The Seventy-Two Appointed and Sent Out

10 And after these things, the Lord also[a] appointed seventy-two others and sent them out two by two before him[b] into every town and place where he was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest that he send out workers into his harvest. 3 Go! Behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves! 4 Do not carry a money bag or a traveler’s bag or sandals, and greet no one along the road. 5 And into whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace be to this household!” 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide,[c] for the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not move from house to house. 8 And into whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat whatever is[d] set before you, 9 and heal the sick in it, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” 10 But into whatever town you enter and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and[e] say, 11 “Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you! Nevertheless know this: that the kingdom of God has come near!”[f] 12 I tell you that it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town!

13 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes! 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and for Sidon in the judgment than for you! 15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No! You will be brought down to Hades! 16 The one who listens to you listens to me, and the one who rejects you rejects me. But the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

17 And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 So he said to them, “I saw Satan falling like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you the authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will ever harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are inscribed in heaven.”

Jesus Rejoices and Prays

21 At that same time he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to young children. Yes, Father, for this was pleasing before you. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wants to reveal him.”[g]

23 And turning to the disciples, he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see the things which you see, and did not see them,[h] and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”[i]

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 And behold, a certain legal expert stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do so that I will inherit eternal life?” 26 And he said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”[j] 27 And he answered and[k] said, “You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind,[l] and your neighbor as yourself.”[m] 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 And[n] Jesus replied and[o] said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who both stripped him and beat him.[p] After[q] inflicting blows on him,[r] they went away, leaving him[s] half dead. 31 Now by coincidence a certain priest was going down on that road, and when he[t] saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 And in the same way also a Levite, when he[u] came down to the place[v] and saw him,[w] passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a certain Samaritan who was traveling came up to him and, when he[x] saw him,[y] had compassion. 34 And he came up and[z] bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine, and he put him on his own animal and[aa] brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And on the next day, he took out two denarii and[ab] gave them[ac][ad] to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him, and whatever you spend in addition, I will repay to you when I return. 36 Which of these three do you suppose became a neighbor of the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 So he said, “The one who showed mercy to him.” And Jesus said to him, “You go and do likewise.”

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they traveled along, he entered into a certain village. And a certain woman named[ae] Martha welcomed him.[af] 39 And she had[ag] a sister named Mary, who also sat at the feet of Jesus[ah] and[ai] was listening to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much preparation, so she approached and[aj] said, “Lord, is it not a concern to you that my sister has left me alone to make preparations? Then tell her that she should help me!” 41 But the Lord answered and[ak] said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things! 42 But few things are necessary, or only one thing,[al] for Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

10 Après cela, le Seigneur désigna encore soixante-dix autres disciples, et il les envoya deux à deux devant lui dans toutes les villes et dans tous les lieux où lui-même devait aller.

2 Il leur dit: La moisson est grande, mais il y a peu d'ouvriers. Priez donc le maître de la moisson d'envoyer des ouvriers dans sa moisson.

3 Partez; voici, je vous envoie comme des agneaux au milieu des loups.

4 Ne portez ni bourse, ni sac, ni souliers, et ne saluez personne en chemin.

5 Dans quelque maison que vous entriez, dites d'abord: Que la paix soit sur cette maison!

6 Et s'il se trouve là un enfant de paix, votre paix reposera sur lui; sinon, elle reviendra à vous.

7 Demeurez dans cette maison-là, mangeant et buvant ce qu'on vous donnera; car l'ouvrier mérite son salaire. N'allez pas de maison en maison.

8 Dans quelque ville que vous entriez, et où l'on vous recevra, mangez ce qui vous sera présenté,

9 guérissez les malades qui s'y trouveront, et dites-leur: Le royaume de Dieu s'est approché de vous.

10 Mais dans quelque ville que vous entriez, et où l'on ne vous recevra pas, allez dans ses rues, et dites:

11 Nous secouons contre vous la poussière même de votre ville qui s'est attachée à nos pieds; sachez cependant que le royaume de Dieu s'est approché.

12 Je vous dis qu'en ce jour Sodome sera traitée moins rigoureusement que cette ville-là.

13 Malheur à toi, Chorazin! malheur à toi, Bethsaïda! car, si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous avaient été faits dans Tyr et dans Sidon, il y a longtemps qu'elles se seraient repenties, en prenant le sac et la cendre.

14 C'est pourquoi, au jour du jugement, Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins rigoureusement que vous.

15 Et toi, Capernaüm, qui as été élevée jusqu'au ciel, tu seras abaissée jusqu'au séjour des morts.

16 Celui qui vous écoute m'écoute, et celui qui vous rejette me rejette; et celui qui me rejette rejette celui qui m'a envoyé.

