Inledning
1 Många har redan åtagit sig att sammanställa en skildring av allt det som har hänt ibland oss, 2 i enlighet med vad vi har fått veta av de ögonvittnen som var med från början och som blev ordets tjänare. 3 Men nu har också jag noga gått igenom alla fakta ända från början och bestämt mig för att i rätt ordning skriva ner det för dig, högt ärade Theofilos, 4 för att du ska förstå att du kan lita på alla de upplysningar du har fått.
En ängel meddelar att Johannes döparen ska födas
5 När Herodes var kung i Judeen, fanns det en präst som hette Sakarias. Han tillhörde Avias avdelning bland prästerna. Också hans hustru Elisabet var en ättling till Aron. 6 De var båda rättfärdiga inför Gud och levde klanderfritt efter alla Herrens bud och föreskrifter. 7 De hade inga barn, för Elisabet kunde inte få några, och båda hade nu hunnit bli ganska gamla.
8 Men en dag, när Sakarias avdelning var i tjänst och han tjänstgjorde som präst inför Gud, 9 och man som vanligt kastat lott om vem som skulle få gå in i Herrens tempel och tända rökelse, blev Sakarias utvald. 10 Under tiden som rökelseoffret pågick stod allt folket utanför och bad.
11 Då fick han se en ängel från Herren stå till höger om rökelsealtaret. 12 Sakarias blev förskräckt vid den synen och greps av fruktan. 13 Men ängeln sa till honom: ”Var inte rädd, Sakarias! Din bön har blivit hörd. Du och din hustru Elisabet ska få en son, och du ska låta honom heta Johannes[a]. 14 Han ska bli till glädje och lycka för dig, och många ska glädja sig över hans födelse. 15 Han ska bli stor inför Herren. Han ska aldrig smaka vin eller starka drycker, och han ska bli fylld av den heliga Anden redan i moderlivet. 16 Han ska få många bland Israels folk att vända tillbaka till Herren, deras Gud. 17 Han ska gå framför honom i Elias[b] ande och kraft. Han ska vända fädernas hjärtan till deras barn och de upproriska till ett rättfärdigt sinnelag, för att förbereda åt Herren ett folk som är berett.”
18 Sakarias sa till ängeln: ”Hur kan jag vara säker på detta? Jag är ju en gammal man och min hustru är till åren.”
19 Då sa ängeln: ”Jag är Gabriel, och jag står inför Gud. Jag är utsänd för att tala till dig och meddela denna glada nyhet. 20 Men du ska bli stum och inte kunna tala förrän detta inträffar, eftersom du inte trodde på mina ord. De ska gå i uppfyllelse när tiden är inne.”
21 Utanför stod folket och väntade på att Sakarias skulle komma ut, och man började undra varför han dröjde så länge. 22 Då han till slut kom ut, kunde han inte tala till dem, och de förstod av hans gester att han måste ha sett en syn. Han förblev stum.
23 När Sakarias hade avslutat sin tjänstgöring, vände han tillbaka hem. 24 Och strax efteråt blev hans hustru Elisabet med barn och höll sig undan från folk i fem månader. Hon sa:
25 ”Tänk vad Herren har gjort med mig. Han har sett till mig, så att jag slipper min skam bland människor.”
En ängel meddelar att Jesus ska födas
26 I sjätte månaden sände Gud ängeln Gabriel till staden Nasaret i Galileen, 27 till en jungfru[c] som hette Maria och som var trolovad[d] med en man som hette Josef, av Davids släkt.
28 Ängeln kom in och sa till henne: ”Gläd dig, du högt benådade! Herren är med dig!”
29 Maria blev förskräckt och undrade vad ängeln kunde mena. 30 Men ängeln sa: ”Var inte rädd, Maria! Du har funnit nåd hos Gud. 31 Du ska bli med barn och föda en Son, och du ska låta honom heta Jesus. 32 Han ska bli stor och kallas den Högstes Son. Och Herren Gud ska ge honom hans förfader Davids tron. 33 Han ska regera över Jakobs släkt[e] för evigt, och hans kungamakt ska aldrig ta slut.”
34 Då frågade Maria ängeln: ”Men hur ska detta kunna ske? Jag har ju inte varit tillsammans med någon man.”
35 Ängeln svarade: ”Den heliga Anden ska komma över dig och den Högstes kraft vila över dig. Därför ska det barn du föder vara heligt och kallas Guds Son. 36 Din släkting Elisabet väntar också barn, trots sin höga ålder. Hon, som man sa var steril, är nu i sjätte månaden. 37 Ingenting är omöjligt för Gud.”
