Commissioning the Twelve
10 Summoning his twelve disciples,(A) he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every[a] disease and sickness.[b](B) 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles:(C) First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;[c] 4 Simon the Zealot,[d] and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.(D)
5 Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions: “Don’t take the road that leads to the Gentiles, and don’t enter any Samaritan(E) town. 6 Instead, go to the lost sheep(F) of the house of Israel.(G) 7 As you go, proclaim, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’(H) 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy,[e] drive out demons.(I) Freely you received, freely give. 9 Don’t acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts.(J) 10 Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker(K) is worthy of his food. 11 When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12 Greet a household when you enter it,(L) 13 and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.(M) 14 If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet(N) when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment(O) for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.(P)
Persecutions Predicted
16 “Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.(Q) 17 Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts[f] and flog you in their synagogues.(R) 18 You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.(S) 19 But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak.(T) For you will be given what to say at that hour, 20 because it isn’t you speaking, but the Spirit(U) of your Father is speaking through you.(V)
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.(W) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of my name.(X) But the one who endures to the end will be saved.(Y) 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.(Z) For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. 24 A disciple[g] is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.(AA) 25 It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house ‘Beelzebul,’ how much more the members of his household!(AB)
Fear God
26 “Therefore,(AC) don’t be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered and nothing hidden that won’t be made known.(AD) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper,[h] proclaim on the housetops.(AE) 28 Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; (AF) rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.(AG) 29 Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny?[i] Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s(AH) consent.[j] 30 But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)
Acknowledging Christ
32 “Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.(AK) 33 But whoever denies me before others,(AL) I will also deny him before my Father in heaven. 34 Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.(AM) 35 For I came to turn
a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
36 and a man’s enemies will be
the members of his household.[k](AN)
37 The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; (AO) the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Anyone who finds his life will lose it,(AP) and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.(AQ)
A Cup of Cold Water
40 “The one who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and the one who welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.(AS) 41 Anyone who welcomes a prophet(AT) because he is a prophet[l] will receive a prophet’s reward. And anyone who welcomes a righteous person because he’s righteous[m] will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And whoever gives(AU) even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple,[n](AV) truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

L’envoi des Douze(A)
5 Ce sont ces douze hommes que Jésus envoya, après leur avoir fait les recommandations suivantes : N’allez pas dans les contrées étrangères et n’entrez pas dans les villes de la Samarie. 6 Rendez-vous plutôt auprès des brebis perdues du peuple d’Israël. 7 En chemin, annoncez que le royaume[b] des cieux est proche. 8 Guérissez les malades, ressuscitez les morts, rendez purs les lépreux, expulsez les démons.
Vous avez reçu gratuitement, donnez gratuitement. 9 Ne mettez dans vos bourses ni or, ni argent, ni pièce de cuivre. 10 N’emportez pour le voyage ni sac, ni tunique de rechange, ni sandales, ni bâton, car « l’ouvrier mérite sa nourriture ».
11 Chaque fois que vous arriverez dans une ville ou un village, cherchez quelqu’un qui soit respectable[c] et restez chez lui jusqu’à votre départ de la localité. 12 En entrant dans la maison, saluez ses occupants. 13 S’ils en sont dignes, que la paix que vous leur souhaitez repose sur eux[d]. Sinon, qu’elle vous revienne. 14 Si, dans une maison ou dans une ville, on ne veut pas vous recevoir, ni écouter vos paroles, quittez la maison ou la ville en secouant la poussière de vos pieds[e]. 15 Vraiment, je vous l’assure : au jour du jugement, les villes de Sodome et de Gomorrhe[f] seront traitées avec moins de rigueur que les habitants de ces lieux-là.
Les difficultés de la mission(B)
16 Voici : moi, je vous envoie comme des brebis au milieu des loups. Soyez prudents comme des serpents et innocents comme des colombes. 17 Soyez sur vos gardes ; car on vous traduira devant les tribunaux des Juifs et l’on vous fera fouetter dans leurs synagogues.
18 On vous forcera à comparaître devant des gouverneurs et des rois à cause de moi pour leur apporter un témoignage, ainsi qu’aux non-Juifs. 19 Lorsqu’on vous livrera aux autorités, ne vous inquiétez ni du contenu ni de la forme de ce que vous direz, car cela vous sera donné au moment même. 20 En effet, ce n’est pas vous qui parlerez, ce sera l’Esprit de votre Père qui parlera par votre bouche.
21 Le frère livrera son propre frère pour le faire condamner à mort, et le père livrera son enfant. Des enfants se dresseront contre leurs parents et les feront mettre à mort. 22 Tout le monde vous haïra à cause de moi. Mais celui qui tiendra bon jusqu’au bout sera sauvé.
23 Si l’on vous persécute dans une ville, fuyez dans une autre ; vraiment, je vous l’assure : vous n’achèverez pas le tour des villes d’Israël avant que le Fils de l’homme vienne.
24 Le disciple n’est pas plus grand que celui qui l’enseigne, ni le serviteur supérieur à son maître. 25 Il suffit au disciple d’être comme celui qui l’enseigne et au serviteur d’être comme son maître. S’ils ont traité le maître de la maison de Béelzébul[g], que diront-ils de ceux qui font partie de cette maison ?
Prendre courage pour la mission(C)
26 N’ayez donc pas peur de ces gens-là ! Car tout ce qui est tenu secret sera dévoilé, et tout ce qui est caché finira par être connu. 27 Ce que je vous dis en secret, répétez-le en plein jour. Ce qu’on vous chuchote dans le creux de l’oreille, criez-le du haut des toits.
28 Ne craignez donc pas ceux qui peuvent tuer le corps, mais qui n’ont pas le pouvoir de faire mourir l’âme. Craignez plutôt celui qui peut vous faire périr corps et âme dans l’enfer. 29 Ne vend-on pas une paire de moineaux pour un sou ? Et pourtant, pas un seul d’entre eux ne tombe à terre sans le consentement de votre Père. 30 Quant à vous, même les cheveux de votre tête sont tous comptés. 31 N’ayez donc aucune crainte, car vous, vous avez plus de valeur que toute une volée de moineaux.
32 C’est pourquoi, celui qui se déclarera pour moi devant les hommes, je me déclarerai moi aussi pour lui devant mon Père céleste. 33 Mais celui qui aura prétendu ne pas me connaître devant les hommes, je ne le reconnaîtrai pas non plus devant mon Père céleste.

