12 In quel tempo Gesú camminava in giorno di sabato tra i campi di grano; ora i suoi discepoli ebbero fame e si misero a svellere delle spighe e a mangiarle.
2 Ma i farisei, veduto ciò, gli dissero: «Ecco, i tuoi discepoli fanno quello che non è lecito fare in giorno di sabato».
3 Ed egli disse loro: «Non avete letto ciò che fece Davide, quando ebbe fame, egli e quelli che erano con lui?
4 Come egli entrò nella casa di Dio e mangiò i pani della presentazione, che non era lecito mangiare né a lui, né a quelli che erano con lui, ma solo ai sacerdoti?
5 Ovvero, non avete letto nella legge che nel tempio i sacerdoti, nei giorni di sabato, trasgrediscono il sabato e tuttavia sono senza colpa?
6 Ora io vi dico che qui c'è qualcuno piú grande del tempio.
7 Ora, se voi sapeste che cosa significa: "Io voglio misericordia e non sacrificio" non avreste condannato gl'innocenti.
8 Perché il Figlio dell'uomo è signore anche del sabato».
9 Poi, partitosi di là, entrò nella loro sinagoga;
10 ed ecco, vi era un uomo che aveva una mano secca. Ed essi domandarono a Gesú, per poterlo poi accusare: «è lecito guarire qualcuno in giorno di sabato?».
11 Ed egli disse loro: «Chi è l'uomo fra voi che avendo una pecora, se questa cade in giorno di sabato in una fossa, non la prenda e non la tiri fuori?
12 Ora, quanto vale un uomo piú di una pecora! E dunque lecito fare del bene in giorno di sabato?».
13 Allora egli disse a quell'uomo: «Stendi la tua mano!». Ed egli la stese e fu resa sana come l'altra.
14 Ma i farisei, usciti fuori, tennero consiglio contro di lui, del come farlo morire,
15 Ma Gesú, conoscendo ciò, si allontanò di là; grandi folle lo seguirono, ed egli li guarí tutti,
16 e ordinò loro severamente di non dire chi egli fosse,
17 affinché si adempisse ciò che fu detto dal profeta Isaia che dice:
18 «Ecco il mio servo che io ho scelto; l'amato mio in cui l'anima mia si è compiaciuta. Io metterò il mio Spirito su di lui, ed egli annunzierà la giustizia alle genti.
19 Egli non disputerà e non griderà e nessuno udirà la sua voce per le piazze.
20 Egli non frantumerà la canna rotta e non spegnerà il lucignolo fumante, finché non abbia fatto trionfare la giustizia.
21 E le genti spereranno nel suo nome».
22 Allora gli fu presentato un indemoniato, cieco e muto; ed egli lo guarí, sicché il cieco e muto parlava e vedeva.
23 E tutte le folle stupivano e dicevano: «Non è costui il Figlio di Davide?».
24 Ma i farisei, udito ciò, dicevano: «Costui scaccia i demoni a solo per virtú di Beelzebub, principe dei demoni».
25 E Gesú, conoscendo i loro pensieri, disse loro: «Ogni regno diviso contro se stesso va in rovina; ed ogni città o casa, divisa contro se stessa non può durare.
26 Ora, se Satana scaccia Satana, egli è diviso contro se stesso, come dunque può durare il suo regno?
27 E se io scaccio i demoni con l'aiuto di Beelzebub, con l'aiuto di chi li scacciano i vostri figli? Per questo essi saranno i vostri giudici.
28 Ma, se io scaccio i demoni per mezzo dello Spirito di Dio, allora il regno di Dio è giunto in mezzo a voi.
29 Ovvero, come può uno entrare nella casa dell'uomo forte e rapirgli i suoi beni, se prima non lega l'uomo forte? Allora soltanto riuscirà a saccheggiare la sua casa.
30 Chi non è con me è contro di me, e chi non raccoglie con me disperde.
31 Perciò io vi dico: Ogni peccato e bestemmia sarà perdonata agli uomini; ma la bestemmia contro lo Spirito non sarà loro perdonata.
32 E chiunque parla contro il Figlio dell'uomo, sarà perdonato; ma chi parla contro lo Spirito Santo, non gli sarà perdonato, né in questa età né in quella futura».
33 «O fate l'albero buono e il suo frutto sarà buono, o fate l'albero malvagio e il suo frutto sarà malvagio; infatti l'albero lo si conosce dal frutto.
