Het verhaal van de zaaier

13 Diezelfde dag vertrok Jezus van huis en ging bij het meer zitten. 2 Grote groepen mensen kwamen naar Hem toe. Daarom ging Hij in een boot zitten. En Hij sprak vanaf de boot tegen de grote groep mensen die op de kant stond. 3 Hij vertelde hun heel veel dingen in de vorm van verhalen.

Hij zei: "Een zaaier ging zaaien. 4 Een deel van het zaad viel langs de weg. Het werd door de vogels opgegeten. 5 Een ander deel viel op rotsgrond, waar het niet veel aarde had. Daardoor kwam het zaad snel op. 6 Maar toen de zon opkwam, ging het dood. Het verdroogde doordat het haast geen wortels had. 7 Een ander deel viel tussen de distels. Toen de distels opkwamen, verstikten die het. 8 Een ander deel viel in goede aarde en er groeide graan aan: op sommige plaatsen 100 keer zo veel, op sommige plaatsen 60 keer zo veel en op sommige plaatsen 30 keer zo veel als dat er gezaaid was. 9 Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren!"

10 Jezus' leerlingen kwamen Hem vragen: "Waarom vertelt U hun alles in de vorm van verhalen?" 11 Hij antwoordde: "Omdat het de bedoeling is dat júllie de geheimen van het Koninkrijk van God zullen begrijpen, maar zíj niet. 12 Want aan mensen die hebben, zal gegeven worden, en ze zullen heel veel hebben. Maar van mensen die niets hebben, zal afgenomen worden wat ze hebben. 13 Daarom vertel Ik hun alles in de vorm van verhalen. Want ze kijken wel, maar zien niets. En ze luisteren wel, maar horen niets en begrijpen er niets van. 14 Met hen gebeurt wat de profeet Jesaja vroeger al heeft gezegd: 'Jullie oren zullen het wel horen, maar jullie zullen het helemaal niet begrijpen. En jullie ogen kijken wel, maar wat jullie zien zal niet tot jullie doordringen. 15 Want het hart van dit volk is koppig en ongehoorzaam. Want ze luisteren niet met hun oren. En ze houden hun ogen dicht. Want ze willen niet zien en ze willen niet horen. Ze willen niet begrijpen. Zo zullen ze Mij niet geloven. Daardoor kan Ik hen niet genezen.' 16 Maar het is heerlijk voor jullie dat jullie ogen werkelijk zien en dat jullie oren werkelijk horen. 17 Luister goed! Ik zeg jullie dat veel profeten en mensen die leefden zoals God het wil, zouden hebben willen zien wat jullie zien. Maar ze hebben het niet gezien. En ze zouden hebben willen horen wat jullie horen. Maar ze hebben het niet gehoord."

Betekenis van het verhaal van de zaaier

18 Jezus zei: "Luister nu. Ik zal jullie uitleggen wat het verhaal van de zaaier betekent. 19 Als je het goede nieuws van het Koninkrijk van God hoort, maar het niet begrijpt, komt de duivel en steelt wat er in je hart was gezaaid. Dat is het zaad dat langs de weg viel. 20 Er zijn ook mensen die het woord van God horen en het onmiddellijk blij geloven. Dat is het zaad dat op rotsgrond viel. 21 Want het geloof van die mensen heeft geen wortels: hun geloof zit niet diep. Ze geloven wel een tijdje, maar als er problemen en moeilijkheden komen omdat ze het woord geloven, verliezen ze hun geloof. 22 Er zijn ook mensen die het woord horen, maar hun geloof wordt verstikt door de zorgen van de wereld en het verlangen naar geld. Er groeit geen vrucht aan hen. Zij zijn het zaad dat in de distels is gezaaid. 23 Het zaad dat in goede aarde is gevallen, zijn de mensen die het woord horen en begrijpen en aan wie ook vrucht groeit. Bij sommigen 100 keer zo veel, bij sommigen 60 keer zo veel en bij sommigen 30 keer zo veel als dat er gezaaid was."

