¹² And after the deportation to Babylon: ^(A)Jechoniah was the father of ^(B)Shealtiel,^[a] and ^(C)Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, ¹³ and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, ¹⁴ and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, ¹⁵ and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, ¹⁶ and Jacob the father of ^(D)Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.

¹⁷ So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to ^(E)the Christ fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

¹⁸ Now the birth of ^(F)Jesus Christ^[b] took place in this way. ^(G)When his mother Mary had been betrothed^[c] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child ^(H)from the Holy Spirit. ¹⁹ And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling ^(I)to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. ²⁰ But as he considered these things, behold, ^(J)an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ²¹ She will bear a son, and ^(K)you shall call his name Jesus, ^(L)for he will save his people from their sins.” ^22 (M)All this took place ^(N)to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

(which means, God ^(Q)with us). ²⁴ When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,

¹¹ And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, ^(A)they offered him gifts, ^(B)gold and ^(C)frankincense and ^(D)myrrh.

^55 (A)Is not this ^(B)the carpenter's^[a] son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not ^(C)his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
