The Northern Conquest

11 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor heard these things, that he (A)sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king (B)of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph, and to the kings who were from the north, in the mountains, in the plain south of (C)Chinneroth, in the lowland, and in the heights (D)of Dor on the west, to the Canaanites in the east and in the west, the (E)Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite in the mountains, (F)and the Hivite below (G)Hermon (H)in the land of Mizpah. So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people (I)as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots. And when all these kings had [a]met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

But the Lord said to Joshua, (J)“Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall (K)hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and they attacked them. And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who defeated them and chased them to [b]Greater (L)Sidon, to the [c]Brook (M)Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward; they attacked them until they left none of them remaining. So Joshua did to them as the Lord had told him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 Joshua turned back at that time and took Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor was formerly the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they struck all the people who were in it with the edge of the sword, (N)utterly destroying them. There was none left (O)breathing. Then he burned Hazor with fire.

12 So all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them, (P)as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood on their [d]mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only, which Joshua burned. 14 And all the (Q)spoil of these cities and the livestock, the children of Israel took as booty for themselves; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left none breathing. 15 (R)As the Lord had commanded Moses His servant, so (S)Moses commanded Joshua, and (T)so Joshua did. [e]He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

Summary of Joshua’s Conquests

16 Thus Joshua took all this land: (U)the mountain country, all the South, (V)all the land of Goshen, the lowland, and the Jordan [f]plain—the mountains of Israel and its lowlands, 17 (W)from [g]Mount Halak and the ascent to Seir, even as far as Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He captured (X)all their kings, and struck them down and killed them. 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, except (Y)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in battle. 20 For (Z)it was of the Lord [h]to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, (AA)as the Lord had commanded Moses.

21 And at that time Joshua came and cut off (AB)the Anakim from the mountains: from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 None of the Anakim were left in the land of the children of Israel; they remained only (AC)in Gaza, in Gath, (AD)and in Ashdod.

23 So Joshua took the whole land, (AE)according to all that the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel (AF)according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land (AG)rested from war.

The Kings Conquered by Moses(AH)

12 These are the kings of the land whom the children of Israel defeated, and whose land they possessed on the other side of the Jordan toward the rising of the sun, (AI)from the River Arnon (AJ)to Mount Hermon, and all the eastern Jordan plain: One king was (AK)Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon and ruled half of Gilead, from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, from the middle of that river, even as far as the River Jabbok, which is the border of the Ammonites, and (AL)the eastern Jordan plain from the [i]Sea of Chinneroth as far as the [j]Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea), (AM)the road to Beth Jeshimoth, and [k]southward below (AN)the[l] slopes of Pisgah. The other king was (AO)Og king of Bashan and his territory, who was of (AP)the remnant of the giants, (AQ)who dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei, and reigned over (AR)Mount Hermon, (AS)over Salcah, over all Bashan, (AT)as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and over half of Gilead to the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

(AU)These Moses the servant of the Lord and the children of Israel had conquered; and (AV)Moses the servant of the Lord had given it as a possession to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

The Kings Conquered by Joshua

And these are the kings of the country (AW)which Joshua and the children of Israel conquered on this side of the Jordan, on the west, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon as far as [m]Mount Halak and the ascent to (AX)Seir, which Joshua (AY)gave to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions, (AZ)in the mountain country, in the lowlands, in the Jordan plain, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the South—(BA)the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: (BB)the king of Jericho, one; (BC)the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; 10 (BD)the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one; 11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; 12 the king of Eglon, one; (BE)the king of Gezer, one; 13 (BF)the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 (BG)the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 (BH)the king of Makkedah, one; (BI)the king of Bethel, one; 17 the king of Tappuah, one; (BJ)the king of Hepher, one; 18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of [n]Lasharon, one; 19 the king of Madon, one; (BK)the king of Hazor, one; 20 the king of (BL)Shimron Meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one; 21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one; 22 (BM)the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; 23 the king of Dor in the (BN)heights of Dor, one; the king of (BO)the people of Gilgal, one; 24 the king of Tirzah, one—(BP)all the kings, thirty-one.

