John 4:16-26

¹⁶Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

¹⁷The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ ¹⁸for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

¹⁹The woman said to Him, “Sir, ^(A)I perceive that You are a prophet. ²⁰Our fathers worshiped on ^(B)this mountain, and you Jews say that in ^(C)Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

²¹Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming ^(D)when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. ²²You worship ^(E)what you do not know; we know what we worship, for ^(F)salvation is of the Jews. ²³But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will ^(G)worship the Father in ^(H)spirit ^(I)and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. ²⁴^(J)God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

²⁵The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah ^(K)is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, ^(L)He will tell us all things.”

²⁶Jesus said to her, ^(M)“I who speak to you am He.”

¹⁶He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

¹⁷“I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. ¹⁸The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

¹⁹“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.^(A) ²⁰Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,^(B) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”^(C)

²¹“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming^(D) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.^(E) ²²You Samaritans worship what you do not know;^(F) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.^(G) ²³Yet a time is coming and has now come^(H) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit^(I) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. ²⁴God is spirit,^(J) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
