Het verhaal van de vijgenboom zonder vijgen

13 Er kwamen een paar mensen naar Jezus toe. Ze vertelden Hem dat een aantal bewoners van Galilea door Pilatus was gedood, toen ze in de tempel offers aan het brengen waren. 2 Hij antwoordde hun: "Denken jullie dat dit met hen is gebeurd omdat ze slechter waren dan de andere bewoners van Galilea? 3 Nee dat is niet zo. Maar Ik zeg jullie dat het met jullie óók slecht zal aflopen, als jullie niet gaan leven zoals God het wil. 4 En denken jullie dat de 18 mensen die werden gedood toen de toren van Siloam instortte, slechtere dingen hadden gedaan dan de andere mensen die in Jeruzalem wonen? 5 Nee dat is niet zo. Maar Ik zeg jullie dat het met jullie óók slecht zal aflopen, als jullie niet gaan leven zoals God het wil."

6 Jezus legde hun dit uit met een verhaal: "Er was iemand die in zijn wijngaard een vijgenboom had geplant. Op een dag ging hij kijken of er al vijgen aan zaten. Maar hij vond niets. 7 Toen zei hij tegen de tuinman: 'Ik kom nu al voor het derde jaar kijken of er vijgen aan deze boom zitten, en ik vind er nooit één. Hak hem nu maar om! Waarom zou hij een stuk grond in beslag nemen als dat helemaal geen nut heeft?' 8 De tuinman antwoordde hem: 'Heer, laat hem dit jaar nog staan. Dan zal ik eerst nog eens de grond omspitten en er mest bij doen. 9 Als er dan het volgende jaar vijgen aan zitten, is het goed. Maar als hij dan nóg geen vijgen krijgt, moet u hem maar omhakken.' "

Jezus geneest een vrouw op de heilige rustdag

10 Op een keer was Jezus weer aan het lesgeven in een synagoge. 11 Er was daar ook een vrouw die al 18 jaar een geest van zwakte had. Daardoor was ze helemaal krom gegroeid. Ze kon niet meer rechtop staan. 12 Toen Jezus haar zag, riep Hij haar bij Zich. En Hij zei tegen haar: "Vrouw, je bent bevrijd van je zwakte." 13 Hij legde haar de handen op. Onmiddellijk ging ze rechtop staan en ze prees God. 14 Maar de leider van de synagoge was boos omdat Jezus dit op de heilige rustdag deed. Hij zei tegen de mensen: "Er zijn zes dagen in de week om te werken. Kom dán om je te laten genezen, maar níet op de heilige rustdag!" 15 Maar de Heer Jezus zei: "Wat ben je toch schijnheilig! Jullie werken zelf óók op de heilige rustdag! Iedereen maakt toch op de heilige rustdag zijn os of zijn ezel los van de voerbak om hem mee te nemen om hem te laten drinken? 16 Deze vrouw, die een dochter van Abraham is,[a] werd al 18 jaar door de duivel gebonden gehouden. Moest ze daar dan niet van losgemaakt worden op de heilige rustdag?" 17 Toen Hij dit zei, schaamden de mensen zich die het er eerst niet mee eens waren dat Jezus de vrouw genas. En iedereen was blij over de geweldige dingen die Hij deed.

Het Koninkrijk van God

18 Toen zei Jezus: "Waar lijkt het Koninkrijk van God op? Waar zou Ik het mee kunnen vergelijken? 19 Het lijkt op een mosterdzaadje dat door iemand in zijn tuin werd gezaaid. Het groeide en groeide en werd een boom. En de vogels bouwden hun nesten tussen de takken."

20 Opnieuw zei Hij: "Waar zal Ik het Koninkrijk van God mee vergelijken? 21 Het lijkt op een beetje gist dat door een vrouw in een grote hoeveelheid meel werd gedaan. Door dat kleine beetje gist, gistte al het deeg."

22 En Hij reisde langs de steden en dorpen naar Jeruzalem en vertelde overal het goede nieuws aan de mensen.

Wie worden er gered?