Het verhaal van het zaad en het onkruid

24 Jezus vertelde hun nog iets in de vorm van een verhaal. Hij zei: "Je kan het Koninkrijk van God vergelijken met een boer die goed zaad had gezaaid in zijn akker. 25 Maar toen de mensen sliepen, kwam zijn vijand. Hij zaaide onkruid over het gezaaide graan heen. Daarna ging hij weg. 26 Toen kwam het graan op en er groeiden graankorrels aan. Maar ook het onkruid kwam tevoorschijn. 27 De knechten gingen naar de boer en zeiden tegen hem: 'U had toch goed zaad op uw akker gezaaid? Hoe kan het dan dat er zoveel onkruid staat?' 28 Hij zei tegen hen: 'Dat heeft een vijand gedaan.' De knechten zeiden tegen hem: 'Wilt u dat we het onkruid eruit trekken?' 29 Hij zei: 'Nee, want als jullie het onkruid eruit trekken, trekken jullie misschien per ongeluk ook het graan eruit. 30 Laat het maar samen opgroeien tot de oogst. Bij het oogsten zal ik tegen de maaiers zeggen: 'Haal eerst het onkruid eruit. Bind het samen tot bossen en verbrand het. Maar breng het graan in mijn schuur.' "

Andere verhalen over het Koninkrijk van God: mosterdzaad en gist

31 Jezus vertelde hun nog meer in de vorm van een verhaal. Hij zei: "Je kan het Koninkrijk van God vergelijken met een mosterdzaadje. Iemand plant dat zaadje in zijn akker. 32 Het is maar een heel klein zaadje. Maar uiteindelijk wordt het een plant die groter is dan alle andere tuinkruiden: het wordt een boom. In die boom kunnen de vogels hun nesten bouwen."

33 Hij vertelde hun nog meer in de vorm van een verhaal: "Je kan het Koninkrijk van God ook vergelijken met een beetje gist dat door een vrouw in een grote hoeveelheid deeg werd gedaan. Door dat kleine beetje gist, gistte al het deeg."

34 Jezus vertelde alles aan de grote groepen mensen in de vorm van verhalen. Hij vertelde hun niets op een andere manier. 35 Zo gebeurde wat een profeet vroeger al had gezegd: 'Ik zal in de vorm van verhalen tot hen spreken. Zo zal Ik bekend maken wat vanaf het begin van de wereld nog geheim gehouden was.'

36 Toen liet Hij alle mensen vertrekken en ging naar huis.

Uitleg van het verhaal van het zaad en het onkruid

Jezus' leerlingen kwamen Hem vragen: "Wilt U ons het verhaal van het onkruid in de akker uitleggen?" 37 Hij antwoordde: "De man die het goede zaad zaait, is de Mensenzoon. 38 De akker is de wereld. Het goede zaad zijn de mensen die bij het Koninkrijk horen. Het onkruid zijn de mensen die bij de duivel horen. 39 De vijand die het onkruid heeft gezaaid, is de duivel. De oogst is de dag dat God een einde aan deze wereld maakt. De maaiers zijn de engelen. 40 Net zoals het onkruid wordt verzameld en verbrand, zo zal het gaan op de dag dat God een einde maakt aan deze wereld. 41 De Mensenzoon zal zijn engelen sturen om uit zijn Koninkrijk alle machten te verzamelen die de mensen ongehoorzaam maken aan God. Ook verzamelen ze de mensen die altijd ongehoorzaam zijn geweest aan God. 42 De engelen zullen hen in de brandende oven gooien. Daar zullen ze huilen en met hun tanden knarsen van spijt. 43 Maar de mensen die hebben geleefd zoals God het wil, zullen stralen als de zon in het Koninkrijk van hun Vader. Als je oren hebt, moet je ook goed luisteren!"

Andere verhalen: de verborgen schat, de parel, het visnet

44 Jezus zei: "Het Koninkrijk van God lijkt ook op een schat die in een akker verborgen lag. Iemand ontdekte dat die schat in die akker lag. Hij vertelde het aan niemand. Maar hij was er heel blij over. Hij ging naar huis, verkocht alles wat hij had en kocht die akker.

