Jesus wird für seinen Dienst vorbereitet (Kapitel 3,1–4,13)
Johannes der Täufer ruft: »Kehrt um zu Gott!« (Matthäus 3,1‒12; Markus 1,1‒8)
3 Es war im 15. Regierungsjahr von Kaiser Tiberius. Pontius Pilatus verwaltete als Statthalter die Provinz Judäa; Herodes[a] herrschte über Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus über Ituräa und Trachonitis, und Lysanias regierte in Abilene; 2 Hannas und später Kaiphas waren die Hohenpriester. In dieser Zeit sprach Gott zu Johannes, dem Sohn von Zacharias, der in der Wüste lebte.
3 Da machte sich Johannes auf den Weg und zog durch das ganze Gebiet am Jordan. Überall forderte er die Leute auf: »Kehrt um zu Gott und lasst euch von mir taufen! Dann wird er euch eure Sünden vergeben.«[b] 4 So erfüllte sich, was im Buch des Propheten Jesaja steht:
»Jemand ruft in der Wüste: ›Macht den Weg frei für den Herrn! Räumt alle Hindernisse weg! 5 Jedes Tal soll aufgefüllt, jeder Berg und Hügel abgetragen werden, krumme Wege sollen begradigt und holprige Wege eben werden! 6 Dann werden alle Menschen sehen, wie Gott Rettung bringt!‹«[c]
7 Die Menschen kamen in Scharen zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen. Aber er hielt ihnen entgegen: »Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch auf den Gedanken gebracht, ihr könntet dem kommenden Gericht Gottes entrinnen? 8 Zeigt durch Taten, dass ihr wirklich zu Gott umkehren wollt! Bildet euch nur nicht ein, ihr könntet euch damit herausreden: ›Abraham ist unser Vater!‹ Ich sage euch: Gott kann selbst aus diesen Steinen hier Nachkommen für Abraham hervorbringen.
9 Schon ist die Axt erhoben, um die Bäume an der Wurzel abzuschlagen. Jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.«
10 Da wollten die Leute wissen: »Was sollen wir denn tun?« 11 Johannes antwortete: »Wer zwei Hemden hat, soll dem eins geben, der keins besitzt. Und wer etwas zu essen hat, soll seine Mahlzeit mit den Hungrigen teilen.«
12 Es kamen auch Zolleinnehmer, die sich taufen lassen wollten. Sie fragten: »Lehrer, und wir? Wie sollen wir uns verhalten?« 13 Johannes wies sie an: »Verlangt nur so viel Zollgebühren, wie ihr fordern dürft!«
14 »Und was sollen wir tun?«, erkundigten sich einige Soldaten. »Plündert nicht und erpresst niemand! Seid zufrieden mit eurem Sold«, antwortete ihnen Johannes.
15 Die Leute ahnten, dass bald etwas geschehen würde, und alle fragten sich, ob nicht Johannes der Christus, der ersehnte Retter, sei. 16 Doch Johannes erklärte öffentlich: »Ich taufe euch mit Wasser, aber nach mir wird ein anderer kommen, der viel mächtiger ist als ich. Ich bin nicht einmal würdig, ihm die Schuhe auszuziehen[d]. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.[e]
17 Er hat schon die Schaufel in seiner Hand, mit der er die Spreu vom Weizen trennt. Den Weizen wird er in seine Scheune bringen, die Spreu aber wird er in einem Feuer verbrennen, das nie verlöscht.«
18 So verkündete Johannes den Menschen die rettende Botschaft Gottes und ermahnte sie darüber hinaus mit vielen anderen Worten. 19 Auch Herodes, den Herrscher von Galiläa, wies er scharf zurecht. Denn dieser lebte mit Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders, zusammen. Er schreckte vor keinem Verbrechen zurück. 20 Am Ende ging er so weit, dass er Johannes ins Gefängnis werfen ließ.
Jesus lässt sich taufen (Matthäus 3,13‒17; Markus 1,9‒11; Johannes 1,32)
21 Als Johannes wieder einmal viele Menschen taufte, kam auch Jesus und ließ sich taufen. Während er betete, öffnete sich der Himmel, 22 und der Heilige Geist kam wie eine Taube sichtbar auf ihn herab. Gleichzeitig sprach eine Stimme vom Himmel: »Du bist mein geliebter Sohn, über den ich mich von Herzen freue.«
Von Adam bis Jesus (Matthäus 1,1‒17)
23 Jesus trat zum ersten Mal öffentlich auf, als er ungefähr 30 Jahre alt war. Die Leute kannten ihn als den Sohn von Josef. Josefs Vater war Eli, und dessen Vorfahren waren:

Johannes der Täufer - der Wegbereiter
3 Im fünfzehnten Jahre aber der Regierung des Kaisers Tiberius, - als Pontius Pilatus Landpfleger von Judäa war und Herodes Vierfürst von Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus aber Vierfürst der Landschaft Ituräa und Trachonitis[a] und Lysanias Vierfürst von Abilene[b], 2 unter den Hohenpriestern Hannas und Kajaphas - , erging das Wort Gottes an Johannes, den Sohn des Zacharias, in der Wüste.
3 Und er kam in die ganze Umgegend des Jordan und predigte die Taufe der Buße zur Vergebung der Sünden, 4 wie geschrieben steht im Buche der Reden des Propheten Jesaja, der da spricht:
Eine Stimme ruft in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, macht seine Pfade eben!
5 Jedes Tal soll ausgefüllt und jeder Berg und Hügel erniedrigt werden, und das Krumme soll gerade und die rauhen Wege eben werden,
6 und alles Fleisch wird das Heil Gottes sehen.“
7 Er sprach nun zu dem Volke, das hinausging, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen: Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch unterwiesen, dem kommenden Zorn zu entrinnen? 8 So bringet nun Früchte, die der Buße würdig sind, und fanget nicht an, bei euch selbst zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater! Denn ich sage euch, Gott vermag dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken. 9 Schon ist aber die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt. Ein jeder Baum nun, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
10 Da fragte ihn das Volk und sprach: Was sollen wir denn tun? 11 Und er antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Röcke hat, gebe dem, der keinen hat; und wer Speise hat, tue ebenso!
12 Es kamen auch Zöllner, um sich taufen zu lassen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen wir tun? 13 Er sprach zu ihnen: Fordert nicht mehr, als was euch verordnet ist!
14 Es fragten ihn aber auch Kriegsleute und sprachen: Und was sollen wir tun? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Mißhandelt niemand, erhebet keine falsche Anklage und seid zufrieden mit eurem Sold!
15 Da aber das Volk in Erwartung stand und alle in ihren Herzen sich wegen Johannes fragten, ob er selbst vielleicht der Christus wäre, 16 antwortete Johannes und sprach zu allen: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber einer, der stärker ist als ich, dem ich nicht gut genug bin, den Riemen seiner Schuhe zu lösen; der wird euch im heiligen Geist und Feuer taufen. 17 Er hat die Worfschaufel in seiner Hand, um seine Tenne durch und durch zu reinigen und den Weizen in seine Scheune zu sammeln; die Spreu aber wird er mit unauslöschlichem Feuer verbrennen.
18 Auch mit vielen andern Ermahnungen noch verkündigte er dem Volk die frohe Botschaft. 19 Der Vierfürst Herodes aber, da er von ihm getadelt wurde wegen Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders Philippus, und wegen all des Bösen, was Herodes tat, 20 fügte zu allem noch das hinzu, daß er den Johannes ins Gefängnis schloß.
Die Taufe Jesu Christi
21 Es begab sich aber, da alles Volk sich taufen ließ und auch Jesus getauft wurde und betete, daß sich der Himmel auftat 22 und der heilige Geist in leiblicher Gestalt wie eine Taube auf ihn herabstieg und eine Stimme aus dem Himmel erscholl: Du bist mein geliebter Sohn; an dir habe ich Wohlgefallen!

3 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3 He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
‘Make ready the way of the Lord.
Make his paths straight.
5 Every valley will be filled.
Every mountain and hill will be brought low.
The crooked will become straight,
and the rough ways smooth.
6 All flesh will see God’s salvation.’”(A)
7 He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones! 9 Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?”
11 He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”
12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?”
13 He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.”
14 Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?”
He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.”
15 As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ, 16 John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
18 Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people, 19 but Herod the tetrarch,[a] being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s[b] wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, 20 added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized and was praying. The sky was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.”

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)
10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)