34 Razza di vipere! Come potete dir cose buone, essendo malvagi? Poiché la bocca parla dall'abbondanza del cuore.
35 L'uomo buono dal buon tesoro del cuore trae cose buone; ma l'uomo malvagio dal suo malvagio tesoro trae cose malvagie.
36 Or io dico che nel giorno del giudizio gli uomini renderanno conto di ogni parola oziosa che avranno detta.
37 Poiché in base alle tue parole sarai giustificato, e in base alle tue parole sarai condannato».
38 Allora alcuni scribi e farisei, lo interrogarono, dicendo: «Maestro, noi vorremmo vedere da te qualche segno».
39 Ma egli, rispondendo, disse loro: «Questa malvagia e adultera generazione chiede un segno, ma nessun segno le sarà dato, se non il segno del profeta Giona.
40 Infatti, come Giona fu tre giorni e tre notti nel ventre del grosso pesce, cosí starà il Figlio dell'uomo tre giorni e tre notti nel cuore della terra.
41 I Niniviti risorgeranno nel giudizio con questa generazione e la condanneranno, perché essi si ravvidero alla predicazione di Giona; ed ecco, qui c'è uno piú grande di Giona.
42 La regina del mezzogiorno risusciterà nel giudizio con questa generazione e la condannerà, perché ella venne dagli estremi confini della terra per udire la sapienza di Salomone; ed ecco, qui c'è uno piú grande di Salomone.
43 Ora, quando lo spirito immondo è uscito da un uomo, vaga per luoghi aridi, cercando riposo e non lo trova.
44 Allora dice: "Ritornerò nella mia casa da dove sono uscito ma quando giunge, la trova vuota, spazzata e adorna;
45 va allora a prendere con sé altri sette spiriti peggiori di lui, i quali entrano e vi prendono dimora; e l'ultima condizione di quell'uomo diventa peggiore della prima, Cosí avverrà anche a questa generazione malvagia».
46 Ora, mentre egli parlava ancora alle folle, ecco sua madre e i suoi fratelli i quali, fermatisi fuori, cercavano di parlargli.
47 E qualcuno gli disse: «Ecco tua madre e i tuoi fratelli sono là fuori e cercano di parlarti».
48 Ma egli rispondendo, disse a colui che lo aveva informato: «Chi è mia madre e chi sono i miei fratelli?».
49 E, distesa la mano verso i suoi discepoli, disse: «Ecco mia madre e i miei fratelli.
50 Poiché chiunque fa la volontà del Padre mio, che è nei cieli, mi è fratello, sorella e madre».

Le spighe strappate
12 In quel tempo Gesù passò tra le messi in giorno di sabato, e i suoi discepoli ebbero fame e cominciarono a cogliere spighe e le mangiavano. 2 Ciò vedendo, i farisei gli dissero: «Ecco, i tuoi discepoli stanno facendo quello che non è lecito fare in giorno di sabato». 3 Ed egli rispose: «Non avete letto quello che fece Davide quando ebbe fame insieme ai suoi compagni? 4 Come entrò nella casa di Dio e mangiarono i pani dell'offerta, che non era lecito mangiare né a lui né ai suoi compagni, ma solo ai sacerdoti? 5 O non avete letto nella Legge che nei giorni di sabato i sacerdoti nel tempio infrangono il sabato e tuttavia sono senza colpa? 6 Ora io vi dico che qui c'è qualcosa più grande del tempio. 7 Se aveste compreso che cosa significa: Misericordia io voglio e non sacrificio, non avreste condannato individui senza colpa. 8 Perché il Figlio dell'uomo è signore del sabato».
Guarigione di un uomo dalla mano inaridita
9 Allontanatosi di là, andò nella loro sinagoga. 10 Ed ecco, c'era un uomo che aveva una mano inaridita, ed essi chiesero a Gesù: «E' permesso curare di sabato?». Dicevano ciò per accusarlo. 11 Ed egli disse loro: «Chi tra voi, avendo una pecora, se questa gli cade di sabato in una fossa, non l'afferra e la tira fuori? 12 Ora, quanto è più prezioso un uomo di una pecora! Perciò è permesso fare del bene anche di sabato». 13 E rivolto all'uomo, gli disse: «Stendi la mano». Egli la stese, e quella ritornò sana come l'altra. 14 I farisei però, usciti, tennero consiglio contro di lui per toglierlo di mezzo.
Gesù è il "servo del Signore"
15 Ma Gesù, saputolo, si allontanò di là. Molti lo seguirono ed egli guarì tutti, 16 ordinando loro di non divulgarlo, 17 perché si adempisse ciò che era stato detto dal profeta Isaia:
18 Ecco il mio servo che io ho scelto;
il mio prediletto, nel quale mi sono compiaciuto.