38 Maria sa: ”Jag är Herrens tjänarinna. Låt det bli som du har sagt.” Sedan lämnade ängeln henne.
Maria besöker Elisabet
39 Några dagar senare skyndade sig Maria iväg till en stad i Juda bergsbygd. 40 Hon gick till Sakarias hus och hälsade på Elisabet.
41 När Elisabet hörde Marias hälsning sparkade barnet till i henne, och hon fylldes av den heliga Anden. 42 Hon ropade högt: ”Välsignad är du bland kvinnorna, och välsignat är barnet du bär! 43 Vilken ära för mig att modern till min Herre kommer på besök! 44 I samma stund som jag hörde din hälsning sparkade barnet till av glädje i min mage. 45 Lycklig är den som trodde, för vad Herren har sagt ska gå i uppfyllelse.”
46 Maria sa:
”Jag vill hylla Herren av hela min själ!
47 Min ande jublar över Gud, han som räddar mig!
48 Han har sett till sin ringa tjänarinna.
Från den här stunden ska alla generationer prisa mig lycklig.
49 Han, den Mäktige, har gjort stora ting med mig.
Heligt är hans namn.
50 Hans barmhärtighet är stor mot dem som fruktar honom,
från generation till generation.
51 Han har utfört väldiga gärningar med sin arm
och skingrat dem som har övermodiga tankar i sina hjärtan.
52 Härskare störtar han från deras troner,
men de ödmjuka upphöjer han.
53 Han mättar de hungriga med sin godhet,
men de rika driver han tomhänta bort.
54 Han hjälper sin tjänare Israel
och kommer ihåg sin barmhärtighet
55 mot Abraham och hans ättlingar för evigt,
som han lovade våra förfäder.”
56 Maria stannade hos Elisabet i ungefär tre månader och återvände sedan hem.
Johannes döparens födelse
57 För Elisabet var det nu dags att föda, och hon fick en son. 58 Hennes grannar och släktingar fick höra om Herrens stora barmhärtighet mot henne, och de gladde sig med henne.
59 På åttonde dagen kom de för att omskära pojken. De ville kalla honom Sakarias efter hans far, 60 men hans mor sa: ”Nej, han ska heta Johannes.”
61 Då sa de: ”Det finns ju ingen annan i din släkt som heter så.” 62 Med hjälp av tecken frågade de då fadern vad han ville att pojken skulle heta.
63 Han bad om en tavla att skriva på, och till allas förvåning skrev han: ”Han ska heta Johannes.” 64 Och i samma stund kunde Sakarias tala igen, och han började lovprisa Gud.
65 Alla som bodde däromkring greps av fruktan, och nyheten om vad som hade hänt spreds i hela Judeens bergsbygd. 66 De som hörde om händelsen lade det på hjärtat och frågade sig: ”Vad ska det bli av detta barn? Herrens hand var ju med honom.”
67 Och hans far Sakarias fylldes av den heliga Anden och profeterade:
68 ”Välsignad är Herren, Israels Gud,
för han kommer till sitt folk och återlöser det.
69 Han reser en mäktig[f] räddare från sin tjänare Davids ätt,
70 som han för länge sedan lovade genom sina heliga profeter,
71 till räddning från våra fiender,
från alla som hatar oss.
72 Han visar barmhärtighet mot våra förfäder
och håller sitt heliga förbund,
73 eden han svor vår fader Abraham:
74 att rädda oss från våra fienders hand,
så att vi får tjäna honom utan fruktan,
75 i helighet och rättfärdighet inför honom så länge vi lever.
76 Och du, mitt barn, ska kallas den Högstes profet,
för du ska gå före Herren och bana väg för honom.
77 Så ska hans folk veta att räddningen är här
med förlåtelse för deras synder.
78 För på grund av vår Guds innerliga barmhärtighet
ska en soluppgång[g] komma ner till oss från höjden
79 och lysa över dem som lever i mörker och dödens skugga
och leda våra steg in på fridens väg.”
80 Pojken växte sedan upp och blev andligt stark. Han höll till ute i ödemarken till den dag då han skulle träda fram inför Israel.

1 Many have ·tried to report on [set out to compile an account/narrative of] the things that ·happened [have been fulfilled/accomplished] among us [John 20:31; Acts 1:1–3; 2 Pet. 1:16–19]. 2 They have written the same things that ·we learned from [L were handed down by] others—the ·people who saw those things [L eyewitnesses] from the beginning and ·served God by telling people his message [L were servants of the word; Acts 10:39–41; 1 John 1:1–3]. 3 Since I myself have ·studied [investigated; followed closely] everything carefully from the beginning, most excellent [C a designation for someone with high social or political status] Theophilus, it seemed ·good [fitting] for me to write it out for you. I arranged it ·in order [or in an orderly manner], 4 to help you know that what you have been taught is ·true [certain; reliable; John 20:31].
