¹⁶ Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, ^(A)who is called the ^[a]Messiah.

¹⁷ So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the ^(B)deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the ^(C)deportation to Babylon to the ^[b]Messiah, fourteen generations.

Conception and Birth of Jesus

¹⁸ Now the birth of Jesus the ^[c]Messiah was as follows: when His ^(D)mother Mary had been ^[d]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was ^(E)found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
