2 Just as it is written in the prophet Isaiah,
“Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face,
who will prepare your way,
3 the voice of one shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths!’”[a]
4 John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming[b] a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6 And John was dressed in camel’s hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he was preaching, saying, “One who is more powerful than I is coming after me, of whom I am not worthy to bend down and[c] untie the strap of his sandals. 8 I baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9 And it happened that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10 And immediately as he[d] was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens being split apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”[a](A)—
3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[b](B)
4 And so John the Baptist(C) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(D) for the forgiveness of sins.(E) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist,(F) and he ate locusts(G) and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.(H) 8 I baptize you with[c] water, but he will baptize you with[d] the Holy Spirit.”(I)

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth(L) in Galilee and was baptized by John(M) in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.(N) 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(O) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(P)
