give their support money to the church[a] instead.’ And so, by your man-made rule, you nullify the direct command of God to honor and care for your parents. 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, 8 ‘These people say they honor me, but their hearts are far away. 9 Their worship is worthless, for they teach their man-made laws instead of those from God.’[b]”
10 Then Jesus called to the crowds and said, “Listen to what I say and try to understand: 11
12 Then the disciples came and told him, “You offended the Pharisees by that remark.”
13-14 Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my Father shall be rooted up, so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and both will fall into a ditch.”
15 Then Peter asked Jesus to explain what he meant when he said that people are not defiled by nonkosher food.
16 “Don’t you understand?” Jesus asked him. 17 “Don’t you see that anything you eat passes through the digestive tract and out again? 18 But evil words come from an evil heart and defile the man who says them. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile; but there is no spiritual defilement from eating without first going through the ritual of ceremonial handwashing!”
21 Jesus then left that part of the country and walked the fifty miles to Tyre and Sidon.[d]
22 A woman from Canaan who was living there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, King David’s Son! For my daughter has a demon within her, and it torments her constantly.”
23 But Jesus gave her no reply—not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to get going,” they said, “for she is bothering us with all her begging.”
24 Then he said to the woman, “I was sent to help the Jews—the lost sheep of Israel—not the Gentiles.”
25 But she came and worshiped him and pled again, “Sir, help me!”
26 “It doesn’t seem right to take bread from the children and throw it to the dogs,” he said.
27 “Yes, it is!” she replied, “for even the puppies beneath the table are permitted to eat the crumbs that fall.”
28 “Woman,” Jesus told her, “your faith is large, and your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed right then.
29 Jesus now returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat there. 30 And a vast crowd brought him their lame, blind, maimed, and those who couldn’t speak, and many others, and laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. 31 What a spectacle it was! Those who hadn’t been able to say a word before were talking excitedly, and those with missing arms and legs had new ones; the crippled were walking and jumping around, and those who had been blind were gazing about them! The crowds just marveled and praised the God of Israel.
32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I pity these people—they’ve been here with me for three days now and have nothing left to eat; I don’t want to send them away hungry or they will faint along the road.”
33 The disciples replied, “And where would we get enough here in the desert for all this mob to eat?”
34 Jesus asked them, “How much food do you have?” And they replied, “Seven loaves of bread and a few small fish!”
35 Then Jesus told all of the people to sit down on the ground, 36 and he took the seven loaves and the fish, and gave thanks to God for them, and divided them into pieces, and gave them to the disciples who presented them to the crowd. 37-38 And everyone ate until full—four thousand men besides the women and children! And afterwards, when the scraps were picked up, there were seven basketfuls left over!
39 Then Jesus sent the people home and got into the boat and crossed to Magadan.

Traditions and Commandments

(F)For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, (G)‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, (H)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”[a] 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have (I)made void the word[b] of God. 7 (J)You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8 (K)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as (L)doctrines the commandments of men.’”
What Defiles a Person
10 And he called the people to him and said to them, (M)“Hear and understand: 11 (N)it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were (O)offended when they heard this saying?” 13 He answered, (P)“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted (Q)will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; (R)they are blind guides.[c] And (S)if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 But Peter said to him, (T)“Explain the parable to us.” 16 And he said, (U)“Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that (V)whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled?[d] 18 But (W)what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come (X)evil thoughts, (Y)murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, (Z)slander. 20 (AA)These are what defile a person. But (AB)to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
21 (AC)And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, (AD)a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, (AE)“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, (AF)“Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24 He answered, (AG)“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and (AH)knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and (AI)throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat (AJ)the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, (AK)great is your faith! (AL)Let it be done for you as you desire.” (AM)And her daughter was (AN)healed instantly.[e]
Jesus Heals Many
29 (AO)Jesus went on from there and walked (AP)beside the Sea of Galilee. And he (AQ)went up on the mountain and sat down there. 30 And great crowds came to him, bringing with them (AR)the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, 31 (AS)so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, (AT)the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And (AU)they glorified (AV)the God of Israel.
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
32 (AW)Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, (AX)“I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” 34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, (AY)“Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, and (AZ)having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And (BA)they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of (BB)Magadan.