34 Ne croyez pas que je sois venu apporter la paix sur terre : je ne suis pas venu apporter la paix, mais l’épée. 35 Oui, je suis venu opposer le fils à son père, la fille à sa mère, la belle-fille à sa belle-mère : 36 on aura pour ennemis les gens de sa propre famille[h].

37 Celui qui aime son père ou sa mère plus que moi n’est pas digne de moi. Celui qui aime son fils ou sa fille plus que moi n’est pas digne de moi. 38 Et celui qui ne se charge pas de sa croix et ne me suit pas n’est pas digne de moi. 39 Celui qui cherche à sauver sa vie la perdra ; et celui qui aura perdu sa vie à cause de moi la retrouvera.

40 Si quelqu’un vous accueille, c’est moi qu’il accueille. Or celui qui m’accueille, accueille celui qui m’a envoyé. 41 Celui qui accueille un prophète parce qu’il est un prophète recevra la même récompense que le prophète[i]. Et celui qui accueille un juste parce que c’est un juste aura la même récompense que le juste[j]. 42 Si quelqu’un donne à boire, ne serait-ce qu’un verre d’eau fraîche, au plus petit de mes disciples parce qu’il est mon disciple, vraiment, je vous l’assure, il ne perdra pas sa récompense.

10 And summoning his Shneym Asar (Twelve) Talmidim, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach gave to them samchut (authority) over shedim (unclean spirits), so as to cast them out, and samchut (authority) to call forth refuah for every machla and every illness.
2 Now of the Shneym Asar Shlichim, the names are these: first, Shimon, the one being called Kefa, and Andrew his brother, Yaakov Ben Zavdai and Yochanan his brother,
3 Philippos and Bar-Talmai, Toma and Mattityahu the moches, Yaakov Bar-Chalfai and Taddai,
4 Shimon the Zealot and Yehudah from Kriot, who betrayed Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
5 These Shneym Asar (Twelve) did Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach send out with the following directives, saying: In the Derech HaGoyim (Way of the Gentiles, Gentile territory) do not go, and do not enter into any Shomron town,
6 but go rather to the Seh Oveid Beis Yisroel (the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel).
7 And, while going, preach that the Malchut HaShomayim is imminent and miyad.
8 Heal the cholim, raise the mesim, cleanse the metzoraim (lepers), cast out the shedim; freely you received, freely give.
9 Take neither gold nor silver nor copper for your money belts,
10 nor a schnorrer’s (beggar’s) bag for the road, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff, for the oseh hamelachah (the one doing the work) is worthy of his lechem.
11 And into whichever town or shtetl you enter, inquire who in it is a ben chayil (son of worthiness), and there remain until you leave.
12 And when you enter into the bais (house), give that household your “Shalom!”
13 And if indeed the bais is a bais chayil (a house of worthiness), let your shalom come upon it; but if it is not a bais chayil, let your shalom return to you.
14 And whoever neither receives you nor listens to your divrei [Moshiach], as you are leaving and as you go outside of that bais (house) or city, then let it be NIER CHATZNO (shake out the fold of the robe, i.e., wash ones hands of), shake off the dust of your feet.
15 Omein, I say to you, it will be more tolerable on Yom HaDin (the Day of Judgment) for Sdom and Amora than for that shtetl.
16 Hinei! I send you as kevesim (sheep) in the midst of ze’evim; therefore, have the seichel (intelligence) of nachashim (serpents) and be tamim (faultless) as yonim (doves).
17 And beware of Bnei Adam, for they will deliver you up to the sanhedriyot (local councils, bet din courts) and in their shuls they will subject you to the shot (whip).
18 And before moshelim (governors) and also melachim (kings) you will be led for my sake [for the sake of Moshiach], for an edut (testimony) to them and to the Goyim.