45 Het Koninkrijk van God lijkt ook op een koopman die mooie parels zocht. 46 Op een dag vond hij een prachtige, dure parel. Hij ging naar huis, verkocht alles wat hij had en kocht die parel.

47 Het Koninkrijk van God lijkt ook op een visnet dat door de zee wordt gesleept en waarin van alles wordt gevangen. 48 Als het net vol is, trekken de vissers het op de kant. Wat bruikbaar is, verzamelen ze in bakken. Maar wat onbruikbaar is, gooien ze weg. 49 Zo zal het gaan als God een einde maakt aan deze wereld. De engelen zullen op pad gaan en de slechte mensen tussen de goede mensen uit halen. 50 En ze zullen hen in de brandende oven gooien. Daar zullen ze huilen en met hun tanden knarsen van spijt. 51 Begrijpen jullie dit?" Ze antwoordden Hem: "Ja, Heer." 52 Toen zei Hij: "Daarom lijkt iedere wetgeleerde die een leerling is geworden van het Koninkrijk van God, op iemand die uit zijn voorraad oude en nieuwe dingen tevoorschijn haalt."

53 Toen Jezus deze verhalen had verteld, ging Hij daar weg.

De bewoners van Nazaret geloven niet in Jezus

54 Toen Jezus in zijn eigen stad kwam, gaf Hij de mensen les in de synagoge daar. De mensen waren stomverbaasd en zeiden: "Hoe komt Hij toch aan die wijsheid? En hoe kan Hij al die wonderen doen? 55 Hij is toch de zoon van de timmerman? Zijn moeder is toch Maria? Jakobus, Jozef, Simon en Judas zijn toch zijn broers? 56 En zijn zussen wonen toch ook hier bij ons? Waar heeft Hij dat dan allemaal vandaan?" 57 En ze wilden Hem niet geloven. Maar Jezus zei tegen hen: "Alleen in zijn eigen stad en in zijn eigen familie wordt een profeet niet geloofd." 58 En Hij kon daar niet veel wonderen doen, doordat ze Hem niet geloofden.

13 यह घटना उस दिन की है जब येशु घर से बाहर झील के किनारे पर बैठे हुए थे. 2 एक बड़ी भीड़ उनके चारों ओर इकट्ठा हो गयी. इसलिए वह एक नाव में जा बैठे और भीड़ झील के तट पर रह गयी. 3 उन्होंने भीड़ से दृष्टान्तों में अनेक विषयों पर चर्चा की. येशु ने कहा.

“एक किसान बीज बोने के लिए निकला. 4 बीज बोने में कुछ बीज तो मार्ग के किनारे गिरे, जिन्हें पक्षियों ने आ कर चुग लिया. 5 कुछ अन्य बीज पथरीली भूमि पर भी जा गिरे, जहाँ पर्याप्त मिट्टी नहीं थी. पर्याप्त मिट्टी न होने के कारण वे जल्दी ही अंकुरित भी हो गए 6 किन्तु जब सूर्योदय हुआ, वे झुलस गए और इसलिए कि उन्होंने जड़ें ही नहीं पकड़ी थीं, वे मुरझा गए. 7 कुछ अन्य बीज कँटीली झाड़ियों में जा गिरे और झाड़ियों ने बढ़कर उन्हें दबा दिया. 8 कुछ बीज अच्छी भूमि पर गिरे और फल लाए. यह उपज सौ गुणी, साठ गुणी, तीस गुणी थी. 9 जिसके सुनने के कान हों, वह सुन ले.”

10 येशु के शिष्यों ने उनके पास आ कर उनसे प्रश्न किया, “गुरुवर, आप लोगों को दृष्टान्तों में ही शिक्षा क्यों देते हैं?” 11 उसके उत्तर में येशु ने कहा, “स्वर्ग-राज्य के रहस्य जानने की क्षमता तुम्हें तो प्रदान की गई है, उन्हें नहीं. 12 क्योंकि जिस किसी के पास है उसे और अधिक प्रदान किया जाएगा और वह सम्पन्न हो जाएगा किन्तु जिसके पास नहीं है उससे वह भी ले लिया जाएगा, जो उसके पास है. 13 यही कारण है कि मैं लोगों को दृष्टान्तों में शिक्षा देता हूँ:

“क्योंकि वे देखते हुए भी कुछ नहीं देखते तथा
    सुनते हुए भी कुछ नहीं सुनते और
न उन्हें इसका अर्थ ही समझ आता है.

