Israel Is Defeated at Ai
7 (A)But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully regarding the things designated for destruction, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the designated things; therefore the anger of the Lord burned against the sons of Israel.
2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near (B)Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “[a]Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 Then they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up; have only about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not trouble all the people there, for they are few.” 4 So about three thousand men from the people went up there, but (C)they fled [b]from the men of Ai. 5 And the men of Ai struck and killed about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them [c]from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them on the mountainside; and the (D)hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 Then Joshua (E)tore his clothes and fell to the ground on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and (F)they put dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Oh, Lord [d]God! Why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan, only to hand us over to the Amorites, to eliminate us? If only we had been willing [e]to live beyond the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what can I say since Israel has turned their [f]back before their enemies? 9 (G)For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear about it, and they will surround us and eliminate our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great name?”
10 So the Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? 11 Israel has sinned, and (H)they have also violated My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things designated for destruction, and have both stolen and kept it a secret. Furthermore, they have also put them among their own things. 12 Therefore the (I)sons of Israel cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their [g]backs before their enemies, because they have become designated for destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you eliminate from your midst the things designated for destruction. 13 Stand up! (J)Consecrate the people and say, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the Lord, the God of Israel, has said this: “(K)There are things designated for destruction in your midst, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you have removed the designated things from your midst.” 14 So in the morning you shall come forward by your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which (L)the Lord selects by lot shall come forward by families, and the family which the Lord selects shall come forward by households, and the household which the Lord selects shall come forward man by man. 15 And (M)it shall be that the one who is selected with the things designated for destruction shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has violated the covenant of the Lord, and because he (N)has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”
The Sin of Achan
16 So Joshua got up early in the morning and brought Israel forward by [h]tribes, and the tribe of Judah was selected. 17 So he brought the family of Judah forward, and he selected the family of the Zerahites; then he brought the family of the Zerahites forward man by man, and Zabdi was selected. 18 And he brought his household forward man by man; and (O)Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, (P)give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.” 20 So Achan answered Joshua and said, “Truly, I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel, and [i]this is what I did: 21 when I saw among the spoils a beautiful robe from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight, then I (Q)wanted them and took them; and behold, they are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath it. 23 So they took them from inside the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the sons of Israel; and they [j]laid them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his [k]oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to (R)the Valley of [l]Achor. 25 And Joshua said, “Why have you (S)brought disaster on us? The Lord will bring disaster on you this day.” And all Israel stoned [m]them with stones; and they burned them with fire [n]after they had stoned them with stones. 26 Then they erected over him a large heap of stones that stands to this day, and the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called (T)the Valley of [o]Achor to this day.

El pecado de Acán
7 Pero los hijos de Israel cometieron una grave falta porque Acán, que era de la tribu de Judá, tomó de lo que estaba bajo maldición, y el Señor se enojó contra todo el pueblo. Acán era hijo de Carmi, nieto de Zabdi y bisnieto de Zeraj.
2 Poco después, Josué envió a varios hombres de Jericó a Hai, que está junto a Bet Avén, al oriente de Betel. Les dijo:
«Vayan y hagan un reconocimiento de la tierra de Hai.»
Y ellos fueron a reconocer el terreno. 3 Cuando regresaron, le dijeron a Josué:
«No es necesario que todo el pueblo se fatigue. Bastará con que vayan dos mil o tres mil hombres. Ellos podrán derrotar a Hai, porque los de allí son pocos.»
4 Así que los que fueron a atacar a Hai eran como tres mil hombres, pero fueron derrotados y tuvieron que salir huyendo de allí. 5 Los habitantes de Hai mataron a treinta y seis hombres; a los demás los persiguieron hasta las canteras, y los derrotaron en la bajada. Y cuando el pueblo supo esto, su ánimo desfalleció y se escurrió como agua.