Remaining Land to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua (BQ)was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed. (BR)This is the land that yet remains: (BS)all the territory of the Philistines and all (BT)that of the Geshurites, (BU)from Sihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward (which is counted as Canaanite); the (BV)five lords of the Philistines—the Gazites, the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also (BW)the Avites; from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians (BX)as far as Aphek, to the border of (BY)the Amorites; the land of (BZ)the [o]Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, (CA)from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath; all the inhabitants of the mountains from Lebanon as far as (CB)the [p]Brook Misrephoth, and all the Sidonians—them (CC)I will drive out from before the children of Israel; only (CD)divide[q] it by lot to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Land Divided East of the Jordan

With the other half-tribe the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (CE)which Moses had given them, (CF)beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them: from Aroer which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the town that is in the midst of the ravine, (CG)and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (CH)all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon; 11 (CI)Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, who remained of (CJ)the remnant of the giants; (CK)for Moses had [r]defeated and [s]cast out these.

13 Nevertheless the children of Israel (CL)did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites, but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

14 (CM)Only to the tribe of Levi he had given [t]no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, (CN)as He said to them.

The Land of Reuben

15 (CO)And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families. 16 Their territory was (CP)from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, (CQ)and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, (CR)and all the plain by Medeba; 17 (CS)Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 (CT)Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 (CU)Kirjathaim, (CV)Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley, 20 Beth Peor, (CW)the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 (CX)all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (CY)whom Moses had struck (CZ)with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country. 22 The children of Israel also killed with the sword (DA)Balaam the son of Beor, the [u]soothsayer, among those who were killed by them. 23 And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

The Land of Gad

24 (DB)Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families. 25 (DC)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, (DD)and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before (DE)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, 27 and in the valley (DF)Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, (DG)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge (DH)of the [v]Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward. 28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Half the Tribe of Manasseh (East)

29 (DI)Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families: 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and (DJ)all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31 half of Gilead, and (DK)Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the (DL)children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.

32 These are the areas which Moses had [w]distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward. 33 (DM)But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, (DN)as He had said to them.

Joshua’s Conquest of the North

11 And it happened, when Jabin king of Hazor heard this, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Acshaph, and to the kings who were in the north in the hill country, in the Arabah[a] south of Kinnereth,[b] in the Shephelah,[c] and in Naphoth Dor[d] in the west, to the Canaanites[e] in the east and west, the Amorites,[f] the Hittites,[g] the Perizzites,[h] and the Jebusites[i] in the hill country, and the Hivites[j] at the foot of[k] Hermon in the land of Mizpah. They came out, they and all their armies with them, as a great army like the sand on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings joined forces, and they came and camped together by the waters of Merom to fight with Israel.

And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid because of their presence, for tomorrow at this time I will hand them over slain to Israel; you will hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.” So Joshua, and all the fighting men[l] with him, came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and they attacked them.[m] And Yahweh gave them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them and pursued them up to Great Sidon and Misrephoth Maim, and eastward up to the valley of Mizpeh. And they struck them until they left behind no survivor. And Joshua did to them as Yahweh commanded him; he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 Then Joshua turned back at that time, and he captured Hazor and struck its king with the sword, because Hazor formerly was the head of all these kingdoms. 11 He struck all the people that were in it with the edge of the sword,[n] utterly destroying them. There was no one left who breathed,[o] and he burned Hazor with fire. 12 And Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, and he utterly destroyed them with the edge of the sword,[p] as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded. 13 Israel did not burn the cities standing on their mounds,[q] except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned. 14 And all the spoil and livestock of these cities the Israelites took as booty; they struck the people with the edge of the sword,[r] until they had destroyed them—they left behind no one who breathed. 15 Just as Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did; he left nothing undone that Yahweh had commanded Moses.

A Review of Joshua’s Conquests

16 So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev,[s] all the land of Goshen,[t] the Shephelah,[u] the Arabah,[v] and the hill country of Israel and its Shephelah,[w] 17 from Mount Halak that rises to Seir and to Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon[x] at the foot of[y] Mount Hermon; he captured all their kings, struck them, and killed them. 18 For many days Joshua made war with all these kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the Israelites[z] besides the Hivites[aa] and the inhabitants of Gibeon—all were taken in battle.[ab] 20 For it was Yahweh that hardened their hearts,[ac] to meet Israel in war in order to utterly destroy them without mercy, that they would destroy them just as Yahweh commanded Moses.

21 At that time Joshua came and exterminated the Anakites from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities. 22 None of the Anakites were left in the land of the Israelites;[ad] some remained only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. 23 Joshua took all the land according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel, according to their tribal divisions, and the land rested from war.

