23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(A) 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(B) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(C) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(D)
3 So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(E)
5 But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(F) and has come all the way here.”
6 On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(G) 7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(H) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(I) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. 9 He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(J) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(K) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(L)—before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(M) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(N) and then release him.” [17] [a]
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(O) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)
20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(P)
23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(Q)
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(R) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(S) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(T) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(U) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(V) 30 Then
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(X)
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(Y) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(Z) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[c](AA) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AB)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(AC) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(AD)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(AE) They offered him wine vinegar(AF) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(AG) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(AH)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(AI)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(AJ)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[d]”(AK)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(AL)
The Death of Jesus(AM)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(AN) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(AO) was torn in two.(AP) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AQ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[e](AR) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AS)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AT) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AU) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AV) stood at a distance,(AW) watching these things.
The Burial of Jesus(AX)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(AY) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(AZ) and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(BA) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(BB) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(BC)

Isus înaintea lui Pilat
23 S-au sculat(A) toţi şi au dus pe Isus înaintea lui Pilat. 2 Şi au început să-L pârască şi să zică: „Pe omul acesta l-am găsit aţâţând(B) neamul nostru la răscoală, oprind(C) a plăti bir cezarului şi zicând că(D) el este Hristosul, Împăratul”. 3 Pilat(E) L-a întrebat: „Eşti Tu Împăratul iudeilor?” „Da, i-a răspuns Isus, sunt.” 4 Pilat a zis preoţilor celor mai de seamă şi noroadelor: „Eu nu găsesc nicio(F) vină în omul acesta”. 5 Dar ei stăruiau şi mai mult şi ziceau: „Întărâtă norodul şi învaţă pe oameni prin toată Iudeea, din Galileea, unde a început, până aici.”
Isus înaintea lui Irod
6 Când a auzit Pilat de Galileea, a întrebat dacă omul acesta este galileean. 7 Şi când a aflat că este de sub stăpânirea(G) lui Irod, L-a trimis la Irod, care se afla şi el în Ierusalim în zilele acelea. 8 Irod, când a văzut pe Isus, s-a bucurat foarte mult, căci de mult dorea(H) să-L vadă din pricina celor auzite(I) despre El şi nădăjduia să-L vadă făcând vreo minune. 9 I-a pus multe întrebări, dar Isus nu i-a răspuns nimic. 10 Preoţii cei mai de seamă şi cărturarii stăteau acolo şi-L pârau cu înfierbântare. 11 Irod(J), cu ostaşii lui de pază, se purtau cu El cu dispreţ şi, după ce şi-a bătut joc de El şi L-a îmbrăcat cu o haină strălucitoare, L-a trimis înapoi la Pilat. 12 În ziua aceea, Irod şi Pilat(K) s-au împrietenit unul cu altul, căci erau învrăjbiţi între ei mai înainte.
Hotărârea de moarte întărită
13 Pilat(L) a strâns pe preoţii cei mai de seamă, pe fruntaşi şi pe norod 14 şi le-a zis: „Mi-aţi(M) adus înainte pe omul acesta ca pe unul care aţâţă norodul la răscoală. Şi iată că, după ce l-am cercetat cu de-amănuntul(N) înaintea voastră, nu l-am găsit vinovat de niciunul din lucrurile de care-l pârâţi. 15 Nici Irod nu i-a găsit nicio vină, căci ni l-a trimis înapoi, şi iată că omul acesta n-a făcut nimic vrednic de moarte. 16 Eu, deci(O), după ce voi pune să-L bată, îi voi da drumul.” 17 La fiecare Praznic al Paştelor, Pilat trebuia(P) să le sloboadă un întemniţat. 18 Ei au(Q) strigat cu toţii într-un glas: „La moarte cu omul acesta şi sloboade-ne pe Baraba!” 19 Baraba fusese aruncat în temniţă pentru o răscoală care avusese loc în cetate şi pentru un omor. 20 Pilat le-a vorbit din nou, cu gând să dea drumul lui Isus. 21 Dar ei au strigat: „Răstigneşte-L! Răstigneşte-L!” 22 Pilat le-a zis pentru a treia oară: „Dar ce rău a făcut? Eu n-am găsit nicio vină de moarte în El. Aşa că, după ce voi pune să-L bată, Îi voi da drumul.” 23 Dar ei strigau în gura mare şi cereau de zor să fie răstignit. Şi strigătele lor şi ale preoţilor celor mai de seamă au biruit. 24 Pilat(R) a hotărât să li se împlinească cererea. 25 Le-a slobozit pe cel ce fusese aruncat în temniţă pentru răscoală şi omor şi pe care-l cereau ei, iar pe Isus L-a dat în mâinile lor, ca să-şi facă voia cu El.