Zechariah and Elizabeth
5 During the time ·Herod ruled Judea [L of Herod, king of Judea], there was a priest named Zechariah who belonged to ·Abijah’s group [the priestly division/order of Abijah; C priests were divided into twenty-four divisions; 2 Chr. 31:2]. Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, came from the ·family [L daughters; C female descendants] of Aaron [C brother of Moses and first high priest of Israel; for a priest like Zechariah to marry a woman of priestly ancestry was a special blessing]. 6 [L Both] Zechariah and Elizabeth ·truly did what God said was good [L were righteous before God]. 19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel [C one of two named angels in Scripture (the other is Michael); Dan. 8:16; 9:21; 10:10–14]. I stand before God, who sent me to talk to you and to tell you this good news. 20 Now, ·listen [L look; T behold]! You will [L be silent and] not be able to speak until the day these things happen, because you did not believe ·what I told you [L my words]. ·But they will really happen [L …which will be fulfilled at their appointed time].”
21 Outside, the people were still waiting for Zechariah and were ·surprised that [wondering why] he was ·staying so long [delayed] in the Temple. 22 When Zechariah came outside, he could not speak to them, and they knew he had seen a vision in the Temple. He could only ·make signs [motion; gesture] to them and remained unable to speak. 23 When his ·time [period; L days] of service at the Temple was finished, he went home.
24 ·Later [L After these days], Zechariah’s wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and ·did not go out of her house [went into seclusion; L hid herself; C the reason is unknown, perhaps for quiet worship or to avoid gawking neighbors] for five months. Elizabeth said, 25 “·Look what [This is what; L Thus] the Lord has done for me! He has [L watched over me and] taken away my disgrace among the people [C the Jewish people thought it was a disgrace for a woman not to have children; Gen. 30:23].”
An Angel Appears to Mary
26 During Elizabeth’s sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel [1:19] to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin. She was ·engaged to marry [pledged to; C engagement was a binding contract between two families and could only be broken by divorce] a man named Joseph ·from the family [a descendent; L from the house] of David. ·Her [L The virgin’s] name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, “·Greetings [Hello; L Rejoice; C a common greeting]! ·The Lord has blessed you and is with you [or …favored one, the Lord is with you].”
29 But Mary was ·very startled [disturbed; perplexed; troubled] by what the angel said and wondered what ·this greeting might mean [sort of greeting this was].
30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary; [L for; because] ·God has shown you his grace [L you have found favor/grace with God]. 31 ·Listen [L Look; T Behold]! You will ·become pregnant [L conceive in your womb] and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus [Is. 7:14]. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. 35 The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come ·upon [over] you, and the power of the Most High will ·cover [overshadow] you. For this reason the ·baby will be holy and [holy one to be born] will be called the Son of God. 36 ·Now [L And look/T behold] Elizabeth, your relative, ·is also pregnant with [has also conceived] a son ·though she is very old [in her old age]. ·Everyone thought she could not have a baby, but she has been pregnant for six months. Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 [L In those days] Mary got up and went quickly to a town in the hills of Judea [C from Galilee in the north to southern Israel, about three or four days journey by foot]. 40 She ·came to [entered] Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the unborn baby ·inside her [in her womb] ·jumped [leaped; kicked], and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 She cried out in a loud voice, “·God has blessed you [L You are blessed] ·more than any other woman [L among women], and ·he has blessed the baby to which you will give birth [L blessed is the fruit of your womb]. 43 [L But] Why ·has this good thing happened to me [am I so honored], that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44 [L For look/T behold] When I heard ·your voice [L the sound of your greeting], the baby inside ·me [my womb] ·jumped [leaped; kicked] with joy. 45 ·You are blessed because you [L Blessed is she who has] believed that what the Lord said would ·really happen [be fulfilled].”
Mary Praises God
46 Then Mary said,
“My soul ·praises [exalts; glorifies; magnifies] the Lord [1 Sam. 2:1–10];
47 my ·heart [spirit] rejoices in God my Savior [Ps. 35:9],
48 because he has ·shown his concern for [noticed; looked favorably on] his ·humble [lowly] servant girl [1 Sam. 1:11].
[L For look/T behold] From now on, all ·people [L generations] will ·say that I am [call me] blessed [Ps. 138:6],
49 because the ·Powerful [Mighty] One has done great things for me.
His name is holy.