14 उनकी इसी स्थिति के विषय में भविष्यद्वक्ता यशायाह की यह भविष्यवाणी पूरी हो रही है:

“‘तुम सुनते तो रहोगे किन्तु समझोगे नहीं;
    तुम देखते तो रहोगे किन्तु तुम्हें कोई ज्ञान न होगा;
15 क्योंकि इन लोगों का मन-मस्तिष्क मन्द पड़ चुका है.
    वे अपने कानों से ऊँचा ही सुना करते हैं. उन्होंने अपनी आँखें मूंद रखी हैं
    कि कहीं वे अपनी आँखों से देखने न लगें,
    कानों से सुनने न लगें तथा
अपने हृदय से समझने न लगें और मेरी ओर फिर जाएँ कि मैं उन्हें स्वस्थ कर दूँ.’

16 धन्य हैं तुम्हारी आँखें क्योंकि वे देखती हैं और तुम्हारे कान क्योंकि वे सुनते हैं. 17 मैं तुम पर एक सच प्रकट कर रहा हूँ: अनेक भविष्यद्वक्ता और धर्मी व्यक्ति वह देखने की कामना करते रहे, जो तुम देख रहे हो किन्तु वे देख न सके तथा वे वह सुनने की कामना करते रहे, जो तुम सुन रहे हो किन्तु सुन न सके.

18 “अब तुम किसान का दृष्टान्त सुनो: 19 जब कोई व्यक्ति राज्य के विषय में सुनता है किन्तु उसे समझा नहीं करता, शैतान आता है और वह, जो उसके हृदय में रोपा गया है, झपट कर ले जाता है. यह वह है जो मार्ग के किनारे गिर गया था. 20 पथरीली भूमि वह व्यक्ति है, जो सन्देश को सुनता है तथा तुरन्त ही उसे खुशी से अपना लेता है 21 किन्तु इसलिए कि उसकी जड़ है ही नहीं, वह थोड़े दिन के लिए ही उसमें टिक पाता है. जब सन्देश के कारण यातनाएँ और सताहट प्रारम्भ होते हैं, उसका पतन हो जाता है. 22 वह भूमि, जहाँ बीज कँटीली झाड़ियों के बीच गिरा, वह व्यक्ति है जो सन्देश को सुनता तो है किन्तु संसार की चिन्ताएँ तथा सम्पन्नता का छलावा सन्देश को दबा देते हैं और वह बिना फल के रह जाता है. 23 वह उत्तम भूमि, जिस पर बीज रोपा गया, वह व्यक्ति है, जो सन्देश को सुनता है, उसे समझता है तथा वास्तव में फल लाता है. यह उपज सौ गुणी, साठ गुणी, तीस गुणी होती है.”

जंगली बीज का दृष्टान्त

24 येशु ने उनके सामने एक अन्य दृष्टान्त प्रस्तुत किया: “स्वर्ग-राज्य की तुलना उस व्यक्ति से की जा सकती है, जिसने अपने खेत में उत्तम बीज का रोपण किया. 25 जब उसके सेवक सो रहे थे, उसका शत्रु आया और गेहूं के बीज के मध्य जंगली बीज रोप कर चला गया. 26 जब गेहूं के अंकुर फूटे और बालें आईं तब जंगली बीज के पौधे भी दिखाई दिए. 27 इस पर सेवकों ने आ कर अपने स्वामी से पूछा, ‘स्वामी, आपने तो अपने खेत में उत्तम बीज रोपे थे! तो फिर ये जंगली पौधे कहाँ से आ गए?’

28 “स्वामी ने उत्तर दिया, ‘यह काम शत्रु का है.’

