Jonah Flees the Presence of the Lord
1 Now the word of the Lord came to (A)Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to (B)Nineveh, that (C)great city, and call out against it, (D)for their evil[a] has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah (E)rose to flee to (F)Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to (G)Joppa and found a ship going to (H)Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to (I)Tarshish, (J)away from the presence of the Lord.
4 But (K)the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened (L)to break up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and (M)each cried out to his god. And (N)they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, (O)call out to your god! (P)Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.”
Jonah Is Thrown into the Sea
7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us (Q)cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” 9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear (R)the Lord, the God of heaven, (S)who made the sea and the dry land.” 10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that (T)he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, (U)for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard[b] to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life, and (V)lay not on us innocent blood, (W)for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, (X)and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, (Y)and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord (Z)and made vows.
A Great Fish Swallows Jonah
17 [c] And the Lord appointed[d] a great fish to swallow up Jonah. (AA)And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonás desobedece al Señor
1 La palabra del Señor vino a Jonás hijo de Amitay: 2 «Anda, ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive y proclama contra ella que su maldad ha llegado hasta mi presencia».
3 Jonás se fue, pero en dirección a Tarsis, para huir del Señor. Bajó a Jope, donde encontró un barco que zarpaba rumbo a Tarsis. Pagó su pasaje y se embarcó con los que iban a esa ciudad, huyendo así del Señor. 4 Pero el Señor lanzó sobre el mar un fuerte viento, y se desencadenó una tormenta tan violenta que el barco amenazaba con hacerse pedazos.
5 Los marineros, aterrados y a fin de aliviar la situación, comenzaron a clamar cada uno a su dios y a lanzar al mar lo que había en el barco. Jonás, en cambio, había bajado al fondo de la nave para acostarse y dormía profundamente. 6 El capitán del barco se le acercó y le dijo:
―¿Cómo puedes estar durmiendo? ¡Levántate! ¡Clama a tu dios! Quizá se fije en nosotros, y no perezcamos.
7 Los marineros, por su parte, se dijeron unos a otros:
―¡Vamos, echemos suertes para averiguar quién tiene la culpa de que nos haya venido este desastre!
Así lo hicieron, y la suerte recayó en Jonás. 8 Entonces le preguntaron:
―Dinos ahora, ¿quién tiene la culpa de que nos haya venido este desastre? ¿A qué te dedicas? ¿De dónde vienes? ¿Cuál es tu país? ¿A qué pueblo perteneces?
9 ―Soy hebreo y temo al Señor, Dios del cielo, que hizo el mar y la tierra firme —les respondió.
10 Al oír esto, los marineros se aterraron aún más y, como sabían que Jonás huía del Señor, pues él mismo se lo había contado, le dijeron:
―¡Qué es lo que has hecho!
11 Pero el mar se iba enfureciendo más y más, así que le preguntaron:
―¿Qué vamos a hacer contigo para que el mar deje de azotarnos?
12 Tomadme y lanzadme al mar, y el mar dejará de azotaros —les respondió—. Yo sé bien que por mi culpa se ha desatado sobre vosotros esta terrible tormenta.
13 Sin embargo, en un intento por regresar a tierra firme, los marineros se pusieron a remar con todas sus fuerzas; pero, como el mar se enfurecía más y más contra ellos, no lo consiguieron. 14 Entonces clamaron al Señor: «Oh Señor, tú haces lo que quieres. No nos hagas perecer por quitarle la vida a este hombre, ni nos hagas responsables de la muerte de un inocente». 15 Así que tomaron a Jonás y lo lanzaron al agua, y la furia del mar se aplacó. 16 Al ver esto, se apoderó de ellos un profundo temor al Señor, a quien le ofrecieron un sacrificio y le hicieron votos.
17 El Señor, por su parte, dispuso un enorme pez para que se tragara a Jonás, quien pasó tres días y tres noches en su vientre.

Jonah’s Disobedience
1 Now the word of the Lord came to (A)Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to (B)Nineveh, that (C)great city, and cry out against it; for (D)their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to (E)Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to (F)Tarshish (G)from the presence of the Lord.
The Storm at Sea
4 But (H)the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.
5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten [b]the load. But Jonah had gone down (I)into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.
6 So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, (J)call on your God; (K)perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us (L)cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, (M)“Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”
9 So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear [c]the Lord, the God of heaven, (N)who made the sea and the dry land.”
Jonah Thrown into the Sea
10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?”—for the sea was growing more tempestuous.
12 And he said to them, (O)“Pick me up and [d]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”
13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, (P)but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and (Q)do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, (R)have done as it pleased You.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, (S)and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men (T)feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.
Jonah’s Prayer and Deliverance
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And (U)Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