50 ·God will show his mercy [L His mercy is/continues] ·forever and ever [L to generations and generations]
to those who ·worship and serve [L fear; reverence] him [Ps. 103:17].
51 He has done mighty deeds ·by his power [L with his arm; C a metaphor for strength].
He has scattered the people who are proud

52 He has brought down ·rulers [the powerful] from their thrones
and ·raised up [exalted] the ·humble [lowly].
53 He has filled the hungry with good things [Ps. 107:9]
and sent the rich away ·with nothing [empty-handed].
54 He has helped his servant, the people of Israel,
·remembering to show them [mindful of his] mercy
55 as he promised to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his ·children [descendants; L seed] forever [Gen. 17:7, 19].”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The Birth of John
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth, she had a ·boy [L son]. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard how ·good [greatly merciful] the Lord was to her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 When the baby was eight days old, they came to circumcise him [Gen. 17:12]. They ·wanted [were about] to name him Zechariah because this was his father’s name, 60 but his mother said, “No! He will be named John.”
61 The people said to Elizabeth, “But no one in your family has this name.” 62 Then they made ·signs [gestures; motions] to his father to find out what he would like to name him [C indicating that Zechariah was not only mute but also deaf].
63 Zechariah ·asked [motioned] for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John,” and everyone ·was surprised [marveled; was amazed]. 64 Immediately ·Zechariah could talk again [L his mouth was opened and his tongue freed], and he began ·praising [blessing] God. 65 All their neighbors ·became alarmed [were afraid/in awe], and in all the ·mountains [hill country] of Judea people continued talking about all these things. 66 The people who heard about them ·wondered [L kept/pondered them in their hearts], saying, “What will this child [turn out to] be?” because the [L hand of the; C a metaphor for empowering presence] Lord was with him.
Zechariah Praises God
67 Then Zechariah, John’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “·Let us praise [L Blessed be] the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has ·come to help his people and has given them freedom [L visited and accomplished redemption for his people].
69 He has ·given us a powerful Savior [L raised up a horn of salvation for us; C referring to the horn of a powerful animal—a metaphor for strength; 1 Sam. 2:1, 10; Ps. 132:17; Ezek. 29:21]
·from the family [L in the house] of God’s servant David.
70 [L …just as] He said that he would do this
through [L the mouth of] his holy prophets who lived long ago:
71 He promised he would save us from our enemies

72 He said he would give mercy to our ·ancestors [forefathers]
and that he would remember his holy ·promise [covenant].
73 ·God promised [L The oath that he swore to] Abraham, our father [Gen. 22:16–18],
74 that he would ·save [rescue] us from the ·power [hand; v. 71] of our enemies
so we could serve him without fear,
75 being holy and ·good [righteous] before God as long as we live.
76 “Now you, child, will be called ·a [or the] prophet of the Most High God.

77 You will ·make his people know that they will be saved [L give his people the knowledge of salvation]
by having their sins forgiven [Jer. 31:34].

79 It will shine on those who ·live [dwell; sit] in darkness,
in the shadow of death [Is. 9:2].
It will guide ·us [L our feet] into the path of peace [Is. 59:8].”
80 And so the child grew up and became strong ·in spirit [or in the Spirit]. John lived in the ·desert [wilderness] until the time when he ·came out to preach [appeared; was revealed] to Israel.

Introduction(A)
1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first(B) were eyewitnesses(C) and servants of the word.(D) 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account(E) for you, most excellent(F) Theophilus,(G) 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.(H)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)
11 Then an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,(V) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit(W) even before he is born.(X) 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord,(Y) in the spirit and power of Elijah,(Z) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children(AA) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”(AB)
18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AD)
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. So the holy one(AU) to be born will be called[b] the Son of God.(AV) 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child(AW) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(AX)
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
Mary’s Song(BC)
46 And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord(BD)
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(BE)
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(BF)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(BG)
49 for the Mighty One has done great things(BH) for me—
holy is his name.(BI)
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.(BJ)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;(BK)
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.(BL)
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.(BM)
53 He has filled the hungry with good things(BN)
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful(BO)
55 to Abraham and his descendants(BP) forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)
Zechariah’s Song
67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(BX) and prophesied:(BY)
68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(BZ)
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(CA)
69 He has raised up a horn[c](CB) of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David(CC)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(CD)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(CE)
and to remember his holy covenant,(CF)
73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(CG)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him(CH) without fear(CI)
75 in holiness and righteousness(CJ) before him all our days.
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(CK) of the Most High;(CL)
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(CM)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,(CN)
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun(CO) will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,(CP)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”(CQ)
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[d];(CR) and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