“तब सेवकों ने उससे पूछा, ‘क्या आप चाहते हैं कि हम इन्हें उखाड़ फेंकें?’

29 “उस व्यक्ति ने उत्तर दिया, ‘नहीं, ऐसा न हो कि जंगली पौधे उखाड़ते हुए तुम गेहूं भी उखाड़ डालो. 30 गेहूं तथा जंगली पौधों को कटनी तक साथ-साथ बढ़ने दो. उस समय मैं मज़दूरों को आज्ञा दूँगा, जंगली पौधे इकट्ठा कर उनकी पूलियाँ बान्ध दो कि उन्हें जला दिया जाए किन्तु गेहूं मेरे खलिहान में इकट्ठा कर दो.’”

राई के बीज का दृष्टान्त

(मारक 4:30-34)

31 येशु ने उनके सामने एक अन्य दृष्टान्त प्रस्तुत किया: “स्वर्ग-राज्य एक राई के बीज के समान है, जिसे एक व्यक्ति ने अपने खेत में रोप दिया. 32 यह अन्य सभी बीजों की तुलना में छोटा होता है किन्तु जब यह पूरा विकसित हुआ तब खेत के सभी पौधों से अधिक बड़ा हो गया और फिर वह बढ़कर एक पेड़ में बदल गया कि पक्षी आ कर उसकी डालिओं में बसेरा करने लगे.”

33 येशु ने उनके सामने एक और दृष्टान्त प्रस्तुत किया: “स्वर्ग-राज्य ख़मीर के समान है, जिसे एक स्त्री ने ले कर तीन माप आटे में मिला दिया और होते-होते सारा आटा ख़मीर बन गया, यद्यपि आटा बड़ी मात्रा में था.”

34 येशु ने ये पूरी शिक्षाएं भीड़ को दृष्टान्तों में दीं. कोई भी शिक्षा ऐसी न थी, जो दृष्टान्त में न दी गई 35 कि भविष्यद्वक्ता द्वारा की गई यह भविष्यवाणी पूरी हो जाए:

मैं दृष्टान्तों में वार्तालाप करूँगा,
    मैं वह सब कहूँगा, जो सृष्टि के आरम्भ से गुप्त है.

जंगली बीज के दृष्टान्त की व्याख्या

36 जब येशु भीड़ को छोड़ कर घर के भीतर चले गए, उनके शिष्यों ने उनके पास आ कर उनसे विनती की, “गुरुवर, हमें खेत के जंगली बीज का दृष्टान्त समझा दीजिए.”

37 येशु ने दृष्टान्त की व्याख्या इस प्रकार की “अच्छे बीज बोनेवाला मनुष्य का पुत्र है. 38 खेत यह संसार है. अच्छा बीज राज्य की सन्तान हैं तथा जंगली बीज शैतान की. 39 शत्रु, जिसने उनको बोया है, शैतान है. कटनी इस युग का अन्त तथा काटने के लिए निर्धारित मज़दूर स्वर्गदूत हैं.

40 “इसलिए ठीक जिस प्रकार जंगली पौधे कटने के बाद आग में स्वाहा कर दिए जाते हैं, युग के अन्त में ऐसा ही होगा. 41 मानव-पुत्र अपने स्वर्गदूतों को भेजेगा और वे उस के राज्य में पतन के सभी कारणों तथा कुकर्मियों को इकट्ठा करेंगे और 42 उन्हें आग कुण्ड में झोंक देंगे, जहाँ लगातार रोना तथा दाँतों का पीसना होता रहेगा. 43 तब धर्मी अपने पिता के राज्य में सूर्य के समान चमकेंगे. जिसके सुनने के कान हों, वह सुन ले.”

छुपे हुए खज़ाने का दृष्टान्त

44 “स्वर्ग-राज्य खेत में छिपाए गए उस खज़ाने के समान है, जिसे एक व्यक्ति ने पाया और दोबारा छिपा दिया. आनन्द में उसने अपनी सारी सम्पत्ति बेच कर उस खेत को मोल ले लिया.