17 Les soixante-dix revinrent avec joie, disant: Seigneur, les démons mêmes nous sont soumis en ton nom.

18 Jésus leur dit: Je voyais Satan tomber du ciel comme un éclair.

19 Voici, je vous ai donné le pouvoir de marcher sur les serpents et les scorpions, et sur toute la puissance de l'ennemi; et rien ne pourra vous nuire.

20 Cependant, ne vous réjouissez pas de ce que les esprits vous sont soumis; mais réjouissez-vous de ce que vos noms sont écrits dans les cieux.

21 En ce moment même, Jésus tressaillit de joie par le Saint Esprit, et il dit: Je te loue, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents, et de ce que tu les as révélées aux enfants. Oui, Père, je te loue de ce que tu l'as voulu ainsi.

22 Toutes choses m'ont été données par mon Père, et personne ne connaît qui est le Fils, si ce n'est le Père, ni qui est le Père, si ce n'est le Fils et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.

23 Et, se tournant vers les disciples, il leur dit en particulier: Heureux les yeux qui voient ce que vous voyez!

24 Car je vous dis que beaucoup de prophètes et de rois ont désiré voir ce que vous voyez, et ne l'ont pas vu, entendre ce que vous entendez, et ne l'ont pas entendu.

25 Un docteur de la loi se leva, et dit à Jésus, pour l'éprouver: Maître, que dois-je faire pour hériter la vie éternelle?

26 Jésus lui dit: Qu'est-il écrit dans la loi? Qu'y lis-tu?

27 Il répondit: Tu aimeras le Seigneur, ton Dieu, de tout ton coeur, de toute ton âme, de toute ta force, et de toute ta pensée; et ton prochain comme toi-même.

28 Tu as bien répondu, lui dit Jésus; fais cela, et tu vivras.

29 Mais lui, voulant se justifier, dit à Jésus: Et qui est mon prochain?

30 Jésus reprit la parole, et dit: Un homme descendait de Jérusalem à Jéricho. Il tomba au milieu des brigands, qui le dépouillèrent, le chargèrent de coups, et s'en allèrent, le laissant à demi mort.

31 Un sacrificateur, qui par hasard descendait par le même chemin, ayant vu cet homme, passa outre.

32 Un Lévite, qui arriva aussi dans ce lieu, l'ayant vu, passa outre.

33 Mais un Samaritain, qui voyageait, étant venu là, fut ému de compassion lorsqu'il le vit.

34 Il s'approcha, et banda ses plaies, en y versant de l'huile et du vin; puis il le mit sur sa propre monture, le conduisit à une hôtellerie, et prit soin de lui.

35 Le lendemain, il tira deux deniers, les donna à l'hôte, et dit: Aie soin de lui, et ce que tu dépenseras de plus, je te le rendrai à mon retour.

36 Lequel de ces trois te semble avoir été le prochain de celui qui était tombé au milieu des brigands?

37 C'est celui qui a exercé la miséricorde envers lui, répondit le docteur de la loi. Et Jésus lui dit: Va, et toi, fais de même.

38 Comme Jésus était en chemin avec ses disciples, il entra dans un village, et une femme, nommée Marthe, le reçut dans sa maison.

39 Elle avait une soeur, nommée Marie, qui, s'étant assise aux pieds du Seigneur, écoutait sa parole.

40 Marthe, occupée à divers soins domestiques, survint et dit: Seigneur, cela ne te fait-il rien que ma soeur me laisse seule pour servir? Dis-lui donc de m'aider.

41 Le Seigneur lui répondit: Marthe, Marthe, tu t'inquiètes et tu t'agites pour beaucoup de choses.

42 Une seule chose est nécessaire. Marie a choisi la bonne part, qui ne lui sera point ôtée.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(J) Do not move around from house to house.

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(AF)

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[c];(AG) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]”(AH)

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(AI)

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(AM) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(AN) who sat at the Lord’s feet(AO) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(AP) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(AQ) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f](AR) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

10 (A) Därefter utsåg Herren sjuttio[a] andra och sände dem framför sig två och två till varje stad och plats dit han själv skulle komma. 2 (B) Han sade till dem: "Skörden är stor, men arbetarna är få. Be därför skördens Herre att han skickar ut arbetare till sin skörd. 3 Gå! Se, jag sänder er som lamm in bland vargar. 4 (C) Ta inte med er någon börs eller väska eller några sandaler, och hälsa inte på någon längs vägen.

5 När ni kommer in i ett hus, säg då först: Frid över detta hus. 6 Om där bor en fridens man ska er frid vila över honom. Annars ska den återvända till er. 7 (D) Stanna i det huset och ät och drick vad ni får, för arbetaren är värd sin lön. Flytta inte från hus till hus. 8 Och när ni kommer till en stad där man tar emot er, så ät det som sätts fram åt er[b]. 9 (E) Bota de sjuka i staden och säg till folket: Guds rike är nära er.

