⁸ Therefore bear fruits ^(A)worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. ⁹ And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore ^(B)every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

¹⁰ So the people asked him, saying, ^(C)“What shall we do then?”

¹¹ He answered and said to them, ^(D)“He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, ^(E)let him do likewise.”

¹² Then ^(F)tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”

¹³ And he said to them, ^(G)“Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”

¹⁴ Likewise the soldiers asked him, saying, “And what shall we do?”

So he said to them, “Do not ^[a]intimidate anyone ^(H)or accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.”

²⁰ but ^(A)declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do ^(B)works befitting repentance.

^30 (A)“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord God. ^(B)“Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. ^31 (C)Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a ^(D)new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel? ³² For ^(E)I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord God. “Therefore turn and ^(F)live!”

^43 (A)If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life ^[a]maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to ^[b]hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—

⁴⁵ And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into ^[a]hell, ^[b]into the fire that shall never be quenched—

⁴⁷ And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into ^[a]hell fire— ⁴⁸ where

^29 (A)If your right eye causes you to ^[a]sin, ^(B)pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