45 “स्वर्ग-राज्य उस व्यापारी के समान है, जो अच्छे मोतियों की खोज में था. 46 एक कीमती मोती मिल जाने पर उसने अपनी सारी सम्पत्ति बेच कर उस मोती को मोल ले लिया.

मछली के विशाल जाल का दृष्टान्त

47 “स्वर्ग-राज्य समुद्र में डाले गए उस जाल के समान है, जिसमें सभी प्रजातियों की मछलियां आ जाती हैं. 48 जब वह जाल भर गया और खींच कर तट पर लाया गया, उन्होंने बैठ कर अच्छी मछलियों को टोकरी में इकट्ठा कर लिया तथा निकम्मी को फेंक दिया. 49 युग के अन्त में ऐसा ही होगा. स्वर्गदूत आएंगे और दुष्टों को धर्मियों के मध्य से निकाल कर अलग करेंगे 50 तथा उन्हें आग के कुण्ड में झोंक देंगे, जहाँ रोना तथा दाँतों का पीसना होता रहेगा.

51 “क्या तुम्हें अब यह सब समझ आया?” उन्होंने उत्तर दिया.

“जी हाँ, प्रभु.”

52 येशु ने उनसे कहा, “यही कारण है कि व्यवस्था का हर एक शिक्षक, जो स्वर्ग-राज्य के विषय में प्रशिक्षित किया जा चुका है, परिवार के प्रधान के समान है, जो अपने भण्डार से नई और पुरानी हर एक वस्तु को निकाल लाता है.”

नाज़रेथवासियों द्वारा विश्वास करने में विरोध

(मारक 6:1-6)

53 दृष्टान्तों में अपनी शिक्षा दे चुकने पर येशु उस स्थान से चले गए.

54 तब येशु अपने गृहनगर में आए और वहाँ वह यहूदी-सभागृह में लोगों को शिक्षा देने लगे. इस पर वे चकित हो कर आपस में कहने लगे, “इस व्यक्ति को यह ज्ञान तथा इन अद्भुत कामों का सामर्थ्य कैसे प्राप्त हो गया? 55 क्या यह उस बढ़ई का पुत्र नहीं? और क्या इसकी माता का नाम मरियम नहीं और क्या याक़ोब, योसेफ़, शिमोन और यहूदाह इसके भाई नहीं? 56 और क्या इसकी बहनें हमारे बीच नहीं? तब इसे ये सब कैसे प्राप्त हो गया?” 57 वे येशु के प्रति क्रोध से भर गए.

इस पर येशु ने उनसे कहा, “अपने गृहनगर और परिवार के अलावा भविष्यद्वक्ता कहीं भी अपमानित नहीं होता.”

58 लोगों के अविश्वास के कारण येशु ने उस नगर में अधिक अद्भुत काम नहीं किए.

The Parable of the Sower

13 On that day Jesus went out of the house and[a] was sitting by the sea.[b] 2 And large crowds gathered close around him, so that he got into a boat to sit down, and all the crowd was standing on the shore. 3 And he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow, 4 and while he was sowing, some seed[c] fell on the side of the path, and the birds came and[d] devoured it. 5 And other seed fell on the rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up at once because it did not have any depth of soil. 6 But when[e] the sun rose it was scorched, and because it did not have enough root, it withered. 7 And other seed fell among the thorn plants, and the thorn plants came up and choked it. 8 But other seed fell on the good soil and produced grain,[f] this one a hundred times as much and this one sixty and this one thirty. 9 The one who has ears, let him hear!”

The Reason for the Parables

10 And the disciples came up and[g] said to him, “Why[h] do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And he answered and[i] said to them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to those people it has not been granted. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have an abundance. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 For this reason I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand, 14 and with reference to them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says,

“You will listen carefully[j] and will never understand,
    and you will look closely[k] and will never perceive.
15 For the heart of this people has become dull,
    and with their ears they hear with difficulty,
    and they have shut their eyes,
so that they would not see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
    and understand with their heart
    and turn, and I would heal them.”[l]

16 But your eyes are blessed because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it,[m] and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it![n]

The Parable of the Sower Interpreted

18 “You, therefore, listen to the parable of the sower: 19 When[o] anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it,[p] the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is what was sown on the side of the path. 20 And what was sown on the rocky ground—this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. 21 But he does not have a root in himself, but lasts only a little while,[q] and when[r] affliction or persecution happens because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 And what was sown into the thorn plants—this is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of this world[s] and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word and it becomes unproductive. 23 But what was sown on the good soil—this is the one who hears the word and understands it,[t] who indeed bears fruit and produces, this one a hundred times as much, and this one sixty, and this one thirty.”

