Matthew 11

11 And when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.
Messengers from John the Baptist
2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?”[a] 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”
Jesus Praises John the Baptist
7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 Why then did you go out? To see a man[b] clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings’ houses. 9 Why then did you go out? To see a prophet?[c] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written,
‘Behold, I send my messenger before thy face,
who shall prepare thy way before thee.’
11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,[d] and men of violence take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John; 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Eli′jah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear,[e] let him hear.
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates,
17 ‘We piped to you, and you did not dance;
we wailed, and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; 19 the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”[f]
Woes to Unrepentant Cities
20 Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chora′zin! woe to you, Beth-sa′ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Caper′na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”
Jesus Thanks His Father
25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; 26 yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.[g] 27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.[h] 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

- 11.3 The Baptist expected more obvious signs of the Messiah. By quoting the prophet Isaiah, Jesus showed that he was indeed inaugurating the Messianic kingdom—but by doing good rather than by glorious manifestations or sudden punishments.

11 耶稣嘱咐完十二个门徒,就离开那里,到附近的城镇传道和教导人。
2 约翰在监狱中听到基督所做的事,就差两个门徒去问祂: 3 “你就是那位我们所等候的救主吗?还是我们要等别人呢?”
4 耶稣回答说:“你们回去把所见所闻告诉约翰, 5 就是瞎子看见,瘸子走路,麻风病人得洁净,聋子听见,死人复活,穷人听到福音。 6 凡对我没有失去信心的人有福了!”
7 他们离开后,耶稣对众人谈起约翰,说:“你们从前去旷野要看什么呢?看随风摇动的芦苇吗? 8 如果不是,你们到底想看什么?是看穿绫罗绸缎的人吗?那些穿绫罗绸缎的人生活在王宫里。 9 你们究竟想看什么?看先知吗?是的,我告诉你们,他不只是先知。 10 圣经上说,‘看啊,我要差遣我的使者在你前面为你预备道路’,这里所指的就是约翰。 11 我实在告诉你们,凡妇人所生的,没有一个兴起来比施洗者约翰大,然而天国里最微不足道的也比他大。

20 那时,耶稣开始责备一些城镇,因为祂在那里行了许多神迹,当地的居民仍不肯悔改。 21 祂说:“哥拉汛啊,你大祸临头了!伯赛大啊,你大祸临头了!我在你们当中所行的神迹,如果行在泰尔和西顿,那里的人早就身披麻衣,头蒙灰尘,悔改了。 22 所以我告诉你们,在审判之日,你们将比泰尔和西顿受更重的刑罚!
23 “迦百农啊,你将被提升到天上吗?不!你将被打落到阴间。因为若把在你那里所行的神迹行在所多玛,它肯定会存留到今天。 24 所以我告诉你们,在审判之日,你们将比所多玛受更重的刑罚!”
劳苦者得安息
25 那时,耶稣说:“父啊,天地的主,我颂赞你,因为你把这些事向聪明、有学问的人隐藏起来,却启示给像孩童一般的人。 26 父啊,是的,这正是你的美意。 27 我父将一切交给了我。除了父,没有人认识子;除了子和受子启示的人,没有人认识父。
28 “所有劳苦困乏、背负重担的人啊,到我这里来吧!我要赐给你们安息。 29 我心柔和谦卑,你们要负我的轭,向我学习,这样你们的心灵必得享安息。 30 因为我的轭容易负,我的担子很轻省。”

11 When Jesus had finished giving these instructions to his twelve disciples, he went off preaching in the cities where they were scheduled to go.[a]
2 John the Baptist, who was now in prison, heard about all the miracles the Messiah was doing, so he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, 3 “Are you really the one we are waiting for, or shall we keep on looking?”
4 Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him about the miracles you’ve seen me do— 5 the blind people I’ve healed, and the lame people now walking without help, and the cured lepers, and the deaf who hear, and the dead raised to life; and tell him about my preaching the Good News to the poor. 6 Then give him this message, ‘Blessed are those who don’t doubt me.’”
7 When John’s disciples had gone, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “When you went out into the barren wilderness to see John, what did you expect him to be like? Grass blowing in the wind? 8 Or were you expecting to see a man dressed as a prince in a palace? 9 Or a prophet of God? Yes, and he is more than just a prophet. 10 For John is the man mentioned in the Scriptures—a messenger to precede me, to announce my coming, and prepare people to receive me.[b]
11 “Truly, of all men ever born, none shines more brightly than John the Baptist. And yet, even the lesser lights in the Kingdom of Heaven will be greater than he is! 12 And from the time John the Baptist began preaching and baptizing until now, ardent multitudes have been crowding toward the Kingdom of Heaven,[c] 13 for all the laws and prophets looked forward to the Messiah.[d] Then John appeared, 14 and if you are willing to understand what I mean, he is Elijah, the one the prophets said would come at the time the Kingdom begins.[e] 15 If ever you were willing to listen, listen now!
16 “What shall I say about this nation? These people are like children playing, who say to their little friends, 17 ‘We played wedding and you weren’t happy, so we played funeral but you weren’t sad.’ 18 For John the Baptist doesn’t even drink wine and often goes without food, and you say, ‘He’s crazy.’[f] 19 And I, the Messiah,[g] feast and drink, and you complain that I am ‘a glutton and a drinking man, and hang around with the worst sort of sinners!’ But brilliant men like you can justify your every inconsistency!”
20 Then he began to pour out his denunciations against the cities where he had done most of his miracles, because they hadn’t turned to God.
21 “Woe to you, Chorazin, and woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in your streets had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon,[h] their people would have repented long ago in shame and humility. 22 Truly, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on the Judgment Day than you! 23 And Capernaum, though highly honored,[i] shall go down to hell! For if the marvelous miracles I did in you had been done in Sodom, it would still be here today. 24 Truly, Sodom will be better off at the Judgment Day than you.”
25 And Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding the truth from those who think themselves so wise, and for revealing it to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for it pleased you to do it this way! . . .
27 “Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. Only the Father knows the Son, and the Father is known only by the Son and by those to whom the Son reveals him. 28 Come to me and I will give you rest—all of you who work so hard beneath a heavy yoke. 29-30 Wear my yoke—for it fits perfectly—and let me teach you; for I am gentle and humble, and you shall find rest for your souls; for I give you only light burdens.”
