Jonah 1:3-5

English Standard Version

³But Jonah ^(A)rose to flee to ^(B)Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to ^(C)Joppa and found a ship going to ^(D)Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to ^(E)Tarshish, ^(F)away from the presence of the Lord.

⁴But ^(G)the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened ^(H)to break up. ⁵Then the mariners were afraid, and ^(I)each cried out to his god. And ^(J)they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.

New International Version

³But Jonah ran^(A) away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish^(B). He went down to Joppa,^(C) where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.^(D)

⁴Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.^(E) ⁵All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.^(F)

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

³But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

⁴But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

⁵Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