19 But when they deliver you up, do not be of a LEV ROGEZ (anxious heart, DEVARIM 28:65) worried about how or what you are to say; for it will be given to you in that hour what you are to speak.
20 For you are not the ones speaking, but the Ruach Avichem (the Spirit of your Father) is the one speaking in you.
21 And brother will deliver up to death his own brother, even an abba his own yeled. And yeladim will stand up against their horim (parents) and put them to death.
22 And you will be under the sinas chinom (baseless hatred) of kol Bnei Adam on account of my Name; but the one enduring ad es HaKetz (until the End) will receive the Yeshuat Eloheinu (the Salvation of our G-d).
23 But when they persecute you in one shtetl, flee to the other; for, omein, I say to you, by no means will you complete the shtetlach of Eretz Yisroel until the Bias HaMoshiach (Coming of the Moshiach, the Ben HaAdam, DANIEL 7:13).
24 A talmid is not above his Rebbe nor an eved (servant) above his Baal Bayit (master).
25 It is enough for the talmid that he be like his Rebbe, and the eved like his Baal Bayit. If they called the Baal Bayit Baal-zibbul, how much more the anashim (men) in his bais.
26 Therefore, do not fear them; for nothing has been veiled which will not be unveiled; and nothing has been nistar (hidden) which will not be made known.
27 What I say to you in the choshech (darkness), you declare in the ohr (light); and what you hear whispered into your ears, shout, preach, from the rooftops.
28 And do not fear those who kill the basar (flesh), but are unable to kill the nefesh (soul); but rather fear the One who is able to destroy both basar and nefesh in Gehinnom.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for the least valuable copper coin? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from Avichem!
30 But, as far as you are concerned, even the hairs of your rosh have been inventoried.
31 Therefore, al taarotz (do not be afraid)! You are of more value than many sparrows!
32 Therefore, everyone who shall declare publicly the Ani Maamin hoda’ah of me [as Moshiach], before Bnei HaAdam, I will make hoda’ah (acknowledgment) of him before Avi shbaShomayim.
33 But everyone who makes hakhchashah (denial) of me [as Moshiach], I also will make hakhchashah (denial) of him before Avi shbaShomayim.
34 Do not think that I have come to bring shalom al haaretz (peace on the earth); I have not come to bring shalom but a cherev (sword).
35 For I came to divide a man against his Av, and a bat against her Em, and a kallah (bride) against her chamot (mother-in-law, shviger).
36 And the OIYVEI ISH ANSHEI VEITO (the enemies of a man will be the members of his own household, MICHOH 7:6).
37 The one who has more ahavah (love) for a tata (papa) or a mama than for me [Moshiach] is not worthy of me [Moshiach], and the one who has more ahavah (love) for a ben or a bat than me is not worthy of me.
38 The one who does not take up his etz shel hakarav atzmo (tree of selfsacrifice) and follow after me, is not worthy of me.
39 The one who has found his nefesh will lose it; the one who has lost his nefesh for my sake [lemaan Moshiach] will find it.
40 The one who gives the kabbalat panim (welcome) to you gives the Baruch Habah (welcome) to me [to Moshiach], and the one who gives the Baruch Habah to me [Moshiach] gives the Baruch Habah to the One [Elohim HaAv] who sent me.
41 The one who gives the Baruch Habah to a navi (prophet) in the name of a navi will receive the sachar (reward) of a navi, and the one who gives the Baruch Habah to a tzaddik (righteous man) in the name of a tzaddik will receive the sachar of a tzaddik.
42 And whoever in the name of a talmid [of Moshiach] gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones [the least of the talmidim of Moshiach], omein, I say to you, he will by no means lose his sachar.