23 Iemand vroeg aan Jezus: "Heer, wordt er maar een klein aantal mensen gered?" 24 Hij antwoordde: "Doe je uiterste best om het Koninkrijk binnen te gaan. Want de poort daarheen is maar smal. Ik zeg jullie dat heel veel mensen zullen proberen om naar binnen te gaan. Maar bij veel van hen zal dat niet lukken. 25 Op een dag zal de Heer van het huis opstaan en de poortdeuren dichtdoen. Dan zullen jullie buiten staan. Jullie zullen op de deur gaan kloppen en zeggen: 'Heer, doe open!' Maar Hij zal tegen jullie zeggen: 'Ik ken jullie niet.' 26 Dan zullen jullie zeggen: 'Heer, we hebben met U gegeten en gedronken! U gaf les in onze straten!' 27 Maar Hij zal tegen jullie zeggen: 'Ik ken jullie niet. Ga weg! Jullie waren altijd ongehoorzaam aan God!' 28 Dan zullen jullie huilen en met je tanden knarsen van spijt. Want jullie zullen Abraham en Izaäk en Jakob en alle profeten in het Koninkrijk van God zien, maar zelf niet naar binnen mogen. 29 Er zullen mensen uit het oosten en westen en noorden en zuiden komen, en ze zullen aan tafel gaan in het Koninkrijk van God. 30 En veel mensen die nu het eerst zijn, zullen straks het laatst zijn. En veel mensen die nu het laatst zijn, zullen straks het eerst zijn."[b]

Jezus en Jeruzalem

31 Een paar Farizeeërs kwamen Jezus waarschuwen: "U moet hier weggaan, want koning Herodes wil U doden." 32 Jezus zei tegen hen: "Zeg tegen die vos: 'Ik jaag duivelse geesten weg uit de mensen en genees zieken. Dat doe Ik vandaag en morgen en op de derde dag ben Ik klaar. 33 Maar vandaag en morgen en overmorgen moet Ik reizen. Want het is niet goed als een profeet buiten Jeruzalem wordt gedood. 34 Jeruzalem, Jeruzalem! Jij doodt de profeten. En de mensen die naar je toe gestuurd zijn, gooi jij met stenen dood! Ik heb zó vaak je bewoners bij Mij willen verzamelen, zoals een kip haar kuikens onder haar vleugels verzamelt! Maar je hebt nooit gewild. 35 Daarom zal er niemand in je overblijven! Ik zeg je dat je Mij niet meer zal zien tot het moment dat je zal zeggen: 'Gods zegen op Hem die door de Heer is gestuurd!' "

Urgencia de la conversión

13 Por aquel mismo tiempo se presentaron unos a Jesús y le hablaron de aquellos galileos a quienes Pilato había hecho matar cuando ofrecían el sacrificio, mezclando así su sangre con la de los animales sacrificados. 2 Jesús dijo:

— ¿Creéis vosotros que esos galileos sufrieron tal suerte porque fueran más pecadores que los demás galileos? 3 Pues yo os digo que no. Y añadiré que, si no os convertís, todos vosotros pereceréis igualmente. 4 ¿O creéis que aquellos dieciocho que murieron al derrumbarse la torre de Siloé eran más culpables que los demás habitantes de Jerusalén? 5 Pues yo os digo que no. Y añadiré que, si no os convertís, todos vosotros pereceréis de forma semejante.

Parábola de la higuera estéril

6 Jesús les contó entonces esta parábola:

— Un hombre había plantado una higuera en su viña; pero cuando fue a buscar higos en ella, no encontró ninguno. 7 Entonces dijo al que cuidaba la viña: “Ya hace tres años que vengo en busca de higos a esta higuera, y nunca los encuentro. Así que córtala, para que no ocupe terreno inútilmente”. 8 Pero el viñador le contestó: “Señor, déjala un año más. Cavaré la tierra alrededor de ella y le echaré abono. 9 Puede ser que después dé fruto; y si no lo da, entonces la cortas”.

