Mark 1:4-11

⁴ John came baptizing^[a](A) in the wilderness^(B) and proclaiming a baptism of repentance^(C) for the forgiveness^(D) of sins.^{(E) 5} The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem^(F) were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan^(G) River, confessing^(H) their sins.^{(I) 6} John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts^(J) and wild honey.^(K)

⁷ He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful^(L) than I am is coming after me.^(M) I am not worthy^(N) to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.^{(O) 8} I baptize you with^[b] water,^(P) but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”^(Q)

The Baptism of Jesus

⁹ In^(R) those days Jesus came from Nazareth^(S) in Galilee^(T) and was baptized in the Jordan by John. ¹⁰ As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens^(U) being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. ¹¹ And a voice^(V) came from heaven:^(W) “You are my beloved^(X) Son;^(Y) with you I am well-pleased.”^(Z)