Porrò il mio spirito sopra di lui
e annunzierà la giustizia alle genti.
19 Non contenderà, né griderà,
né si udrà sulle piazze la sua voce.
20 La canna infranta non spezzerà,
non spegnerà il lucignolo fumigante,
finché abbia fatto trionfare la giustizia;
21 nel suo nome spereranno le genti.
Gesù e Beelzebùl
22 In quel tempo gli fu portato un indemoniato, cieco e muto, ed egli lo guarì, sicché il muto parlava e vedeva. 23 E tutta la folla era sbalordita e diceva: «Non è forse costui il figlio di Davide?». 24 Ma i farisei, udendo questo, presero a dire: «Costui scaccia i demòni in nome di Beelzebùl, principe dei demòni».
25 Ma egli, conosciuto il loro pensiero, disse loro: «Ogni regno discorde cade in rovina e nessuna città o famiglia discorde può reggersi. 26 Ora, se satana scaccia satana, egli è discorde con se stesso; come potrà dunque reggersi il suo regno? 27 E se io scaccio i demòni in nome di Beelzebùl, i vostri figli in nome di chi li scacciano? Per questo loro stessi saranno i vostri giudici. 28 Ma se io scaccio i demòni per virtù dello Spirito di Dio, è certo giunto fra voi il regno di Dio. 29 Come potrebbe uno penetrare nella casa dell'uomo forte e rapirgli le sue cose, se prima non lo lega? Allora soltanto gli potrà saccheggiare la casa. 30 Chi non è con me è contro di me, e chi non raccoglie con me, disperde. 31 Perciò io vi dico: Qualunque peccato e bestemmia sarà perdonata agli uomini, ma la bestemmia contro lo Spirito non sarà perdonata. 32 A chiunque parlerà male del Figlio dell'uomo sarà perdonato; ma la bestemmia contro lo Spirito, non gli sarà perdonata né in questo secolo, né in quello futuro.
Le parole rivelano il cuore
33 Se prendete un albero buono, anche il suo frutto sarà buono; se prendete un albero cattivo, anche il suo frutto sarà cattivo: dal frutto infatti si conosce l'albero. 34 Razza di vipere, come potete dire cose buone, voi che siete cattivi? Poiché la bocca parla dalla pienezza del cuore. 35 L'uomo buono dal suo buon tesoro trae cose buone, mentre l'uomo cattivo dal suo cattivo tesoro trae cose cattive. 36 Ma io vi dico che di ogni parola infondata gli uomini renderanno conto nel giorno del giudizio; 37 poiché in base alle tue parole sarai giustificato e in base alle tue parole sarai condannato».
Il segno di Giona
38 Allora alcuni scribi e farisei lo interrogarono: «Maestro, vorremmo che tu ci facessi vedere un segno». Ed egli rispose: 39 «Una generazione perversa e adultera pretende un segno! Ma nessun segno le sarà dato, se non il segno di Giona profeta. 40 Come infatti Giona rimase tre giorni e tre notti nel ventre del pesce, così il Figlio dell'uomo resterà tre giorni e tre notti nel cuore della terra. 41 Quelli di Nìnive si alzeranno a giudicare questa generazione e la condanneranno, perché essi si convertirono alla predicazione di Giona. Ecco, ora qui c'è più di Giona! 42 La regina del sud si leverà a giudicare questa generazione e la condannerà, perché essa venne dall'estremità della terra per ascoltare la sapienza di Salomone; ecco, ora qui c'è più di Salomone!
Ritorno offensivo dello spirito immondo
43 Quando lo spirito immondo esce da un uomo, se ne va per luoghi aridi cercando sollievo, ma non ne trova. 44 Allora dice: Ritornerò alla mia abitazione, da cui sono uscito. E tornato la trova vuota, spazzata e adorna. 45 Allora va, si prende sette altri spiriti peggiori ed entra a prendervi dimora; e la nuova condizione di quell'uomo diventa peggiore della prima. Così avverrà anche a questa generazione perversa».
