5 When all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until we had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no spirit in them any more because of the Israelites.
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, Make knives of flint and circumcise the [new generation of] Israelites as before.
3 So Joshua made knives of flint and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.
4 And this is the reason Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they came out of Egypt.
5 Though all the people who came out were circumcised, yet all the people who were born in the wilderness on the way after Israel came out of Egypt had not been circumcised.
6 For the Israelites walked forty years in the wilderness till all who were men of war who came out of Egypt perished, because they did not hearken to the voice of the Lord; to them the Lord swore that He would not let them see the land which the Lord swore to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
7 So it was their uncircumcised children whom He raised up in their stead whom Joshua circumcised, because the rite had not been performed on the way.
8 When they finished circumcising all the males of the nation, they remained in their places in the camp till they were healed.
9 And the Lord said to Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. So the name of the place is called Gilgal [rolling] to this day.
10 And the Israelites encamped in Gilgal; and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.
11 And on that same day they ate the produce of the land: unleavened cakes and parched grain.
12 And the manna ceased on the day after they ate of the produce of the land; and the Israelites had manna no more, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up, and behold, a Man stood near him with His drawn sword in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, Are you for us or for our adversaries?
14 And He said, No [neither], but as Prince of the Lord’s host have I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, What says my Lord to His servant?
15 And the Prince of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, [a]Loose your shoes from off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.(A)

5 So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites (A)who were by the sea, (B)heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until [a]we had crossed over, that [b]their heart melted; (C)and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the children of Israel.
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make (D)flint knives for yourself, and circumcise the sons of Israel again the second time.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives for himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at [c]the hill of the foreskins. 4 And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: (E)All the people who came out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way, after they had come out of Egypt. 5 For all the people who came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness, on the way as they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised. 6 For the children of Israel walked (F)forty years in the wilderness, till all the people who were men of war, who came out of Egypt, were [d]consumed, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord—to whom the Lord swore that (G)He would not show them the land which the Lord had sworn to their fathers that He would give us, (H)“a land flowing with milk and honey.” 7 Then Joshua circumcised (I)their sons whom He raised up in their place; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.
8 So it was, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they stayed in their places in the camp (J)till they were healed. 9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I have rolled away (K)the reproach of Egypt from you.” Therefore the name of the place is called (L)Gilgal[e] to this day.
10 Now the children of Israel camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover (M)on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the plains of Jericho. 11 And they ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Passover, unleavened bread and [f]parched grain, on the very same day. 12 Then (N)the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten the produce of the land; and the children of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that year.
The Commander of the Army of the Lord
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, (O)a Man stood opposite him (P)with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?”
14 So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”
And Joshua (Q)fell on his face to the earth and (R)worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”
15 Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, (S)“Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

De besnijdenis
5 De volken ten westen van de Jordaan—de Amorieten en Kanaänieten, die langs de kust van de Middellandse Zee woonden—hoorden dat de Here de Jordaan had laten opdrogen zodat het volk Israël kon oversteken. De moed zakte hen in de schoenen en zij werden verlamd door angst.
2,3 De Here droeg Jozua in die tijd op alle mannelijke Israëlieten te besnijden. De Here beval dat voor dit doel stenen messen moesten worden gemaakt. Daarop maakte Jozua scherpe messen en besneed de Israëlieten op de plaats, die ‘de heuvel van de voorhuiden’ werd genoemd.
4,5 Deze besnijdenis was nodig, omdat alle mannen die bij het vertrek uit Egypte oud genoeg waren om wapens te dragen, waren besneden en tegelijk met de hele generatie die gedurende die jaren in de woestijn was, waren gestorven. Maar alle jongens die in de woestijn werden geboren, waren niet besneden. 6 Want veertig jaar lang had het volk van Israël rondgetrokken in de woestijn. Net zolang tot alle mannen die bij het vertrek uit Egypte oud genoeg waren om een wapen te dragen, waren gestorven. Zij waren immers ongehoorzaam geweest aan de Here en Hij had gezworen dat zij geen voet zouden zetten in het land dat Hij Israël had beloofd, een land dat overvloeide van melk en honing. 7 Daarom liet Jozua nu hun zonen besnijden die God in de plaats van hun vaders had gesteld. 8,9 De Here zei tegen Jozua: ‘Vandaag heb Ik de schande van uw onbesnedenheid weggenomen.’ Daarom werd de plaats waar dit gebeurde Gilgal genoemd (wat ‘wegnemen’ betekent) en zo heet het nu nog. Na deze ceremonie bleef het hele volk rusten in het kamp tot de wonden waren geheeld.
10 Tijdens hun verblijf bij Gilgal op de vlakte van Jericho vierden zij Pesach op de avond van de veertiende dag van die maand. 11,12 De dag na Pesach aten zij van de opbrengst van het land: ongezuurd brood en geroosterd koren. De volgende dag viel er geen manna meer. De tijd van het manna was voor de Israëlieten voorbij. Vanaf dat ogenblik leefden zij van de opbrengst van het land Kanaän. 13 Terwijl Jozua erover nadacht hoe hij de stad Jericho zou innemen, zag hij een Man met een getrokken zwaard. Jozua liep naar Hem toe en vroeg: ‘Bent u een vriend of een vijand?’ 14 ‘Geen van beide,’ antwoordde de Man, ‘Ik kom als de Aanvoerder van het hemelse leger van de Here.’ Jozua viel in aanbidding voor Hem op de grond en zei: ‘Welke opdracht heeft de Here voor mij?’ 15 ‘Trek uw sandalen uit,’ droeg de Aanvoerder hem op, ‘want dit is heilige grond.’ Jozua deed dat.