Poiché non si lavano le mani quando prendono cibo!». 3 Ed egli rispose loro: «Perché voi trasgredite il comandamento di Dio in nome della vostra tradizione? 4 Dio ha detto:
Onora il padre e la madre
e inoltre:
Chi maledice il padre e la madre sia messo a morte.
5 Invece voi asserite: Chiunque dice al padre o alla madre: Ciò con cui ti dovrei aiutare è offerto a Dio, 6 non è più tenuto a onorare suo padre o sua madre. Così avete annullato la parola di Dio in nome della vostra tradizione. 7 Ipocriti! Bene ha profetato di voi Isaia, dicendo:
8 Questo popolo mi onora con le labbra
ma il suo cuore è lontano da me.
9 Invano essi mi rendono culto,
insegnando dottrine che sono precetti di uomini».
Insegnamento sul puro e sull'impuro
10 Poi riunita la folla disse: «Ascoltate e intendete! 11 Non quello che entra nella bocca rende impuro l'uomo, ma quello che esce dalla bocca rende impuro l'uomo!».
12 Allora i discepoli gli si accostarono per dirgli: «Sai che i farisei si sono scandalizzati nel sentire queste parole?». 13 Ed egli rispose: «Ogni pianta che non è stata piantata dal mio Padre celeste sarà sradicata. 14 Lasciateli! Sono ciechi e guide di ciechi. E quando un cieco guida un altro cieco, tutti e due cadranno in un fosso!». 15 Pietro allora gli disse: «Spiegaci questa parabola». 16 Ed egli rispose: «Anche voi siete ancora senza intelletto? 17 Non capite che tutto ciò che entra nella bocca, passa nel ventre e va a finire nella fogna? 18 Invece ciò che esce dalla bocca proviene dal cuore. Questo rende immondo l'uomo. 19 Dal cuore, infatti, provengono i propositi malvagi, gli omicidi, gli adultèri, le prostituzioni, i furti, le false testimonianze, le bestemmie. 20 Queste sono le cose che rendono immondo l'uomo, ma il mangiare senza lavarsi le mani non rende immondo l'uomo».
Guarigione della figlia di una Cananèa
21 Partito di là, Gesù si diresse verso le parti di Tiro e Sidone. 22 Ed ecco una donna Cananèa, che veniva da quelle regioni, si mise a gridare: «Pietà di me, Signore, figlio di Davide. Mia figlia è crudelmente tormentata da un demonio». 23 Ma egli non le rivolse neppure una parola.
Allora i discepoli gli si accostarono implorando: «Esaudiscila, vedi come ci grida dietro». 24 Ma egli rispose: «Non sono stato inviato che alle pecore perdute della casa di Israele». 25 Ma quella venne e si prostrò dinanzi a lui dicendo: «Signore, aiutami!». 26 Ed egli rispose: «Non è bene prendere il pane dei figli per gettarlo ai cagnolini». 27 «E' vero, Signore, disse la donna, ma anche i cagnolini si cibano delle briciole che cadono dalla tavola dei loro padroni». 28 Allora Gesù le replicò: «Donna, davvero grande è la tua fede! Ti sia fatto come desideri». E da quell'istante sua figlia fu guarita.
Molte guarigioni presso il lago
29 Allontanatosi di là, Gesù giunse presso il mare di Galilea e, salito sul monte, si fermò là. 30 Attorno a lui si radunò molta folla recando con sé zoppi, storpi, ciechi, sordi e molti altri malati; li deposero ai suoi piedi, ed egli li guarì. 31 E la folla era piena di stupore nel vedere i muti che parlavano, gli storpi raddrizzati, gli zoppi che camminavano e i ciechi che vedevano. E glorificava il Dio di Israele.
Seconda moltiplicazione dei pani
32 Allora Gesù chiamò a sé i discepoli e disse: «Sento compassione di questa folla: ormai da tre giorni mi vengono dietro e non hanno da mangiare. Non voglio rimandarli digiuni, perché non svengano lungo la strada». 33 E i discepoli gli dissero: «Dove potremo noi trovare in un deserto tanti pani da sfamare una folla così grande?». 34 Ma Gesù domandò: «Quanti pani avete?». Risposero: «Sette, e pochi pesciolini». 35 Dopo aver ordinato alla folla di sedersi per terra, 36 Gesù prese i sette pani e i pesci, rese grazie, li spezzò, li dava ai discepoli, e i discepoli li distribuivano alla folla. 37 Tutti mangiarono e furono saziati. Dei pezzi avanzati portarono via sette sporte piene. 38 Quelli che avevano mangiato erano quattromila uomini, senza contare le donne e i bambini. 39 Congedata la folla, Gesù salì sulla barca e andò nella regione di Magadàn.

That Which Defiles(A)
15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(B)
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[a](C) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[b](D) 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(E)’[c](F)”

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(U)
25 The woman came and knelt before him.(V) “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(W) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”
34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them(AD) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(AE) 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
