Tentación de Jesús(A)
4 Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto. 2 Allí estuvo cuarenta días y fue tentado por el diablo. No comió nada durante esos días, pasados los cuales tuvo hambre.
3 ―Si eres el Hijo de Dios —le propuso el diablo—, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan.
4 Jesús le respondió:
―Escrito está: “No solo de pan vive el hombre”.[a]
5 Entonces el diablo lo llevó a un lugar alto y le mostró en un instante todos los reinos del mundo.
6 ―Sobre estos reinos y todo su esplendor —le dijo—, te daré la autoridad, porque a mí me ha sido entregada, y puedo dársela a quien yo quiera. 7 Así que, si me adoras, todo será tuyo.
Jesús le contestó:
8 ―Escrito está: “Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele solamente a él”.[b]
9 El diablo lo llevó luego a Jerusalén e hizo que se pusiera de pie en la parte más alta del templo, y le dijo:
―Si eres el Hijo de Dios, ¡tírate de aquí! 10 Pues escrito está:
»“Ordenará que sus ángeles te cuiden.
Te sostendrán en sus manos
11 para que no tropieces con piedra alguna”».[c]
12 ―También está escrito: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios”[d] —le replicó Jesús.
13 Así que el diablo, habiendo agotado todo recurso de tentación, lo dejó hasta otra oportunidad.
Rechazan a Jesús en Nazaret
14 Jesús regresó a Galilea en el poder del Espíritu, y se extendió su fama por toda aquella región. 15 Enseñaba en las sinagogas, y todos lo admiraban.
16 Fue a Nazaret, donde se había criado, y un sábado entró en la sinagoga, como era su costumbre. Se levantó para hacer la lectura, 17 y le entregaron el libro del profeta Isaías. Al desenrollarlo, encontró el lugar donde está escrito:
18 «El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí,
por cuanto me ha ungido
para anunciar buenas nuevas a los pobres.
Me ha enviado a proclamar libertad a los cautivos
y dar vista a los ciegos,
a poner en libertad a los oprimidos,
19 a pregonar el año del favor del Señor».[e]
20 Luego enrolló el libro, se lo devolvió al ayudante y se sentó. Todos los que estaban en la sinagoga lo miraban detenidamente, 21 y él comenzó a hablarles: «Hoy se cumple esta Escritura en vuestra presencia».
22 Todos dieron su aprobación, impresionados por las hermosas palabras[f] que salían de su boca. «¿No es este el hijo de José?», se preguntaban.
23 Jesús continuó: «Seguramente me vais a citar el proverbio: “¡Médico, cúrate a ti mismo! Haz aquí en tu tierra lo que hemos oído que hiciste en Capernaún”. 24 Pues bien, os aseguro que a ningún profeta lo aceptan en su propia tierra. 25 No cabe duda de que en tiempos de Elías, cuando el cielo se cerró por tres años y medio, de manera que hubo una gran hambre en toda la tierra, muchas viudas vivían en Israel. 26 Sin embargo, Elías no fue enviado a ninguna de ellas, sino a una viuda de Sarepta, en los alrededores de Sidón. 27 Así mismo, había en Israel muchos enfermos de lepra en tiempos del profeta Eliseo, pero ninguno de ellos fue sanado, sino Naamán el sirio».
28 Al oír esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga se enfurecieron. 29 Se levantaron, lo expulsaron del pueblo y lo llevaron hasta la cumbre de la colina sobre la que estaba construido el pueblo, para tirarlo por el precipicio. 30 Pero él pasó por en medio de ellos y se fue.
Jesús expulsa a un espíritu maligno(B)
31 Jesús pasó a Capernaún, un pueblo de Galilea, y el sábado enseñaba a la gente. 32 Estaban asombrados de su enseñanza, porque les hablaba con autoridad.
33 Había en la sinagoga un hombre que estaba poseído por un espíritu maligno, quien gritó con todas sus fuerzas:
34 ―¡Ah! ¿Por qué te entrometes, Jesús de Nazaret? ¿Has venido a destruirnos? Yo sé quién eres tú: ¡el Santo de Dios!
35 ―¡Cállate! —lo reprendió Jesús—. ¡Sal de ese hombre!
Entonces el demonio derribó al hombre en medio de la gente y salió de él sin hacerle ningún daño.
36 Todos se asustaron y se decían unos a otros: «¿Qué clase de palabra es esta? ¡Con autoridad y poder da órdenes a los espíritus malignos, y salen!» 37 Y se extendió su fama por todo aquel lugar.