The Parable of the Weeds Among the Wheat

24 He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while his[u] people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed darnel[v] in the midst of the wheat and went away. 26 So when the wheat[w] sprouted and yielded grain, then the darnel appeared also. 27 So the slaves of the master of the house came and[x] said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have darnel?’ 28 And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ So the slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and[y] gather them?’ 29 But he said, “No, lest when you[z] gather the darnel you uproot the wheat together with it. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the season of the harvest I will tell the reapers, “First gather the darnel and tie it into bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my storehouse.”’”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

31 He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and[aa] sowed in his field. 32 It[ab] is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it is grown it is larger than the garden herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.”

The Parable of the Yeast

33 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and[ac] put into three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

Parables Fulfill Prophecy

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables, and he was saying nothing to them without a parable, 35 in order that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, who said,

“I will open my mouth in parables;
    I will proclaim what has been hidden since the creation.”[ad][ae]

The Parable of the Weeds Interpreted

36 Then he left the crowds and[af] came into the house, and his disciples came to him saying, “Explain the parable of the darnel in the field to us.” 37 So he answered and[ag] said, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world. And the good seed—these are the sons of the kingdom, but the darnel are the sons of the evil one. 39 And the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Thus just as the darnel is gathered and burned[ah] with fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all the causes of sin and those who do lawless deeds, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace.[ai] In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth! 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.[aj] The one who has ears, let him hear!

The Parable of the Treasure Hidden in a Field

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, that a man found and[ak] concealed, and in his joy he goes and sells everything that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Valuable Pearl

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. 46 And when he[al] found one very valuable pearl, he went and[am] sold everything that he possessed and purchased it.

The Parable of the Dragnet

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish[an] of every kind, 48 which when it was filled they pulled to shore and sat down and[ao] collected the good fish[ap] into containers, but the bad they threw out. 49 Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the evil from among the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace.[aq] In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “For this reason every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of the house who brings out of his storeroom new things and old things.”

Rejected at Nazareth

53 And it happened that when Jesus had finished these parables he went away from there. 54 And he came to his hometown and[ar] began to teach[as] them in their synagogue, so that they were amazed and said, “From where did this man get this wisdom and these miracles? 55 Is not this one the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? From where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not perform many miracles in that place because of their unbelief.

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house(D) and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat(E) and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred,(F) sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”(G)

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven(H) has been given to you,(I) but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(J) 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
    though hearing, they do not hear or understand.(K)

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;

15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
    they hardly hear with their ears,

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.(N) 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see(O) but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom(P) and does not understand it, the evil one(Q) comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.(R) 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth(S) choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. The Parable of the Weeds

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(U) a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”(V)

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(W)(X)

31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(Y) a mustard seed,(Z) which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”(AA)

33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(AB) yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[b] of flour(AC) until it worked all through the dough.”(AD)

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.(AE) 35 So was fulfilled(AF) what was spoken through the prophet:

The Parable of the Weeds Explained

36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable(AH) of the weeds in the field.”

37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.(AI) 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,(AJ) 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest(AK) is the end of the age,(AL) and the harvesters are angels.(AM)

40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man(AN) will send out his angels,(AO) and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(AP) 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun(AQ) in the kingdom of their Father. The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like(AS) treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.(AT)

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AU) a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

The Parable of the Net

47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like(AV) a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds(AW) of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. 51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

A Prophet Without Honor(AZ)

53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(BA) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(BB) and they were amazed.(BC) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(BD) Isn’t his mother’s(BE) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(BF) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(BG) at him.

But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(BH)

58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