The Kings Conquered by Joshua

12 These are the kings of the land whom the Israelites[ae] defeated, and of whose land they took possession beyond the Jordon to the east,[af] from the wadi[ag] of Arnon up to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah[ah] to the east: Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi[ai] of Arnon, from the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, up to the Jabbok River,[aj] which marks the border of the Ammonites;[ak] and the Arabah[al] up to the Kinnereth Sea[am] to the east, and as far as the sea of Arabah, the Salt Sea[an] to the east, in the direction of[ao] Beth Jeshimoth, and to the area southward, at the foot of[ap] the slopes of Pisgah;[aq] the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of the last of the Rephaites, who lived at Ashtaroth and Edrei and ruled over Mount Hermon and Salecah and over all Bashan up to the border of the Geshurites[ar] and the Maacathites,[as] and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. Moses Yahweh’s servant and the Israelites[at] defeated them; and Moses Yahweh’s servant gave it as a possession to the Reubenites,[au] the Gadites,[av] and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

The Kings Conquered by Moses

These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the Israelites[aw] defeated beyond to the Jordan to the west, from Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon,[ax] and up to Mount Halak, which rises to Seir. And Joshua gave it as a possession to the tribes of Israel according to their allotments, in the hill country, the Shephelah,[ay] the Arabah,[az] on the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the Negev;[ba] the Hittites,[bb] the Amorites,[bc] the Canaanites,[bd] the Perizzites,[be] the Hivites,[bf] and the Jebusites:[bg]

23 the king of Dor in Naphath Dor, one; the king of Goiim for Gilgal, one;

24 the king of Tirzah, one; all the kings, thirty-one.

Land Still Remains to be Conquered

13 Now Joshua was old and advanced in years,[bh] and Yahweh said to him, “You are old and advanced in years,[bi] and very much of the land remains to be possessed. This is the remaining land: all the regions of the Philistines, and all of the Geshurites,[bj] from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt,[bk] up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites,[bl] Ashdodites,[bm] Ashkelonites,[bn] Gittites,[bo] Ekronites,[bp] and the Avvim. In the south; all the land of the Canaanites,[bq] and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians up to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites,[br] and the land of the Gebalites, and all the Lebanon,[bs] toward the east,[bt] from Baal Gad at the foot of[bu] Mount Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath; all the inhabitants of the hill country, from the Lebanon[bv] up to Misrephoth Maim, and all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the Israelites;[bw] only allocate it to Israel as an inheritance just as I have commanded you. Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

With it[bx] the Reubenites,[by] and the Gadites[bz] received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses Yahweh’s servant gave to them: from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi[ca] of Arnon, and the city which is in the middle of the wadi, and all the plateau from Medeba up to Dibon; 10 and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites,[cb] who reigned in Heshbon up to the border of the Ammonites;[cc] 11 and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurite[cd] and the Maacathites,[ce] all of Mount Hermon,[cf] and Bashan up to Salecah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei—he was left over from the survivors[cg] of the Rephaim; these Moses had defeated and driven out. 13 But the Israelites[ch] did not drive out the Geshurites[ci] or the Maacathites;[cj] Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this day. 14 Only the tribe of Levites[ck] Moses did not give an inheritance; the offerings made by fire to Yahweh the God of Israel are their[cl] inheritance, just as he promised to them.[cm]

Reuben’s Inheritance

15 Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the descendants[cn] of Reuben according to their families. 16 Their territory was from Aroer, which was on the edge of the wadi[co] of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plateau by Medeba; 17 Heshbon and its cities that are on the plateau; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth Shahar on the hill of the valley; 20 Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth; 21 all of the cities of the plateau, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites,[cp] who reigned in Heshbon and whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon who dwelled in the land. 22 In addition to their slain, the Israelites[cq] killed with the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination. 23 And the border of the descendants[cr] of Reuben was the Jordan and its banks.[cs] This was the inheritance of the descendants[ct] of Reuben according to their families, the cities, and their villages.

Gad’s Inheritance

24 Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the descendants[cu] of Gad, according to their families. 25 Their territory was Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites[cv] up to Aroer, which is east of Rabbah;[cw] 26 and from Heshbon up to Ramah-Mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim up to the territory to Debir; 27 in the valley of Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, Zaphon, and the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and its banks,[cx] up to the lower end of the Kinnereth Sea[cy] beyond the Jordan to the east. 28 This is the inheritance of the Gadites[cz] according to their families, the cities, and their villages.

The Half-Tribe of Manasseh’s Inheritance

29 Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was for the half-tribe of the descendants[da] of Manasseh according to their families. 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements[db] of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, Edrei, and the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the children of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Makir according to their families. 32 These are the territories that Moses gave as an inheritance on the desert-plateau of Moab, beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi Moses did not give an inheritance; Yahweh the God of Israel, he is their inheritance, just as he promised them.[dc]