Jesús cura a una mujer en sábado

10 Un sábado estaba Jesús enseñando en la sinagoga. 11 Había allí una mujer a la que un espíritu maligno tenía enferma desde hacía dieciocho años. Se había quedado encorvada y era absolutamente incapaz de enderezarse. 12 Cuando Jesús la vio, la llamó y le dijo:

— Mujer, quedas libre de tu enfermedad.

13 Y puso las manos sobre ella. En el mismo instante, la mujer se enderezó y comenzó a alabar a Dios. 14 El jefe de la sinagoga, irritado porque Jesús había hecho una curación en sábado, dijo a todos los presentes:

— Seis días hay para trabajar. Venid uno de esos días a que os curen y no precisamente el sábado.

15 Pero el Señor le respondió:

— ¡Hipócritas! ¿Quién de vosotros no desata su buey o su asno del pesebre y los lleva a beber aunque sea sábado? 16 Pues esta mujer, que es descendiente de Abrahán, a la que Satanás tenía atada desde hace dieciocho años, ¿acaso no debía ser liberada de sus ataduras incluso en sábado?

17 Al decir Jesús esto, todos sus adversarios quedaron avergonzados. Por su parte, el pueblo se alegraba de las obras prodigiosas que él hacía.

Parábolas de la mostaza y la levadura (Mt 13,31-33; Mc 4,30-32)

18 Decía Jesús:

— ¿Con qué puede compararse el reino de Dios? ¿Con qué lo compararé? 19 Puede compararse al grano de mostaza que un hombre sembró en su huerto, y que luego creció y se hizo como un árbol, entre cuyas ramas anidaron los pájaros.

20 Dijo también:

— ¿A qué compararé el reino de Dios? 21 Puede compararse a la levadura que toma una mujer y la mezcla con tres medidas de harina para que fermente toda la masa.

La entrada en el Reino (Mt 7,13-14.21.23)

22 De camino a Jerusalén, Jesús enseñaba a la gente de los pueblos y aldeas por donde pasaba. 23 Una vez, uno le preguntó:

— Señor, ¿son pocos los que se salvan?

Jesús les dijo:

24 — Esforzaos en entrar por la puerta estrecha, porque os digo que muchos intentarán entrar, pero no podrán. 25 Después que el amo de la casa se levante y cierre la puerta, los que hayáis quedado fuera comenzaréis a golpear la puerta diciendo: “¡Señor, ábrenos!”. Pero él os contestará: “No sé de dónde sois”. 26 Entonces diréis: “¡Nosotros hemos comido y bebido contigo, y tú has enseñado en nuestras plazas!”. 27 Pero él os replicará: “¡No sé de dónde sois! ¡Apartaos de mí todos los que os pasáis la vida haciendo el mal!”. 28 Allí lloraréis y os rechinarán los dientes cuando veáis a Abrahán, a Isaac, a Jacob y a todos los profetas en el reino de Dios, mientras vosotros sois arrojados afuera. 29 Vendrán gentes de oriente y occidente, del norte y del sur, y se sentarán a la mesa en el reino de Dios. 30 Pues los que ahora son últimos, serán los primeros; y los que ahora son primeros, serán los últimos.

Lamento de Jesús sobre Jerusalén (Mt 23,37-39)

31 Ese mismo día llegaron unos fariseos y dijeron a Jesús:

— Vete de aquí, porque Herodes quiere matarte.

32 Jesús les contestó:

— Id y decidle a ese zorro: “Has de saber que yo expulso demonios y curo enfermos hoy y mañana, y al tercer día culminaré la tarea”. 33 Pero entre tanto, hoy, mañana y pasado mañana tengo que seguir mi camino, porque no es posible que un profeta muera fuera de Jerusalén. 34 ¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas y apedreas a los mensajeros que Dios te envía! ¡Cuántas veces he querido reunir a tus hijos como la gallina reúne a sus pollitos bajo las alas, y vosotros os negasteis! 35 Pues mirad: vuestra ciudad va a quedar desierta. Y os digo que no volveréis a verme hasta el momento en que digáis: “¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!”.