Răstignirea
26 Pe(S) când Îl duceau să-L răstignească, au pus mâna pe un anume Simon din Cirene, care se întorcea de la câmp, şi i-au pus crucea în spinare, ca s-o ducă după Isus. 27 În urma lui Isus mergea o mare mulţime de norod şi femei, care se boceau, îşi băteau pieptul şi se tânguiau după El. 28 Isus S-a întors spre ele şi a zis: „Fiice ale Ierusalimului, nu Mă plângeţi pe Mine, ci plângeţi-vă pe voi însevă şi pe copiii voştri. 29 Căci(T) iată, vor veni zile când se va zice: ‘Ferice de cele sterpe, ferice de pântecele care n-au născut şi de ţâţele care n-au alăptat!’ 30 Atunci(U), vor începe să zică munţilor: ‘Cădeţi peste noi!’ şi dealurilor: ‘Acoperiţi-ne!’ 31 Căci(V) dacă se fac aceste lucruri copacului verde, ce se va face celui uscat?” 32 Împreună(W) cu El duceau şi pe doi făcători de rele, care trebuiau omorâţi împreună cu Isus. 33 Când(X) au ajuns la locul numit „Căpăţâna”, L-au răstignit acolo, pe El şi pe făcătorii de rele: unul la dreapta şi altul la stânga. 34 Isus zicea: „Tată, iartă-i(Y), căci nu(Z) ştiu ce fac!” Ei şi-au împărţit(AA) hainele Lui între ei, trăgând la sorţi.
Batjocurile
35 Norodul(AB) stătea acolo şi privea. Fruntaşii(AC) îşi băteau joc de Isus şi ziceau: „Pe alţii i-a mântuit; să Se mântuiască pe Sine Însuşi dacă este El Hristosul, Alesul lui Dumnezeu”. 36 Ostaşii, de asemenea, îşi băteau joc de El; se apropiau, Îi dădeau oţet 37 şi-I ziceau: „Dacă eşti Tu Împăratul iudeilor, mântuieşte-Te pe Tine Însuţi!” 38 Deasupra(AD) Lui era scris cu slove greceşti, latineşti şi evreeşti: „Acesta este Împăratul iudeilor”. 39 Unul(AE) din tâlharii răstigniţi Îl batjocorea şi zicea: „Nu eşti Tu Hristosul? Mântuieşte-Te pe Tine Însuţi şi mântuieşte-ne şi pe noi!” 40 Dar celălalt l-a înfruntat şi i-a zis: „Nu te temi tu de Dumnezeu, tu, care eşti sub aceeaşi osândă? 41 Pentru noi este drept, căci primim răsplata cuvenită pentru fărădelegile noastre, dar omul acesta n-a făcut niciun rău.” 42 Şi a zis lui Isus: „Doamne, adu-Ţi aminte de mine când vei veni în Împărăţia Ta!” 43 Isus a răspuns: „Adevărat îţi spun că astăzi vei fi cu Mine în rai”.
Moartea lui Isus
44 Era(AF) cam pe la ceasul al şaselea. Şi s-a făcut întuneric peste toată ţara până la ceasul al nouălea. 45 Soarele s-a întunecat şi perdeaua(AG) dinăuntrul Templului s-a rupt prin mijloc. 46 Isus a strigat cu glas tare: „Tată(AH), în mâinile Tale Îmi încredinţez duhul!”Şi(AI) când a zis aceste vorbe, Şi-a dat duhul. 47 Sutaşul(AJ), când a văzut ce se întâmplase, a slăvit pe Dumnezeu şi a zis: „Cu adevărat, omul acesta era neprihănit!” 48 Şi tot norodul, care venise la priveliştea aceea, când a văzut cele întâmplate, s-a întors, bătându-se în piept. 49 Toţi(AK) cunoscuţii lui Isus şi femeile care-L însoţiseră din Galileea stăteau departe şi se uitau la cele ce se petreceau.
Îngroparea lui Isus
50 Era(AL) un sfetnic al soborului, numit Iosif, om bun şi evlavios, 51 care nu luase parte la sfatul şi hotărârea celorlalţi. El era din Arimateea, o cetate a iudeilor, şi(AM) aştepta şi el Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. 52 Omul acesta s-a dus la Pilat şi a cerut trupul lui Isus. 53 L-a(AN) dat jos de pe cruce, L-a înfăşurat într-o pânză de in şi L-a pus într-un mormânt nou, săpat în piatră, în care nu mai fusese pus nimeni. 54 Era Ziua(AO) Pregătirii şi începea ziua Sabatului. 55 Femeile care(AP) veniseră cu Isus din Galileea au însoţit pe Iosif, au văzut(AQ) mormântul şi felul cum a fost pus trupul lui Isus în el, 56 s-au întors şi au(AR) pregătit miresme şi miruri. Apoi, în ziua Sabatului, s-au odihnit, după(AS) Lege.

23 Then the whole assembly of them got up and conducted [Jesus] before Pilate.
2 And they began to accuse Him, asserting, We found this [a]Man perverting (misleading, corrupting, and turning away) our nation and forbidding to pay tribute to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), a King!
3 So Pilate asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews? And He answered him, [[b]It is just as] you say. [I Am.]
4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and the throngs, I find no guilt or crime in this Man.
