2 فَكَمَا هُوَ مَكتُوبٌ فِي كِتَابِ النَّبِيِّ إشَعْيَاءَ:
«هَا أنَا أُرسِلُ رَسُولِي قُدَّامَكَ.
لِيُعِدَّ الطَّرِيقَ.»[a]
3 «صَوْتُ إنْسَانٍ يُنَادِي فِي البَرِّيَّةِ وَيَقُولُ:
‹أعِدُّوا الطَّرِيقَ للرَّبِّ.
اجعَلُوا السُّبُلَ مُسْتَقِيمَةً مِنْ أجْلِهِ.›»[b]
4 جَاءَ يُوحَنَّا المَعْمَدَانُ يُعَمِّدُ فِي البَرِّيَّةِ، وَيُطَالِبُ النَّاسَ بِأنْ يَتَعَمَّدُوا كَدَلِيلٍ عَلَى تَوْبَتِهِمْ لِغُفرَانِ الخَطَايَا. 5 وَخَرَجَ إلَيْهِ جَمِيعُ سُكَّانِ قُرَى إقْلِيمِ اليَهُودِيَّةِ، وَمَدينَةِ القُدْسِ. وَكَانَ يُعَمِّدُهُمْ فِي نَهْرِ الأُرْدُنِّ بَعْدَ أنْ يَعْتَرِفُوا بِخَطَايَاهُمْ.
6 كَانَتْ ثِيَابُهُ مِنْ وَبَرِ الجِمَالِ، وَعَلَى وَسْطِهِ حِزَامٌ مِنْ جِلْدٍ، وَيَأْكُلُ الجَرَادَ وَالعَسَلَ البَرِّيَّ.
7 وَكَانَ يُعلِنُ وَيَقُولُ: «سَيَأْتِي بَعدِي رَجُلٌ أعْظَمُ مِنِّي، وَأنَا لَسْتُ مُسْتَحِقًّا أنْ أنحَنِيَ وَأحُلَّ رِبَاطَ حِذَائِهِ. 8 أنَا عَمَّدُتُكُمْ فِي المَاءِ، أمَّا هُوَ فَسَيُعَمِّدُكُمْ فِي الرُّوحِ القُدُسِ.»

2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”[a](A)—
3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[b](B)
4 And so John the Baptist(C) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(D) for the forgiveness of sins.(E) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist,(F) and he ate locusts(G) and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.(H) 8 I baptize you with[c] water, but he will baptize you with[d] the Holy Spirit.”(I)
