20 Num daqueles dias em que Jesus estava a ensinar o povo e a pregar o evangelho no templo, foi interrogado pelos principais sacerdotes, pelos especialistas na Lei e pelos anciãos. 2 Estes perguntavam-lhe: “Diz-nos com que autoridade fazes essas coisas. Quem te deu tal autoridade?”
3 Em resposta, Jesus retorquiu-lhes: “Também eu tenho uma pergunta para vos fazer. Ora digam-me: 4 O batismo de João é de inspiração celeste ou humana?”
5 Eles discutiram o caso entre si. “Se dissermos que é de inspiração celeste, ele perguntará: ‘Então porque não acreditaram nele?’ 6 Mas se dissermos que é de inspiração humana, todo o povo nos apedrejará, pois está convencido de que ele era um profeta.” 7 Por fim, responderam: “Não sabemos!”
8 Jesus disse: “Então também não respondo à vossa pergunta!”

20 Um dia Jesus estava no templo ensinando o povo e anunciando as Boas Novas, quando os líderes dos sacerdotes, os professores da lei e os líderes se aproximaram dele 2 e disseram:
—Diga-nos que tipo de autoridade tem para fazer essas coisas e quem lhe deu essa autoridade?
3 Ele respondeu:
—Eu também quero lhes fazer uma pergunta. Digam-me isto: 4 Quem deu a João autoridade para batizar: Deus ou os homens?
5 Eles começaram a discutir entre si e diziam:
—Se nós respondermos: “Foi Deus”, ele nos perguntará: “Por que então vocês não acreditaram nele?” 6 Se nós respondermos: “Foram os homens”, todo o povo nos apedrejará, pois estão convencidos de que João era um profeta. 7 Então eles responderam que não sabiam quem tinha dado autoridade a João para ele batizar. 8 Jesus, então, lhes disse:
—Então eu também não vou lhes dizer com que autoridade faço estas coisas.

20 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
3 And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?
5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?
6 But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.
7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.
8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