5 But they were urgent and emphatic, saying, He stirs up and excites the people, teaching throughout all Judea—from Galilee, where He began, even to this place.
6 Upon hearing this, Pilate asked whether the Man was a Galilean.
7 And when he found out [certainly] that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him up to Herod [a higher authority], who was also in Jerusalem in those days.
8 Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he had eagerly desired to see Him for a long time because of what he had heard concerning Him, and he was hoping to witness some sign (some striking evidence or spectacular performance) done by Him.
9 So he asked Him many questions, but He made no reply.(A)
10 Meanwhile, the chief priests and the scribes stood by, continuing vehemently and violently to accuse Him.
11 And Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt and scoffed at and ridiculed Him; then, dressing Him up in bright and gorgeous apparel, he sent Him back to Pilate.(B)
12 And that very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other—[though] they had been at enmity before this.
13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14 And said to them, You brought this Man before me as One Who was perverting and misleading and [c]turning away and corrupting the people; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have not found any offense (crime or guilt) in this Man in regard to your accusations against Him;
15 No, nor indeed did Herod, for he sent Him back to us; behold, He has done nothing deserving of death.
16 I will therefore chastise Him and [d]deliver Him amended (reformed, taught His lesson) and release Him.
17 [e]For it was necessary for him to release to them one prisoner at the Feast.
18 But they all together raised a deep cry [from the depths of their throats], saying, Away with this Man! Release to us Barabbas!
19 He was a man who had been thrown into prison for raising a riot in the city, and for murder.
20 Once more Pilate called to them, wishing to release Jesus;
21 But they kept shouting out, Crucify, crucify Him!
22 A third time he said to them, Why? What wrong has He done? I have found [no offense or crime or guilt] in Him nothing deserving of death; I will therefore chastise Him [[f]in order to teach Him better] and release Him.
23 But they were insistent and urgent, demanding with loud cries that He should be crucified. And their voices prevailed (accomplished their purpose).
24 And Pilate gave sentence, that what they asked should be done.
25 So he released the man who had been thrown into prison for riot and murder, for whom they continued to ask, but Jesus he delivered up to be done with as they willed.
26 And as they led Him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 And there accompanied [Jesus] a great multitude of the people, [including] women who bewailed and lamented Him.
28 But Jesus, turning toward them, said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
29 For behold, the days are coming during which they will say, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and [g]to be envied) are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have never nursed [babies]!
30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us! and to the hills, Cover (conceal, hide) us!
31 For if they do these things when the timber is green, what will happen when it is dry?
32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be executed with Him.(C)
33 And when they came to the place which is called The Skull [Latin: Calvary; Hebrew: Golgotha], there they crucified Him, and [along with] the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.
34 And Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And they divided His garments and distributed them by casting lots for them.(D)
35 Now the people stood by [[h]calmly and leisurely] watching; but the rulers scoffed and sneered ([i]turned up their noses) at Him, saying, He rescued others [[j]from death]; let Him now rescue Himself, if He is the Christ (the Messiah) of God, His Chosen One!
36 The soldiers also ridiculed and made sport of Him, coming up and offering Him vinegar (a sour wine mixed with water)(E)
37 And saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save (rescue) Yourself [[k]from death].
38 For there was also an inscription above Him [l]in letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew: This is the King of the Jews.
39 One of the criminals who was suspended kept up a railing at Him, saying, Are You not the Christ (the Messiah)? Rescue Yourself and us [[m]from death]!
40 But the other one reproved him, saying, Do you not even fear God, seeing you yourself are under the same sentence of condemnation and suffering the same penalty?
41 And we indeed suffer it justly, receiving the due reward of our actions; but this Man has done nothing out of the way [nothing [n]strange or eccentric or perverse or unreasonable].
42 Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when You come [o]in Your kingly glory!
43 And He answered him, Truly I tell you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.
44 It was now about the sixth hour (midday), and darkness enveloped the whole land and earth until the ninth hour (about three o’clock in the afternoon),
45 While the sun’s light faded or [p]was darkened; and the curtain [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was torn in two.(F)
46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit! And with these words, He expired.(G)
47 Now the centurion, having seen what had taken place, [q]recognized God and thanked and praised Him, and said, Indeed, without question, this Man was upright (just and innocent)!
48 And all the throngs that had gathered to see this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned to their homes, beating their breasts.
49 And all the acquaintances of [Jesus] and the women who had followed Him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched these things.
50 Now notice, there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council (the Sanhedrin), and a good (upright, [r]advantageous) man, and righteous (in right standing with God and man),
51 Who had not agreed with or assented to the purpose and action of the others; and he was expecting and waiting for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53 Then he took it down and [s]rolled it up in a linen cloth [t]for swathing dead bodies and laid Him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid.
54 It was the day of Preparation [for the Sabbath], and the Sabbath was dawning (approaching).
55 The women who had come with [Jesus] from Galilee followed closely and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.
56 Then they went back and made ready spices and ointments (perfumes). On the Sabbath day they rested in accordance with the commandment.(H)
