Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
14 And it happened that when He went into the house of one of the [a]leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (A)they were watching Him closely. 2 And behold, in front of Him was a man suffering from dropsy. 3 And Jesus answered and spoke to the (B)scholars of the Law and Pharisees, saying, “(C)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” 4 But they were silent. And He took hold of him, healed him, and sent him away. 5 And He said to them, “[b](D)Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?” 6 (E)And they could make no reply to this.
Parable of the Wedding Feast
7 And He was telling a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how (F)they were picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them, 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, (G)do not recline at the place of honor, lest someone more highly regarded than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then (H)in shame you [c]proceed to occupy the last place. 10 But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, (I)move up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who recline at the table with you. 11 (J)For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
12 And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and that will be your repayment. 13 But when you give a [d]reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, since they [e]do not have the means to repay you; for it will be repaid to you at (K)the resurrection of the righteous.”
15 But when one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “(L)Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
Parable of the Dinner
16 And He said to him, “(M)A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many. 17 And at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is ready now.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a [f]piece of land and I need to go out and look at it. I ask you, consider me excused.’ 19 And another one said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. I ask you, consider me excused.’ 20 And another one said, ‘(N)I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.’ 21 And when the slave came back, he reported these things to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22 And the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and along the [g]fences, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.’”
The Cost of Discipleship
25 Now many crowds were going along with Him, and He turned and said to them, 26 “(O)If anyone comes to Me, and does not [h]hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not (P)carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Lest, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and (Q)consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends [i]a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who (R)does not give up all his own possessions.
34 “Therefore, salt is good, but (S)if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. (T)He who has ears to hear, [j]let him hear.”

14 And it came to pass when he went into a bais of a certain one of the Rashei HaPerushim on Shabbos for betziat halechem, and they were watching him closely,
2 And there in front of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was a certain ish suffering from dropsy,
3 And in reply, Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach spoke to the Baalei Torah and Perushim, saying, Is it mutar (permissible) on Shabbos to give refuah or not?
4 But they kept silent. And having taken hold of him, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach granted him refuah and sent him away.
5 And to them Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said, Who of you having a ben or an ox fall into a well and will not ofen ort (immediately) pull him out on Shabbos?
6 And they were not able to make a counter argument keneged (against) this.
7 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach began speaking a mashal to the seudah (banquet supper) invitees, when he noticed how they had been picking out the rashei hamoshavot (chief seats) at the tish, saying to them,
8 When you are invited by someone to a Chasunoh (wedding), you should not recline at tish in the rashei hamoshavot (chief seats), lest a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by him,
9 And he who invited you both shall come and say to you, Give place to this one, and then in bushah (shame) you proceed to occupy the seat of humiliation, the low seat.
10 But when you are invited, go and recline at tish in the moshav hashafel (low seat), so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, Chaver, move up to a higher place; then you will have kavod in the sight of all with you at the tish.
11 For everyone exalting himself shall be humbled, and the one humbling himself shall be exalted.
12 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was speaking also to the one who invited him, When you prepare a seudah or a Melave Malkah, do not invite your chaverim or your achim or your krovey mishpochot (relatives) or your shchenim haashirim, lest they also should invite you in return and repayment come to you.
13 But when you prepare a seudah (feast), invite the aniyim (the poor), the baalei hamum (the maimed), the pisechim (the lame), the ivrim (blind),
14 And Birkat Shomayim (the Blessing of Heaven) will befall you, because they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid in the Yom Tekumat HaTzadikkim (Day of the Resurrection of the Righteous, Rev 20:5).
15 And when a certain one of those reclining at tish with Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach heard these things, he said to him, Ashrey is he who will eat lechem in the Malchut Hashem! [YESHAYAH 25:6]
16 But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach said to him, A certain man was preparing a big seudah, and he invited many;
17 And at the dinner hour, he sent his eved to say to the seudah invitees, Come, because everything is ready now.
18 But each began to come up with a teretz (excuse). The rishon (first) said to him, I bought a sadeh (field) and I am compelled to go out and look at it. Please be mekabel (receive, accept) my teretz.
19 And another said, I have bought chamesh pair of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please be mekabel my teretz (excuse).
20 And another said, I took a wife and therefore I am not able to come.
21 And the eved returned and reported this to his Adon. Then the Baal Bayit became angry and said to his eved, Go out quickly into the rekhovot (streets) and lanes of the shtetl and bring in here the aniyim (the poor) and the baalei hamum (the maimed) and the ivrim (blind) and the pisechim (the lame).
22 And the eved said, Adoni, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.
23 And the Adon said to the eved, Go out to the rekhovot and along the boundaries and urge them to come in, in order that My Beis may be filled.
24 For I say to you that no one of those Bnei Adam who were invited will taste my seudah.
25 And large multitudes were accompanying him, and Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach turned and said to them,
26 If someone comes to me, and does not hate [hyperbolically, in comparison to Moshiach] his own Abba and Em (mother) and isha and yeladim and achim and achayot and in addition also his own life [in the Olam Hazeh], he is not able to be my [Moshiach’s] talmid.
27 Whoever does not carry his own etz [of self denial] and come after me [Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach] is not able to be my [Moshiach’s] talmid.
28 For who among you, wanting to build a migdal (tower), will not first sit down and rechen (calculate) the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?
29 Otherwise, having laid his yesod (foundation) and not being able to finish it, everyone seeing it may begin to make leitzonus (fun, mockery) of him,
30 Saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish.
31 Or what melech, going out to make milchamah (war) against another melech, will not first sit down and consider if he is able with aseret alafim (ten thousand) to meet the one with esrim elef (twenty thousand) coming against him?
32 Or else, while the other is noch (yet) far away, he sends an embassy delegation and seeks terms for shalom.
33 So, then, none of you can become my talmid if you do not renounce all your [idolatrous] holdings.
34 Therefore, melach (salt) is tov; but if even melach should become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?
35 It is useless either for the land or for the dung hill; they throw it away. The one who has ears to hear, shema!

