⁴³Joseph of Arimathea came, a ^(A)prominent member of the Council, who himself was ^(B)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he ^(C)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. ⁴⁵And ascertaining this from ^(D)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

⁴³Joseph of Arimathea, ^(A)a respected member of the council, who ^(B)was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.^[a] And summoning ^(C)the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. ⁴⁵And when he learned from ^(D)the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.

Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. ⁴⁵When he learned from the centurion^(C) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.