Jesús sana a muchos enfermos(C)(D)
38 Cuando Jesús salió de la sinagoga, se fue a casa de Simón, cuya suegra estaba enferma con una fiebre muy alta. Le pidieron a Jesús que la ayudara, 39 así que se inclinó sobre ella y reprendió a la fiebre, la cual se le fue. Ella se levantó en seguida y se puso a servirles.
40 Al ponerse el sol, la gente llevó a Jesús todos los que padecían de diversas enfermedades; él puso las manos sobre cada uno de ellos y los sanó. 41 Además, de muchas personas salían demonios que gritaban: «¡Tú eres el Hijo de Dios!» Pero él los reprendía y no los dejaba hablar porque sabían que él era el Cristo.
42 Cuando amaneció, Jesús salió y se fue a un lugar solitario. La gente andaba buscándolo y, cuando llegaron adonde él estaba, procuraban detenerlo para que no se fuera. 43 Pero él les dijo: «Es preciso que anuncie también a los demás pueblos las buenas nuevas del reino de Dios, porque para esto fui enviado».
44 Y siguió predicando en las sinagogas de los judíos.[g]

Tentación de Jesús
(Mt. 4.1-11; Mr. 1.12-13)
4 Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán, y fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto 2 por cuarenta días, y era tentado por el diablo. Y no comió nada en aquellos días, pasados los cuales, tuvo hambre. 3 Entonces el diablo le dijo: Si eres Hijo de Dios, di a esta piedra que se convierta en pan. 4 Jesús, respondiéndole, dijo: Escrito está: No solo de pan vivirá el hombre,(A) sino de toda palabra de Dios. 5 Y le llevó el diablo a un alto monte, y le mostró en un momento todos los reinos de la tierra. 6 Y le dijo el diablo: A ti te daré toda esta potestad, y la gloria de ellos; porque a mí me ha sido entregada, y a quien quiero la doy. 7 Si tú postrado me adorares, todos serán tuyos. 8 Respondiendo Jesús, le dijo: Vete de mí, Satanás, porque escrito está: Al Señor tu Dios adorarás, y a él sólo servirás.(B) 9 Y le llevó a Jerusalén, y le puso sobre el pináculo del templo, y le dijo: Si eres Hijo de Dios, échate de aquí abajo; 10 porque escrito está:
A sus ángeles mandará acerca de ti, que te guarden;(C)
11 y,
En las manos te sostendrán,
Para que no tropieces con tu pie en piedra.(D)
12 Respondiendo Jesús, le dijo: Dicho está: No tentarás al Señor tu Dios.(E) 13 Y cuando el diablo hubo acabado toda tentación, se apartó de él por un tiempo.
Jesús principia su ministerio

14 Y Jesús volvió en el poder del Espíritu a Galilea, y se difundió su fama por toda la tierra de alrededor. 15 Y enseñaba en las sinagogas de ellos, y era glorificado por todos.
Jesús en Nazaret

16 Vino a Nazaret, donde se había criado; y en el día de reposo[a] entró en la sinagoga, conforme a su costumbre, y se levantó a leer. 17 Y se le dio el libro del profeta Isaías; y habiendo abierto el libro, halló el lugar donde estaba escrito:
18 El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí,
Por cuanto me ha ungido para dar buenas nuevas a los pobres;
Me ha enviado a sanar a los quebrantados de corazón;
A pregonar libertad a los cautivos,
Y vista a los ciegos;
A poner en libertad a los oprimidos;
19 A predicar el año agradable del Señor.(F)
20 Y enrollando el libro, lo dio al ministro, y se sentó; y los ojos de todos en la sinagoga estaban fijos en él. 21 Y comenzó a decirles: Hoy se ha cumplido esta Escritura delante de vosotros. 22 Y todos daban buen testimonio de él, y estaban maravillados de las palabras de gracia que salían de su boca, y decían: ¿No es este el hijo de José? 23 Él les dijo: Sin duda me diréis este refrán: Médico, cúrate a ti mismo; de tantas cosas que hemos oído que se han hecho en Capernaum, haz también aquí en tu tierra. 24 Y añadió: De cierto os digo, que ningún profeta es acepto en su propia tierra.(G) 25 Y en verdad os digo que muchas viudas había en Israel en los días de Elías, cuando el cielo fue cerrado por tres años y seis meses, y hubo una gran hambre en toda la tierra;(H) 26 pero a ninguna de ellas fue enviado Elías, sino a una mujer viuda en Sarepta de Sidón.(I) 27 Y muchos leprosos había en Israel en tiempo del profeta Eliseo; pero ninguno de ellos fue limpiado, sino Naamán el sirio.(J) 28 Al oír estas cosas, todos en la sinagoga se llenaron de ira; 29 y levantándose, le echaron fuera de la ciudad, y le llevaron hasta la cumbre del monte sobre el cual estaba edificada la ciudad de ellos, para despeñarle. 30 Mas él pasó por en medio de ellos, y se fue.
