³A voice of one crying out in the wilderness:^(A)
Prepare the way for the Lord;^(B)
make his paths straight!^[a]^(C)

⁴John came baptizing^[b]^(D) in the wilderness^(E) and proclaiming a baptism of repentance^(F) for the forgiveness^(G) of sins.^(H) ⁵The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem^(I) were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan^(J) River, confessing^(K) their sins.^(L)