10 (F) Men om ni kommer till en stad där man inte tar emot er, gå då ut på gatorna och säg: 11 Till och med dammet som har fastnat på våra fötter i er stad torkar vi av för att vittna mot er. Men ni ska veta att Guds rike är nära. 12 Jag säger er: Sodom ska på den dagen få det lindrigare än den staden.

13 Ve dig, Korasin! Ve dig, Betsaida! För om kraftgärningarna som gjorts i er hade gjorts i Tyrus och Sidon, skulle de för länge sedan ha omvänt sig och suttit i säck och aska[c]. 14 Men Tyrus och Sidon ska få det lindrigare vid domen än ni. 15 (G) Och du, Kapernaum, ska du bli upphöjd till himlen? Nej, du ska ner i helvetet[d]. 16 (H) Den som lyssnar till er lyssnar till mig, och den som förkastar er förkastar mig. Och den som förkastar mig, han förkastar honom som har sänt mig."

17 De sjuttio kom glada tillbaka och berättade: "Herre, till och med de onda andarna lyder oss i ditt namn." 18 (I) Han sade till dem: "Jag såg Satan falla ner från himlen som en blixt. 19 (J) Se, jag har gett er makt att trampa på ormar och skorpioner och över fiendens hela välde. Ingenting ska någonsin skada er. 20 (K) Men gläd er inte över att andarna lyder er, utan gläd er över att era namn är skrivna i himlen."

21 (L) I samma stund jublade Jesus i den helige Ande och sade: "Jag prisar dig Far, himlens och jordens Herre, för att du har dolt detta för de visa och kloka och uppenbarat det för små barn. Ja, Far, så var din goda vilja. 22 (M) Allt har min Far överlämnat åt mig. Och ingen vet vem Sonen är utom Fadern, eller vem Fadern är utom Sonen och den som Sonen vill uppenbara det för."

23 (N) När de var ensamma vände sig Jesus till lärjungarna och sade: "Saliga är de ögon som ser vad ni ser. 24 (O) Jag säger er: Många profeter och kungar ville se vad ni ser men fick inte se det, och höra vad ni hör men fick inte höra det."

Den barmhärtige samariern

25 (P) Sedan kom en laglärd fram för att pröva honom och frågade: "Mästare, vad ska jag göra för att få evigt liv?" 26 Jesus sade till honom: "Vad står det skrivet i lagen? Hur läser du där?" 27 Han svarade: "Du ska älska Herren din Gud av hela ditt hjärta och av hela din själ och av hela din kraft och av hela ditt förstånd, och din nästa som dig själv."[e] 28 (Q) Jesus sade till honom: "Du svarade rätt. Gör det, så får du leva."

29 Då ville mannen rättfärdiga sig och frågade Jesus: "Vem är då min nästa?" 30 Jesus svarade: "En man var på väg från Jerusalem ner till Jeriko och råkade ut för rövare. De slet av honom kläderna och misshandlade honom, och sedan försvann de och lämnade honom där halvdöd.

31 En präst råkade komma ner samma väg, och när han fick se mannen gick han förbi. 32 På samma sätt var det med en levit[f]. Han kom till platsen, såg mannen och gick förbi.

33 Men en samarier[g] som var på resa kom också dit, och när han såg mannen förbarmade han sig över honom. 34 Han gick fram och hällde olja och vin[h] i hans sår och förband dem. Sedan lyfte han upp honom på sin åsna, tog honom till ett värdshus och skötte om honom. 35 Nästa dag tog han fram två denarer[i] och gav till värdshusvärden och sade: Sköt om honom. Och kostar det mer ska jag betala när jag kommer tillbaka. 36 Vem av dessa tre tycker du var en nästa för mannen som råkade ut för rövare?" 37 Han svarade: "Den som visade barmhärtighet mot honom." Då sade Jesus till honom: "Gå du och gör som han."

Jesus hos Marta och Maria

38 (R) Medan de var på väg kom Jesus in i en by, och en kvinna som hette Marta tog emot honom i sitt hem[j]. 39 Hon hade en syster, Maria, som satte sig vid Herrens fötter och lyssnade till hans ord. 40 Marta däremot var upptagen med alla förberedelser[k], och hon kom fram och sade: "Herre, bryr du dig inte om att min syster har lämnat mig att sköta allting själv? Säg nu till henne att hon hjälper mig." 41 Herren svarade henne: "Marta, Marta, du bekymrar dig och oroar dig för så mycket. 42 (S) Men bara ett är nödvändigt. Maria har valt den goda delen, och den ska inte tas ifrån henne."

  9. 10:35 två denarer   Motsvarade två dagslöner för den enkle arbetaren (Matt 20:2).

  11. 10:40 alla förberedelser   Ordagrant: "mycket tjänande".
