25 (A)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (B)you clean the outside of (C)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (D)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (E)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 (F)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like (G)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and (H)all uncleanness. 28 So you also (I)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of (J)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (K)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are (L)sons of those who murdered the prophets.

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some (A)who trusted (B)in themselves that they were righteous, (C)and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men (D)went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, (E)standing by himself, prayed[a] (F)thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 (G)I fast twice a week; (H)I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (I)standing far off, (J)would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but (K)beat his breast, saying, ‘God, (L)be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For (M)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