Un hombre que tenía un espíritu inmundo
(Mr. 1.21-28)
31 Descendió Jesús a Capernaum, ciudad de Galilea; y les enseñaba en los días de reposo.[b] 32 Y se admiraban de su doctrina, porque su palabra era con autoridad.(K) 33 Estaba en la sinagoga un hombre que tenía un espíritu de demonio inmundo, el cual exclamó a gran voz, 34 diciendo: Déjanos; ¿qué tienes con nosotros, Jesús nazareno? ¿Has venido para destruirnos? Yo te conozco quién eres, el Santo de Dios. 35 Y Jesús le reprendió, diciendo: Cállate, y sal de él. Entonces el demonio, derribándole en medio de ellos, salió de él, y no le hizo daño alguno. 36 Y estaban todos maravillados, y hablaban unos a otros, diciendo: ¿Qué palabra es esta, que con autoridad y poder manda a los espíritus inmundos, y salen? 37 Y su fama se difundía por todos los lugares de los contornos.
Jesús sana a la suegra de Pedro
(Mt. 8.14-15; Mr. 1.29-31)
38 Entonces Jesús se levantó y salió de la sinagoga, y entró en casa de Simón. La suegra de Simón tenía una gran fiebre; y le rogaron por ella. 39 E inclinándose hacia ella, reprendió a la fiebre; y la fiebre la dejó, y levantándose ella al instante, les servía.
Muchos sanados al ponerse el sol
(Mt. 8.16-17; Mr. 1.32-34)
40 Al ponerse el sol, todos los que tenían enfermos de diversas enfermedades los traían a él; y él, poniendo las manos sobre cada uno de ellos, los sanaba. 41 También salían demonios de muchos, dando voces y diciendo: Tú eres el Hijo de Dios. Pero él los reprendía y no les dejaba hablar, porque sabían que él era el Cristo.
Jesús recorre Galilea predicando
(Mr. 1.35-39)
42 Cuando ya era de día, salió y se fue a un lugar desierto; y la gente le buscaba, y llegando a donde estaba, le detenían para que no se fuera de ellos. 43 Pero él les dijo: Es necesario que también a otras ciudades anuncie el evangelio del reino de Dios; porque para esto he sido enviado. 44 Y predicaba en las sinagogas de Galilea.

Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil(A)
4 Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. The Spirit led Jesus into the ·desert [wilderness] 2 where the devil ·tempted [or tested] Jesus for forty days [C like Israel’s forty years of testing in the wilderness]. Jesus ate nothing during that time, and when those days were ended, he was very hungry [Ex. 34:28].
3 The devil said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, ·tell [command] this rock to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written in the Scriptures: ‘A person does not live on bread alone [Deut. 8:3].’”
5 Then the devil took Jesus [L up] and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in an instant. 6 The devil said to Jesus, “I will give you all these kingdoms and all their ·power [authority] and ·glory [splendor]. [L …because] It has all been ·given [handed over] to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. 7 If you worship me, then it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written in the Scriptures: ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him [Deut. 6:13; 10:20].’”
9 Then the devil led Jesus to Jerusalem and put him on ·a high place [the pinnacle] of the Temple. He said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, ·jump [throw yourself] down [L from here]. 10 [L For] It is written in the Scriptures:
‘He ·has put his angels in charge of you [or will order his angels to protect you; L will command his angel concerning you]
to ·watch over you [guard you carefully; Ps. 91:11].’
11 It is also written:
‘They will ·catch you in [lift you up with] their hands
so that you will not ·hit your foot on [trip/stumble over] a rock [Ps. 91:12].’”
12 Jesus answered, “But it also says in the Scriptures: ‘Do not test the Lord your God [Deut. 6:16].’”
13 After the devil had ·tempted [tested] Jesus ·in every way [or with all these temptations], he left him to wait until a ·better [opportune] time.
Jesus Teaches the People(B)
14 Jesus returned to Galilee ·in the power of [empowered by] the Holy Spirit, and ·stories [news; reports] about him spread all through the ·area [region; countryside]. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues, and everyone ·praised [acclaimed; glorified] him.