Repent or Perish

13 At that time,(A) some people came and reported to him about the Galileans(B) whose blood Pilate(C) had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And he[a] responded to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were more sinful than all the other Galileans because they suffered these things?(D) 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well. 4 Or those eighteen that the tower in Siloam(E) fell on and killed—do you think they were more sinful than all the other people who live in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

6 And he told this parable:(F) “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He came looking for fruit on it and found none.(G) 7 He told the vineyard worker, ‘Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(H) Why should it even waste the soil?’(I)

8 “But he replied to him, ‘Sir,[b] leave it this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.(J) 9 Perhaps it will produce fruit next year, but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Healing a Daughter of Abraham

10 As he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,(K) 11 a woman was there who had been disabled by a spirit[c](L) for over eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.[d] 12 When Jesus saw her, he called out to her,[e] “Woman, you are free of your disability.” 13 Then he laid his hands on her,(M) and instantly she was restored(N) and began to glorify God.(O)

14 But the leader of the synagogue, indignant(P) because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, “There are six days when work should be done;(Q) therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.”

15 But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites!(R) Doesn’t each one of you untie his ox(S) or donkey from the feeding trough(T) on the Sabbath and lead it to water?(U) 16 Satan(V) has bound(W) this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(X) for eighteen years—shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage[f] on the Sabbath day?”

17 When he had said these things, all his adversaries(Y) were humiliated,(Z) but the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things he was doing.(AA)

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and of the Leaven

18 He said, therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like,(AB) and what can I compare it to? 19 It’s like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches.”

20 Again he said, “What can I compare the kingdom of God(AC) to? 21 It’s like leaven[g](AD) that a woman took and mixed into fifty pounds[h] of flour until all of it was leavened.”

The Narrow Way

22 He went through one town and village after another, teaching and making his way to Jerusalem.(AE) 23 “Lord,” someone asked him, “are only a few people going to be saved?” (AF)

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,(AG) because I tell you, many will try to enter and won’t be able 25 once the homeowner gets up and shuts the door.(AH) Then you will stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up for us!’ He will answer you, ‘I don’t know you or where you’re from.’ 26 Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know you or where you’re from. Get away from me,(AI) all you evildoers!’ 28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth(AJ) in that place,(AK) when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,(AL) but yourselves thrown out. 29 They will come from east and west, from north and south, to share the banquet[i] in the kingdom of God. 30 Note this: Some who are last will be first, and some who are first will be last.”(AM)

Jesus and Herod Antipas

31 At that time some Pharisees came and told him, “Go, get out of here. Herod(AN) wants to kill you.”(AO)

32 He said to them, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I’m driving out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.’[j](AP) 33 Yet it is necessary that I(AQ) travel today, tomorrow, and the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet(AR) to perish(AS) outside of Jerusalem.

Jesus’s Lamentation over Jerusalem

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,(AT) who kills the prophets and stones(AU) those who are sent to her.(AV) How often I wanted to gather your children(AW) together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(AX) but you were not willing!(AY) 35 See, your house is abandoned to you.(AZ) I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when[k] you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”[l](BA)

Repent or Perish

13 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate(A) had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?(B) 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam(C) fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent,(D) you too will all perish.”

6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(E) 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(F) Why should it use up the soil?’

8 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(G) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(H) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(I) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(J) the synagogue leader(K) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(L) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(M) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(N) whom Satan(O) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(P) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(Q)(R)

18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God(S) like?(T) What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,(U) and the birds perched in its branches.”(V)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”(W)

The Narrow Door

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.(X) 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,(Y) because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’(Z)

26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’(AA)

28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth,(AB) when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west(AC) and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”(AD)

Jesus’ Sorrow for Jerusalem(AE)(AF)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod(AG) wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’(AH) 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet(AI) can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(AJ) and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(AK) I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[b]”(AL)
