Zaqueo, el recaudador de impuestos
19 Jesús llegó a Jericó y comenzó a atravesar la ciudad. 2 Resulta que había allí un hombre llamado Zaqueo, jefe de los recaudadores de impuestos, que era muy rico. 3 Estaba tratando de ver quién era Jesús, pero la multitud se lo impedía, pues era de baja estatura. 4 Por eso se adelantó corriendo y se subió a un árbol sicómoro para poder verlo, ya que Jesús iba a pasar por allí.
5 Llegando al lugar, Jesús miró hacia arriba y le dijo:
―Zaqueo, baja en seguida. Voy a quedarme hoy en tu casa.
6 Así que se apresuró a bajar y, muy contento, recibió a Jesús en su casa.
7 Al ver esto, todos empezaron a murmurar: «Ha ido a hospedarse con un pecador».
8 Pero Zaqueo dijo resueltamente:
―Mira, Señor: Ahora mismo voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes y, si en algo he defraudado a alguien, le devolveré cuatro veces la cantidad que sea.
9 ―Hoy ha llegado la salvación a esta casa —le dijo Jesús—, ya que este también es hijo de Abraham. 10 Porque el Hijo del hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido.
Parábola del dinero
11 Como la gente lo escuchaba, pasó a contarles una parábola, porque estaba cerca de Jerusalén y la gente pensaba que el reino de Dios iba a manifestarse en cualquier momento. 12 Así que les dijo: «Un hombre de la nobleza se fue a un país lejano para ser coronado rey y luego regresar. 13 Llamó a diez de sus siervos y entregó a cada cual una buena cantidad de dinero.[a] Les instruyó: “Haced negocio con este dinero hasta que yo vuelva”. 14 Pero sus súbditos lo odiaban y mandaron tras él una delegación a decir: “No queremos a este por rey”.
15 »A pesar de todo, fue nombrado rey. Cuando regresó a su país, mandó llamar a los siervos a quienes había entregado el dinero, para enterarse de lo que habían ganado. 16 Se presentó el primero y dijo: “Señor, tu dinero[b] ha producido diez veces más”. 17 “¡Hiciste bien, siervo bueno! —le respondió el rey—. Puesto que has sido fiel en tan poca cosa, te doy el gobierno de diez ciudades”. 18 Se presentó el segundo y dijo: “Señor, tu dinero ha producido cinco veces más”. 19 El rey le respondió: “A ti te pongo sobre cinco ciudades”.
20 »Llegó otro siervo y dijo: “Señor, aquí tienes tu dinero; lo he tenido guardado, envuelto en un pañuelo. 21 Es que te tenía miedo, porque eres un hombre muy exigente: tomas lo que no depositaste y cosechas lo que no sembraste”. 22 El rey le contestó: “Siervo malo, con tus propias palabras te voy a juzgar. ¿Así que sabías que soy muy exigente, que tomo lo que no deposité y cosecho lo que no sembré? 23 Entonces, ¿por qué no pusiste mi dinero en el banco, para que al regresar pudiera reclamar los intereses?” 24 Dijo luego a los presentes: “Quitadle el dinero y dádselo al que recibió diez veces más”. 25 “Señor —protestaron—, ¡él ya tiene diez veces más!” 26 El rey contestó: “Os aseguro que a todo el que tiene, se le dará más, pero al que no tiene, se le quitará hasta lo que tiene. 27 Pero, en cuanto a esos enemigos míos que no me querían por rey, traedlos aquí y matadlos delante de mí”».
La entrada triunfal(A)(B)
28 Dicho esto, Jesús siguió adelante, subiendo hacia Jerusalén. 29 Cuando se acercó a Betfagué y a Betania, junto al monte llamado de los Olivos, envió a dos de sus discípulos con este encargo: 30 «Id a la aldea que está enfrente y, al entrar en ella, encontraréis atado un burrito en el que nadie se ha montado. Desatadlo y traedlo aquí. 31 Y, si alguien os pregunta: “¿Por qué lo desatáis?”, decidle: “El Señor lo necesita”».
32 Fueron y lo encontraron tal como él les había dicho. 33 Cuando estaban desatando el burrito, los dueños les preguntaron:
―¿Por qué desatáis el burrito?
34 ―El Señor lo necesita —contestaron.
35 Se lo llevaron, pues, a Jesús. Luego pusieron sus mantos encima del burrito y ayudaron a Jesús a montarse. 36 A medida que avanzaba, la gente tendía sus mantos sobre el camino.