16 Jesus traveled to Nazareth, where he had grown up. On the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue, as he always did, and stood up to read. 17 The ·book [or scroll] of Isaiah the prophet was given to him. He ·opened [L unrolled] the ·book [or scroll] and found the place where this is written:
18 “·The Lord has put his Spirit in me [L The Spirit of the Lord is on me],
because he ·appointed [L anointed; C at Jesus’ baptism he was anointed by the Spirit as the Messiah, meaning the Anointed One] me to ·tell [proclaim; preach] the ·Good News [Gospel] to the poor.
He has sent me to ·tell the captives they are free [proclaim liberty/release for the captives/prisoners]
and to tell the blind that they can see again [Is. 61:1].
God sent me to free ·those who have been treated unfairly [the oppressed; Is. 58:6]
19 and to ·announce [proclaim] the ·time [year] when the Lord will show his ·kindness [favor; Is. 61:2; C an allusion to the release of slaves during the Jubilee year; Lev. 25].”
20 Jesus ·closed the book [or rolled up the scroll], gave it back to the ·assistant [synagogue attendant], and sat down. ·Everyone [L All the eyes] in the synagogue was watching Jesus closely. 21 He began to say to them, “·While you heard these words just now, they were coming true [L Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ears]!”
22 All the people spoke well of Jesus and were amazed at the ·words of grace [or gracious words] he spoke. They asked, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
23 Jesus said to them, “·I know that [No doubt; Surely] you will ·tell [quote] me ·the old saying [this proverb]: ‘·Doctor [T Physician], heal yourself.’ You want to say, ‘We heard about the things you did in Capernaum [C a town in Galilee where Jesus lived and ministered]. Do those things here in your own town!’” 24 Then Jesus said, “·I tell you the truth [L Truly/Amen I say to you], a prophet is not ·accepted [welcomed] in his hometown. 25 But I tell you ·the truth [truly], there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah. ·It did not rain [L The sky/heavens were shut] in Israel for three and one-half years, and there was ·no food anywhere [L a great famine] in the whole country [1 Kin. 17]. 26 But Elijah was sent to none of those widows, only to a widow in Zarephath, a town in Sidon [C a Gentile city on the coast north of Israel]. 27 And there were many ·with skin diseases [T lepers] living in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha. But none of them were ·healed [cured; cleansed], only Naaman, ·who was from the country of Syria [L the Syrian; 2 Kin. 5].”
28 When all the people in the synagogue heard these things, they ·became very angry [were furious; L were filled with wrath]. 29 They got up, ·forced [drove] Jesus out of town, and took him to the ·edge [brow] of the ·cliff [hill] on which the town was built. They planned to throw him off the ·edge [cliff], 30 but Jesus ·walked [passed] through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus Forces Out an Evil Spirit(C)
31 Jesus went to Capernaum [4:23], a city in Galilee, and on the Sabbath day, he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because ·he spoke with [his words/message had] authority. 33 In the synagogue a man who had within him an ·evil spirit [L unclean spirit; C demons were viewed as “unclean” or defiling spirit-beings] shouted in a loud voice, 34 “Jesus of Nazareth! What do you ·want [have to do] with us? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are—God’s Holy One!”
35 Jesus ·commanded [reprimanded; rebuked] the evil spirit, “Be quiet! Come out of the man!” The ·evil spirit [L demon] threw the man down to the ground before all the people and then left the man without ·hurting [injuring] him.
36 [L All] The people were amazed and said to each other, “·What does this mean? [or What words these are!] With authority and power he ·commands [gives orders to] ·evil [defiling; L unclean; v. 33] spirits, and they come out.” 37 And so the news about Jesus spread to every place in the whole area.
Jesus Heals Many People(D)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon [C Peter]. Simon’s mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they asked Jesus ·to help her [L concerning her]. 39 He ·came to her side [or stood over her] and ·commanded the fever to leave [L rebuked the fever]. It left her, and immediately she got up and ·began serving them [or waiting on them; C presumably meal preparation].
40 ·When [or As] the sun went down, the people brought those who were sick to Jesus. ·Putting [Laying] his hands on each sick person, he healed every one of them. 41 Demons [L also] came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God.” But Jesus ·commanded [reprimanded; rebuked] the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew Jesus was the ·Christ [Messiah].
42 At daybreak, Jesus went to a ·lonely [isolated; deserted] place, but the ·people [crowds] ·looked [were looking] for him. When they ·found [came to] him, they tried to keep him from leaving. 43 But Jesus said to them, “I must preach [L the good news] about God’s kingdom to other towns, too. [L …because] This is why I was sent.”
44 Then he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.[a]