I veri parenti di Gesù
46 Mentre egli parlava ancora alla folla, sua madre e i suoi fratelli, stando fuori in disparte, cercavano di parlargli. 47 Qualcuno gli disse: «Ecco di fuori tua madre e i tuoi fratelli che vogliono parlarti». 48 Ed egli, rispondendo a chi lo informava, disse: «Chi è mia madre e chi sono i miei fratelli?». 49 Poi stendendo la mano verso i suoi discepoli disse: «Ecco mia madre ed ecco i miei fratelli; 50 perché chiunque fa la volontà del Padre mio che è nei cieli, questi è per me fratello, sorella e madre».

Sabbath Questions
12 At that particular time Jesus went through the grainfields on the [a]Sabbath, and His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.(A) 2 But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what [b]is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(B) 3 He said to them, “Have you not read [in the Scriptures] what David did when he was hungry, he and those who accompanied him—(C) 4 how he went into the house of God, and they ate the [c]consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests only? 5 Or have you not read in the Law, that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break [the sanctity of] the Sabbath and yet are innocent?(D) 6 But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 And if you had only known what this statement means, ‘I desire compassion [for those in distress], [d]and not [animal] sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.(E)
Lord of the Sabbath
8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9 Leaving there, He went into their synagogue.(F) 10 A man was there whose hand was withered. And they asked Jesus, “Is it lawful and permissible to heal on the Sabbath?”—they asked this so that they might accuse Him and bring charges into court. 11 But He said to them, “What man is there among you who, if he has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful and permissible to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then He said to the man, “Reach out your hand!” The man reached out and it was restored, as normal and healthy as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, discussing how they could destroy Him.
15 Being aware of this, Jesus left there. Many followed Him, and He healed all of them [who were sick], 16 and warned them not to tell [publicly] who He was. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

“Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen;
My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased;
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will proclaim justice to the nations.
19
“He will not quarrel, nor cry out loudly;
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20
“A battered reed He will not break,
And a smoldering wick He will not extinguish,
Until He leads justice to victory.
21
“And in His name the Gentiles (all the nations of the world) will hope [with confidence].”(G)
The Pharisees Rebuked
22 Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and He healed him, so that the mute man both spoke and saw.(H) 23 All the people wondered in amazement, and said, “Could this be the Son of David (the Messiah)?” 24 But the Pharisees heard it and said, “This man [e]casts out demons only by [the help of] Beelzebul (Satan) the prince of the demons.”
25 Knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, “Any kingdom that is divided against itself is being laid waste; and no city or house divided against itself will [continue to] stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan [that is, his demons], he has become divided against himself and disunited; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 If I cast out the demons by [the help of] Beelzebul (Satan), by whom do your sons drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you [before you expected it]. 29 Or how can anyone go into a strong man’s house and steal his property unless he first overpowers and ties up the strong man? Then he will ransack and rob his house.(I)
The Unpardonable Sin
30 He who is not with Me [once and for all on My side] is against Me; and he who does not [unequivocally] gather with Me scatters.(J)
31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy [every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things] will be forgiven people, but [f]blasphemy against the [Holy] Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit [by attributing the miracles done by Me to Satan] will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.(K)
Words Reveal Character
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is recognized and judged by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35 The good man, from his [inner] good treasure, brings out good things; and the evil man, from his [inner] evil treasure, brings out evil things. 36 But I tell you, on the day of judgment people will have to give an accounting for every careless or useless word they speak. 37 For by your words [reflecting your spiritual condition] you will be justified and acquitted of the guilt of sin; and by your words [rejecting Me] you will be condemned and sentenced.”
The Desire for Signs
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign (attesting miracle) from You [proving that You are what You claim to be].” 39 But He replied and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation [that is morally unfaithful to God] craves and demands a [miraculous] sign; but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah;(L) 40 for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(M) 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up [as witnesses] at the judgment against this generation, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now, something greater than Jonah is here.(N) 42 The Queen of the South (Sheba) will stand up [as a witness] at the judgment against this generation, and will condemn it because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and now, something greater than Solomon is here.(O)
43 “Now when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it roams through waterless (dry, arid) places in search of rest, but it does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it arrives, it finds the place unoccupied, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there. And the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first. So will it also be with this wicked generation.”
Changed Relationships
46 While He was still talking to the crowds, it happened that His mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to Him.(P) 47 Someone said to Him, “Look! Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside asking to speak to You.” 48 But Jesus replied to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And stretching out His hand toward His disciples [and all His other followers], He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For [g]whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven [by believing in Me, and following Me] is My brother and sister and mother.”

- Matthew 12:2 Picking grain to eat was not forbidden on the Sabbath. It was ridiculous for the Pharisees to try to equate gleaning for food with reaping a harvest (which was forbidden on the Sabbath).