37 Al acercarse él a la bajada del monte de los Olivos, todos los discípulos se entusiasmaron y comenzaron a alabar a Dios por tantos milagros que habían visto. Gritaban:
38 ―¡Bendito el Rey que viene en el nombre del Señor![c]
―¡Paz en el cielo y gloria en las alturas!
39 Algunos de los fariseos que estaban entre la gente reclamaron a Jesús:
―¡Maestro, reprende a tus discípulos!
40 Pero él respondió:
―Os aseguro que, si ellos se callan, gritarán las piedras.
Jesús en el templo(C)
41 Cuando se acercaba a Jerusalén, Jesús vio la ciudad y lloró por ella. 42 Dijo:
―¡Cómo quisiera que hoy supieras lo que te puede traer paz! Pero eso ahora está oculto a tus ojos. 43 Te sobrevendrán días en que tus enemigos levantarán un muro y te rodearán, y te encerrarán por todos lados. 44 Te derribarán a ti y a tus hijos dentro de tus murallas. No dejarán ni una piedra sobre otra, porque no reconociste el tiempo en que Dios vino a salvarte.[d]
45 Luego entró en el templo[e] y comenzó a echar de allí a los que estaban vendiendo. 46 «Escrito está —les dijo—: “Mi casa será casa de oración”;[f] pero vosotros la habéis convertido en “cueva de ladrones”».[g]
47 Todos los días enseñaba en el templo, y los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley y los dirigentes del pueblo procuraban matarlo. 48 Sin embargo, no encontraban la manera de hacerlo, porque todo el pueblo lo escuchaba con gran interés.
La autoridad de Jesús puesta en duda(D)
20 Un día, mientras Jesús enseñaba al pueblo en el templo y les predicaba el evangelio, se le acercaron los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley, junto con los ancianos.
2 ―Dinos con qué autoridad haces esto —lo interrogaron—. ¿Quién te dio esa autoridad?
3 ―Yo también voy a haceros una pregunta —replicó él—. Decidme: 4 El bautismo de Juan, ¿procedía del cielo o de la tierra?[h]
5 Ellos, pues, lo discutieron entre sí: «Si respondemos: “Del cielo”, nos dirá: “¿Por qué no le creísteis?” 6 Pero, si decimos: “De la tierra”, todo el pueblo nos apedreará, porque están convencidos de que Juan era un profeta».
Así que le respondieron:
7 ―No sabemos de dónde era.
8 ―Pues yo tampoco os voy a decir con qué autoridad hago esto.
Parábola de los labradores malvados(E)
9 Pasó luego a contarle a la gente esta parábola:
―Un hombre plantó un viñedo, se lo arrendó a unos labradores y se fue de viaje por largo tiempo. 10 Llegada la cosecha, mandó un siervo a los labradores para que le dieran parte de la cosecha. Pero los labradores lo golpearon y lo despidieron con las manos vacías. 11 Envió otro siervo, pero también a este lo golpearon, lo humillaron y lo despidieron con las manos vacías. 12 Entonces envió un tercero, pero aun a este lo hirieron y lo expulsaron.
13 »Entonces pensó el dueño del viñedo: “¿Qué voy a hacer? Enviaré a mi hijo amado; seguro que a él sí lo respetarán”. 14 Pero, cuando lo vieron los labradores, dialogaron entre ellos. “Este es el heredero —dijeron—. Matémoslo, y la herencia será nuestra”. 15 Así que lo arrojaron fuera del viñedo y lo mataron.
»¿Qué les hará el dueño? 16 Volverá, acabará con esos labradores y dará el viñedo a otros».
Al oír esto, la gente exclamó:
―¡Dios no lo quiera!
17 Mirándolos fijamente, Jesús les dijo:
―Entonces, ¿qué significa esto que está escrito:
»“La piedra que desecharon los constructores
ha llegado a ser la piedra angular”?[i]
18 Todo el que caiga sobre esa piedra quedará despedazado y, si ella cae sobre alguien, lo hará polvo».
19 Los maestros de la ley y los jefes de los sacerdotes, cayendo en la cuenta de que la parábola iba dirigida contra ellos, buscaron la manera de echarle mano en aquel mismo momento. Pero temían al pueblo.
El pago de impuestos al césar(F)
20 Entonces, para acecharlo, enviaron espías que fingían ser gente honorable. Pensaban atrapar a Jesús en algo que él dijera, y así poder entregarlo a la jurisdicción del gobernador.
21 ―Maestro —dijeron los espías—, sabemos que lo que dices y enseñas es correcto. No juzgas por las apariencias, sino que de verdad enseñas el camino de Dios. 22 ¿Nos está permitido pagar impuestos al césar o no?