Ang Pagtutuli at ang Pagdiriwang ng Paskwa sa Gilgal
5 Nabalitaan ng mga haring Amoreo na nasa kanluran ng Jordan at ng mga haring Cananeo na nasa baybayin ng Dagat Mediteraneo na pinatuyo ni Yahweh ang Ilog Jordan nang tumawid ang bayang Israel. Dahil dito'y natakot silang lahat, at nasiraan sila ng loob sa pagdating ng mga Israelita.
2 Sinabi ni Yahweh kay Josue, “Kumuha ka ng batong matalim, gawin mong panghiwa, at tuliin mo ang mga kalalakihan ng Israel.” 3 Gayon nga ang ginawa ni Josue, tinuli niya ang mga lalaki sa isang lugar na tinatawag na Burol ng Pagtutuli. 4 Ginawa niya ito sapagkat namatay na ang lahat ng mga lalaking may sapat na gulang upang makipagdigma sa panahon ng paglalakbay noong sila'y umalis sa Egipto. 5 Ang mga iyon ay pawang tuli na, ngunit ang mga isinilang sa panahon ng paglalakbay sa ilang ay hindi pa. 6 Apatnapung(A) taon nang naglakbay sa ilang ang bayang Israel hanggang sa namatay lahat ang mga lalaking may sapat na gulang upang makipagdigma nang sila'y umalis sa Egipto. Sinuway nila si Yahweh, kaya sinabi niya sa kanila na hindi nila makikita ang mayaman at masaganang lupain na ipinangako niya sa kanilang mga ninuno. 7 Ang kanilang mga anak na lalaki na humalili sa kanila ang tinuli ni Josue, sapagkat ang mga ito'y hindi tinuli nang panahon ng paglalakbay.
8 Matapos tuliin ang lahat ng kalalakihan, nanatili sa kampo ang buong bayan hanggang sa gumaling ang mga sugat. 9 At sinabi ni Yahweh kay Josue, “Inalis ko ngayon ang kahihiyan ng pagkaalipin ninyo sa Egipto.” Kaya't ang lugar na iyon ay tinawag na Gilgal[a] magpahanggang ngayon.
10 Samantalang(B) ang mga Israelita ay nasa Gilgal sa kapatagan ng Jerico, ipinagdiwang nila ang Paskwa noong kinagabihan ng ikalabing apat na araw ng unang buwan. 11 Kinaumagahan, araw pa rin ng Paskwa, kumain sila ng mga pagkaing inani nila sa lupaing iyon: sinangag na trigo at tinapay na walang pampaalsa. 12 Hindi(C) na muling umulan pa ng manna nang makakain na sila ng mga inani nila sa lupain ng Canaan. Kaya't mula nang taóng iyon, pagkaing inaani na sa Canaan ang kanilang kinakain.
Si Josue at ang Pinuno ng Hukbo ni Yahweh
13 Minsa'y napadako si Josue malapit sa Jerico, nang biglang nagpakita sa kanya ang isang lalaking may hawak na tabak. Nilapitan ito ni Josue at tinanong, “Ikaw ba'y isang kakampi, o isang kaaway?”
14 “Hindi,” sagot ng lalaki. “Ako'y naparito bilang pinuno ng hukbo ni Yahweh.”
Nagpatirapa si Josue at sumamba. Sinabi niya, “Ano po ang ipinag-uutos ni Yahweh sa kanyang alipin?”
15 Sumagot ang pinuno ng hukbo ni Yahweh, “Alisin mo ang iyong mga sandalyas sapagkat lupang banal ang iyong tinutuntungan.” At ginawa nga ni Josue ang iniutos sa kanya.