Jesús sana a un enfermo de hidropesía
14 Sucedió que un sábado Jesús fue a comer a casa de un jefe fariseo, y otros fariseos lo estaban espiando. 2 También estaba allí, delante de él, un hombre enfermo de hidropesía. 3 Jesús les preguntó a los maestros de la ley y a los fariseos:
—¿Se permite sanar en sábado a un enfermo, o no?
4 Pero ellos se quedaron callados. Entonces él tomó al enfermo, lo sanó y le dijo que se fuera. 5 Y a los fariseos les dijo:
—¿Quién de ustedes, si su hijo o su buey se cae a un pozo, no lo saca en seguida, aunque sea sábado?
6 Y no pudieron contestarle nada.
Los invitados a un banquete
7 Al ver Jesús cómo los invitados escogían los asientos de honor en la mesa, les dio este consejo:
8 —Cuando alguien te invite a un banquete de bodas, no te sientes en el lugar principal, pues puede llegar otro invitado más importante que tú; 9 y el que los invitó a los dos puede venir a decirte: “Dale tu lugar a este otro.” Entonces tendrás que ir con vergüenza a ocupar el último asiento. 10 Al contrario, cuando te inviten, siéntate en el último lugar, para que cuando venga el que te invitó, te diga: “Amigo, pásate a un lugar de más honor.” Así recibirás honores delante de los que están sentados contigo a la mesa. 11 Porque el que a sí mismo se engrandece, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será engrandecido.
12 Dijo también al hombre que lo había invitado:
—Cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a tus vecinos ricos; porque ellos, a su vez, te invitarán, y así quedarás ya recompensado. 13 Al contrario, cuando tú des un banquete, invita a los pobres, los inválidos, los cojos y los ciegos; 14 y serás feliz. Pues ellos no te pueden pagar, pero tú tendrás tu recompensa el día en que los justos resuciten.
La parábola de la gran cena(A)
15 Al oír esto, uno de los que estaban sentados a la mesa le dijo a Jesús:
—¡Dichoso el que participe del banquete del reino de Dios!
16 Jesús le dijo:
—Un hombre dio una gran cena, y mandó invitar a muchas personas. 17 A la hora de la cena mandó a su criado a decir a los invitados: “Vengan, porque ya la cena está lista.” 18 Pero todos comenzaron a disculparse. El primero dijo: “Acabo de comprar un terreno, y tengo que ir a verlo. Te ruego que me disculpes.” 19 Otro dijo: “He comprado cinco yuntas de bueyes, y voy a probarlas. Te ruego que me disculpes.” 20 Y otro dijo: “Acabo de casarme, y no puedo ir.” 21 El criado regresó y se lo contó todo a su amo. Entonces el amo se enojó, y le dijo al criado: “Ve pronto por las calles y los callejones de la ciudad, y trae acá a los pobres, los inválidos, los ciegos y los cojos.” 22 Más tarde, el criado dijo: “Señor, ya hice lo que usted me mandó, y todavía hay lugar.” 23 Entonces el amo le dijo al criado: “Ve por los caminos y los cercados, y obliga a otros a entrar, para que se llene mi casa. 24 Porque les digo que ninguno de aquellos primeros invitados comerá de mi cena.”

25 Mucha gente seguía a Jesús; y él se volvió y dijo: 26 «Si alguno viene a mí y no me ama más que a su padre, a su madre, a su esposa, a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y a sus hermanas, y aun más que a sí mismo, no puede ser mi discípulo. 27 Y el que no toma su propia cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo. 28 Si alguno de ustedes quiere construir una torre, ¿acaso no se sienta primero a calcular los gastos, para ver si tiene con qué terminarla? 29 De otra manera, si pone los cimientos y después no puede terminarla, todos los que lo vean comenzarán a burlarse de él, 30 diciendo: “Este hombre empezó a construir, pero no pudo terminar.” 31 O si algún rey tiene que ir a la guerra contra otro rey, ¿acaso no se sienta primero a calcular si con diez mil soldados puede hacer frente a quien va a atacarlo con veinte mil? 32 Y si no puede hacerle frente, cuando el otro rey esté todavía lejos, le mandará mensajeros a pedir la paz. 33 Así pues, cualquiera de ustedes que no deje todo lo que tiene, no puede ser mi discípulo.

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House(A)
14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,(B) he was being carefully watched.(C) 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,(D) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(E) 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.
5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[a] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”(F) 6 And they had nothing to say.
7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table,(G) he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(H)
12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,(I) 14 and you will be blessed. The Parable of the Great Banquet(K)
15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast(L) in the kingdom of God.”(M)
16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’(N)
22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”(O)
The Cost of Being a Disciple
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.(P) 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.(Q)
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.(R)
34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?(S) 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.(T)
“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(U)