6 Entonces Josué se rasgó la ropa, y tanto él como los ancianos de Israel se echaron polvo sobre la cabeza e inclinaron su rostro hasta el suelo delante del arca del Señor, hasta que cayó la tarde. 7 Y Josué exclamó:
«¡Ay, Señor, Señor! ¿Por qué permitiste que el pueblo cruzara el Jordán? ¿Acaso fue sólo para entregarnos en manos de los amorreos, para que nos destruyan? ¡Hubiera sido mejor que nos quedáramos al otro lado del Jordán! 8 ¡Ay, Señor! ¿Qué puedo decir, ahora que Israel ha sido derrotado y que salió huyendo de sus enemigos? 9 Cuando lo sepan los cananeos y todos los pueblos que habitan esta tierra, vendrán y nos rodearán, y nos borrarán de la tierra. Y entonces, ¿qué vas a hacer con tu gran fama?»
10 El Señor le respondió a Josué:
«¿Por qué estás con el rostro en el suelo? ¡Levántate! 11 Israel ha pecado. Ha quebrantado el pacto que yo le ordené, y además ha tomado lo que le prohibí tomar. Han robado, han mentido, y han guardado entre sus pertenencias lo robado. 12 Por eso los hijos de Israel no podrán vencer a sus enemigos. Es más, cuando se enfrenten a ellos, huirán; Y es que han quedado bajo maldición. Si no destruyen la maldición que está entre ustedes, no volverán a saber de mí. 13 Así que levántate, consagra al pueblo, y dile: “Purifíquense para mañana, porque el Señor y Dios de Israel dice: ‘Hay maldición entre ustedes, y no podrán vencer a sus enemigos hasta que esa maldición sea destruida.’” 14 Para mañana, todos deben presentarse por tribus, y la tribu que el Señor elija se acercará y presentará a sus familias; entonces la familia que el Señor elija se acercará y presentará a sus casas, y la casa que el Señor elija se acercará y presentará a los varones, 15 y el que tenga en su poder lo que está bajo maldición deberá ser quemado con todas sus posesiones, pues ha quebrantado el pacto del Señor y ha cometido un gran pecado en Israel.»
16 Josué se levantó muy de mañana y ordenó que se acercara Israel por tribus, y fue elegida la tribu de Judá. 17 Cuando se acercó esta tribu, Josué eligió a la familia de los de Zeraj, y entonces hizo que se acercaran los varones, y eligió a Zabdi; 18 luego mandó que todos los varones de su casa se acercaran, y de la tribu de Judá tomó a Acán, que era hijo de Carmi, nieto de Zabdi y bisnieto de Zeraj. 19 Entonces Josué le dijo a Acán:
«Hijo mío, da gloria al Señor, el Dios de Israel; alábalo y dime qué has hecho, y no trates de encubrirlo.»
20 Acán respondió a Josué:
«Reconozco que he pecado contra el Señor, el Dios de Israel. Voy a decirte lo que hice. 21 Entre los despojos vi un manto babilónico muy hermoso, doscientas monedas de plata, y un lingote de oro que pesaba más de medio kilo. Me ganó la codicia, y lo tomé. Pero todo lo tengo escondido bajo tierra, en medio de mi tienda. Y debajo de todo está el dinero.»
22 Josué ordenó que algunos hombres fueran corriendo a la tienda. Y cuando éstos llegaron, vieron que todo estaba escondido allí, y que el dinero estaba debajo; 23 entonces tomaron lo que estaba en la tienda y lo llevaron a Josué y a los hijos de Israel, y todo lo pusieron delante del Señor. 24 Josué y todo Israel mandaron aprehender a Acán hijo de Zeraj, y tomando el dinero, el manto, el lingote de oro, y a sus hijos e hijas, junto con sus bueyes, asnos, ovejas, tienda, y todo lo que tenía, lo llevaron al valle de Acor. 25 Allí Josué le dijo a Acán:
«¿Por qué nos has traído confusión? ¡Que el Señor te confunda en este día!»
Y enseguida todos los israelitas los apedrearon, y luego los quemaron; 26 después de eso, levantaron sobre ellos un gran montón de piedras, el cual permanece hasta el día de hoy. Entonces el enojo del Señor se calmó. Por eso hasta este día aquel lugar se llama el Valle de Acor.[a]