23 Pero Jesús, dándose cuenta de sus malas intenciones, replicó:
24 ―Mostradme una moneda romana.[j] ¿De quién son esta imagen y esta inscripción?
―Del césar —contestaron.
25 ―Entonces dadle al césar lo que es del césar, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.
26 No pudieron atraparlo en lo que decía en público. Así que, admirados de su respuesta, se callaron.
La resurrección y el matrimonio(G)
27 Luego, algunos de los saduceos, que decían que no hay resurrección, se acercaron a Jesús y le plantearon un problema:
28 ―Maestro, Moisés nos enseñó en sus escritos que, si un hombre muere y deja a la viuda sin hijos, el hermano de ese hombre tiene que casarse con la viuda para que su hermano tenga descendencia. 29 Pues bien, había siete hermanos. El primero se casó y murió sin dejar hijos. 30 Entonces el segundo 31 y el tercero se casaron con ella, y así sucesivamente murieron los siete sin dejar hijos. 32 Por último, murió también la mujer. 33 Ahora bien, en la resurrección, ¿de cuál será esposa esta mujer, ya que los siete estuvieron casados con ella?
34 ―La gente de este mundo se casa y se da en casamiento —les contestó Jesús—. 35 Pero en cuanto a los que sean dignos de tomar parte en el mundo venidero por la resurrección: esos no se casarán ni serán dados en casamiento, 36 ni tampoco podrán morir, pues serán como los ángeles. Son hijos de Dios porque toman parte en la resurrección. 37 Pero que los muertos resucitan lo dio a entender Moisés mismo en el pasaje sobre la zarza, pues llama al Señor “el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob”.[k] 38 Él no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos; en efecto, para él todos ellos viven.
39 Algunos de los maestros de la ley le respondieron:
―¡Bien dicho, Maestro!
40 Y ya no se atrevieron a hacerle más preguntas.
¿De quién es hijo el Cristo?(H)
41 Pero Jesús les preguntó:
―¿Cómo es que dicen que el Cristo es el hijo de David? 42 David mismo declara en el libro de los Salmos:
»“Dijo el Señor a mi Señor:
‘Siéntate a mi derecha,
43 hasta que ponga a tus enemigos
por estrado de tus pies’ ”.[l]
44 David lo llama “Señor”. ¿Cómo puede entonces ser su hijo?»
45 Mientras todo el pueblo lo escuchaba, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
46 ―Cuidaos de los maestros de la ley. Les gusta pasearse con ropas ostentosas y les encanta que los saluden en las plazas, y ocupar el primer puesto en las sinagogas y los lugares de honor en los banquetes. 47 Devoran los bienes de las viudas y a la vez hacen largas plegarias para impresionar a los demás. Estos recibirán peor castigo.

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
19 Jesus entered Jericho(A) and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(B) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(C)
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(D)
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(E) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(F) I will pay back four times the amount.”(G)
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(H) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(I)
The Parable of the Ten Minas(J)
11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God(K) was going to appear at once.(L) 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants(M) and gave them ten minas.[a] ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’
14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’
15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’
17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’(N) his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’(O)
18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’
19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’
20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’(P)
22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words,(Q) you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?(R) 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’
25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’
26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.(S) 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(T)(U)
28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.(V) 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany(W) at the hill called the Mount of Olives,(X) he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.(Y) 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks(Z) on the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,(AA) the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”(AC)
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”(AD)
40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”(AE)
41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it(AF) 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.(AG) 44 They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.(AH) They will not leave one stone on another,(AI) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming(AJ) to you.”
Jesus at the Temple(AK)
45 When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. 46 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be a house of prayer’[c];(AL) but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(AM)
47 Every day he was teaching at the temple.(AN) But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.(AO) 48 Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.
The Authority of Jesus Questioned(AP)
20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(AQ) and proclaiming the good news,(AR) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2 “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(AS)
3 He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: 4 John’s baptism(AT)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”
5 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ 6 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(AU) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(AV)
7 So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”
8 Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
The Parable of the Tenants(AW)
9 He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(AX) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(AY) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.
13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(AZ) perhaps they will respect him.’
14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(BA) and give the vineyard to others.”
When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”
17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:
18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(BC)
19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(BD) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(BE)
Paying Taxes to Caesar(BF)
20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(BG) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(BH) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(BI) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(BJ) and to God what is God’s.”
26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
The Resurrection and Marriage(BK)
27 Some of the Sadducees,(BL) who say there is no resurrection,(BM) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(BN) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(BO) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(BP) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[f](BQ) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”
39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(BR)
Whose Son Is the Messiah?(BS)
41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(BT) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[g](BU)
44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(BV) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
